Detailed Review

Many manufacturers are increasingly shifting focus towards electric driving and slowly phasing out gasoline. One point to note is that the market and industry for the same is still rising and though has left many impressed, that is still to reflect on the sales of these cars as compared to gasoline.

With the Ford Fusion Hybrid, the sedan offers a decent fuel economy and electric range, practicality and abundance of safety features. But the sedans slipping away and the rivals have begun dominating over many respects- starting with the aging design. As the manufacturer is slowly phasing out in favour of producing larger body sized vehicles, this may very well be the last Fusion we see.

The 2019 Ford Fusion Hybrid is born largely unchanged from the previous iteration. It is powered by the 2.0L inline-4 married to an electric motor that can range to around 600 miles. Kitted with a host of impressive safety tech and standard convenient features, the Hybrid sedan sees competition with the likes of Honda Accord Hybrid, Toyota Camry Hybrid, and its own Plug-in sibling the Ford Fusion Energi. Can the last likely Fusion triumph? Let’s see.

2019 Ford Fusion hybrid Sedan Features

8.3/10

The Fusion Hybrid comes in 3 different configurations and all three trims feature a standard 2.0L inline-4 engine mated to an electric motor. Unlike the previous iteration, Ford does not offer any optional packages except for a Sunroof on the base trims – S and SE.

All trims have abundant list of safety tech and convenient features, and come standard with a FWD option. Included standard on trims are SYNC 3 Infotainment system and Ford’s Co-pilot360 Protection Package which adds a host of safety packages.

2019 Ford Fusion hybrid Sedan Engine

“As expected, the Fusion Hybrid isn't speedy. But unlike other hybrids, the car feels admirably coordinated and willing when the road starts to turn and twist. It could be even better, but lifeless steering feel brings down our rating.” -edmunds

The sedan comes packed with a 2.0L inline-4 cylinders HYBRID engine paired to an electric motor to combine 188 horses and 129 pound feet of torque. Spurting 141 horses in itself by the engine, the combined motor and gas engine don’t feel too inspiring for a car this heavy. Punchy electric motor driving and lackluster engine performance still gets the job done for the Hybrid sedan to get you from one place to another or just casual cruising around city and highway. The motor however is weirdly smooth, and feels rapid off the line. You can drive it in either EV keeping in mind the charge under the battery, or normal mode.

Amongst the competition, the Honda Accord displays better performance and the highest amongst the competition, alongside the Toyota Camry and its Avalon counterpart. Like the Fusion Hybrid, its Energi has similar performance and the same powertrain under the hood.

Acceleration

It’s typical of a hybrid sedan to take their own pace in completing a drag test – thanks to their sluggish performance. For the Fusion Hybrid, the 0-60 completion is completed in 8.3s while 16.1 in the quarter to a mile strip. Its competitors take almost similar time, however the Accord demolishes the stereotype of a hybrid sedan’s acceleration pace while also doing the same in the field. The Volt has a laudable pace of finishing in 7.5s and the Energi takes similar time as its Hybrid counterpart.

Ride and Handling

The Ford Fusion has an excellent drivability as far as Hybrids go in its segment. Take it for a spin around curvy roads or just in the city, keeping you content with the way the sedan handles.

Speaking of the steering, however the feedback is mediocre and almost lifeless, giving you a feeling of being distant from the tarmac. But the ride quality redeems the sedan; comfortable, spirited and fun to drive. Its suspension easily absords bumps, and handling the sedan when cornering is effortless alongside minimal body roll. This is one sedan which in spite of a dull powertrain, it still gives sheer joy to drive.

Braking

Coming to a standstill in the Hybrid sedan from 60 mph takes about 123 feet, which is average for the size of the car. Pedal feedback is hit and miss, making it hard to stay consistent. It shares similar characteristics as its Energi sibling which takes a few feet longer at 129 feet – not much of a difference in real world. The rivals have similar performances but demonstrate a bit better figures at the same time.

2019 Ford Fusion hybrid Sedan Fuel Economy

Hybrid sedans have the advantage of slowly burning a hole in your pocket, rather than those fast paced gasoline cars. The Hybrid Titanium has a frugal powertrain and its thrifty fuel efficiency clearly showcases that but it comes across as subpar when compared to its rivals. Take a look at the Camry Hybrid and the Japanese sedan thrashes the field alongside the Honda Insight. Similar to the Hybrid Titanium is its PHEV Energi sibling, which also has a mediocre 26 miles range in pure battery driving.

