Ford has recently started to manufacture highly fuel-efficient cars that offer decent power. Having said that, the American automaker continues to sell some of its high-performance vehicles like the amazing Mustang series along with an iconic coupe that created a worldwide reputation. Winning the 24-hours of Le Mans four times consecutively was the Ford GT40, a racing legend that was initially a British-built car and is still sold to this day.

Expert Review, Pricing Analysis and Buying Guide

Years later, when Ford had finally established itself across the globe, it decided to celebrate this success by launching a bigger, road-legal, and occupant-friendly version of the GT40 to simply name it the Ford GT, revealing the first generation of this smooth operator in 2005.The 2020 Ford GT is the second generation that was introduced in the 2015 North American international auto show. With some crushing power and blazing performance, the mid-engined coupe has been mostly the same after its launch. Looking at the current market, it competes with the McLaren GT, Lamborghini Huracan Evo, and Ferrari 488 Pista.

2020 Ford GT Features

The new Ford GT is a coupe that has nothing much to do with the features to be offered, there are plenty of other options in the same make if one needs them. This rear mid-engined coupe is a specialized and track-focused sports car which is the reason why this American automaker does not offer any specific trims and makes it a sole lineup. The Ford GT gets some superior and occult features like the Active Air Suspension along with Active Rear Spoiler to be a handling demon. The 20-inch one-piece forged aluminum wheels on the outside and Alcantara interior accent on the inside make up for craving.

The richness continues with the Ford Sync 3 and additional packages like the Driver’s Assistance Package. In addition to these, it gets a carbon fiber trimming option to be adorned with. A diffuser at the rear has been carved for better airflow that will ensure maximum downforce and reductive lifting phenomenon at the belly. The vents in the front are bi-functional as it helps in channeling the aerodynamics while giving it an artistic expression. The Ford GT has top-class grip down the lane at maximum speed on the hard corners.

Which Trim should you buy?

As there is no specific variation available for the Ford GT but it has been a host of multiple upgrades that are worth giving a shot. It has that pivotal nature that can balance the power delivery and the control with ease. Further adding to that are the active and adaptive extensions that not just aid in stability but communicate the proper feedback as well to bring about the changes in the input from one’s end if any. A class apart interior ambiance with exemplary performance and appealing outfit makes it a must buy but the price is a little too much to afford. Therefore, it is completely a matter of choice to own the “dawn”.

2020 Ford GT Engine and Performance

Ford has equipped many of its high-performance vehicles with some insane engines, but recently, it has moved over to making automobiles more sustainable and eco-friendly. Powering sporty cars like these could have been a major challenge if the brilliant in-house engineers were lazy and procrastinated to create an efficient-performance engine. The 2020 Ford GT is powered by a 3.5L EcoBoost V6 which generates 647 HP of power and 550 lb-ft of torque.

This engine is amongst one of the finest made by the Michigan-based brand, in fact, it is picked from the popular F-150 lineup, powering the Raptor. This raw madness of power is sifted by a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission and is sent to the ground via the rear wheels. All this put together makes the 2020 Ford GT accelerate from 0 to 60 MPH in just 3 seconds and gives a top speed of 216 MPH, which is hilariously fast. Moreover, this two-door sports car completes a standing quarter-mile in about 11 seconds.

The Ford GT has the best top speed of all and stands the second-best performer when put up with all other V8 and V10s. The McLaren GT and Lambo Huracan are way cheaper and have nearly the same power but not as much torque as the American counterpart. Clearly, the Ferrari 488 Pista takes the spot with the best performance and engine specs but it has an engine of the same size as that of the McLaren’s 4.0L. The GT has been a performer and it has a competitive testament and history to its name, which makes its price soaring like anything.

How does the 2020 Ford GT ride and handle?

The new Ford GT is basically a carbon-fiber tub surrounded by an aluminum alloy subframe and is incredibly light. The upcoming model is equipped with independent multi-link arms on all four wheels that are supported by an adaptive air suspension making it a decently smooth sportscar over small irregularities, however, hard and sudden impacts are not fully dampened.

The American-crafter coupe uses the same mechanism as any other car in the market but has a hydraulically actuated power steering, a smoother and more accurate method of steering actuation which is all that is needed in this half-a-million-dollar race car. The 2020 Ford GT has a 40-feet turning circle diameter which is quite enough for its wheelbase.

