Overview

The good-looking sedan is back this year with no change. Any guess about who we are talking about? Yes, we are talking about the unbeaten sedan, the 2018 Ford Fusion. The Fusion arrived with a refreshed look in 2017 and now it has been carried over to the 2018 model. The Fusion sedan slots above the subcompact Ford Fiesta and Compact Focus sedans.

The present Fusion 2018 model features a base 2.5-liter Duratec I-4, with more engine options like a turbocharged 1.5-liter EcoBoost I-4, a turbocharged 2.0-liter EcoBoost I-4, and the Sport model's twin-turbo 2.7-liter EcoBoost V-6 engine. In the midsize sedan segment, the 2018 Ford Fusion competes with prominent cars like Toyota Camry, Kia Optima, and Hyundai Sonata.

2018 Fusion is also available as hybrid trims, namely, a hybrid and a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) that combines a 2.0-liter Atkinson-Cycle I-4 with an electric motor along with an E-CVT. Every Fusion now comes integrated with Bluetooth audio streaming and a rearview camera. The Fusion SE comes fitted with the optional forward-collision warning system and adaptive cruise control.

Recently, Ford has come up with the 2018 Ford Fusion Hybrid and the car is the real deal from the company.

Starting at a price of $25,390, The ford fusion hybrid is a gasoline-electric hybrid version of the popular sedan, Ford Fusion. Ford launched its first Fusion hybrid in 2013. Currently, second generation fusion hybrids are wending. Ford launched its Fusion Hybrid in four trims named as Hybrid S, Hybrid SE, Hybrid Titanium, and Hybrid Platinum.Ford Fusion Hybrid is a popular car in the Hybrid segment as it offers impressive interiors, better mileage, and excellent infotainment system. The hybrid sedan is providing a tough competition to other hybrids cars in the segment. 6.7/10

"As expected, the Fusion Hybrid isn't speedy. But unlike other hybrids, the car feels admirably coordinated and willing when the road starts to turn and twist."-Edmunds

Engine and Transmission

Ford Fusion Hybrid is equipped with a 2.0L iVCT Atkinson Cycle I-4 Hybrid engine which reflects below average results on the paper. When it comes to torque and power count of 129 lb-ft and 188 hp respectively. The Fusion Hybrid S feels a bit low powered when it comes to other sedans in the segment. The driving experience was not at all powerful. The car struggles in producing good amount of torque and acceleration. The acceleration offered in Ford Fusion Hybrid is CVT Automatic.

Models Ford Fusion Hybrid S Honda Accord LX Hybrid Chevrolet Malibu Hybrid Toyota Camry LE Hybrid
MSRP $25,390 $23,570 $28,795 $27,800

Power 188 hp 212 hp 124 hp 208 hp
Torque 129 lb.-ft 129 lb.-ft 129 lb.-ft 163 lb.-ft

Except Toyota Camry LE Hybrid, other Hybrids in the segment are offering almost same amount of the power and torque. Toyota Camry LE Hybrid is boosted with a powerful 2.5L I-4 DOHC Hybrid engine which is one of the most powerful engines available in the segment. Though the engine is low-powered in Ford Fusion Hybrid S, the only thing that we like about the engine is its calmness. The engine produces a very low sound even when you rev it at its extreme making the cabin quiet place to be in.

Acceleration

Ford Fusion Hybrid S lacks in acceleration. It takes about 7.4 seconds in attaining a speed of 60 MPH from 0 MPH which is just average. The Fusion Hybrid takes 12.9 seconds in covering a quarter mile of distance. Other Hybrid cars in the segment show approximately same results when it comes to acceleration.

Engine 2.0L 2.0L 1.8L 2.5L
Emission (Tons/yr of CO2 Emissions @ 15K mi/year) 4.2 3.8 3.8 3.4

Honda Accord Hybrid and Toyota Camry Hybrid are the fastest to reach 60 MPH but Camry falls back when it comes to quarter-mile run. Malibu is the worst car in this comparison as it takes 8.4 seconds for the 0-60 MPH run. Hybrids are known for low CO2 emission; The Ford Fusion Hybrid S produces an emission of 4.2 tons of CO2 per 15K miles which is considerably lower than another non-hybrid sedan in the price segment. But when compared with other hybrids in the segment, Ford Fusion Hybrid S is a bit less eco-friendly. Other hybrid cars like Toyota Camry LE Hybrid offer CO2 emission of less than four tons per 15k miles.

Ride and Handling

The riding experience was smooth and convenient on city roads, but the car struggles on uneven roads and highways. You have to push the acceleration paddle more usually on highways as the acceleration isn't powerful. The handling experience was convenient, and steering was light. The overall riding experience was smooth and confident. We like comfortable seats, noise free ambience, and feature rich infotainment system offered by Ford Fusion Hybrid S. But the only complaint that we had from Fusion Hybrid S is the braking and acceleration pedals. You need to press them with a bit higher pressure than usual.

