The F-250 series trucks are not discussed regularly the way we talk about light-duty F-150 trucks, the reason is pretty simple. The kind of utility and power they offer isn’t something needed by everyone, but still, they remain quite usable on a daily basis. For 2022, the truck will go through some upgrades which include cosmetics, however, the truck will be available with no major change when it comes to the mechanics inside.

Expert Review, Pricing Analysis and Buying Guide

The 2022 Ford F-250 SuperDuty SuperCab Diesel comes in 6.75 feet or 8 feet bed configurations, which makes it suitable for every kind of buyer. The rival trucks like the GMC Sierra 2500HD, Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD, and RAM 2500 are all equally powered and capable trucks in the segment. Continue with the article to know how the truck from Ford performs in front of the other American giants in the segment.

Features

The 2022 Ford F-250 SuperDuty SuperCab Diesel comes in 3 trim levels, namely XL, XLT, and the Lariat. The base trim is a work truck and only comes with utterly necessary features like air-conditioning, manually adjustable seats, and almost zero power features. For entertainment purposes, you will get a little LCD screen with AM/FM and MP3 capabilities. Up next comes the XLT trim, which gets instantly better with features like alloy wheels, cloth upholstery, and an 8-inch touch screen with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.

The best you can get in the SuperCab configuration is the Lariat trim, and it gets all the convenience and luxury features you would want. All the power features like folding mirrors and adjustable seats are part of the standard equipment here along with leather upholstery. A new addition to the Lariat trim is the new 12-inch touch screen which also gets wireless Android Auto & Apple CarPlay. There are a lot of optional packages on this truck, the important ones are listed below the table.

Apart from the standard features, the truck also offers a variety of optional packages. The first one is the 5th wheel/ Gooseneck Hitch ($500) which offers a 7-pin connector on the driver's side of the bed, one frame under-bed cross member, 5 pickup bed attachment points. The Camper package ($150) offers rear auxiliary springs, slide-in camper certification, extra heavy service front suspension. The Trailer Tow package ($2,600) brings lane departure warning, increased gross combined weight to 30,000 lbs, 360-degree parking, front and rear parking sensors, trailer reverse guidance, hitch assist, automatic steering, and brake control. The Heavy-duty alternator for $110 comes with a 377-amp heavy-duty alternator.

Which Trim should you buy?

Getting the base trim only makes sense if you are a business owner with continuous towing or utility needs, otherwise, your family is getting bored inside that cabin. The XLT trim comes sufficiently equipped with features like cloth upholstery and a better infotainment screen. We are set on the safety front with features like auto emergency braking, blind-spot monitors, and trailer brake control. One thing to keep in mind is that we are speaking about the diesel variants, and that alone will add an extra of 10 grand on the final bill excluding taxes and random charges, so plan your optional packages around it.

Release Date

No correct information is out on the release date of the 2022 Ford F-250, however, Ford has started the production for the same.

Engine and Performance

7.0/10

We are discussing the diesel variant of the 2022 F-250 SuperDuty, and there is only one option in this regard. The 6.7L Turbodiesel V8 engine, which produces a good 475 hp and a bonkers 1,050 lb-ft of torque, and all of that twisting force is available from as low as 1,600 RPM. The torque figures only are enough to let you guess the kind of power this truck generates. Even though acceleration is never a forte for a truck, but 0-60 mph in 7.2 seconds is impressive. The engine can be had in 2WD or 4WD. Also, the bed or cabin configurations aren’t restricted, so you are free to customize this truck.

The 10-speed automatic transmission works well, but we still have some complaints about it. This setup sometimes hunts for gears, even if you are in towing mode. When equipped properly, the F-250 can tow 30,000 lbs. If you are towing at its full capacity, the engine does feel a little stressed, but that’s totally fine in our books. Try towing your usual trailers, the engine won’t even acknowledge the work getting done, truly effortless.

The Ford F-250 SuperDuty is a huge truck, and one should anticipate the driving spaces before taking it out in tighter spaces, chances of getting stuck are high. With that said, driving the truck is a tedious job, especially in 3 point turns. To add to this workout, the numb steering makes guessing the precise placement of this truck difficult. In urban areas, driving this truck will make you more anxious just because of its massive size.

