Agile handling and roomy front seats are best highlights of the 2017 Ford Fiesta ST Hatchback. In the segment, Ford Fiesta gives a run for money to the likes of Honda Civic, Hyundai Veloster, and Mazda 3. Cargo capacity, rear seat space, and excellent safety ratings are what competitors offer better than the 2017 Ford Fiesta ST Hatchback.

2017 Ford Fiesta ST Hatchback Engine

6.3/10
“This little engine brought the Fiesta from zero to 60 mph in 8.9 seconds, which is a bit quicker than average for the class. EPA fuel economy estimates are 35 mpg combined (31 city/41 highway), matching the thriftiest cars in the segment.”- Edmunds

Engine and Transmission

There is a single engine and gearbox option available with the Fiesta ST Hatchback. The standard 1.6L i4 engine produces 197 horsepower in addition to 202 lb.-ft. of torque. Leave for the 201 hp delivered by the Hyundai Veloster Turbo R-Spec, all other competitors have lesser engine power to spare.

Ford Fiesta ST 4dr is the only ride amongst the class rivals to traverse a quarter-mile in under 15 seconds. Competitors require more than 15 seconds to cover a quarter-mile.

Ride and Handling

A compact build allows the Fiesta ST Hatchback to deliver one of the best driving performances. The torsion beam rear suspension allows for a fun riding experience. Despite boasting a front-wheel-drive system, 2017 Ford Fiesta ST Hatchback supports a lively driving experience thanks to the brake-based torque vectoring formula.

2017 Ford Fiesta ST might be one of the best rides for cornering. This is because of the great degree of adjustment offered with the front axle. Handling is simply impressive, fierce but stable. Even though the electronically power-assisted steering is heavy, it offers a greater level of accuracy and responsiveness. All in all, Ford Fiesta ST Hatchback is an enjoyable ride.

Braking

2017 Ford Fiesta ST Hatchback has an impressive braking power. This is partly due to the fact that the ride has a compact and lightweight build.

Ford Fiesta ST Hatchback’s braking power is great even though it has the smallest brake sizes in the competition.

2017 Ford Fiesta ST Hatchback Interior

4.0/10
“Hard plastics adorn just about every surface, but in ST trim, there’s an ST-specific steering wheel and a milled aluminum gear shifter. Standard sports seats are fitted to the front, but it’s the optional Recaro bucket items that you’ll really want for their extra support, striking looks, ST-embroidery, and heated functionality when the chill hits.”- carbuzz

Seating and Comfort

Although standard sports seats are available in the front, it is the optional Recaro bucket seats that maximizes comfort in the Fiesta ST Hatchback. While the front seats offer enormous legroom and headroom, they aren’t much supportive as that offered by the competitors.

Unlike the front seats, the rear seats feature cramped legroom. Moreover, there is no adjustments available for helping with the cargo. Adults will find the rear seats more restrictive than teenagers and children.

Infotainment System

The standard infotainment system is awful and muddled with buttons that not only look cheap but also feels so. The latest SYNC 3 is available as an optional upgrade to the infotainment system. In addition to bringing connectivity options to the table, the SYNC 3 also comes with a good 6.5-inch touch display and support for voice controls.

Besides beaming out a clean interface, the SYNC 3 infotainment system has an attractive persona. A 6-month subscription of SiriusXM is complimentary with the infotainment system. Moreover, an 8-speaker audio system is there to enjoy the audio. Unfortunately, there is no support for Wi-Fi hotspot as well as no auxiliary input is available.

Interior Features

Though the interior of the 2017 Ford Fiesta ST Hatchback is mostly plastic, it is carefully assembled. The cabin and front seats are spacious. A high roof combined with large windows make up for an excellent visibility. Interior features boasted the 2017 Ford Fiesta ST Hatchback include:

  • Ambient lighting with 7 customizable colors
  • Heated front seats [Optional]
  • Leather-wrapped steering wheel with aluminum trim and ST badging
  • Recaro sport seats [Optional]
  • Supportive snug buckets
  • Tilting and telescoping steering column

2017 Ford Fiesta ST Hatchback Exterior

6.3/10
“The Fiesta ST isn’t as fierce looking as the rally-ready Ford Focus RS, but a lowered ride height and mild exterior mods make it more appealing than the modest base models from which it is derived. Blacked-out wheels and red brake calipers are worth the extra cash for a dash of sportiness.”- caranddriver

Dimension and Weight

The Hatchback has the least-in-league curb weight. The ride has the most compact dimensions amongst the competition. Leave for the height, length and width are least in the competition.

