The Ford Expedition is expected to get a mid-cycle refresh for the 2022 model year. Spy photographs have shown a heavily camouflaged front and rear fascia, allowing us to believe that it will get a mild redesign. It is also revealed that it will also get the 15.5-inch portrait-oriented touchscreen also seen in the Mustang Mach-e as optional. Moreover, there have also been sightings of what could be the possible Expedition Timberline trim on its test runs, which further get some off-road hardware and some exterior design additions too.

The rest of the Ford Expedition is expected to be carried forward from the 2021 model year including the 3.5L twin-turbocharged V6 making 375 hp and 440hp on the Platinum trim. The 2022 Expedition now also comes with a unique Stealth Edition Performance package, which delivers maximum on-road performance. That said, with the possible updates present for the 2022 Expedition, prices are expected to start at an MSRP of $52,500 for the base XL trim. The 2022 Expedition will compete with the likes of the GMC Yukon, Chevrolet Tahoe, and Nissan Armada.

As an SUV, the Expedition is a fantastic all-rounder, offering comfort, practicality, rugged looks, and a potent powertrain - CarBuzz

The Ford Expedition will come with many changes for the 2022 model year. The changes include a new interior design and from its spy shots, it is expected to feature a 15.5-inch infotainment system from the Ford Mustang Mach-e and also new front and rear fascias thanks to the heavily redesigned Expedition test vehicles. Other updates do include the Timberline trim but, we are confident it will carry forward all five existing trims.

The 2022 Expedition is expected to carry forward the 3.5L twin-turbocharged V6 making 375 hp and also could see a hybrid engine as well. The interior features power-adjustable seats, tri-zone climate control, and interior upholstery varying from cloth to leather with contrast stitching. Safety features include lane departure warning, cross-traffic alert, tire pressure monitoring system, and many more.

What is the Price of the 2022 Ford Expedition?

There has been no official report regarding the pricing structure of the 2022 Expedition, but nevertheless, we expect the full-size SUV to start from an MSRP of $52,500.

What is the Release Date of the 2022 Ford Expedition?

Upon unveil of the 2022 Expedition in September 2021, we can expect the full-size SUV to reach dealerships across the US as soon as Late-2021.

2022 Ford Expedition Buying Advice

Priced at an expected $55,400, the XLT trim is the one to get, and do also opt for the 4WD drivetrain. We would recommend getting the optional comfort features and convenience features like heated and ventilated seats, captain's chairs for the second-row seats instead of the split-bench seat, and lastly, the heavy-duty tow package which will increase the towing capacity to 9,200 pounds with the 4WD system.

2022 Ford Expedition Features

The Ford Expedition is reported to have a major update for the 2022 model year, especially with the interior. There have been reports for the exterior to get a few changes and also rumors for the 2021 Expedition to get new F-150's hybrid powertrain as an option as well. However, on the trim front, we do not expect there to be any changes in the trims. We do expect the addition of the Timberline trim to join the XL, XLT, Limited, King Range, and Platinum trims and is expected to slot in between the XLT and Limited trim, just like on the Ford Explorer. The Timberline trim is a more off-road focused trim and will come with its own unique exterior and interior styling which will be off-road focused.

With the updates we expect pricing to start at around $52,500 for the base XL trim which is an increase of about $3,000 on each trim and will rise up to $77,000 for the Platinum trim. The Timberline trim is expected to cost $2,000 more than the Limited trim at approximately $60,000.

2022 Ford Expedition Engine and Performance

7.7/10

Things like moving off from a stoplight or merging onto a freeway are all tackled with confidence - Kelley Blue Book

The 2022 Ford Expedition is expected to carry forward the same 3.5L twin-turbocharged V6 engine from the 2021 model year. The engine makes 375 hp and 470 lb-ft of torque, in its standard form, but in higher trims of the Expedition, the V6 is able to put out 400 hp and 510 lb-ft of torque. The engine is paired to a 10-speed automatic transmission which sends all the power to the RWD system or the 4WD system if you select it for $2,050.

