Expert Review, Pricing Analysis and Buying Guide

The 2022 model year sees several changes in the truck but most are restricted to changes in the equipment. The 2022 model starts at an MSRP of $48,545 for the XL trim. It is provided with the choice of two gasoline engines and one diesel engine that is reviewed separately. It competes against the likes of the Chevrolet Silverado 3500 HD Extended Cab, GMC Sierra 3500 HD Extended Cab, and RAM 3500 Quad Cab. Few main features of the Ford F-350 SuperDuty Supercab are described in detail in the sections to follow.

Features

The Ford F-350 is offered in three trim levels in the SuperCab body style while it is offered in six trims with the Crew Cab. The SuperCab gives you the best of both in the sense that it offers six seats but does not compromise on the cargo capacity. This body style is offered in three trim levels - XL, XLT, and Lariat, and also in different bed lengths and powertrain options. The base trim comes with 17-inch painted wheels, front tow hooks, air-conditioning, heavy-duty vinyl seats, 4.2-inch center display screen, and remote engine starting.

We Recommend

Although all trim levels the Ford F-350 have its unique strengths, we recommend buying the XLT which comes in at dollars and $57,960 this gives you several very useful features such as heated side mirrors, 110 V household-style power outlet, carpeted floors, cloth seats, and an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system. If you’re looking for absolute towing capacity or practicality, then creature comforts might not matter to you but if you have used them pertaining to family purposes and so on, the base trim level will be a bit too bare-bones. The powertrain configurations that you should choose would depend on your use case but the base engine which is the 6.2 L V8 along with rear-wheel-drive should suffice for most intents and purposes.

2022 Ford F-350 SuperDuty SuperCab Release date

Like all models that are launched by Ford, the 2022 Ford F-350 will follow the standard timeline for the company. The model year rollover sequence is such that the 2022 model will launch by the end of 2021 all over North America. Although there are some dealers and we expect uncertainties due to the pandemic as well as the chip shortage globally, we expect that the cars will be available in dealerships at the start of 2022 and deliveries will start subsequently. However, the news is not pleasant when you see the sights of thousands of vehicles being built and stored in yards because they are awaiting computer chips that enable several of their electronic systems.

Engine and Performance

8.0/10

The 2022 Ford F-350 is offered with a choice of several engines – the standard 6.2 L V8 delivers 385 hp and 430 pound-feet of torque is itself a very good engine. Then there is the 7.3 L V-8 that offers 430 hp and 475 pound-feet of torque. One also gets a 6.7 L diesel V8 that produces 475 hp and 1050 pound-feet of torque. The diesel version is reviewed separately and hence is not covered in this particular review. The powertrain offered is rear-wheel drive by default but there are four-wheel-drive options in both engines.

And all the engines that are discussed above are mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission that can be seen in most Ford cars. But this transmission is strengthened for use in heavy-duty trucks. The base engine itself has a towing capacity of 16,700 pounds and a payload capacity of 7850 pounds. This is massive and should be mind-blowing but there are versions of the truck that can tow up to 37,000 pounds. We’re not exactly bothered about acceleration, as is generally the norm for testing heavy-duty trucks.

The GMC is a very expensive vehicle in the class and is pitched as the premium offering. The Ford does not have the highest horsepower numbers but promises excellent towing capacity. However, the GM twins manage to better it by a small amount even though its engine is only a bit more powerful. The RAM has the most powerful engine and is the fastest to drive but has the lowest towing capacity. The GM twins have managed to strike a good balance and have the largest engine capacity at 6.6 L. The top speed of all trucks is around 130 mph.

Fuel Economy

9.0/10

One does not expect a truck to be fast, tow almost 17,000 pounds, and return good fuel efficiency while doing so. It is true that trucks have been getting progressively more fuel-efficient over time but still has not exactly been noteworthy. To compensate for this, they offer excellent fuel capacity and hence give you sufficient range to travel long distances without refilling. The Ford F-350 offers 34 gallons in its fuel tank which is one of the largest tanks that you can see around. The fuel efficiency numbers however are not exactly very great. In real-life tests, they returned about 15 MPG on the highway.