Except for the RAM, all the rivals have almost similar horsepower figures, but this doesn’t stop it from being a workhorse. The payload capacity on the RAM 2500 is 7,680 lbs in a dual-rear-wheel setup, and it can tow a trailer up to 35,100 lbs. The GMC and Chevy truck can also tow 35,500 lbs if equipped with a fifth-wheel hitch setup or 20,000 lbs in a conventional setup. The 7,442 lbs of payload capacity is similar to both the GM trucks. All the trucks are truly capable of doing some serious work regardless of their on-paper power figures.

Fuel Economy

5.0/10

Anything that can tow up to 30,000 lbs or carry loads up to 7700 lbs won’t be getting tested for their fuel efficiency anyway. These trucks are not meant for efficiency, rather getting work done is the motto here. The gasoline mill on the F-250 gets 15 MPG on the highway, so the diesel mill will definitely get better than that, and with the 29-gallon fuel capacity, we should have a commendable driving range, which we can expect to fall in the same range as the rivals in the competition.

We don’t have any fuel efficiency numbers to back us up with, but with the kind of work these trucks do, we don’t think that anyone would mind pumping fuel. Also, all the trucks come with decently sized fuel tanks to make them last longer. However, when compared, the GM twins offer the biggest tank of 36 gallons, followed by RAM and Ford with a fuel tank capacity of 32 and 29 gallons, respectively.

Interior

4.0/10

The 2022 F-250 SuperDuty SuperCab, in the base trim, gets an interior ready take on any construction site, but that’s the thing in every base trim of any truck. The material choice here is plastic for the dash and vinyl for the seats. Though the cabin won’t feel like you can have some nice family time inside but the space is in abundance, at least on the front row. Being the SuperCab configuration means tighter second-row space, but the headroom is massive no matter what.

The base truck doesn’t get any power features, so you are left hanging with manual adjustments only, but as you go to the XLT trim, the seats get cloth upholstery and carpeted floor welcome you as you jump inside the cabin. The Lariat trim, which is the last step in the SuperCab config, gets the most luxurious cabin with leather upholstery and power-adjustable front seats. Overall, the cabin space is plenty, but the quality of the interior has quite a wide variety to it. What seems like a super basic work truck on the base trim becomes a rather plush and luxurious truck in the Lariat trim.

The RAM 2500 is the only truck that doesn’t come in a Double cab configuration, and that allows it to have either more cargo space or more interior space in the Crew cab setup, there’s no middle ground for this. The rest of the rivals have similar space inside, and the cargo carrying capacity in the bed is similar as well. The interiors of all these trucks upgrade gradually as you go up in the trim levels, and the base trims get basic rugged interiors. Standout interior features include:

  • Leather upholstery
  • Power sliding cargo bed window
  • Power-adjustable front seats
  • Carpeted floor and cloth upholstery
  • Dual-zone automatic climate control

What’s there to keep you entertained?

The base trim of 2022 F-250 SuperDuty gets a 4.2-inch LCD screen for entertainment purposes and gets our tried and tested circular knobs for volume and radio tuning. These are the best control methods while driving alone. The XLT trim gets an 8-inch touchscreen which used to be standard on all of the trims except for base and a 6-speaker sound system is standard in the SuperCab configuration.

The XLT trim gets Android Auto & Apple CarPlay as well for convenient smartphone connectivity, and these get wireless connectivity in the Lariat trim. This feature is new for 2022, and another big surprise for the top-end trim buyers is the inclusion of a big 12-inch touch screen setup with an 11-speaker Bang & Olufsen sound system, all standard. Standout infotainment features include:

  • 4.2-inch LCD screen
  • 8-inch / 12-inch touch screen
  • Navigation
  • SiriusXM
  • Bang & Olufsen sound system
  • Wi-Fi hotspot

Exterior

4.0/10

Pick-up trucks are the most badass vehicles on the planet, and the F-250 series takes the design and elevates it to a whole another level. Ford’s design philosophy is very well known to everyone by now, and the moment we see those C-shaped LED DRLs, we know it’s a Ford truck. The base trim of the 2022 Ford F-250 SuperDuty SuperCab Diesel doesn’t look cheap as it gets a blacked-out grille and bumpers. Even the steel wheels are painted to give them a better look.

