Detailed Review

The classic American pony car has been around for more than 50 years. The father of the pony car segment in its modern avatar promises a good dose of speed and styling while adhering to a budget. The Mustang has evolved from its barebones to provide comfort and elegance that matches up to many European counterparts.

The Mustang Coupe is offered with loads of choices and it easier for you to choose a car that suits you better. The Stang is offered with 3 engine choices. It can be had with a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic with paddle shifters. The 2017 Mustang is a part of the sixth generation. In 2015, Mustang underwent a major refresh and since then the recipe for the Mustang has changed. Mustangs have historically used Solid Rear Axle but this generation uses an Independent Rear Suspension. This little tweak has changed the Mustang forever.

2017 Ford Mustang Features

8.3/10

The Mustang is offered in 5 trim levels. The base trim is powered by a V6 engine. The mid-spec 2dr and premium 2dr coupe share an efficient but powerful turbocharged EcoBoost engine. The top GT trims are powered by V8 fuel guzzlers.

Even the base V6 trim comes packed with the latest technological amenities. The Mustang V6 2dr trim is offered with keyless ignition and entry, a limited-slip rear differential, a rearview camera, and sync voice control system. The EcoBoost trim takes creature comforts to a higher level with 6-way power passenger seat and active noise cancellation.

The GT Premium trim is the icing on the cake, it takes all the comforts from the EcoBoost Premium trim and plonks it around an incredible V8 engine. This trim also comes with upgraded brakes and electronic line-lock that is useful for warming up the tires.

We Recommend

The Mustang has always had an incredible price to performance ratio. It offers a great value for money with its heritage and iconic styling. The Mustang has evolved from a straight runner to a machine that can hold its ground around corners.

The pick of the lot is GT Premium trim and standard 6-speed manual. Add the optional GT performance package and we have a classic American icon in its modern avatar.

2017 Ford Mustang Engine

8.1/10

“Of course, a key component of the Mustang's appeal is what you get under the hood. We think the Mustang GT's V8 is the way to go given its impressive smoothness and 435 ponies. But even if you stick with the more affordable V6 or the turbocharged four-cylinder, the Mustang delivers respectable power and fuel economy.”- Edmunds

Engine and Transmission

Ford Mustang packs a V6 engine under the hood. This V6 engine is rated for 300 horsepower and 350 lb-ft. of torque. The power is delivered to the aft wheels via a 6-speed manual transmission.

The slick manual transmission is a great positive feature of this powertrain.

When we compare the Mustang, it easily scores the best 0-60 time. Even the quarter mile dash is one of the best in this comparison. The 370Z from Nissan manages to pull off better numbers.

Ride and Handling

The sixth generation Mustang sheds its image as a straight line – fast car. With the inclusion of independent rear suspension in the 2015 generation change, Mustang has come a forward with its newly found turn-in response. The steering is precise and provides a good on-center feel. Mustang produces tarmac-hugging grip levels. The suspension offers improved ride quality and filters most of the road undulations.

Braking

The 2017 Mustang Coupe is equipped with identical 12.6-inch brake rotors at the front and rear. The 3642 lbs. behemoth is able to come to a screeching halt from 60 mph within 106 feet.

The competition offers decent braking performance. The Chevy Camaro decelerates from 60 mph to a standstill within 112 feet.

2017 Ford Mustang Interior

8.0/10

“The front seats are comfortable and supportive, with ample head- and legroom for taller drivers. Opting for the available sport seats adds extra hip-hugging support, which comes in handy on twisting roads. However, these seats may be too snug for some occupants. The Mustang’s rear seats are cramped and best reserved for kids only.”-Cars.USnews

Seating and Comfort

The Mustang provides excellent cabin insulation, the road noise is limited to a great extent. Overall the cabin makes up for a pleasant place for those long road trip. The Recaro seats offer comfort and support for long trips. The rear seats are best suited for kids. Mustang is no longer a bare-bones car. The interior lavishly uses soft-touch materials to give a premium feel.

