Expert Review, Pricing Analysis and Buying Guide

The Ford Explorer is expected to undergo several changes for the 2022 model year. Meanwhile, the ST model will be offered an ST-Line appearance package. Furthermore, rear-wheel drivetrains could also be available in the ST versions. The 2022 Ford Explorer ST is the sport-utility vehicle that sets a new standard for performance. The Explorer ST utilizes state-of-the-art technology, including a 10-speed automatic transmission with manual shifting mode, Active Torque Vectoring Control, sport-tuned suspension, and 4G LTE WiFi capability. It faces stiff competition from other SUVs like the Chevrolet Traverse RS, Kia Telluride, and Hyundai Palisade.

Features

The 2022 Ford Explorer is a midsize SUV with seating for seven or six if you choose the second-row captain's chairs. The Ford Explorer is expected to be offered in six trim levels in 2022, namely base, XLT, Limited, ST, King Ranch, and Platinum. In this review, we will examine the ST trim in more detail. For 2022 MY, we do not have pricing information, but we anticipate a $1,500 increase in MSRP.

As the name suggests, the ST is the sporty Explorer. This variant will come with a more powerful turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 engine, sport-tuned suspension, paddle shifters, and sport front seats. As one of the top-tier trims, it will come with all the standard features, such as tri-zone climate control, push-button start, an 8-inch touchscreen, rearview camera, satellite radio, six-speaker stereo, SYNC 3 infotainment system, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto support.

We recommend

As the ST is part of the Explorer lineup, there is no further sub-trim under the ST. It will likely be the sweet spot in the lineup from a value perspective if you opt for the ST trim. With its sporty attitude and plenty of standard tech and safety features, it has an edge over other trims.

2022 Ford Explorer ST release date

The 2022 Explorer ST SUV hasn't been given an exact release date by Ford yet, but we expect that it will go on sale by the end of 2021.

Engine and Performance
8.0/10

According to reports, the 2022 Ford Explorer ST will retain its predecessor's mechanicals. It will be powered by a 3L twin-turbocharged EcoBoost V6 engine paired to a 10-speed automatic transmission. With 400 horsepower and 415 lb-ft of torque, the power of this engine is transmitted through an intelligent 4WD system. There are a variety of automatic transmission modes available with the 2022 Explorer ST, as well as the option for manual shift control via paddle shifting.

Performance-wise, the Ford Explorer ST can sprint from 0-60 in 5.2 seconds and run a quarter-mile in 13.8 seconds. Even though the Explorer is large, the sharp steering makes it seem more athletic than most rivals in its class. The suspension is sports-tuned, so it keeps you jerk-free during most undulating road conditions. It is capable of towing up to 5,600 lbs with the appropriate equipment.

There is no SUV on the preceding list that can compete with the Ford Explorer ST in terms of power and performance. The Ford Explorer ST outperforms all of the above SUVs in the 0-60 mph test. The Chevy Traverse comes in second with a 0-60 mph sprint time of 6.9 seconds. The Kia Telluride sits third despite weighing more than 100 pounds more than the Hyundai Palisade, the slowest car of the bunch.

Fuel Economy
5.0/10

The 2022 Ford Explorer ST is more gas-guzzler than its siblings. This is due to its hefty V6 engine, which produces staggering power, which reduces its fuel efficiency. The 2022 model will also offer the same 18 mpg in the city and 24 mpg on the highway as the 2021 model. These two combine to yield a combined gas mileage score of 20 MPG, which isn't bad considering how mediocre the gas mileage is of the segment's rivals.

In terms of fuel economy, the Ford Explorer ST is not impressive and is pretty similar to the Chevy Traverse. Kia Telluride is the SUV with the best fuel economy as it returns 20 mpg in the city, 26 mpg on the highway, and 23 mpg combined, followed by Hyundai Palisade that offers 19 mpg in the cityscapes, 26 mpg on the freeway, and 18.8 mpg in the combined use cases. Ford Explorer ST however offers the best range among its competition, thanks to its large fuel tank of 21.8 gallons capacity.