2020 Ford GT Braking Performance

With all of that mighty power always pushing the mid-engined coupe to its fullest, there should be an equally brilliant braking system to bring things back under control. To do this, Ford has partnered with Brembo and installed a specialized and advanced braking system to make the GT a road-legal model. This makes the sports-coupe stop from 70 MPH to a standstill in just 145 feet.

The 3,000-lb sportscar is installed with huge carbon-ceramic disc brakes with the front rotors measuring 15.5-inches while the rear wheels have 14.1-inch rotors each. These furiously rotating discs are slammed upon by the 6-piston aluminum calipers in the front while the work at the rear is done by a pair of 4-piston calipers.

The McLaren and Lamborghini weigh almost 300-lb more which narrates their slower performance. Both of these cars are equipped with smaller brake rotors, however, Ford and Ferrari have opted for much larger ones. The 488 Pista has a devilish bite at its rotors as well that brings the beast within a periphery of 96.7 ft of braking travel. Therefore, in the end, the braking prowess altogether also justifies the hyped price of the Ford GT.

2020 Ford GT Fuel Economy

Powered by the 3.5L EcoBoost, to have hopes of higher fuel efficiency on the new Ford GT is completely normal. The second generation of the GT gets better mileage as the 2020 Ford GT goes 12 miles on a gallon in the city while on the highway it is 18 MPG. Moreover, the fuel tank capacity in this mid-engined sports car is 15.2 gallons which makes it capable of covering 290 miles of extreme sportiness. The American manufacturer has chosen a rather unconventional spot for the fuel filler which is above one of the cooling vents.

Range (City/Highway/Combined; Miles)

With the best MPG and one of the biggest fuel tanks, Mclaren is the most practical choice. The Ferrari is not way behind and can be given a preference over the former for its midway approach in its economy and power performance curve. But if one will give it a thought, spending more than $500,000 will hardly make the owner think about spending a bit more irrespective of finance with the Ford GT. Therefore, this is hardly a concern in this segment but what’s wrong with getting that extra so-called saving.

2020 Ford GT Interior

As said before, the GT is made to perform with its track-focused build approach and not to impress with beautiful interiors like most other cars in the class. Having said that, the Ford GT has a fantastic interior with the cabin fully covered in Alcantara with dark metal inserts. On the flip side, the coupe has poor cargo capacity which hardly impacts the image.

Starting with the dashboard design which looks modern and carries the aggressive styling on the inside. There are limited buttons altogether and AC vents are only spotted on the doors and nowhere on the dashboard. The steering wheel is extraordinary as wrapped in more of that Alcantara and looks really awesome with those metal-finished paddle shifters. Moreover, the two seats are made out of carbon fiber which reduces weight furthermore and is wrapped in Alcantara with ribbed Aunde Canelado cloth inserts and GT-embossed head restraints.

Cargo Capacity (cubic feet)

Now there is no real competitor here because the Ford GT is the only car with known dimensions, although it has the least cargo space of all. The McLaren GT can fit in quite a lot of stuff for a class like this whereas the other two have also hardly given any consideration in this department. The driver posturing in all of these is quite a low-leaning one that’s because of the sloping roofline. The lower height tends to take up the comfort dimension a bit out of the scope. Some of the features are:

  • GT-embossed head restraints
  •  Aunde Canelado cloth inserts
  • Alcantara Trims
  • Suede-wrapped dashboard

How intuitive is the 2020 Ford GT’s infotainment unit?

The 2020 Ford GT is equipped with a compact infotainment unit. The popular SYNC infotainment system is standard on the GT with a small touchscreen display that has smooth and highly responsive touch, very easy to operate. A simple center infotainment display means no crazy graphics, unlike the driver information unit which is also a fully digital screen.