Ford Mustang comes with a seating capacity of four passengers. The front seats are supportive and comfortable. The driver’s seat also offers good visibility. The rear seats are quite narrow and should be reserved for your friends with short height.

The standard infotainment is offered with a run of a mill 4.2-inch display paired to a six-speaker stereo system. There is an optional 8.0-inch Sync 3 touchscreen unit available. This display unit comes with a 9-speaker setup and also offers satellite radio and voice-activated Satnav.

Cargo Capacity

The Mustang comes with a trunk volume of 13.5 cubic feet. The rear seats are quite uncomfortable but the 50/50 split allows more trunk space. The muscle car also lacks a proper storage area. The truck gets the optional Shaker stereo audio system that doesn’t allow more room. Above all, the Dodge Challenger offers a good trunk space of 16.2 cubic feet, while the Camaro comes with disappointing trunk space.

“…With its long hood, short trunk, sloping rear glass and tri-bar taillights, the 2017 Ford Mustang could never be mistaken for anything other than Ford's pony car. Yet this is no retro-wannabe. The sleek lines, aggressive headlights and windswept design also make the latest Mustang totally relevant today…”-KelleyBlueBook

The dimensions of the new Mustang are very similar to the Chevy Camaro. You can get a feel that Chevy has at least tried to come closer to the Mustang. It seems both are into tough competition this time. While, Dodge Challenge is still bigger in size, offering better cabin space too.

2017 Ford Mustang Competition

Ford Mustang Coupe vs. Dodge Challenger

The Dodge challenger reveals all the aspects of a muscle car. Unlike the Mustang, the Challenger lacks a turbo-four engine. The Challenger offers pure power with the V8 engine that has NSFW horsepower ratings.

Otherwise, the Mustang delivers better handling and fuel economy. The Challenger needs to be reworked on the interior as well. Dodge Challenger’s cabin is adult friendly while the Mustang struggles with the rear seat. The Challenger also offers more standard features and trunk space. As of now, the refreshed Mustang offer better appeal than the old-school Challenger.

Ford Mustang Coupe vs. Chevrolet Camaro

Chevy Camaro has been an age-old rival of Mustang. These both muscle cars have been competing with each other since ages. They both deliver similar power figures, with both turbo-fours and performance V8s. Mustang offers more premium cabin and comfortable seats than the Camaro. The Camaro has more available and standard features. Both appear to be very similar in many aspects, but the Ford Mustang would still be a great pick.

Ford Mustang Coupe vs. Nissan 370Z

The pricing starts at the north of $29,000. The V6 engine howls at higher revs and the cabin ambiance can be unpleasant for the liking of few. The ride is compliant but at the same time, the 370Z is not meant to satisfy you with its plethora creature comforts. The age of the vehicle is also an issue. The 370Z is due for a major refresh in a couple of years.

2017 Ford Mustang Final Verdict

The 2017 Ford Mustang EcoBoost is the base trim. It equipped with a 2.3 Liter that produces 310 horsepower and 350 lb-ft. of torque. The performance from this four-cylinder engine gives the larger V6 engines, a run for their money.

The Mustang becomes a little too much when you start testing the limits. In Sport+ and Race drive modes, the car goes under a transformation with its aggressive throttle response and heavy steering. The car loses out its refined nature and the exhaust note of the EcoBoost engine at redline isn’t a pleasing thing to hear. In these modes, the Mustang needs to be controlled with finesse and delicate touch.

The European standards were what American pony cars aspired to reach. But with this generation, the Ford Mustang has stepped up the game. The Mustang is no longer an exclusive straight-line runner. With the dynamic changes in this generation, Mustang has come up a notch to offer better drivability in straights and around the corners. The cabin comfort has also seen an improvement and the overall package has come across as more refined.

Pros

Generous use of soft touch materials in the cabin

Fuel Efficient EcoBoost engine

Independent Rear Suspension improves handling

Cons

Rear seats are uncomfortable for adults

The infotainment system is showing its age
