The 2017 Ford Focus ST starts at a price tag of $24,775 with only one trim for choice. The Ford Focus represents a compact and practical four-door hatchback style. Ford has added a number of engine and suspension upgrades, which includes a turbocharged 2.0 liter four-cylinder engine that produces an evincing 252 horsepower to the road powered by a six-speed manual transmission. Since the real power can be unleashed only in manual transmission, Ford has dropped the idea of powering the hatchback with an automatic transmission and provides a manual transmission only.

  • 2.0L GTDI Engine 6-speed Manual Transmission
  • Unique ST Sport Suspension
  • Unique ST Logo Cloth Sport seats

The 2017 Ford Focus ST unfortunately comes only in one trim as an option. The major idea of introducing Ford Focus in 2017 is to stick the performance of the badge ST, which represents Sport Technologies. The 2017 Ford Focus ST only boasts a handful changes against its predecessor which includes Unique ST Sport Suspension, Unique ST Logo Cloth Recaro Sports seats (optional) and 2.0-liter turbocharged engine powered by six speed manual transmission only as a choice. The ‘Sport Technologies’ badging represents actual technology which soothingly makes a daily driver accept the smooth yet performance ride, quite more effectively than the driver would expect for. Intentionally, a hype worthy write-off for the ST badging is mandatory since the Ford Focus ST still remains “hot hatch” performance at its best.

We recommend

The 2017 Ford Focus ST is limited to only one choice when it comes to trims and features. If at all power, sporty looks and smooth ride quality at a cheaper price are your first check points while buying a hatchback, the 2017 Ford Focus ST is good to go with. On the other hand, the 2017 Ford Focus ST has not gone under major changes in and out, therefore you may have to settle down with same design and structure of the Focus as the earlier one.

2017 Ford Focus ST Hatchback Engine

"The 252-horsepower Focus ST is Ford’s VW GTI-killer, and it’s quite an impressive piece of work: fast, fun and comfortable."-kbb.com

Engine & Transmission

The combination of turbocharged 2.0-liter engine and six speed manual transmission is complemented by a sport-tuned suspension that makes a long stretch of road very easy and smooth to ride without harsh ride quality which generally in the case of such suspensions. The 2.0- liter turbocharged engine produces about 252hp along with 270 lb.-ft. of torque. With 252 hp of power, the Ford Focus ST remains highest in the number of power produced when compared to its rivals like Volkswagen Golf GTI and Mini Hardtop 2 Door JCW. With achieving highest number in terms of power, the Focus proves itself to provide great power at cheaper rate as compared to costly rivals.

Power 252 hp 210 hp 228 hp 306 hp
Torque 270 lb.-ft 258 lb.-ft 236 lb.-ft 295 lb.-ft

Ford Focus ST is the cheapest car and yet it offers great power as compared to some of its rivals. Only Civic Type R has better power output than the Focus but buying it will be a burden for your pocket.

Acceleration

Despite having great power of 252 hp, the Ford Focus ST fails to impress us with its acceleration when its rivals come into competition. The 2017 Ford Focus achieves 0-60 mph in 6.1 seconds, while most of its rivals achieve this mark in under 6 seconds. Yet, the difference in milliseconds to achieve 0-60 mph amongst all these hatchbacks remain considerable as they do not affect in day-to-day life.

Engine 2.0L 2.0L 2.0L 2.0L
Emission Tons/yr of CO2 Emissions @ 15K mi/year 7.1 6.3 6.8 7.1

The 2017 Ford Focus ST, however, achieves acceleration on a quarter-mile stretch in about 14.5 seconds, which is relatively a good number. The rivals like VW Golf, Mini 2 Door JCW, and Honda Civic Type R achieve it in 15.1 seconds, 14.2 seconds and 13.5 seconds, respectively. The Honda Civic Type R marks a great impression in terms of acceleration.

Handling and Steering

If there is one thing that creates excitement within, for the 2017 Ford Focus ST, is the ability of great handling and steering while not at all compromising overpower even at high speeds. The steering of Ford Focus ST remains stiff and responsive for the driver, during daily drives or during high-speed chasing. While the Ford Focus ST comes only in Front Wheel Drive option but never does it make the driver feel about lack of power and the response needed from the steering for that.

Braking

The 2017 Ford Focus ST has got some powerful discs to perform the braking duty. Despite being the heaviest of all amongst its competitors, the Ford Focus ST performs quite well when it comes to halting the hatchback and takes just 108 feet for the 60-0 MPH test.

