The Ford Expedition, as its name suggests, is meant for those who explore the paths less traveled and are always ready for an adventure. The Ford Expedition has always set a benchmark in the segment in terms of interior space, features, cargo space, and performance. One major reason for the popularity of the Expedition SUV is that it is based on the incredibly popular Ford F-150 pickup truck. This one thing, in particular, solidifies the Expedition as a very reliable and capable SUV in its segment. The Expedition is a very capable SUV as it can easily take any terrain you throw at it while still being very comfortable to the passengers on the inside.

Expert Review, Pricing Analysis and Buying Guide

The rivals for the Ford Expedition have always been there who are also equally good, giving tough competition in the segment. Some of these popular and tough rivals in the segment include the likes of the GMC Yukon, the Chevrolet Tahoe, and the Nissan Armada. Under the skin mechanically, the 2022 Ford Expedition is very similar to that of the 2021 model year but Ford has made some major changes to make the Expedition in line with the current generation Ford vehicles. The exterior styling is said to get a makeover with more focus on an aggressive off-road-based design. The interiors are also said to get a massive update by getting the vertical touchscreen infotainment system from the Mustang Mach-E electric SUV. Also, we have been getting some reports that suggest that the 2022 Ford Expedition might also get a fuel-efficient hybrid to help with the fuel economy of the Expedition.

2022 Ford Expedition Features

Sharing underpinnings with the mighty Ford F-150, it shouldn’t come as a surprise when the trim levels and overall method of marketing and pricing the Ford Expedition are akin to the same. Quite like the revered pickup, the full-size SUV is offered in five trim levels of very similar nomenclature. Unlike the F-150, however, the lowest XL variant starts at a more premium price of $53,600 and ends at $77,000 for the Platinum trim.

We Recommend

At the entry-level XL trim, the 2022 Ford Expedition is rather capable and feature-packed, offering great value for money as well. While this does not hold true for higher trims as they are also equipped with great features that you might regret missing out on. Thus, for the best of both worlds, we recommend the King Ranch trim, although a specced out Platinum can’t hurt if you’re paying $77,000 for a Ford SUV.

We expect the prices to start at around $53,600 for the base trim level and go all the way up to $77,000 for the range-topping Platinum trim level.

Release Date

There is no official information about the 2022 Expedition from Ford regarding the release dates. But based on the release dates of the previous model years, we are expecting the 2022 Ford Expedition to hit the roads somewhere in fall 2021.

2022 Ford Expedition Engine and Performance

The 2022 Ford Expedition is expected to get the same powertrain that also powered the 2021 model, which means that it is a 3.5-liter twin-turbocharged V6 engine. This unit produces 375 hp and has 470 lb-ft of torque, which is very well enough to pull this massive SUV. Power is sent to either the rear wheels or all four wheels, whereas the transmission duties are handled with the help of a 10-speed automatic gearbox.

You can not expect an SUV of such massive proportions to be nimble in terms of handling, and you would not be mistaken if you did so. The 2022 Expedition is a very long SUV that suffers a lot in terms of handling and driving dynamics. The body roll is well pronounced in this SUV, which is the norm with body-on-frame based SUVs. The 2022 Ford Expedition rides best when driven in a calm and relaxed manner, which is during city drives or highway cruising. The steering wheel too lacks the feel and feedback, but this is not a major problem given all of its rivals in the segment face the same issue.

The aspect where the Ford Expedition shines brightest is ride quality. The 2022 Expedition takes most of the bumps on uneven roads with great ease and keeps the passengers comfortable at all times. All of the SUVs in this segment are really massive and have lots of power to offer. Looking at just the numbers, it is the 2022 Nissan Armada with the most power in the segment at 390 hp, followed by the 2022 Ford Expedition at 375 hp. And thus, it is also the Nissan Armada which is the fastest to reach the 0-60 mph and quarter-mile timing at 5.9 seconds and 15.0 seconds, respectively. The 2022 Expedition comes in at seconds with a 0-60 mph timing of 6.2 seconds along with a quarter-mile timing of 15.5 seconds.

2022 Ford Expedition Fuel Economy

Thanks to its twin-turbocharged engine which the 2022 Ford Expedition will most likely come equipped with, the SUV performs well in terms of fuel economy. The fuel economy figures of the 2022 Ford Expedition are also the best in the segment. The 2022 Ford Expedition is good for 17 mpg in the city, followed by 24 mpg on the highway, and has a combined mpg rating of 19 mpg. This combined with its humongous fuel tank capacity at 25.0 gallons makes it the best in the segment in terms of range with a combined range of 570 miles.

The 2022 Ford Expedition is again said to lead the segment in terms of fuel economy. And there are also speculations around a new more fuel-efficient hybrid powertrain in the works for the 2022 Ford Expedition. This hybrid engine, if it happens, will further strengthen the fuel economy of the 2022 Ford Expedition. Nissan Armada suffers in the department because of its best-in-class power figure and offers 16 mpg combined.

2022 Ford Expedition Interior

The interior of the Ford Expedition was always built with its main focus on practicality and ergonomics. Thus, it is very easy to use even when driving and is also roomier than any of its rivals. We expect the same to continue even with the 2022 model year as it is the carryover model of the 2021 Ford Expedition. And this massive interior space combined with the comfortable seats and smooth ride quality makes the 2022 Expedition an absolute delight for all the passengers. There is a huge glove box in the dashboard that can accommodate any of your items that you need to carry, followed by a huge space under the front center armrest. Also, the third-row passengers get dedicated cup holders and cargo nets for additional storage.

