Expert Review, Pricing Analysis and Buying Guide

The 2022 model year sees several changes in the truck including the introduction of an electric variant for the first time in the form of the Ford F-150 Lightning. The 2022 model is priced at an MSRP of $33,025 for the XL trim and is provided with the choice of several engines including diesel power plants that are reviewed separately. It competes against the likes of the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Double Cab, GMC Sierra 1500 Double Cab, and the RAM 1500 Quad Cab. Few main features of the Ford F-150 Supercab are described in detail in the sections to follow.

2022 Ford F-150 SuperCab Features

The Ford F-150 is offered in up to six trim levels but not all body styles are available in every trim level. The Supercab body style stands between the Regular Cab and the SuperCrew in the sense that it offers five seats but does not offer full-size doors for the rear row. This body style is offered in three trim levels - XL, XLT, and Lariat, and also in different bed lengths and powertrain options. We get options beginning with several engines – a 3.3 L V6, the 2.7 L turbocharged V6, a 3.5 L twin-turbocharged V6, and the 5 L V-8 producing very different power outputs and having different towing capacities. When it comes to features, the truck and its flooring are pretty bare-bones with vinyl seats, manual air-conditioning, windows and mirrors, 8 inch touchscreen infotainment system, single-zone air-conditioning and so on.

We Recommend

We recommend buying the XLT trim level of the Ford F-150 SuperCab as that is the option in which the pickup truly exercises its strengths. It is also offered several options when it comes to the powertrain and one can pick the best option for them depending on whether their priorities are fuel efficiency or performance. If you’re looking for absolute towing capacity or practicality, then it is hard to beat what the Ford F-150 offers. There are also several optional packages available starting from this trim level and hence it makes the most sense for somebody willing to personalize the truck in order to suit their needs and the best way possible.

Release date

Like all models that are launched by Ford, the 2022 Ford F-150 will follow the same model year rollover sequence as the rest of the manufacturer’s line-up. This would mean that the 2022 model will launch by the end of 2021 all over North America. This will mean that the cars will be available in dealerships soon after that and deliveries will start subsequently. However, the timeline will be delayed in the international markets where deliveries are slated to start only by mid-2022.

2022 Ford F-150 SuperCab Engine and Performance

The 2022 Ford F-150 is offered with a choice of several engines – a 3.3 L V6 engine that develops 290 hp and 265 pound-feet of torque is the standard option offered. Next in line, is the 2.7 L turbocharged V-6 that offers 325 hp and 400 pound-feet of torque. One also gets a 3.5 L twin-turbocharged V-6 engine that develops 400 hp and 500-pound-feet of torque. The final engine in the gasoline line-up is a 5 L V8 that is good for 400 hp and 410-pound-feet of torque. The turbocharged 3.0 L diesel engine is also available but that is reviewed separately.

The truck is rear-wheel drive by default but there are four-wheel-drive options in every single powertrain. The transmission unit, however, is a standard 10-speed automatic unit, that is finely curated to handle the torque of the truck. The base engine can have a maximum towing capacity of 8200 pounds and a payload capacity between 1840 to 3250 pounds depending on the configuration. The maximum towing capacity is offered to us in the 3.5 L twin-turbocharged V-6 that can tow up to 14,000 pounds. Even though we’re not exactly bothered about acceleration, the pickup impresses nevertheless with a 0 to 60 mph time of 7.3 seconds even with the slowest engine. This drops down by a lot as you equip the faster engines.

From the results, we can see that the GMC Sierra 1500 Double Cab is the most expensive vehicle in the class. The Ford might not be the most modern or expensive, but it promises excellent towing capacity. However, the GM twins have the highest towing capacity of 9700 lbs, thanks to their higher torque outputs of 305lb.-ft. The GMC’s strengths are its drivetrain itself and make it the fastest accelerating vehicle in the class clocking 6.5 seconds to the 60 mph mark, despite not having the highest power figures. The RAM offers the most powerful base engine and is the fastest over the quarter-mile taking 14.7 seconds. All the entrants in this class are extremely competitive as one can see.

2022 Ford F-150 SuperCab Fuel Economy

It goes without saying that fuel efficiency will go for a toss when you see that the truck offers excellent acceleration as well as payload capacity. However, this is not the case with the most advanced powertrains that are being offered and pickup trucks of late. Even with a fuel capacity of 26 gallons, the Ford F-150 has 650 miles on the highway. It offers excellent efficiency ratings even in the base engine but the 3.5 L hybrid V6 engine is touted to be the most fuel-efficient. One will see a drastic drop in fuel efficiency when considering the 5 L V8.

The Ford impresses the most with its amazing fuel efficiency figures as it is also one of the more powerful cars of the bunch. The same goes for the RAM pickup truck and is to remain head-to-head in the fuel efficiency charts because they also have the largest fuel tank capacity. On the other hand, mechanical twins, the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 lack considerably in efficiency and even have smaller tanks of 26-gallons at their disposal. However, one surprising factor was that even though the GMC has much better acceleration, it returns the similar efficiency as the Chevrolet and hence represents a better compromise out of the two. The GM sisters are rated to manage a combined mileage of 17 MPG and a combined range of 408 miles.