There have also been rumors it may get the 3.5L Powerboost V6 hybrid that makes 430 hp from the F-150 as an engine option. The Ford Expedition can do the 0-60 mph sprint in 6.2-seconds and Platinum trim reduces the time to 5.7-seconds, it will do the quarter-mile in 14.8-seconds and will top out at 125 mph. The 2022 Expedition comes with a towing capacity of 9,300 pounds.

2022 Ford Expedition Fuel Economy

7.0/10

As Ford reports no changes in the powertrain section of the 2022 Ford Expedition, the full-size SUV is also expected to offer the same fuel economy figures as the 2021 model year. When equipped with the 3.5L V6 engine, the 2022 Expeditiondelivers 17 MPG in the city, 23 MPG on the highway, and a combined 19 MPG. The 4WD version drops the fuel economy figures by 2 MPG on the highway. There are no changes in fuel economy for the Platinum trim which makes 400 hp.

2022 Ford Expedition Interior

9.0/10

The Expedition makes full use of its interior space - Edmunds

The interior of the 2022 Ford Expedition is expected to be carried forward with the possibility of getting the 15.5-inch portrait-oriented touchscreen as an optional extra from the Ford Mustang Mach-e. With this update, we will see an update in the interior design of the Ford Expedition but we also expect to see the same features on each trim carry forward. The Ford Expedition will come with a seating capacity of up to 8, depending on the trim.

Features like heated power-adjustable seats, tri-zone climate control, leather upholstery with unique stitching are available as you go higher up in the trims. The base is also well equipped with power-adjustable front row seats, cloth upholstery, tri-zone climate control are standard. With all three rows, the 2022 Expedition will have a cargo capacity of 20.9 cu. ft. The interior of the Ford Expedition comes with the most amount of space for the occupants across all three rows, specifically the second and third-row where it offers more space.

In terms of infotainment, we are expecting a large 15.5-inch touchscreen with the new Sync-4 interface from the Mustang Mach-E to make its debut on the 2022 Ford Expedition SUV. The Sync 4 interface has the ability of OTA updates not only for the system but also for navigation. Other features will include wireless smartphone connectivity like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, AM/FM/HD radio, and a voice recognition system. We also expect SiriusXM satellite radio's trial subscription to be included. A rear-seat entertainment system which is available on Limited trim and higher is also expected to be carried forward.

2022 Ford Expedition Exterior

8.0/10

The Expedition is quite slab-sided, with only one styling line running down the side connecting the front are rear lights. - CarBuzz

The 2022 Ford Expedition is expected to come with quite a few exterior changes as earlier spy shots have revealed the testing car had a heavily camouflaged front and rear fascia. Then there is also the case of the new Timberline Edition which sports off-road wheels, heavy F-150 Raptor underbody skid plates, and also a higher ground clearance, for proper off-roading capability.

With the Timberland trim, we do expect its own unique exterior to feature a more rugged design and its own unique exterior paint. With the standard variant, the exterior gets a new look, as we also expect a new set of wheels designs with the current sizes of 18-inches up to 22-inches. We expect the standard set of colors to continue including the popular Antimatter Blue, Rapid Red Mettalic tri-coat, and Iconic Silver.

In terms of dimensions, there are no changes to the expected for the 2022 Ford Expedition, but it could increase ride height from the existing 9.8-inches for the Timberland trim. Compared to the competition, the dimensions are similar except for the Yukon and the Tahoe which are 81-inches in width and ride 2-inches lower than the Expedition.

