As you move up the trim levels you get additional features like 10-way power adjustable front seats with powered lumbar support, rain sensing windshield wipers, heated and cooled front seats and 12 speakers for excellent in ride entertainment.

We recommend.

For satisfying your daily driving needs, the base spec SE Luxury trim level is good enough. The base spec comes at a good price of $33120 and is pretty much a functional and a practical car. If you want your car to be loaded with features and want some advanced tech on board, the Platinum trim level is the car you should go for.

Engine

8.2/10
Under combined gas-electric power, the Ford Fusion Energi produces acceptable acceleration in daily driving. Highway passing maneuvers will require a bit of forethought at first, as speed builds more gradually here than what you may be used to, but in general the Energi zips around as capably as a conventional midsize sedan.

Engine and Transmission.

The engine that powers the Fusion Energi is a combustion engine paired with an electric motor. A 2-liter 4-cylinder Atkinson cycle engine makes about 144 hp and the electric motor makes about 118 hp. The unit as a whole delivers a combined output of 188 horses and 129 lb-ft of torque. It comes mated to a CVT transmission which sends power to the front wheels of the car.

The Ford Fusion Energi makes the lowest power figures in the competition while Honda Accord hybrid is the most powerful car of the lot making 212 hp. The Accord is followed by the Toyota Camry Hybrid that makes 200 horses.

Acceleration.

Hybrid cars aren’t famous for their acceleration figures but people like to know how the car performs. The Ford Fusion Energi can go from rest to 60 MPH in about 8.5 seconds which is pretty decent for a hybrid. It covers a quarter mile in 16.5 seconds which is a little slow.

The Honda Accord and the Toyota Camry happen to be the quickest cars in the competition in terms of 0-60 MPH acceleration. Moreover, Accord goes even quicker in the quarter mile test taking only 12.2 seconds to cover the distance.

Ride and Handling.

The Ford Fusion Energi does handle really well. Of course, you cannot expect it to have sports car like handling but on comparing it with its rivals, it is still one of the better handlers. Its steering is particularly responsive and one can wade through the traffic with ease in this car. The car also kind of sticks to the ground firmly thus enhancing its stability on the tarmac. Driving the 2017 Ford Fusion Energi can be fun but this isn’t really built for it. It is built for keeping the environment green and clean and so we rather suggest you to drive this car within its limits and not push it too hard. Let it be the humble daily commuter that it is.

Ride quality is also impressive. The ride is firm yet it isn’t harsh. You do experience body roll at times, particularly during high speed cornering but the seats do the job of holding you in place really well. The suspensions do absorb bumps and pot holes really well but again you certainly cannot expect a ride quality like some luxury cars offer. Braking.

The Ford Fusion Energi gets a regenerative braking system which converts all the heat energy that is lost during braking to electrical system and stores all of it in the battery thereby increasing the EV range of your car.

The Fusion Energi gets 11.8 inches diameter discs at the front while at the rear it gets 11.9 inches diameter discs. The brakes are really sharp, perform really well and only give you the confidence to do some spirited driving.

The Ford Fusion Energi does live up to the expectations of its potential buyer by offering a combined fuel economy of 42 MPG. In the city, the Fusion Energi can go for 43 miles on a gallon of fuel while on the highway it can go for 41 miles on a gallon of fuels.

Interior

7.5/10
"The 2017 Ford Fusion Energi seats five in two rows of comfortable, supportive seats. The front seats have a good amount of space, but the sloped rear roofline may pose a problem for taller passengers."- Cars.USnews

The interiors of the Ford Fusion Energi are quite decent. Everything inside the cabin is placed thoughtfully and positioned at the right place. Quality of materials used is good and the levels of fit and finish are also good. No cheap elements and there is no shaky equipment. The color combination on the inside makes the cabin feel roomy. The large windows at front and the rear too play an important role in this.

Seating and Comfort.

Ford claims that the Fusion Energi can accommodate 5 people. But in practice getting the 5 the passenger is in a little tedious task. The passenger in the middle sitting the second row will be a little bit tight on space.

However, it is still quite comfortable on the inside and is probably the best you can get at this price point and in this segment. 6-way power adjustable, heated front seats come as standard while you are offer 10-way power adjustable front seats as you move above the trim levels.

Infotainment System.

