Ford kickstarted the American pickup truck market with its Model TT truck back in 1917. Since then there has been no looking back for the brand and then came along the iconic F Series trucks. Riding on the success of the F-150 truck, Ford introduced much bigger, more powerful, and heavy-duty iterations of the truck in the name of SuperDuty.

Expert Review, Pricing Analysis and Buying Guide

For the 2022 model year, the F-250 SuperDuty will get some trim-specific cosmetic upgrades but will remain mechanically unchanged. The prices are expected to increase only by a slight margin but nothing is official yet.

Features

Since the F-250 Regular Cab will see no major upgrades, the trim levels are also expected to remain the same as well. The Regular Cab is offered in the XL and the XLT trim levels along with a standard RWD or a 4WD layout. The powertrain option remains the same for both the trims though, a 6.2-liter V8 motor. Some of the basic features include 17-inch steel wheels, 40/20/40-split bench seat, FordPass Connect, and Vinyl floor covering among other features. The XLT trim offers a lot more features than the base trim and some of them include Automatic emergency braking, Carpeted floor, Power windows, power door locks, and a pair of 110-volt household-style power outlets.

Which trim should you buy?

If you intend to use the truck strictly for business purposes or you’re a fleet owner, the base XL trim would be the best. The XLT trim, with its handsome list of features, is better suited for personal use.

Engine and Performance

8.0/10

Since the 2022 Ford F-250 SuperDuty will remain mechanically untouched, the huge 6.2-liter naturally aspirated V8 motor is retained. The powerplant dishes out a healthy 385 horsepower and 430 lb-ft of maximum torque. The powertrain is quite refined for a truck and has a deep V8 “rumble” when you fire it up. Under harsh acceleration, it becomes audible but in a nice manner. With the 430 lb-ft of torque output, the truck can tow a maximum of 15,000 lbs and has a payload capacity of 4,260 lbs.

2022 Ford F-250 SuperDuty Regular Cab

The truck accelerates from zero to sixty miles per hour within 8.5 seconds and completes the quarter-mile stretch within 18.1 seconds.

Among the competitors, the RAM 2500 packs in the maximum horsepower while the General Motors duo packs in the maximum torque output. The Ford F-250 puts out the least horsepower numbers but compensates for it with an impressive 15,000 lbs of towing capacity.

How well does the Ford F-250 SuperDuty handle?

Big and heavy pickup trucks were never really meant to be driven in an athletic manner and their high ride height makes them quite unnerving to drive at high speeds around the corners.

For a heavy-duty truck, the F-250 handles properly on-road and offers a comfortable ride quality as well. Going over bumps at considerable speeds will unsettle the truck but it remains under control.

Braking performance

The 2022 Ford F-250 SuperDuty gets one of the biggest sets of brakes in the class. At the front, the truck has 14.3-inch rotors while the rear brakes also measure the same. The braking prowess is decent at the most and will make you feel confident while slowing down but covers a relatively long distance of 140 ft while coming to a halt. Under hard braking conditions, the brakes work in a progressive manner and ensure minimal transfer of weight.

Among the competitors, the Chevrolet Silverado 2500 and the GMC Sierra 2500HD have the best braking performance. The RAM 2500 comes second in this department only by a slight margin. The F-250 takes the bottom seat here.

Fuel Economy

9.0/10

EPA doesn’t test heavy-duty pickup trucks hence the official ratings for the F-250 are not available. But from estimation and taking into account the power ratings of the truck, it returns a meager 15mpg of highway mileage while the city mileage will be something around 10-11 mpg at the most. The estimations are not so disastrous for the truck since it can tow a significant amount of load and weighs over 6,000 lbs.

The same is the case with the rivals as well. There are no specific fuel economy ratings for the rivals as well. But considering the power and torque figures, the RAM 2500 expectedly has the least fuel economy figures and overall driving range as well. The Chevrolet Silverado 2500 and the GMC Sierra 2500 will be in the same ballpark as the F-250 considering their power and performance stats.

Interior

9.0/10

The cabin of the 2022 Ford F-250 is huge and spacious right from the base XL trim level. The CrewCab models offer acres of space inside the cabin with excellent visibility from inside.