The SuperDuty name is stamped on the hood to establish dominance. There aren’t many lines or shapes on the body of the F-250, just an elevated hood and flared-out fenders are enough to make this truck stand out among its peers. High-end models like the XLT and upwards get chrome plating on the grille and bumpers. We like this blacked-out stealthy look more than those.

General Motors trucks are the heaviest in the segment, and in this specific cab configuration. Lengthwise, all the trucks are similar, only the GM trucks get 2 inches of extra length. The GM trucks offer a much better ground clearance compared to the RAM and Ford. When comparing the wheelbase of all the trucks in the competition, all the trucks stand very close to each other. Standout exterior features include:

  • Autolamp Aero-Composite Halogen Auto High-Beam Daytime Running Lights Preference Setting Headlamps
  • Front Fog Lamps and Perimeter/Approach Lights
  • Chrome bumpers and grille

  • Black-painted steel bumpers
  • Black plastic exterior trim

Safety

8.0/10

The 2022 Ford F-250 SuperDuty SuperCab Diesel does come with many active safety features both standard and optional, but what about the structural integrity? Can it take an impact when it matters the most? NHTSA has crash-tested the F-250 only on the front side, and it has got a 4-star rating there, the same result can be observed in the rollover rating with 19.1% rollover risk. The IIHS hasn’t tested the truck for its crashworthiness, but considering the way it has performed in the federal testings, we can rest assured of its structural strength. Standout safety features include:

  • Blindspot monitor
  • Automatic emergency braking
  • Integrated trailer brake control
  • Rear cross-traffic alert
  • Rear parking sensors
  • BLIS with Trailer Tow Coverage Blind Spot
  • Pre-Collision Assist with Automatic Emergency Braking

Competition

5.0/10

2022 Ford F-250 SuperDuty SuperCab Diesel vs 2021 RAM 2500 Crew Cab Diesel

Ford offers better power and ground clearance compared to the RAM. The infotainment screen advantage of the RAM 2500 had been diminished by the Ford, so now the only advantage RAM gets over the Ford is the better overall interior and space. The truck is $2,000 more expensive than the Ford F-250 and doesn’t really have any significant advantage over the F-250. When it comes to choosing between the two, there is no clear winner, and thus it all depends on which brand you prefer more here.

2022 Ford F-250 SuperDuty SuperCab Diesel vs 2022 GMC Sierra 2500HD Double Cab Diesel

The 2022 Ford F-250 SuperDuty gets a better engine and a better 10-speed automatic transmission. The GM truck offers better cargo bed capacity, but the F-250 excels in towing and in payload capacity. The base trims of both the trucks are barebones work trucks but get better as you go high in trims. The F-250 now has an infotainment advantage with that 12-inch touch screen and 11 speaker sound system, but this is completely personal. Overall, the F-250 seems like a much better option here.

2022 Ford F-250 SuperDuty SuperCab Diesel vs 2022 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD Double Cab Diesel

The specialty of the pick-up trucks is the customizability they offer. Both the trucks here come with similar features, almost. When properly equipped, the Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD can tow 36,000 lbs, which is dead near the 37,000 lbs capacity of the Ford. Visually it’s the closest competitor to the F-250 in our opinion. The Chevy gets a little better safety equipment like front and rear parking sensors and lane-keep assist which the Ford misses.

Final Verdict

Ford has an unshakable reputation in the pickup truck segment, be it an F-150 or heavier options like the F-250 and F-350. The trucks come in all kinds of engine options, but the one we are talking about, the 6.7L turbo-diesel V8 is a beast, and the rivals can’t get near it in terms of overall performance. The thing is that all the trucks in this segment are equally powered and their tow ratings are almost similar to each other. The only differentiating and deciding factors would be the design and the features they offer like the new infotainment setup the F-250 will come with makes it more appealing than ever. Ford does miss some active safety features. Summing it up, the 2022 F-250 SuperDuty SuperCab with the diesel mill is a true endurance champion you can rely on, on the worksite and on the picnic site as well.