2017 Ford Fiesta ST Hatchback Safety

2.0/10
2017 Ford Fiesta ST Hatchback is awarded a 4-star (out of 5) rating by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration a.k.a. NHTSA. The 1-star is deducted primarily because of the ride’s incapability of dealing with the interference of the passenger-side rear door during a side impact collision.

Further, the hatchback gained top scores in four categories assessed by the IIHS. However, the ride gets a “Marginal” rating for the assessment of small overlap front driver side. Although the ride comes with a number of safety features, such as the SPACE architecture and the Post-Crash Alert System, no advanced safety systems, like a rearview camera and parking sensors, are available.

Safety Features

  • SPACE (Side Protection And Cabin Enhancement) Architecture
  • SecuriLock Passive Anti-Theft Engine Immobilizer System SOS
  • Post-Crash Alert System
  • Airbag – Driver’s knee, front-seat, side-curtain
  • 3-mode AdvanceTrac ESC (electronic stability control)

2017 Ford Fiesta ST Hatchback Competition

Ford Fiesta ST VS Honda Civic Sport Hatchback 4dr

With a 1.5L i4 engine at its disposal, Honda Civic Sport Hatchback 4dr has 180 hp and 162 lb.-ft. of torque. For gear-shifting, the ride relies on a continuously variable automatic transmission mode. Honda Civic Sport Hatchback 4dr shoots to 60 MPH in 6.6 seconds.

Curb weight for the Honda Civic Sport Hatchback 4dr is 2930 lbs. Hence, it is bulkier than the Ford Fiesta ST and the Hyundai Veloster. The ride, however, delivers an excellent combined fuel economy of 32 mpg. It also has the most wheelbase of 106.3 inches in the competition.

Ford Fiesta ST VS Hyundai Veloster Turbo R-Spec

Like the Ford Fiesta ST Hatchback 4dr, Hyundai Veloster Turbo R-Spec is powered by a 1.6L I4 engine. Though this version of the engine delivers a little less torque than that it generates for the ST Hatchback, the power output is slightly more. Its 201 hp is maximum in the competition.

Hyundai Veloster Turbo R-Spec hits the 60 MPH in 6.8 seconds. The ride has an excellent ground clearance of 5.9 inches and an appreciable wheelbase of 104.3 inches. In terms of mileage, Veloster Turbo delivers 29 miles per gallon of gasoline.

Ford Fiesta ST VS Mazda 3 Touring 4dr

A 6-speed manual transmission mode is paired with a bigger 2.5L i4 engine in the Mazda 3 Touring 4dr. The ride has 184 horsepower and 185 lb.-ft. of torque to spare. Mazda 3 Touring has the slowest 0-60 MPH acceleration. It hits the 60 MPH in 7.9 seconds.

A likely reason for the poor performance delivered by the Mazda 3 Touring 4dr is its bulky build. In fact, the 3046 lbs. weighing car is heaviest among the class rivals. Redeeming features boasted by the Mazda 3 Touring 4dr includes a league-leading ground clearance of 6.1 inches.

2017 Ford Fiesta ST Hatchback Final Verdict

The Fiesta ST is one of the leading hotshots in the segment. The ride delivers an excellent performance along with an impressive combined fuel economy. Handling and steering are great too. The price-tag makes it one of the most pocket-friendly 5-door rides.

However, those looking to opt for the Hatchback must also know that it has a cramped rear seat. Furthermore, competitors offer far better trunk volume than the Fiesta ST Hatchback. If that’s ok then the ride is definitely a worthy option.