Interior
7.0/10

The 2022 Ford Explorer ST is a midsize SUV. It has advanced safety and infotainment technology. It offers great seats and interior space. Though the Ford Explorer ST may look rugged from the outside, it still boasts a dated interior which drew a certain amount of criticism. For 2022 MY, the interior of the Explorer ST is expected to see big changes and upgrades to all trims, including higher quality materials and soft touchpoints. The 2022 Explorer ST will likely retain its plush, leather-trimmed, heated, and ventilated power-adjustable front bucket seats. The Explorer ST SUV offers a maximum of smooth, effortless utility in a premium package. Wide, cosmopolitan windows bring the outdoors into the somber interior where high-tech comforts await.

Thoughtfully designed, the new Explorer ST SUV delivers the interior space to comfortably fit five while providing spirited driving dynamics. Like its predecessor, the 2022 Ford Explorer ST can seat seven people, or six if you opt for the second-row captain's chairs. Seating in the front of the car is spacious and comfortable, and the driver has good forward visibility. The second-and third-row seats, however, lack adequate support and aren't as spacious as those in some other midsize SUVs. The cargo capacity of this Ford is lower than that of many midsize SUVs. There are 18.2 cubic feet of space behind the third row of the Explorer. Fold the third row, and you have 47.9 cubic feet, and the third and second rows combine for 87.8 cubic feet.

The SUVs mentioned above can all accommodate seven people comfortably. We find the Traverse RS to be the most practical vehicle here as it offers ample legroom and headroom in all three rows. Also, it offers the most legroom of 33.5 inches in the third row which is larger than all of the rivals. In our next spot, we have the Kia Telluride, which offers good shoulder and headroom in the first and second rows, but not enough room in the third row. Also, there is a decent amount of cargo space with 21 cubic feet. Compared to other vehicles, the Hyundai Palisade offers the least space for cargo. Some of the noteworthy interior features of the 2022 Ford Explorer ST SUV include:

  • Tri-zone climate control
  • Push-button start
  • Leather upholstery
  • Heated and power front seats
  • Available twin-panel moonroof
  • Available household-style power outlet

How intuitive is the 2022 Ford Explorer ST SUV’s Infotainment System?

The infotainment system for the 2022 Ford Explorer ST will be similar to that of the outgoing model. The 2022 Ford Explorer ST SUV comes with an easy-to-use infotainment system that allows you to connect your smartphone via Bluetooth to the pre-installed Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. Ford Explorer ST includes a simple-to-use interface and an 8-inch touch screen that comes standard. Although the enhanced system boasts a 10.1-inch vertical touch screen, it doesn't improve usability quite as much as it should. The Explorer ST SUV’s infotainment system allows you to choose which radio stations, GPS maps, and other features that you want to use while driving.

The infotainment system is also voice-activated. There is also a convenient smartphone cubby below the display, which is removed when you upgrade to the larger touchscreen. There is a 12-speaker audio system from Bang & Olufsen. With both infotainment systems, you get a multitude of connectivity features, just like the outgoing 2021 model. These include Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, Wi-Fi hotspot connectivity, Bluetooth, and many more. Other features include navigation, voice recognition, and SiriusXM radio. The 2022 Ford Explorer ST SUV’s infotainment includes the following features:

  • 8-inch touchscreen
  • Available 10.1-inch touchscreen
  • Android Auto and Apple CarPlay
  • Six-speaker sound system
  • Available 14-speaker Bang & Olufsen sound system
  • Available wireless device charging
  • Bluetooth
  • 4 USB ports
  • Navigation
  • Wi-Fi hotspot
Exterior
7.0/10

The 2022 Ford Explorer ST SUV will feature a sleek and aggressive exterior. The 2022 Ford Explorer's stunning exterior design takes cues from the iconic original Explorer that appeared on our roads more than 30 years ago. With its signature vertical bar grille, iconic bladelike exterior contours, and unmistakable profile, the new Explorer is instantly recognizable. A new ST-Line appearance package is available for the 2022 MY, which further enhances this SUV's aesthetic appeal. In addition, the existing color palette is expected to be updated with some new finishes.

