The Explorer ST is one of the most powerful SUVs in the segment and features an extremely responsive and smooth 3.0-L V6 engine which helps it have an edge over its rivals, albeit the more powerful Grand Cherokee SRT that gains a very significant lead over the ST.

How well does the 2020 Ford Explorer ST handle?

The sporty SUV features strut front suspension and multi-rear suspension with coil springs on all four wheels. The SUV is also said to have 10 percent stiffer suspension at the front while the rear gets an 8 percent stiffer suspension which has resulted in much-improved driving dynamics and has also reduced the body roll by a fair margin. In addition to this, It features a number of adjustments that have been made to the anti-roll bars to improve corner stability and high-speed performance. The Explorer ST remains stable and composed on the highway and can do triple-digit speeds all day long without any issues. The slow-speed ride quality however is not great and the passengers will not be very comfortable inside the cabin on bad roads.

The gearbox complements the way the engine delivers the maximum power and channels it to all four wheels via an AWD system. The SUV gets a number of modes and different terrain selection options which alter the powertrain in order to offer the best traction and performance required in any of the situations. The sports mode however improves the performance by a significant margin by improving the power output and making the gearbox hold on gear for a longer time. It gets a more powerful, 650-watt cooling fan instead of the regular 500-watt fan to control the additional heat produced by this massive beast.

Braking performance

The brakes of the Ford Explorer ST are powerful and capable enough to make driving safe and stress-free. The SUV comes with a long list of features that improve the braking performance by a significant margin. For those wondering, in addition to basic features like ABS and EBD, other features like traction control, brake assist are also standard. Moreover, larger brake pads and a better braking setup are also available as an optional upgrade.

2020 Ford Explorer ST SUV Fuel Economy

2020 Ford Explorer ST SUV Interior

The 2020 Ford Explorer ST now comes with an all-new cabin with refreshed dashboard layout. All this not only made it a fresh product but has also made it a lot more appealing to a larger segment of the buyers. For starters, the SUV now gets a digital 12-inch instrument console that is easy to read and displays almost every other vehicle information in front of the driver. In addition to this, it gets other features like ventilated seats, heated steering wheel, etc. The overall space available inside the cabin is impressive and the quality of the materials is one of the best in the segment. Having said that, the overall NVH levels inside the cabin and the insulation from the external world have improved by a decent margin.

The Explorer ST gets features like dual-zone automatic climate control, voice-activated air conditioning, Ford pass Connect, rear HVAC ducts, sun blinds, etc. Climbing in and out of the vehicle is not difficult, all thanks to the high seating and ground clearance of the vehicle. Accessing the third row of seats however is difficult and a bit of a workout for many. The seats at the front are comfortable and feature power adjustment while the rear seats are manually adjustable. The seats offer decent support and are extremely comfortable for long journeys.

The cabin of the Explorer ST is extremely comfortable and spacious. The space available inside the cabin is better than most of the rivals. It also betters its more powerful rival by providing an extra row of seating but then compromises on the cargo capacity. It’s one or the other anyway. Some of the interior features of the ST’s cabin are:

  • Power adjustable front seats
  • Ventilated front seats
  • Heated steering wheel
  • Automatic climate control
  • Dual-zone automatic climate control
  • Leather upholstery
  • Sunblinds
  • HVAC ducts for rear passengers

What’s there to keep you entertained?

It also gets 4G LTE and Wi-Fi hotspot connectivity. The audio system comprises a 12-speaker setup from Bang & Olufsen which did leave us impressed by its audio output. Some of the features offered with the infotainment system are mentioned below:

  • 10.1-inch touchscreen system
  • SYNC 3
  • Android Auto and Apple CarPlay
  • 12 speaker Bang & Olufsen Audio System
  • Ford Pass Connect

2020 Ford Explorer ST SUV Exterior

7.0/10

The design of the 2020 Ford Explorer ST saw a huge advancement, all thanks to the all-new and longer platform. It now features a longer wheelbase as well while the front profile has gained a better stance. The 20-inch alloy wheels complement the overall design while the buyers can also opt for optional 21-inch alloy wheels with red-painted brake calipers and larger brake pads. The large grille at the front, strong fog lamp housing design, and skid plates at the front gives the SUV a massive road presence.

The rear design however remains subtle and makes it look elegant and appealing. The rear overhang looks proportionate, unlike many other SUVs in the market. In all, the Explorer ST remains a good-looking SUV and will definitely attract a lot of eyeballs out there on the roads.

In terms of external dimensions, the Explorer ST is at par with most of the rivals but does boast a strong road presence along with a lighter weight due to all the performance upgrades that come along with it. Some of the exterior highlights include the following:

  • Automatic LED headlights
  • 20-inch alloy wheels
  • Heated side mirrors
  • Led tail lights
  • Quad exhaust
  • Skid plates at the front and at the rear

2020 Ford Explorer ST SUV Safety

The Explorer ST is one of the higher trims in the hierarchy and hence comes with a lot of safety features as standard, which can further be expanded via the Premium Technology Package and the Ford Co-Pilot 360 Assist. Ford also offers features like Ford Perimeter Plus, and dash camera with infrared sensors as standalone options. Some of the highlighting driver-aids on offer are:

  • Traction Control
  • Ford Co-Pilot 360
  • Blind Spot Monitoring
  • Cross-traffic alerts
  • Hill-start assist
  • Automatic emergency braking
  • Stability control
  • Tire Pressure Monitoring system

The Explorer ST has not been crash-tested by either the NHTSA and the IIHS but since it is based on the same platform as the non-ST Explorer, which has been crash-tested by both agencies, it will be safe to say that the safety on the ST is bound to be the best out there.

2020 Ford Explorer ST SUV Competition

2020 Ford Explorer ST vs Dodge Durango R/T

The Dodge Durango R/T is known to be one of the most capable, fast, and fun-to-drive SUVs. It gets a powerful engine and a premium cabin but does miss out on many of the features that are being offered with the Explorer ST. In addition to this, the fuel economy on offer is not as impressive as the Explorer ST.

2020 Ford Explorer ST vs Chevrolet Transverse RS

The Transverse RS is one of the most affordable SUVs in the segment and offers decent performance and cabin space. There is no dearth of features but the overall driving dynamics are not as good as the Explorer ST and hence, the latter may just be a better choice for anyone who is looking to buy a vehicle that boasts impressive performance and a fun to drive nature.

2020 Ford Explorer ST vs Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT

Talk about one of the most famous and iconic SUVs in the market and the Jeep Grand Cherokee is likely to find a spot in the conversation. It offers great driving dynamics, superior performance than most of its rivals, and dependable after-sales support and is undoubtedly the better of the two when compared to the Ford Explorer ST. However, the Jeep is quite a bit more expensive. If the price is not an issue The Grand Cherokee SRT is the one to go for.

2020 Ford Explorer ST SUV Final Verdict

With the 2020 update, the Ford Explorer ST now is offered as an all-new package that impresses with its performance, in-cabin experience, features list, and powertrain. It scores high in terms of practicality and versatility and will be a great choice for those who want to use it as their daily driver. The after-sales support enjoyed by Ford owners is also appreciable. All in all, the 2020 Ford Explorer ST is definitely one of the most VFM, practical, and fun SUVs in the segment.