Braking

Ford Fusion S isn't equipped with a powerful braking system. Like other hybrid sedans in the segment, it comes with an average braking system which offers just average performance. The car slides about 127 ft. while decelerating from 60 MPH to still which is a bit lower than the average. We also find the braking pedals a bit more demanding, as you need to press them a bit harder than usual.

The Ford Fusion Hybrid stands at 3472 pounds and offers front and rear pedals of 11.8 and 11.9 inches respectively. The competitors, like Honda Accord LX Hybrid, are equipped with slightly more powerful braking systems at least on paper, but the real life braking performance of these Hybrids are more or less similar.

Fuel Economy

9.0/10

Hybrids are known for their fuel-efficient nature. The Ford Fusion Hybrid S is no different from other hybrids. It is a fuel-efficient car by nature. Fusion S shows an average of 43 MPG on city roads and 41 MPG on highways which is acceptable considering the Hybrid nature of the car.

MPG (City) 43 47 49 51
MPG (Highway) 41 47 43 53
MPG (Combined) 42 47 46 52

The combined fuel economy comes at 42 MPG which is significantly lower than the competitors, as other hybrids like Honda Accord LX Hybrid, Chevrolet Malibu Hybrid, and Toyota Camry LE Hybrid offer better fuel economy of 47, 46, and 52 respectively. The fuel economy offered by Toyota Camry LE Hybrid is commendable and best in class.

Interior

7.5/10

"The mostly plastic interior at least appeared to be carefully assembled, with consistent fits. The distance between the driver, dash, and the low shifter was slightly awkward, but not inconveniently so" -CarandDriver.com

Seating & Comfort

The Ford Fusion Hybrid S offers same interior styling as other ford fusion models. The interiors seem more premium than what we have expected form this Hybrid sedan. Sitting was comfortable and spacious. There were front glass holders as well as back glass holders on the board. The dashboard is more functional than the previous models. The physical buttons were replaced with capacitive touch screen button which feels a bit more premium. The front passengers space is improved from previous models. Overall interiors were well crafted and comfortable.

The Hybrid sedan offers a standard five-passenger seating. The seating was comfortable enough as the passenger volume amounts at 102.8 ft. cube. There is no doubt that Ford Fusion Hybrid S offers one of the best interiors in the segment. The car has an edge over the competitors in the interiors segment.

Infotainment System

The standard S and SE variants offer a standard Ford infotainment system which is well equipped and convenient while the upper variants are equipped with the latest Sync3 infotainment system which offers a more interactive experience. Android Auto integration and Apple CarPlay are a welcome addition in the 2018 model of the Ford Fusion Hybrid S, which is standard in all versions. The experience was more convenient and advanced. The sound output in the upper variants was really exciting because of Sony Audio System with 12 Speakers and HD Radio.

Cargo Volume

The Ford Fusion Hybrid S has a cargo capacity of 12.0 cubic feet. The competitors are offering better boot spaces when compared with Ford Fusion Hybrid S. The boot isn't convenient in the Fusion S as the battery is also placed in the luggage box. Due to the presena ce of battery, the luggage box is uneven from inside which makes it difficult to put high volume luggage bags in the Ford Fusion Hybrid S.

Model Ford Fusion Hybrid S Honda Accord LX Hybrid Chevrolet Malibu Hybrid Toyota Camry LE Hybrid
Volume (ft cube) 12.0 16.7 11.6 15.1

While the competitors like Honda Accord LX Hybrid are offering better and convenient boot capacities, the ford fusion hybrid doesn't offer the same convenience though it depends more upon the user needs and family size.

Exterior

6.7/10

"It looks great, too. That rear spoiler and diffuser sharpen up a back end that can look a bit dumpy on the standard models, and the overall appearance is appropriately blistered and aggressive-looking without erring too close to a baseball-cap and tracksuit" -Motor1.com

Dimension & Weight

The 2018 version of Ford Fusion Hybrid S offers the same exterior configurations as previous generation of Fusion Hybrid. The exteriors are handsome enough for the segment. The overall design seems stylish and sporty. The new additions like more wider grills and new LED headlights are welcome. The Fusion Hybrid S has its own design language which is sturdy as well as good-looking.

The overall Ford Fusion Hybrid S offers dimensions of 191.8, 72.9, and 58 inches in Length, Width, and Height respectively. The Ford Fusion Hybrid S offers an impressive ground clearance of 6.2 inches which is best in the segment. The overall suspension offered by Ford Fusion Hybrid S is smooth enough which makes riding comfortable and convenient.

Ford Fusion Hybrid S is well equipped with all major safety features including ABS (Anti-lock Braking System), EBD (Electronic Brake-force Distribution), Blind spot monitor (BSM), and VPMS (Vehicle Proximity Notification System).