60-0 MPH (ft.) 108 105 110 99

The Civic Type R stops the fastest from 60 MPH and takes only 99 feet to do so. Mini Hardtop fails to impress with its braking as the car takes 110 feet to stop even after being the lightest of the lot.

2017 Ford Focus ST Hatchback Fuel Economy

8.5/10

The Ford Focus ST is the sporty enhancement of the Ford Focus and hence, the fuel economy of ST is quite low. The sport hatchback delivers around 22 mpg in the city and 30 mpg on the highway, resulting in 25 mpg combined. The low fuel economy is due to the high performance and the extra weight that ST carries.

MPG (city) 22 24 23 22
MPG (highway) 30 34 32 28
MPG (combined) 25 28 26 25

Golf GTI is the most fuel-efficient car as it goes 24 miles on a single gallon of fuel in the city and 34 miles on the highway. Civic type R will burn a hole in your pocket with its low fuel-efficiency of 22 and 28 mpg on city and highway respectively.

2017 Ford Focus ST Hatchback Interior

"Inside, the 2017 Ford Focus ST boasts a handsome cabin. Both construction and materials quality are top-notch. The standard front"sport seats are both comfortable and supportive."-Edmunds

The 2017 Ford Focus ST is 4-door and 2 row hatchback that claims to seat 5 passengers, although for a much more comfortable ride, 4-passenger can cozily settle inside. The seats are well crafted providing a good amount of comfort to the passengers. An option of Recaro seats is also available which may compromise on comfort a bit as they are performance oriented.

Dimension & Weight

The 2017 Ford Focus ST, despite of undergoing not much of physical changes on the outside, has a much more impactful design along with well-defined compact nature of a hatchback. The Ford Focus ST is the heaviest of all amongst its rivals, thereby defining great sticking power to the road surface.

2017 Ford Focus ST Hatchback Safety

6.0/10

The 2017 Ford Focus ST doesn't compromise a bit when the matter is about hatchback needing safety features against great performance. The Focus ST brings out safety measures in almost every corner of the hatchback such as knee airbag on the driver side or Personal Safety System or AdvanceTrac with Electronic Stability Control. Some of the great safety features in and out are:

  • Dual Stage front airbags
  • Front seat side impact airbags
  • Safety Canopy System (Front and rear side curtain airbags)
  • Front safety belt reminder
  • Child Safety rear door locks
  • 2-Lower anchors and tether anchors for children (LATCH)
  • AdvanceTrac with Electronic Stability Control
  • Rearview camera
  • Tire pressure monitoring system
  • Personal Safety System
  • Three-point safety belt at all seating positions

In overall scenario, the 2017 Ford Focus ST feels promising towards providing great sports-power performance but with all such safety measures that boosts up the confidence of the driver as well as other passengers, when they go out for a crazy spin in it.

2017 Ford Focus ST Hatchback Competition

Ford Focus ST vs Volkswagen Golf GTI

The 2017 Ford Focus ST outshines the Volkswagen Golf GTI (S) in many factors such as power production and delivery, ride quality and comfort despite losing on factors like fuel economy and halting capacity. The Ford Focus could be a better choice than the Volkswagen Golf GTI (S) if factors like fuel economy and braking power are neglected

Ford Focus ST vs Mini Hardtop 2 Door JCW

Technically, the Mini Hardtop 2 Door JCW achieves the lowest marks in almost all the competitional categories against its rivals, therefore competing with the Focus ST is just another dream for it. For a good $30,900 amount, a person can settle down with the top-of-line optional package of the Ford Focus ST and thereafter celebrating a party with the left-out money.

Ford Focus ST vs Honda Civic Type R

The Honda Civic Type R remains the only strongest competitor to the Ford Focus ST. The Civic provides better power delivery, better acceleration, better performance, and better comfort but at a price of almost $10,000 extra over that of the Ford Focus ST. On the other hand, Ford Focus may slightly be better in terms of ride quality due to tuned suspensions.

2017 Ford Focus ST Hatchback Final Verdict

The 2017 Ford Focus ST is undoubtedly the best value for money sports hatchback providing over a lot of useful and unignorable features that may actually be counted and cannot be compromised on. These features may include best ride quality due to tuned suspensions, best performance and power output along with extreme top-notch comfort and infotainment on the inside. However, the hatchback may fall back in some cases against the Civic such as fuel economy, old design and structure, no new physical changes and so on. But a saving of almost $10,000 could be doubly advantageous with the choice inclining towards 2017 Ford Focus ST as it provides almost every best thing possibly expected in a sports hatchback which also maintains the criteria of strict and affordable budget.
