The Fusion Energi’s powertrain largely remains the same as present on the outgoing variant. The 2.0L I4 engine which makes use of the Atkinson cycle is paired with an electric motor that powers the front wheel. The continuously variable gearbox is appropriately paired to the engine due to smooth shifting nature.

For a starting price of $33,120, the Fusion Energi makes perfect sense for buyers who want a luxurious saloon while doing their bit for the environment. Although its fuel efficiency is bettered by the competitors.

Features

8.1/10

The 2018 Ford Fusion Energi is available in a total of three trims. The standard powertrain consists of a 2.0L I4 engine paired to a CVT gearbox which is also the only config available. All the power is delivered to the front wheels.

The base SE Energi sports a price tag of $33,120 and features such as dual-zone automatic temp. Control and voice-activated navigation make it a brilliant value for money option. Move further and the mid-table Energi Titanium variant for a premium of $1,000 over the base model comes up.

The list of standard features includes regenerative braking, audio system with 12 speakers, leather seating surfaces and much more. Then comes the top of the line Energi platinum variant which is a hefty $7,000 more expensive over the previous trim. It comes loaded to brim with creature comfort such as premium leather seating surface with front ventilated seats and much more.

We Recommend

The base SE variant still makes the most sense given the fact that it is the most value for money options on the trim line. Although the mid-table Titanium variant’s leather seats are something that you will sorely miss on the base variant but it does have all that one expects out of a regular driver while still saving on fuel due to a good fuel economy.

The Ford Fusion Energi plug-in hybrid has been a serious contender in the segment ever since it was launched back in 2013. In its 2018 iteration, the car adopts a more Ford looking exterior which is a delight to look at. The subtle updates on the present model make it easily one of the better-looking vehicles in the segment.

Engine

7.3/10

“The 2018 Ford Fusion Energi is a solid everyday car. It has good acceleration from a standstill for a plug-in hybrid, but it struggles to accelerate to highway speeds. It's made for comfort, and you'll float over dips and bumps in the pavement. However, you won't get an exciting drive out of this plug-in.”- cars.usnews

Engine and Transmission

The moving duty on the Ford Fusion Energi is done by a 2.0L I4 engine mated to an electric motor which makes it good for 141 hp and 129 lb-ft torque. The engine never even tries to be what it's not meant to be, that is being sporty. However, it provides sufficient power to lug the car around the city with relative ease.

In comparison, the different Hybrid S trim of the Fusion features the same powertrain as that on the Energi variant. The Chevy Volt and the Kia Niro FE both are some way off of the power figures on the Ford Fusion.

Acceleration

The acceleration on the Ford Fusion Energy is hampered by its sheer heft and a mammoth curb weight. The car builds pace in a leisurely fashion and never does its occupant feel that the car has attained a considerable amount of momentum.

Although the figures are yet to be announced officially but you can expect it to be similar to the Ford Fusion Hybrid S trim which sports a segment best 0-60 mph timings of 7.4 sec while being closely followed by the electric Chevy Volt at around 7.8 sec.

Ride and Handling

The Ford Fusion Energi is a car that is meant to make you feel comfortable rather than being a pace car. The suspension does a marvelous job of dealing with potholes and bad patches of road. The steering feedback does leave a lot more to be desired but the cornering ability is definitely up to the mark. This car is ideally suited for munching miles while keeping its occupant sucked in its opulence.

Braking

The Ford Fusion Energi, like all other trims, features an 11.8-inch rotor in the front and 11.9-inch rotor in the back. With a curb weight of 3968 lbs, the car builds up a substantial amount of momentum which does change sides rather abruptly while braking.

No official figures are available for Energi trim but the Hybrid trim completes a 60-0 mph halt in under 127 ft which makes it second to only the Chevy Volt which does the same in under 120 ft.

Fuel Economy

The Ford Fusion Energi carries around a hefty battery pack just to ensure that the car is sufficiently fuel efficient. A combined mileage of 42 mpg is certainly not the segment best but puts the car in a fighting position with the rivals.

The Kia Niro FE is th only car able to beat the Energi SE trim of Ford Fusion and it does by a considerable margin by returning a fuel economy of around 50 mpg.

