An SUV for seating up to eight passengers plus their cargo and a stout towing capacity, the new Ford Expedition is a good workhorse. It can be bought in both standard-length and long-wheelbase Expedition Max styles. It is powered by a twin-turbocharged V-6 engine mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission. Rear-wheel drive is standard, with the option of a four-wheel drivetrain on any trim level. Offered by the Expedition is not an exciting driving experience, but at least smooth.

The longer-wheelbase Expedition Max stretches out by nearly afoot to provide more cargo space compared to the Expedition and is now available in every trim level. The Price of the Expedition starts at $54,810 and goes up all the way to $75,775 which is rather a steep price but there might have been justice done to it. This price point makes the Expedition does not have many competitors but the cars that can rival these might be the Chevrolet Suburban and the GMC Yukon.

2021 Ford Expedition MAX SUV Features

The Ford Expedition Max (Long wheelbase version of the Ford Expedition) is available from the XLT trim and those are what we shall see today. The starting trim would be the XLT at a price point of $54,810 and the price would go upto $75,775 for the fully loaded Platinum trim and which is the last on the line. The Expedition Max has four trims in total. All trims make a good 375 hp from the 3.5L twin-turbo V6 while the Platinum alone has the advantage of a 400hp from the same engine. The Option of AWD is offered for a price across all the trims.

Which Trim should you buy?

The XLT is a very capable vehicle in itself and if your purpose is just basic Hauling, towing, and movement there might not be a need to go beyond that but there is no stop to how much we can wish for and my personal favorite and pick would be the fully loaded Platinum trim with a bit more inclination to more horsepower and not hesitating to pay more.

2021 Ford Expedition MAX SUV Engine and Performance

8.6/10

The 2021 Ford Expedition MAX is powered by a 3.5-liter twin-turbo EcoBoost V6 engine that is capable of generating almost 375 horsepower. The top-of-the-line Platinum trim is capable of churning out 400 hp from the same engine. The 2021 Ford Expedition MAX comes mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission. Rear-wheel drive is standard across all the trims and the FWD system is available as an option for $3,050.

The Ford Expedition MAX does the 0-60 run in 6.2 seconds and that is really good for an SUV of that dimension. It also completes a quarter-mile in 14.8 seconds and has a top speed of 120 mph. The MAX Platinum does the 0-60 in 5.9 seconds and the quarter-mile in 14.6 seconds. Both the tests show better performance than the Chevrolet Suburban and the GMC Yukon XL. The Yukon however has the better top speed of 130 mph beating the Ford as well.

How well does the 2021 Ford Expedition handle?

The Ford Expedition Max is a very comfortable car not only because of the interior comfort features but also because of the offer of independent rear suspension which greatly improves handling while absorbing undulations. However, the response from the steering is less and the big size is not helpful as it is a difficult task to drive this vehicle inside cities.

The Ford Expedition Max’s ground clearance helps it move effortlessly over a number of terrains and uneven surfaces, the four-wheel-drive system helps us really well. The availability of the Four-wheel-drive System helps the car get more grip on the road which prevents going off the road and better braking and put the power down properly as well. Thus, helping us have control of the car in any situation.

2021 Ford Expedition Braking Performance

The Expedition comes equipped with big brakes of 13-inch in the front and 13.5-inch at the back, the Ford Expedition MAX is a heavy 5,534 pound SUV and is able to achieve a stopping distance from 60 mph to a standstill in just 120 ft, which is better than the Yukon's 129 feet. The brake rotors are vented which helps them cool down faster under constant use, and are equipped with safety features like the ABS, brake assist, trailer brake control, and automatic emergency braking.

The Suburban offers even bigger brakes than the Ford at 13.5 in the front and 13.6 sized rotors in the rear, although the top speed is just 108 mph the size of the rotors must have better-stopping power than the other two. The o-60 stopping figure is not available here but it is assumed to be really close to the Ford or maybe even better.

2021 Ford Expedition MAX SUV Fuel Economy

6.5/10

The Big 3.5L v6 on the Expedition is not an engine to be called economical as the Expedition MAX returns about 17 mpg in the city, 23 mpg on the highway, and combined mileage of 19 mpg. The four-wheel-drive version of the car makes it worse by returning 16 in the city, 21mpg on the highway, and combined mileage of 18 mpg.

From seeing the table it might seem that the Ford is the most efficient car here but the competition is powered by big V8s that return just 1 mpg less in the city and 3 mpg less on the highway. The advantage is the fuel capacity as the Expedition gets a 30-gallon fuel tank compared to the rival’s 28 Gallons and that combined with the small engine gives a really good range.