Like we have mentioned, EPA does not test heavy-duty trucks regarding aspects of this fuel efficiency. In the unofficial tests by independent agencies, Ford really impresses the most with its amazing fuel efficiency figures at nearly 15 MPG. The same goes for the RAM pickup truck and is to remain head-to-head with the Ford. The Chevrolet has the exact same numbers as the GMC because they are in fact the same pickup truck and both of these return about 14 MPG which is only slightly lower. These trucks also have the largest fuel tank at 36 gallons. The RAM has the smallest fuel tank at 32 gallons which is itself huge.

Interior

9.0/10

Ford has done a complete redesign for the interiors in the year 2021. The design is sharp and yet very practical. It has made huge strides in the department of ergonomics and materials are also hard wearing and durable. The material quality is noticeably improved and there are a lot of storage compartments. The convenience features offered in this truck are decent and not too luxurious. However, it can double up as an excellent workspace which is very reassuring for the target crowd of this vehicle.

The space offered in the interiors is better than most because you will find it in the market. Ingress and egress are a little harder in this body style over the SuperCrew which has larger doors and better space in the rear. If you need more creature comforts, you have to go for the lariat trim level. Cargo capacity is a very strong point and that is the option of choosing between the 6 ½-footbed as well as the 8-foot bed. There is a massive center console that has several storage compartments. There is also super duty badging on the – in case someone was doubting about the capabilities of this truck seeing its luxurious interior.

To date, the RAM 3500 was the category leader in terms of all aspects of the interior. With the 2021 update, Ford has made up for a lot of it but falls short in some aspects. However, this is not a point we would fuss much about as cars in this category have to serve much bigger purposes than providing luxurious interiors. Ford has however given a lot of attention to how the truck can be used as a workspace and also facilitate rest for drivers. The GMC is also quite luxurious but suffers the most in terms of space. All of the pickups offer seating for six people and are excellent in terms of the convenience features. The main interior features of the interior include:

  • Single-zone air conditioning
  • Vinyl flooring
  • Power door locks and power windows
  • Power-locking tailgate
  • Front-seat lumbar adjustments
  • LED bed lighting
  • Optional Leather upholstery
  • Power-adjustable front seats with heating and ventilation
  • Power-adjustable pedals
  • Remote start and remote tailgate release

How intuitive is the infotainment system in the 2022 Ford F-350 SuperDuty SuperCab?

There is a lot of change regarding the infotainment system for this model year and everything from the XLT trim levels is being equipped with an 8.0-inch infotainment display that has features like Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. There is also a bigger 12.0-inch infotainment display being offered as an option. The driver information display only has a small digital screen and the dials are analog. The software on which the infotainment system runs is the slightly outdated Sync3 while cars like the Ford F-150 get the updated Sync4. There are all necessary features regarding infotainment including Wi-Fi hotspot, SiriusXM satellite radio, and so on. The main infotainment features include-

  • 8-inch infotainment screen
  • Hands-Free Phone
  • Voice Recognition System
  • Audible Text Messaging
  • Bluetooth
  • Android Auto and Apple CarPlay
  • Satellite Radio
  • USB Port
  • Smartphone Interface
  • Ford’s SYNC4
  • 4G LTE Wi-Fi
  • FordPass

Exterior

8.0/10

The Ford F-350 has absolutely menacing exteriors. Although this is not something that could be used to lure potential customers for such a functional vehicle, one can rest assured that the Ford F-350 is capable of attracting people with its exteriors. It looks pretty massive and in a slightly aggressive way reminds people of its functionality. It has modernized enough in terms of its appearance to look good and also deliver when it comes to its duties. The proportions on the truck are also pretty nice and give it an excellent road presence. It is as heavy as a small mountain at 6053 pounds.

