Expert Review, Pricing Analysis and Buying Guide

Since the 2022 Mustang Convertible is expected to be a carryover model, it is expected to carryover the 2.3L turbocharged inline-4 engine that will be paired to a 6-speed manual, the 10-speed automatic is also expected to be carried forward. RWD is the standard drivetrain and it will come with a mechanically operated soft-top roof.

There are no changes expected on the interior and exterior as it is a carryover model, as the updates and upgrades would be reserved for the new model. The 2022 Mustang will continue with the two trim offerings and prices are expected to start at approximately $33,000. The 2022 Ford Mustang will come into direct competition with Chevrolet Camaro Convertible, BMW 2-Series Convertible, and Mazda MX-5 Miata.

2022 Ford Mustang Convertible Features

The 2022 Ford Mustang Convertible is expected to be available in the same two trim lines available for the 2021 model year - EcoBoost Convertible and the EcoBoost Premium Convertible. The differences are all in the feature set and the Premium trim gets a lot more for the extra price paid.

Both trims will feature the same 2.3 L turbocharged 4-cylinder engine and an RWD drivetrain. Ford offers many options to choose from including packages and accessories that will get you a Mustang Convertible to have the features you like. Some of the prominent features expected in the trims are listed below:

2022 Ford Mustang Convertible Engine and Performance

As we expect there to be no changes, the 2022 Ford Mustang Convertible will see the same 2.3L turbocharged unit producing 310 hp and 350 lb-ft, which also powered the 2021 model. If you are not content with the power output, you can opt for the High-Performance package which increases the power output of the engine to 332 hp along with adding a few upgrades.

Power is transferred to the rear wheels of the car via a 6-speed manual transmission that comes as standard, while a 10-speed automatic is also available as an option. The handling of the Convertible Mustang is average but can be upgraded with the aforementioned High-performance package which includes a limited-slip rear axle and heavy-duty front springs for a more sporty feel.

2022 Ford Mustang Convertible In Acceleration Mode

In terms of performance, the 2022 Ford Mustang Convertible will do the 0-60 sprint in 5.6-seconds and the standing quarter-mile in 14.1-seconds, which is fairly decent but is slower than the Chevrolet Camaro convertible and the BMW 2 Series convertible. It will achieve a top speed of 155 mph.

2022 Ford Mustang Convertible Fuel Economy

The 2022 Ford Mustang Convertible will continue to offer the same fuel economy figures as the 2021 model - 20 mpg in the city, 27 mpg on the highway, and a combined 23 mpg. When equipped with the optional 10-speed automatic increases the EPA estimated fuel economy on the highway by 1 mpg to give 28 mpg.

The 2022 Mustang Convertible will come equipped with a 15.5-gallon fuel tank which will allow it to offer a combined range of 356 miles. However, the competition comes with better MPG figures, allowing them to have a better driving range, except the Mazda MX-5 Miata which comes with a much smaller fuel tank, but is not far off in driving range.

2022 Ford Mustang Convertible Interior

There are no changes to the interior of the 2022 Ford Mustang as it is a carryover model. The interior can seat 4 occupants in the 2+2 seating configuration, but the rear seats might feel a bit cramped. On the base EcoBoost trim, the seats are manually adjustable with cloth upholstery and automatic air conditioning. A 6-way power driver seat and dual-zone automatic air conditioning are available.

2022 Ford Mustang Convertible Front Seats

The EcoBoost Premium trim comes with ActiveX upholstery, heated and cooled 6-way power-adjustable driver's seat and heated and cooled 4-way power-adjustable front passenger's seats, and dual-zone automatic climate control. Options on this trim include leather upholstery and carbon-fiber interior trim. The Mustang Convertible comes with a cargo space of 11.4 cu.ft, 2.1-cu.ft. less than the Mustang fastback.

The Ford Mustang offers the most legroom in the front row, but the BMW does offer more legroom in the back row and also in trunk space. The Miata does offer decent space, but can only seat two and has a really small trunk. When we come to infotainment, we expect no changes. The base will come with a 4.2-inch screen running the SYNC system with the basics.

2022 Ford Mustang Convertible Infotainment System

The higher EcoBoost Premium trim comes with an 8-inch unit running the SYNC 3 system. Rumors have been going around over the SYNC 4 system, which features on the new Bronco models, but we expect that to come on the 2023 Mustang model. Some of the 8-inch infotainment unit's features are:

  • AM/FM Radio
  • WiFi hotspot
  • Bluetooth connectivity
  • 2 USB Ports with smart charging
  • SiriusXM satellite radio (only on the EcoBoost Premium trim)
  • Available voice-operated navigation system
  • 6-speaker sound system (base), 9-speaker sound system (premium), and available 12-speaker B&O sound system.

2022 Ford Mustang Convertible Exterior

Since the Mustang is expecting a generation upgrade for its 2023 model, we expected no changes to the exterior of the 2022 model. The exterior of the Mustang features projection lights along with the DRLs and the LED sequential taillights, a hood with functional dual vents for hot air from the engine to escape.

2022 Ford Mustang Convertible

The side features the same profile as the coupe without the roof and the c-pillars and the rear features sequential taillights and dual-exhaust outlets. 17-inch wheels are standard while the Premium trim comes with 18-inch wheels. The High-Performance package adds raised blade deck-lid spoiler, along with a rear diffuser and 19-inch wheels.

In terms of exterior dimensions, the Ford Mustang measuring 188.9-inches in length and 75.4-inches in width. Chevrolet Camaro is of similar dimensions to the Ford Mustang but comes with the longest wheelbase measuring 110.7-inches. The BMW 2-series is 14-inches shorter in length than the Ford Mustang. However, the Mazda MX-5 has the smallest dimensions in all criteria.

2022 Ford Mustang Convertible Safety

The 2022 Ford Mustang Convertible has not yet completed NHTSA crash-testing, in the rollover tested (completed), it has a 5-star safety rating, which is good for a convertible with a soft-top. The Mustang Fastback has overall 5-star safety rating. The IIHS has not yet tested the 2022 Mustang but has tested the 2021 model, which has an overall "good" safety rating.

The 2022 Ford Mustang will continue to come with the same safety features as the 2021 model. These include a 6-airbag system (driver's side knee airbag included), an individual tire pressure monitoring system, and an SOS Post-crash safety system. Traction control, ABS, Stability control are all standard. There is the option of the Safe and Smart Package which pre-collision assist, automatic emergency braking, automatic high beams, adaptive cruise control, and lane-keeping alert.

2022 Ford Mustang Convertible Final Verdict

The 2022 Ford Mustang Convertible is expected to reach dealerships in Late 2021 i.e. fourth quarter of the year. The 2022 Mustang Convertible is a carryover model with minimal to no changes, as there have been speculations for a new generation of Mustang beginning with the 2023 model year, so the possible upgrades will be kept for the new generation.

With the 2022 Ford Mustang convertible being a complete carryover model with minimal changes or no changes, we do not recommend getting the 2022 Mustang Convertible, we would recommend getting a used 2020 or 2021 model year Mustang Convertible with low mileage as you will get it for a much lower rate than a new one.