The 2022 Ford Explorer ST SUV is a sporty version of the regular Explorer SUV. For 2022 MY, the exterior is expected to be sleeker with its arching headlights, reshaped grille along with integrated fog lights, lower front fascia, and revised taillights. With clean lines and commanding proportions, the 2022 Ford Explorer ST SUV has a big presence. It's wrapped in black ST-specific paint with Ford Performance Blue accents, plus same-color 20-inch aluminum wheels. Improved aerodynamics are present along with a smooth underbody to make it more fuel-efficient. The profile will be similar to the outgoing model, but now with a more pronounced beltline that lends it a more athletic stance.

The spacious interior of the Traverse RS is evident in the wide wheelbase of the vehicle. A bit wider than the Chevrolet Traverse, the Ford Explorer measures 78.9 inches wide. In addition, the Ford Explorer offers the best ground clearance among its competitors. Hyundai Palisade is the most compact offering and in many ways is similar to its corporate cousin Kia Telluride. Some of the notable exterior features include:

  • 20/21-inch alloy wheels
  • LED headlights and DRLs
  • LED taillights
  • Quad exhaust
  • Heated and power-folding side mirrors
Safety
9.0/10

Because the 2022 Ford Explorer ST is yet to be released, we will take its safety on the basis of its predecessor since the 2022 iteration is largely unchanged. NHTSA gave the 2021 Ford Explorer an overall safety rating of 5 out of 5 stars, with 5 stars in frontal and side crashes and 4 stars in rollover tests. A top safety honor, known as the Top Safety Pick+, was awarded to the 2021 Ford Explorer by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety in all six crash tests. The 2021 Ford Explorer ST is well-equipped in terms of safety and driver-assistance features, with Ford Co-Pilot 360 coming as standard.

The 2022 Ford Explorer ST SUV is being built on a new platform to better protect you in the event of an accident. Automatic Emergency Braking will help the driver avoid or mitigate collisions by slamming on the brakes if it senses an impending danger. This vehicle has a rear backup camera which will aid you in easing your way out of tight spaces when going in reverse. It comes with a multitude of advanced safety features such as forward-collision warning, automated emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assistance, and many others. Among the notable features are:

  • Forward collision warning
  • Forward automatic emergency braking
  • Pedestrian detection
  • Ford’s MyKey
  • Driver drowsiness monitoring

Competition
7.0/10

2022 Ford Explorer ST SUV vs 2021 Chevrolet Traverse

The Ford Explorer ST and Chevrolet Traverse both feature V6 engines, however the Chevy Traverse produces less power than the Explorer ST. Therefore, the Explorer is much faster than the Traverse. There is only one drawback to the Explorer, which is less cargo space. In contrast, the Traverse costs much less and has a more appealing interior and a more modern infotainment system.

2022 Ford Explorer ST SUV vs the 2021 Kia Telluride

Listed at $42,490, the Kia Telluride is the most affordable SUV in the competition. In terms of power and performance, however, the Telluride struggles to compete with the Explorer ST. MPG figures for the Telluride are better than those for the Explorer ST, but the third row has less room. Additionally, it offers a larger cargo capacity than the Explorer ST.

2022 Ford Explorer ST SUV vs the 2021 Hyundai Palisade

The Hyundai Palisade sells for $45,275, nearly $8,000 less than Ford's Explorer ST. The Palisade is the slowest of the competition in terms of performance. It does, however, have better fuel efficiency than the Explorer ST, although not by a significant margin. As for cargo, the Palisade's cargo space is only 18 cubic feet, and it has less space in the third row. As well, the Explorer ST's sporty suspension results in more precise handling and performance compared with the Palisade.

Final Verdict
6.0/10

The new Ford Explorer ST SUV is a slight departure from the original. The handling and ride quality is decent too and is easier to control even on twisty roads. The safety features are better though the rear seat headrests still may cause problems for some drivers. The safety ratings compare favorably with other vehicles in its size category.

If you travel often, the Ford Explorer ST SUV has the features to get you where you need to go. Enjoy the convenience of cruise control, push-button start, and SYNC. With the efficient all-wheel drive, your Explorer ST SUV can help get you through whatever weather comes your way. All in all, the 2022 Ford Explorer ST is not particularly a sports car in its looks, but it will make your trip smooth & comfortable.