If you compare all the trucks in terms of dimensions, the RAM 1500 is a pretty big pickup truck but it is surprising that it is not the heaviest. The RAM 3500 is bigger than its rivals in all aspects except width, whereas the Ford offers the most ground clearance in the segment. Ford also offers an off-road package if you wish to take it beyond where the road ends. The GMC is about 100 pounds lighter which is surprising considering it shares most parts with the Chevrolet Silverado 3500. The wheelbase of the Ford F-350 is also the smallest and this affects its cargo capacity a little bit but since it has the adequate towing capacity, we’re not complaining. The main exterior features include:

  • Hooks - Front Tow, Two (4x4 Only)
  • Spare Tire Carrier - Rear Underframe
  • Fully-Boxed, High-Strength Steel Frame
  • Tailgate, Key Lock
  • Cargo Lamp, Integrated with Center High-Mounted Stop Lamp (CHMSL)
  • Daytime Running Lamps
  • 17-Inch Silver Steel Wheels
  • Optional chrome accessories

Safety

9.0/10

Heavy-duty trucks and commercial vehicles are not usually tested for crash safety by any agency. Likewise, the 2022 models of the Ford F-350 have not undergone any sort of crash test - be it NHTSA crash testing or IIHS. The same applies to its 2021 models as well as other vehicles sharing its platform. However, its safety features have generally been noteworthy. The truck also comes with a high-strength steel chassis and aluminum panels. It has traditionally been a model line that has performed very well in crash tests and also offers a lot of safety features as standard. The main safety features include:

  • Anti-lock disc brakes
  • Stability control
  • Front-side airbags
  • Side-curtain airbags
  • Backup camera and rear parking sensors
  • FordPass Connect
  • Blind Spot Information System
  • Trailer Coverage
  • Cross-Traffic Alert
  • Lane-Keeping System
  • Pre-Collision Assist
  • Automatic Emergency Braking

Competition

6.0/10

2022 Ford F-350 SuperDuty SuperCab Vs. 2022 Chevrolet Silverado 3500 HD Extended Cab

The Chevrolet does have better road manners than the Ford but does not match up to the blue oval in terms of any aspect that should concern a buyer of a heavy-duty pickup truck. As we have observed, the Chevrolet does not remain very competitive against the Ford in terms of interiors, towing capacity or performance. The Chevrolet Silverado 3500 HD also performs a little worse than its stable-mate, the GMC Sierra and hence would be the last truck one would look at in the segment. It is also the heaviest in the segment and has slightly worse fuel efficiency figures.

2022 Ford F-350 SuperDuty SuperCab vs. 2022 RAM 3500 Quad Cab

The RAM 3500 had been the category benchmark for several aspects. It has an amazing price, has great interiors and also offers the most plush ride quality you will find in the segment. It has however been a bit down on performance and fuel efficiency till now but it seems to have bettered both of those aspects and come out as a competitive offering in those departments as well. The interior space is also slightly better but the 2020 redesign gives the Ford trucks a lot of functional design changes in the interiors.

2022 Ford F-350 SuperDuty SuperCab Vs. 2022 GMC Sierra 3500 Extended Cab

Many people wonder why the GMC is charged a premium over the Chevrolet because the GMC and the Chevrolet are pretty much the same truck. But in reality, the GMC Sierra 3500 offers slightly better luxury and material quality throughout. It is a little lighter than the Chevrolet. But when you compare it with the Ford truck, it is slightly out-dated and is a bit down on features. One similarity is that it also has a very big emphasis on safety and is a good truck in that regard. However, it has to improve several aspects to remain competitive in 2022.

Final Verdict

The 2022 Ford F-350 SuperDuty SuperCab is a great option if you’re in the market for a full-size heavy-duty pickup truck. It provides very powerful engines, excellent towing and payload capacities while also providing a large number of features, decent fuel efficiency, improved interior quality, and so on. Even in the category with very heavy competition and extremely capable rivals, the Ford Motor Company definitely shines with its offerings. We have to give the Ford for building such a capable and attractive vehicle.