Ahead of the steering column, the bright and colorful display has good visibility and is customized to match different drive modes, bringing revs and gears more into focus for their performance modes. It gets the Navigation unit along with the voice recognition gesture controls as well. Some of the highlights of the infotainment system are as follows:

  • Android Auto compatible
  • HD Radio
  • Navigation with voice control
  • 4G WiFi hotspot
  • Bluetooth audio streaming and hands-free phone
  • Valet mode

2020 Ford GT Exterior

Now, this is what the car is all about, the holiest exterior design ever made by Ford is the GT. The first generation was all about power and weight balance but soon after 2016, Ford came up with a tear-drop-shaped styling which became one of the most technically strong and efficient ones. The 2020 Ford GT is not much different and has a drag coefficient of 0.388 which is an insane number.

On the front are aggressive-looking full-LED projector headlights with DRLs and GT-badging inside the housing. The front bumper has a fully functional vent that runs all the way up to the hood, gluing the front end to the ground. Moving over to the side, the cabin area is smoothly curved out whereas there are strong character lines all over the side along with 20-inch black-out wheels and the marvelously styled scissor doors put together are a breath-taking view to look at.

Besides this, the Ford GT has an active rear spoiler that pops out all by itself, based upon the speed and another beautiful sight is the rounded dual chrome-tipped exhausts. As per data, the Ford GT is the longest and lowest of all. This gives a streamlined airflow and a top-notch lower center of gravity which are a must for this segment. The ground clearance has been kept considerably low to assist other dimension parameters. The others also somewhat follow the same curvature that amplifies their aspect ratio. The highlights of this section are:

  • Dual Chrome-tipped Exhausts
  • Active Rear Spoiler
  • GT-badging
  • 20-inch Black-out Wheels

2020 Ford GT Safety

To start with, carbon fiber and aluminum are two materials that are mostly used to make this two-door coupe. Ford has constructed the GT’s structure out of a carbon-fiber tub which is supported by aluminum subframes and a steel roll cage which makes it lighter and stronger. Now, because of such a high price, there are no NHTSA or IIHS results available for the 2020 Ford GT to prove its safety. Being a Ford, the GT is equipped with fully automatic headlights and cruise control and a couple of safety features as well.

In addition to this, the American manufacturer has also provided a racing harness provision to ensure maximum safety for all those amazing track days. Other than this, the area above the passenger seat is also said to be a strong structural point. Along with that one has been entitled to have a Driver’s Assistance Package which further reinforces the overall safety handling. Some of the features are:

  • Cruise Control
  • Active Park Assist
  • Automated Emergency Braking
  • Blind-Spot Monitor

2020 Ford GT Competition

2020 Ford GT vs 2020 McLaren GT

Now both might be named as grand tourers, but it is McLaren that seems to add a few grand touring features like loads of cargo space along with good performance and a curvy design. On the other hand, Ford has gone completely the opposite way and made a high-performance that is built to break records. While both the cars are highly attractive to look at, Ford has a more functional and character-specific exterior styling. The McLaren is more compact and fuel-efficient than the Ford, however, it is not as fast as the American-made two-door coupe.

2020 Ford GT vs 2020 Lamborghini Huracan EVO

From making cars that are popular for their efficiency to closely competing with some iconic Italian supercar brands, Ford has been everywhere. Lamborghini’s Huracan Evo is a marvelous high-performance product that is the most affordable one in the current market. It has one of the most aggressively styled exteriors.

The Ford GT and Lamborghini’s Huracan have plenty of similarities like both of them are track-focused cars with almost equal acceleration times, MPG figures, and a few features as well. The price becomes a concern in the Ford GT and that is where the Lambo may edge it out.

2020 Ford GT vs 2020 Ferrari 488 Pista

The battle between Ford and Ferrari has not yet ended as both have proved their worth. Ferrari has been more consistent than the American brand and the 488 Pista is a great example. Priced half of the Ford GT, the 488 Pista performs better than the American coupe, be it acceleration times, fuel efficiency, or braking performance. On the other hand, Ford’s GT is longer, wider, and closer to the ground just how a true sports car should be. Thus the price tag takes a toll on the choice altogether.

2020 Ford GT Final Verdict

Nothing seems to be cooler or more possible than transforming a 40-year old iconic supercar that was built to contest in an endurance race and made America proud by bringing back-to-back wins. Ford did a fantastic job by reviving the GT and making it a road-legal vehicle. The new Ford GT is a modern-day high-performance beast that will make everyone at the track filled with fear down their spine of its mighty speed and lightning-fast lap times.