2021 Ford Expedition MAX SUV Interior

8.2/10

The interior of the Ford Expedition MAX has seating for eight people quite comfortably. The front row seats are power-adjustable, the captain's chairs are offered with leather upholstery. The $74,735 King Ranch trim, can be bought with Del Rio leather upholstery for all surfaces including door and console.

The seats are heated, ventilated, and include power lumbar functions and the second row features captain’s chairs instead of the split-bench seat, reducing seating capacity to 7 occupants. The car also offers a standard cargo space of 36 cubic feet although the cargo space offered by the competition is more.

The Chevy and the GMC are a complete disappointment considering that cars of that size can only carry 5 passengers completely beaten by the Ford that can accommodate 8 people. The GMC and the Chevy being far-off twins have the same everything except the name of the company that makes them. The Ford has better space in the second row, while the Chevy and the GMC offer more space in the third row too, and have a larger space for cargo. The Expedition is offered a number of additional interior features like:

  • auto-dimming rearview mirrors
  • dual-zone automatic climate control
  • carpeted floors
  • illuminated entry system
  • 15 cupholders
  • center console storage

What’s there to keep you entertained?

The Ford Expedition MAX comes equipped with an 8-inch touchscreen Ford’s Sync3 infotainment system that offers features like Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, a navigation system, Bluetooth connectivity, wireless charging, real-time traffic data, real-time weather data, a Wifi hotspot, and a six-speaker sound system, these features are offered across all the trims except the XLT.

However, in the base XLT trim, the rest get a Bang and Olufsen 12-speaker sound system standard. There is one available option on the Limited, King Ranch, and Platinum trims for the dual-headrest and rear-seat entertainment system that can be opted for $1,995. The important infotainment features of the car include:

  • 8-inch touchscreen Ford’s Sync3 infotainment system
  • 4G LTE Wifi hotspot
  • Navigation system
  • Speed sensitive volume control
  • Steering-mounted controls
  • 9-speaker Bang and Olufsen system
  • Real-time traffic data and weather data
  • Wireless charging
  • Smartphone integration

2021 Ford Expedition MAX SUV Exterior

8.8/10

The exterior of the Expedition MAX is the same as the regular Expedition, only that it is longer by 11.9 inches and the wheelbase has been increased by 9.1 inches. The exterior does have a good set of features including running boards, bodyside cladding, quad beam reflector headlamps, roof rack rails, and trailer hitch receiver. 18"wheels are offered as standard on the XLT trim and the other trims get a set of 20" wheels.

The Ford is the lightest car here for its advantage and is still the smallest in terms of the dimensions than the other two. The Chevy is heavier at 5616lbs and is the shortest car off the trio. The GMC is the heaviest at 5633 lbs and the tallest car here. We have the width of only the Ford here and looking at that it seems the Expedition is a wide car and that size is a bit difficult to maneuver into the smaller territory.

2021 Ford Expedition MAX SUV Safety

9.9/10

The Ford Expedition comes with quite a few features as standard and those would include SOS post-crash alert, tire pressure monitoring system, rear sensing system, and safety canopy system, etc. Additionally, there are also driver-assist features like a Blind spot monitoring system, rear cross-traffic alert, Lane-keeping system, and even Pre-collision assist with automatic emergency braking. Some of the other safety features are:

  • Side impact bars
  • Driveline traction control
  • Electronic stability control
  • Adaptive cruise control
  • The automatic emergency braking system
  • Pedestrian detection system

2021 Ford Expedition MAX SUV Competition

7.5/10

2021 Ford Expedition MAX vs the Chevrolet Suburban

The Ford Expedition MAX produces 375hp, which is more than the Chevrolet Suburban and even returns better mileage figures, thanks to its smaller engine. In terms of space, there is not much difference, with ford offering more legroom, and the Suburban compensates with more cargo space. These two can keep trading punches like this all day, and what one is short of, the other offers. But, eventually, the Ford trunks out to be a better value for money choice.

Chevrolet Suburban

2021 Ford Expedition MAX vs the GMC Yukon XL

The 2021 GMC Yukon XL is a little bit of a rip-off from the Chevrolet Suburban, they share a lot of parts and a lot in common. The Yukon XL is down on performance when compared to Expedition XL. The mileage figures offered by the Yukon are not better than the Ford too. This SUV however, is not that much tough a competition to the GMC, it does not even try like the Chevy. This car is too much down on the performance, mileage, and the other figures. The internal space and the dimensions of the car might be better but not nearly as good as the Ford.

GMC Yukon XL

2021 Ford Expedition MAX SUV Final Verdict

The Ford Expedition is a great car and has a lot of features, space, comfort, safety, and based on the trim a lot of power too. The high price point is the only pain here which from my point has seems a bit justified and good. However, there can be improvements to make this car better and make it a more clearly visible option and this turns out even better than what it is now.