“Good interior space and visibility, but the touch-sensitive controls and touchscreen are an annoyance. The Fusion Energi's battery leaves behind a small, oddly shaped trunk that's impractical for long trips, airport runs or shopping.”- edmunds

Seating and Comfort

The overall interior quality of the Ford Fusion Energi is something that will please all future owners. The car is easily one of the most opulent in the segment. The bright interior color scheme suits the car really well. The front seats feature ventilation and leather upholstery which ups the ante a little bit. Be it the front or the back, the legroom never disappoints even the taller passengers.

In comparison to the rivals, the Ford Fusion boasts of the roomiest front and rear seats with class-leading legroom of 44.3 inches and 38.3 inches respectively.

Infotainment System

The car features an 8-inch touch screen laden with the Sync 3 software as standard on all variants. The Sync 3 MMI is a breeze to operate with very little lag while changing menus. The screen and the touch sensitive buttons are susceptible to smudges which might be an issue but otherwise, it is one the better infotainment system in the segment.

Interior Features

The list of features on the 2018 Ford Fusion Energi includes -

  • Touch sensitive buttons
  • 8 inch touchscreen
  • Leather seats
  • Ventilated front seats
  • Steering mounted controls

Cargo Capacity

The batteries on the Ford Fusion Energi eat up a lot of space from boot which takes away much of the utility of the vehicle. A tiny 8.2 ft.cube cargo volume behind the 2nd seats puts it far behind most of its rivals.

The Kia Niro leads the segment in terms of boot space with a 19.0 ft.cube boot while the second position belongs to the Chevy Volt with its 10.6 ft.cube boot.

“Even after last year's updates, the Ford Fusion's styling bears a favorable resemblance to something Aston Martin might make. The Platinum models, with their extra chrome and unique wheels, look the part of a luxury sedan, while the Fusion Sport models get sporty fog lights, a mesh grille and charcoal-colored wheels.”- Kelley Blue Book

Dimensions and Weight

As the Energi variant is a plug-in hybrid vehicle, it has to carry around an extra battery pack which makes it the segment leader in term of curb weight which certainly not for the better. Length of 191.8 inches which is shared by the Hybrid S variant make them the segment’s lengthiest car in the segment. It also happens to be the widest car in the segment at 72.9 inches.

Kia Niro is the only vehicle which sports a better taller height than the Ford Fusion Energi at around 60.4 inches.

Competition

Ford Energi Sedan vs Ford Fusion Hybrid

Both the Energi and the Hybrid variants of the Ford Fusion are very similar except that the Hybrid trim is a gasoline-electric variant while the Energi is a plug in hybrid vehicle. There is price gap of around 6k between them but the Energi variant shouts to be heard with its extra features. The only compromise is the less boot space.

All the factors combined make the Energi a better car the than the Hybrid variant.

Ford Energi Sedan vs Chevy Volt

Unlike the the Ford Fusion Energi which is a plug in hybrid vehicle, the Chevy Volt is an all electric car. The Volt has interior that nowhere around the quality of the Ford Fusion. The Volt is also much less powerful and also less equipped than the Ford.

It's only benefit is that it is an all electric vehicle that will pollute the environment much less than any hybrid vehicle. Hence, if long range distance is not of utmost importance, the Chevy Volt can be considered for a 2nd look

Ford Energi Sedan vs Kia Niro

The Kia Niro is more of an extra large hatchback rather than a sedan. The body style does enable it to have a bigger boot storage but the legroom especially in the rear suffers. The interior quality too is no where near what Ford Fusion is offering.

All in all, the Kia can be considered as an option only if there are budget constraints. Otherwise, the Ford Fusion Energi is a better vehicle overall.

Final Verdict

Although the Energi and hybrid variants of the Ford Fusion might be hard to distinguish between from the first glance but they are two very different vehicles. Given the market position of plug-in hybrid vehicles, the Fusion Energi is placed very well in the segment. The boot space and lackluster driving dynamics might be a disappointment to some but folks who want to travel in class while saving the environment would not mind at all. The fuel efficiency is at par or better than what the rivals offer hence the Ford Fusion Energi demands the attention of buyers looking to buy a car in the segment.