Some exterior features of the 2022 Ford Expedition are :

  • Running Boards
  • Auto high beam headlamps
  • Panoramic Sunroof
  • Chrome Tip Exhaust
  • 22-inch Aluminum Alloy Wheels
  • Trailer backup assist
  • LED headlights and taillights
  • Hands-free Foot Activated Liftgate
  • Rain Sensing Wipers and Rear Defogger

2022 Ford Expedition Safety

8.0/10

The 2022 Ford Expedition has not yet been put through a wall, by neither the NHTSA nor the IIHS. However, as there are no changes in the platform from the 2021 model which has an overall 5-star safety rating from the NHTSA, hence we expect the same scores. Ford equips its largest SUV with many safety features and driver-assist features. For 2022 though, the latest Expedition has the best-in-class driver-assist tech, which now also includes the new Ford BlueCruise hands-free driving system.

Some noteworthy safety features that come with the 2022 Ford Expedition includes:

  • Tire Pressure Monitoring System
  • Safety Canopy System (multiple airbags for all three rows including side airbags)
  • Lane Departure Warning
  • Rear Cross-Traffic Alert
  • Four Wheels Anti-lock Braking System (ABS)
  • Driveline Traction Control System
  • Electronic Stability Control
  • Roll Stability Control
  • Hill Start Assist and Hill Descent Control

2022 Ford Expedition Competition

7.0/10

2022 Ford Expedition vs 2022 GMC Yukon

The GMC Yukon lineup comes with lesser power and offers a lower performance quotient than the Ford Expedition. It also has lesser fuel economy and range than the Expedition. It comes with lesser interior space than the Expedition but offers more cargo space than it. That said it is priced slightly lesser than the expected price of the 2022 Expedition, making it a good option.

2022 Ford Expedition vs 2021 Nissan Armada

The Nissan Armada does make more power and has better performance than the Ford Expedition. However, the Armada losses out in terms of interior space, cargo space, fuel economy, and driving range compared to the Expedition. Moreover, the Nissan Armada is more affordable than the Ford Expedition, making it a good option, only if you seek better performance.

2022 Ford Expedition Final Verdict

The 2022 Ford Expedition does come with impressive power figures and it certainly does put forth a good performance quotient, it even offers the best fuel economy among the competition. With the 2022 model year, Ford is expected to raise the bar with new exterior and interior styling with some additional features and possibly a hybrid powertrain. All these make the already good Ford Expedition a great choice in the segment.

Definitely a huge leap ahead for Ford

Pros - Looks majestic. Luxurious cabin. Reliable handling.

Cons - Hassle in parking. Pretty expensive. High loading floor.

Parking this car needs special training The whole of my family have been a loyal Ford fans and since I was looking for a large vehicle, the only brand I considered was Ford. Since I wanted to go all out on the space, I chose the Expedition and what a car Ford has managed to make. Its got levels of luxury that I’ve never experience in a Ford and the whole design just looks very premium and rich and it indeed is not a cheap car as I ended up paying $52,520. The Expedition has great handling behavior especially for a car thi...

Love the comfort and space it renders!

Pros - Comfortable driving position, Smooth steering wheel, Spacious interiors, Quick acceleration

Cons - I've got nothing to mention here as of now

A Power-packed performer from Ford Previously I owned a GMC Yukon and faced more feuds with the service engineers after surpassing 110K miles. I've decided to trade it with a more reliable SUV with enough space to haul my entire family. My mechanic suggested buying a Ford Expedition since he believed that the Ford' would be more reliable. While test driving it, I felt more comfortable in the driving cabin and the steering wheel twisted sharply on corners. It has more space on the rear side and is capable of hauling some e...

Lots of room than expected!

Pros - Flexible and roomy cabins, Mighty V6 engine, Solid build quality, Better road grip

Cons - Excess road noise at high speeds, Average gas mileage, Maneuvering in tight spots

Solid and Versatile This truck can haul everyone in my family without any discomforts during vacation and has a mighty V6 engine for spirited performance. The walk-through rear cabins have enormous space to accommodate up to 8 adults along with some luggage with ease. Ford's solid build quality makes us feel secure while traveling at high speeds and its 18-inch wheels are wide enough to provide better road grip. I recommend buying this truck if you're looking for a fully-loaded family SUV. Professional and timely se...