2022 Ford F-150 SuperCab Interior

There is a lot to say about the interiors of the Ford F-150 SuperCab because they have been redesigned in the year 2021. This makes it one of the most concurrent and modern designs that we have around. The material quality is noticeably improved and there are a lot of storage compartments. The convenience features offered in this truck are also excellent and make sure that one feels totally at home while also doubling up as a mobile workspace.

The space offered on the inside is top-notch and can make sure that five adults sit in utmost comfort. Ingress and egress are a little harder in this body style over the SuperCrew which has larger doors and better space in the rear. Cargo capacity is a very strong and practical point of the Ford F-150 as well. When it comes to cargo capacity, there are three different bed lengths that can be availed. These are a 5 ½ foot bed, a 6 ½ foot bed as well as an 8-foot bed.

The RAM 1500 used to set the benchmarks in terms of all aspects in the interior. With the 2021 update, Ford has made up for a lot of it but it still offers the best space in the interiors. Ford has however given a lot of attention to how the truck can be used as a workspace and also to facilitate rest. In terms of material quality as well as features, the Ford and RAM are miles ahead of the GM twins. All of the pickups offer seating for six people and are excellent in terms of the convenience features.

How intuitive is the infotainment system in the 2022 Ford F-150 Supercab?

The infotainment system on offer with the 2022 MY is impressive even with the base trims. As standard, the F-150 SuperCan is equipped with an 8.0 inch infotainment display that has features like Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. With a bigger 12.0 inch infotainment display being offered as an option, one feels that this truck is extremely loaded with technology features. The sound system is a very basic setup but does provide an enjoyable experience. If you want a better experience, however, you are treated to a Bang & Olufsen stereo system. The software on which the infotainment system runs is the upgraded Sync4 which is very intuitive and enjoyable to use. The main infotainment features include-

2022 Ford F-150 SuperCab Exterior

One can be rest assured that the Ford F-150 is capable of attracting people with its exteriors. The front fascia has always been a trademark design and for the 2021 model year, it has evolved without taking away its identity. It has modernized enough in terms of its appearance to look good and also deliver all the functionality that it promises. The proportions on the truck are also pretty nice and give it excellent road presence. It is the smallest truck in comparison with a wheelbase of 145 inches and is also the lightest truck at just 4069 pounds of curb weight, making it one of the better handling trucks in the segment.

The RAM 1500 is a pretty big pickup truck when you compare it to its rivals with a wheelbase that measures 153.5 inches. It is bigger than its rivals in all aspects except width, whereas the Ford offers the most ground clearance in the segment of 8.5 inches. On the other hand, the GMC Sierra 1500 Double Cab is one of the lighter trucks available in the segment. It shares the similar dimensions as the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Double Cab.. The main exterior features include:

  • Hooks - Front Tow, Two (4x4 Only)
  • Spare Tire Carrier - Rear Underframe
  • Fully-Boxed, High-Strength Steel Frame
  • Tailgate, Key Lock

2022 Ford F-150 SuperCab Safety

The 2022 models of the Ford F-150 have not undergone any sort of crash test - be it NHTSA crash testing or IIHS and neither has its 2021 models. However, this is the norm for commercial vehicles like this to skip this process, and hence we cannot assume anything about its safety in a conclusive manner. However, its safety features have generally been noteworthy. It has traditionally been a model line that has performed very well when safety and reliability are concerned. It comes with a number of standard specifications which include anti-lock disc brakes, stability control, and a comprehensive airbag system. Some other salient safety features include:

  • Backup camera and rear parking sensors
  • FordPass Connect
  • Blind Spot Information System
  • Trailer Coverage
  • Cross-Traffic Alert
  • Lane-Keeping System
  • Pre-Collision Assist
  • Automatic Emergency Braking

2022 Ford F-150 SuperCab Competition

2022 Ford F-150 Supercab Vs. 2022 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Double Cab

As we have observed, the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Double Cab does not remain very competitive against the Ford because of its recent model change. The Chevrolet fails to impress buyers even against its stable mate, the GMC Sierra and hence it would undoubtedly be the last truck one would look at in the segment. It has bad fuel efficiency ratings and the interior quality is also not in the same league as the Ford.

2022 Ford F-150 Supercab vs. 2022 RAM 1500 Quad Cab

The RAM 1500 Quad Cab is the leader in the segment and has been consistent with its interior and ride quality. It has, however, been a bit down on performance and fuel efficiency, but it seems to have bettered both of those aspects. However, it can get a bit pricier than the Ford and this is the reason why more people would tend to prefer the F-150 SuperCab.

2022 Ford F-150 Supercab Vs. 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 Double Cab

The GMC and the Chevrolet are pretty much the same truck but the GMC offers slightly better luxury. It is a little larger and also more expensive. It also offers the best acceleration figures in the category but is still a lot heavier than the Ford. It also prioritizes safety and is a good truck in that regard. However, it is awaiting a model change soon and hence we would not prefer this truck now.

2022 Ford F-150 SuperCab Final Verdict

The 2022 Ford F-150 Supercab is an option worth considering for people who are looking for the best when it comes to transportation. It provides very robust powertrains, excellent towing and payload capacities while also providing excellent features, fuel efficiency, interior quality, and so on. Even in the category with very heavy competition and extremely capable rivals, the Ford definitely shines with its offerings. We would definitely consider buying this truck.