2019 Ford Fusion hybrid Sedan Interior

8.0/10
“Almost everyone should find the Fusion's interior pleasant and accommodating. It's easy to get in and out of, the driving position is nicely adjustable, and the cabin offers a good amount of space. Tall passengers might take issue with the sloping rear roofline when getting into the back seat.” -edmunds

Inside the Ford Fusion, the interior is designed to seat 5 passengers with comfort and easy entry and exit. Its roomy cabin allows good legroom and headspace, of which the latter would disappoint if you are 6” tall and decided to sit in the rear seat – thanks to the sloping roofline of the sedan.

The interior has nice level of detailing with aplenty premium leather finish and feel around the cabin and dash, but it has begun to feel dated when compared to its rivals. Adjustable seats amplify comfort, and 60/40 foldable rear seats make sure you can squeeze in a bit more cargo.

The seats are stitched in leather upholstery and feel top quality and comfortable. Its cabin is isolated from the outside world with little to none humming resonation of the powertrain. Outward visibility is pretty good inspite of thick pillars in the windshield.

2019 Ford Fusion hybrid Sedan Exterior

“Some stars age well. Case in point: The 2019 Ford Fusion, which is just as eye-catching today as it was when it bowed in 2012.” -thecarconection”

Menacing Aston Martin-esque front fascia incorporates chrome mesh grille flanked by LED headlights and Auto high beams on either side and LED foglights underneath them. Hard lines claw downward the hood, met by the resting Ford insignia. To call it conservative would be an understatement, but to call it radical would be an overstatement. The Ford Fusion Hybrid is somewhere between the end of those two worlds.

Riding the 3700 pound heavy sedan are 18 inch wheels on all four sides. In mix of the aggressive angular package the design incorporates, the manufacturer has sculpted the sedan with dash of elegance along the curvaceous body found on either ends.

To keep out of any jazzy detail, body coloured door handles and mirror dismiss any contrast to the side profile. LED lights up the rear taillamps, atop which curling character lines ornament the cargo area and a single exhaust pipe fitted to the right. To garnish it with a bit sporty aesthetic, the manufacturer has added a spoiler on the rear of the Hybrid.

2019 Ford Fusion hybrid Sedan Safety

The Fusion comes with a host of safety features that make it one of the most attractive sedan among its rivals. While NHTSA and IIHS are yet to test the sedan, complemented by solid crash test records from its previous iteration, this year’s Fusion blended with the robust list of safety tech makes sure to continue the trend. Amongst the list of safety features standard in the Titanium Hybrid include –

  • Lane keeping assist
  • LATCH (lower anchor and tethers anchors for children) system

2019 Ford Fusion hybrid Sedan Competition

Ford Fusion Hybrid vs Honda Accord Hybrid

Amongst the two, the Accord Hybrid has better fuel efficiency along with superior plush seating and cargo space. However, it fails to catch up on the Fusion’s handling but has similarly comfortable ride and better powertrain. Pricing is lower than the Fusion but move up the trims and you’d find features not included even on the Fusion. The Accord is just the better car to own.

Ford Fusion Hybrid vs Toyota Camry Hybrid

The Toyota Camry and Ford Fusion have many similarities, including storage, user-friendly infotainment system, and a smooth ride. But while the Camry is more powerful under the hood and has better performance than the Fusion, the latter drives more spiritedly and can cater to the enthusiast. Overall, the Camry is the better car to buy.

Ford Fusion vs Ford Fusion Energi

The Ford siblings have pretty much the same in every aspect of the sedan, but only differ under one principal – while the Hybrid comes with a gasoline and electric motor, the Energi is a Plug-in Hybrid which can be charged plugged in to give a greater EV range. Of course that would mean the PHEV is a better sedan but in real world, the minimal distance it covers under all-electric driving and its price available only in one trim has the Hybrid winning the round here. Equip the Hybrid with similar packages and it will still cost cheaper than the Energi and quite frankly, worth it.

2019 Ford Fusion hybrid Sedan Final Verdict

Go Green! You read that right; in the world today, with all those pollution talks and what nots about global warming, we really need to start utilizing the alternatives and that’s where the automotive industry is headed.

With the Ford Fusion Hybrid, the manufacturer has gotten many aspects right but there of course like any creation, the sedan also has its own flaws – those that can be overlooked thankfully but still are smartly averted in the rivals. Buy the Fusion if you want to own one of Ford’s sedans before they go all SUVs, crossovers and etc. But one more reason to buy the Fusion – because it’s a really good car!