2022 Ford F-250 SuperDuty Regular Cab front seats

The base trim lacks some features but is extremely practical and doesn’t wear that bare-bones look. The XLT trim adds a handsome yet practical list of features and makes the truck a perfect companion for every day. The seats are covered in cloth upholstery and the dashboard gets an extensive amount of hard plastic surfaces but the build quality is top-notch.

Among the competitors, the RAM 2500 is the most comfortable and tech-rich truck. But the GMC Sierra 2500 and the Chevrolet Silverado 2500 offers the maximum headroom and legroom, making it more friendly for tall drivers and co-passengers.

Some interior features include:

  • 40/20/40-split bench seat
  • Power windows and door locks(XLT)
  • Two 110-volt household-style power outlets(XLT)
  • Manual-folding mirrors
  • Carpeted floor and cloth upholstery

What’s there to keep you entertained?

The base XL trim of the F-250 gets a basic 4.2-inch infotainment display with very limited features such as a single USB port and FordPass Connect. The XLT trim gets a bigger 8-inch touchscreen display with a smooth user interface and crisp graphics.

2022 Ford F-250 SuperDuty Regular Cab infotainment screen

This system also offers Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as well.

Some infotainment features include:

  • 8-inch LCD touchscreen with 4.2-inch productivity screen (XLT)
  • Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration (XLT)
  • Sync infotainment on XL trim and Sync3 on XLT trim
  • FordPass 4G mobile hotspot
  • Dual USB ports
  • SiriusXM satellite radio with seek-scan

Exterior

6.0/10

The exterior of the 2022 Ford F-250 SuperDuty screams toughness and justifies the term “heavy duty” perfectly with an immense road presence. The base XL trim gets a basic exterior with black painted steel bumpers and a chrome bar across the front grille. The XLT improves things a lot with bigger 18-inch alloy wheels and chrome bumpers. The front end looks a bit on the aggressive side with a huge grille and the C-shaped headlamps flanking it nicely.

The GMC Sierra 2500 and the Chevrolet Silverado 2500 impresses a lot with their towering ground clearance of 10.1-inches but it is only useful while going off the roads and pose a greater risk during accidents. The RAM 2500 has the lowest ground clearance while the F-250 has an average ground clearance of 8.5-inches. The General Motors duo is quite bigger in overall exterior dimensions too as compared to the RAM 2500 and the F-250.

Some exterior features:

  • 18-inch alloy wheels
  • Heated exterior mirrors
  • Chrome bumpers and grille
  • Halogen headlamps

Safety

7.0/10

The 2021 Ford F-250 secured a 4-star safety score from the NHTSA while the IIHS didn’t touch the truck. Apart from the ratings, the truck is built on 95% high-strength steel while the body is made from 6000 series aluminum alloy, taking the structural rigidity to a new level for a truck.

The safety techs include:

  • Driver and passenger front-impact airbags
  • Side impact beams
  • Seatbelt pretensioners
  • Automatic emergency braking
  • Brake Assist
  • ABS
  • Front and rear parking sensors
  • Blind-spot monitoring sytem with rear cross-traffic alert

Competition

9.0/10

Ford F-250 vs RAM 2500

The RAM 2500 is the most technologically advanced and comfortable truck in the segment. It offers solid performance, decent towing capacity, and a feature-rich cabin above all. On the safety aspect too, the truck just as good as the rivals. The F-250 falls short in front of the RAM 2500 in terms of cabin comfort and features.

RAM 2500

Ford F-250 vs Chevrolet Silverado 2500

The Chevrolet Silverado 2500 gives tough competition to the F-250 in almost every aspect starting from the price and features. The Silverado 2500 offers a more composed ride quality than the F-250 and has a better steering system too. It might fall short in terms of outright towing prowess but it compensates for it in other areas.

Chevrolet Silverado 2500

Ford F-250 vs GMC Sierra 2500

The GMC Sierra 2500 is the mechanical twin of the Silverado 2500 hence offers similar performance and towing capabilities to the latter as well. The SIerra, however, looks way better than the F-250, and combining the strengths of its mechanical twin, poses as a superb alternative to the F-250.

GMC Sierra 2500

Final Verdict

The 2022 Ford F-250 has a lot of positive points going for it starting from the base price and the excellent features it offers right from the XLT trim level. The performance of the base 6.2-liter V8 is also more than adequate for everyday purposes but just like any other rivals in the segment, the higher trims with more capabilities become quite pricey rather too quickly.system