The Fusion Energi has been equipped with Ford’s SYNC 3 infotainment system which honestly speaking isn’t all that really great but is pretty decent for this segment. The system consists of an 8-inch colour capacitive touchscreen in the central stack. You also get AppLink, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay compatibility and 2 smart charging USB ports.

Additionally, you get premium audio system with 11-speaker as standard. You can further opt for a Sony audio system which comes with loads of other features like AM/FM radio, single CD player with MP3 compatibility, 12 speakers and HD radio technology.

Interior Features.

Some of the cool features offered on the inside of the 2017 Ford Fusion Energi are listed below.

  • 6-way power front passenger seat with fore/aft/up/down adjustment and power recline.
  • Heated front seats.
  • Premium audio system with 11 speakers.
  • Optional 10-way power front passenger seats including power lumbar.
  • Optional 12-speaker Sony audio system.

Cargo Volume.

The large battery occupies a large part of the trunk and eats up the cargo volume. There is only 8.2 cubic feet of cargo volume on offer with the Fusion Energi which is a bit too less for a car in this category. People obviously would expect the car to offer more trunk capacity since the Fusion Energi is a mid-sized sedan.

The Honda Accord has the largest trunk in the competition and offers cargo volume of 13.7 cubic feet. The Hyundai offers the second largest trunk of 13.3 cubic feet while the Toyota Camry stands third with a cargo capacity of 13.1 cubic.

"The grille, headlights, lower bumper and taillights on the 2017 Fusion have been reworked subtly, but effectively. It still looks like an Aston Martin, but that's no bad thing."

"Fusion Energi models use a lighted ring around the charge port, with a fully lit ring meaning charging's complete." - Kelley Blue Book

The Fusion Energi is a mid-sized sedan with rather proportionate dimensions. Its balanced dimensions give it a distinct look and a solid stance. Furthermore, the wider grille gives it a shark like front look and adds to its styling making it a handsome family sedan.

The Honda Accord is the longest car of the lot at 194.1 inches while the Hyudai Sonata is the widest car at 73.4 inches while on the other hand the Ford Fusion Energi is the tallest. At 3483 lbs the Honda Accord is the lightest car of the lot. Its longer wheelbase allows it to be more stable on the road even at high speed.

Competition

Hyundai Sonata Hybrid SE.

The Korean Sonata Hybrid SE makes 13 more horses than the Ford. It has also makes more torque, has the same fuel economy figures and also offers better trunk volume. Moreover, the Hyundai is priced less than the Ford at $26,000. All-in-all, the Sonata is the better car of the two. It is cheaper, it is more powerful and does most of the things better than the Ford.

Toyota Camry LE Hybrid.

The Toyota Camry is a legendary Japanese car that competes against the Ford Fusion Energi. The Camry makes more power, makes more torque, has the better acceleration and offers more trunk volume than the Ford. The Fusion Energi only has the slightly better fuel economy figures otherwise the Toyota outperforms the Ford on almost all the fronts. What’s more, the Toyota is also priced lower than the Ford at $26790. Clearly, the Camry is the better car of the two and if you ever have to choose between the two, you should certainly opt for the Camry.

Honda Accord Hybrid.

The Honda Accord is yet another legendary Japanese car that rivals the Ford Fusion Energi. It also outperforms the Ford Fusion in terms of power output, acceleration timings, braking stats and fuel efficiency numbers. The Accord can be yours at $29605 which is about $3000 less than the Ford.

Do we need to say anything else? It is pretty much obvious that the Honda Accord is the better car of the two and you should certainly go for the Honda Accord.

Final Verdict

The Ford Fusion Energi is a great car. No doubt about that. It makes good power, has good efficiency numbers, has good driving dynamics and also looks good. There’s nothing really that this car does wrong. It’s just that the negatives of the car start coming up when you compare it with other cars in the competition. The Ford Fusion Energi is the costliest car in the competition and doesn’t really have great performance figures which give its rivals an edge over it. If only it would have been priced a bit lower, it would have been a great proposition. But $33120 isn’t really worth for paying for this one given the fact that the Asian rivals of the Ford offer better performance and features than it does. If all you want is an American car should you buy the Ford Fusion Energi. Otherwise go for the other Asian cars in the category that offer more value for your money.