Ford has always packed its vehicles with the most amount of features. The 2022 Ford Expedition comes packed in with features like heated 2nd-row seats, auto-dimming rearview mirror, automatic start & stop technology, wireless charging, adaptive cruise control, dual-zone automatic climate control system, 360-degree camera with split-view, and ambient lighting. The 2022 Ford Expedition is also expected to have the same 20.9 cubic feet of storage capacity, which is the second-best cargo-carrying capacity figure in the segment. The GMC Yukon and the Nissan Armada offer the most space at 25.5 cubic feet of cargo.

The Expedition has the best infotainment system in the segment. And there is a massive change that is expected to come with the 2022 model year. We are expecting a large vertical touchscreen from the Mustang Mach-E to make its debut on the 2022 Ford Expedition SUV. The previous model year had lots of features in terms of the infotainment system. These include the likes of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, smartphone integration, a navigation system, real-time traffic data, real-time weather data, rearview camera with adaptive guidelines, HD radio, and a voice recognition system. We expect all this to get incorporated onto the big vertical touchscreen from the current 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system. Highlights of the 2022 Ford Expedition interior include:

  • 15.5” touchscreen shared with the Mustang Mach E
  • Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity
  • Rear-view Camera and 360-degree view with guidelines
  • Voice-operable infotainment system
  • Ambient lighting
  • Dual-zone automatic climate control system
  • Wireless Charging

2022 Ford Expedition Exterior

The 2022 Ford Expedition is expected to get more exterior design updates that might be more focused on off-road. Even the current model year of the Expedition looks great with an imposing stance, thanks to its massive proportions. With the upcoming changes to the exterior design, we expect the 2022 Expedition to get even more appealing in the segment of large tall and boxy SUVs. The SUV weighs 5,443 lbs and stands 9.8 inches above the ground.

All the SUVs in this segment are massive in size and have huge proportions, justifying the SUV moniker. They all have a huge presence on the road, but still, each one of these SUVs is pretty different in the way they look. The Expedition though is expected to lead in terms of dimensions as it will be a carryover model of the 2021 Ford Expedition. Some exterior features of the 2022 Ford Expedition are :

  • Running Boards
  • Auto high beam headlamp
  • Panoramic Sunroof
  • Chrome Tip Exhaust
  • 22-inch Aluminum Alloy Wheels
  • Trailer backup assist
  • LED headlights and taillights
  • Hands-free Foot Activated Liftgate
  • Rain Sensing Wipers and Rear Defogger

2022 Ford Expedition Safety

The 2022 Ford Expedition is expected to score high on safety, given it is a Ford and has one of the best build quality. The 2021 Ford Expedition scored really well in the crash tests conducted by the NHTSA and secured the best score of 5 out of 5 in the tests. This is expected to be the same for the 2022 model as it is mostly the same as the current generation model. The IIHS has not evaluated the 2021 model year, so we do not know if they will evaluate the 2022 Ford Expedition either. Ford has made some optional safety features as standard, and that gave it an edge over the rivals in terms of safety. Some noteworthy safety features that come with the 2022 Ford Expedition includes:

  • Tire Pressure Monitoring System
  • Safety Canopy System
  • Front and Rear ventilated disc brakes
  • Side impact bars
  • Lane Departure Warning
  • Cross-Traffic Alert
  • Tire pressure monitoring system
  • Four Wheels Anti-lock Braking System (ABS)
  • Driveline Traction Control System
  • Electronic Stability Control
  • Roll Stability Control
  • Hill Start Assist and Hill Descent Control
  • Engine immobilizer

2022 Ford Expedition Competition

Ford Expedition vs GMC Yukon

One of the toughest competitors to the Ford Expedition is the GMC Yukon, which is the luxury offering in the segment by GMC. And it is truly one of the most luxurious SUVs in this segment. Like the Expedition, the Yukon has loads of space on the interiors combined with lots of features and technology. But still, we feel that the Ford Expedition is the better option as a whole package thanks to its powerful yet fuel-efficient powertrain.

Ford Expedition vs Chevrolet Tahoe

The Chevrolet Tahoe is basically the sister of the GMC Yukon and thus shares a lot with the Yukon. The Chevrolet Tahoe is equally spacious just like the Yukon and has lots of features. But unlike the GMC Yukon, the Tahoe is not marketed as a luxury offering in the segment. The Tahoe might be the perfect competitor to the Ford Expedition in terms of pricing. But like what we said for the Yukon, the Ford Expedition easily beats the Tahoe in terms of power and fuel economy.

Ford Expedition vs Nissan Armada

The only Japanese rival that is a worthy competitor to the Ford Expedition is the Nissan Armada. It is one of the best SUVs in the segment with an upscale cabin along with a praiseworthy towing capacity. The Nissan Armada does lack uniqueness in its design language but has the most powerful engine in its segment. Other than that, the Armada simply lacks the spacious interiors, comfortable seats, fuel economy, and features of the 2022 Ford Expedition.

2022 Ford Expedition Final Verdict

The full-size SUV segment is very competitive, and it is really very difficult to choose one as all the SUVs are well packaged in terms of comfort, safety, performance, and features. The Ford Expedition has been a great SUV in the segment for quite a long time with many positives going in its favor. And with the 2022 model year, Ford is only expected to raise the bar with new exterior and interior styling with some additional features. All these make the already good Ford Expedition a great choice in the segment.
