The sports convertible has been a body style that has stayed in the Ford Mustang line-up since time immemorial. Even though it is one such conduct that is frequently overlooked when you are out for performance cars, they have serious potential and should deserve more attention. The Mustang offers a lot of the buyer including a very practical interior, an excellent and well-designed body and incredible fit and finish. The new Ford Mustang GT Convertible is one stunning sports car that also manages to be priced incredibly well in the category.

Starting at an MSRP of $45,520, it is priced at the segment that gives it ample competition in the form of the Chevrolet Camaro 1SS convertible, BMW 4 Series Convertible, and Mercedes-Benz C-Class Convertible. All of these have enjoyed a fair share of the market and continue to do so. They are all very capable versions of excellent cars and hence makes for a very tough competition. Let us see what everyone else around the block has to offer, and how the Ford Mustang performs in the midst of its competition in the detailed review that is about to follow.

We Recommend

Since you’ve narrowed his choices down to the GT convertible trims, it is only a question of whether you want the premium version or not. Subject to the price difference of only $4000, we would say that you are better off when you equip the premium trim level. We feel that the Ford Mustang is still a dream for many Americans and a car that is very much sought-after. This makes it even more important to get the right spec when finely being able to buy the car. So for a price difference as small as this, we wouldn’t want you to skip out on features. The Premium trim comes with bramble performance brakes, a limited-slip differential, adaptive damping suspension, and heated and cooled front seats which make a big difference to your driving experience.

2022 Ford Mustang GT Convertible Release date

In terms of the release date, there has not been much information from the brand. We are expecting that the 2022 model of the Ford Mustang convertible will reach showrooms by Fall this year. This has been the trend with Ford releases of late and we expect it to be on time. However, deliveries are expected to start a bit later than that. Unprecedented delays due to the pandemic and the general economic slowdown have affected car manufacturers and hence we can totally understand the reason for these delays.

2022 Ford Mustang GT Convertible Engine and Performance

7.0/10

The 2022 Ford Mustang GT convertible comes with a 5 L naturally aspirated V-8 engine that produces 460 hp and 420 pound-feet of torque. The power figures are excellent and make sure that the car is capable on paper. Combine this with a slick six-speed manual transmission along with a 10-speed automatic that feels like a rocket of the line. There are many options such as an active exhaust that enhance this experience. This generation of Ford Mustang has also had a lot of praise for how old-school, yet modern this engine feels.

The drivetrain is rear-wheel-drive only as is the tradition with Mustangs. Speaking about outright acceleration, the convertible does really well, stomp on the pedal and it goes from 0 to 60 in just 4.1 seconds and goes on to complete the quarter-mile in 12.2 seconds. One also gets the impression that the current generation Mustang has come a long way in terms of its handling. It feels like a proper modern sports car now and there is also adequate feedback. The brakes are also confidence-inspiring and there is a lot of feedback from the pedals.

One can observe that the Ford Mustang is priced extremely well, and the only car that is cheaper than it in its category is the Chevrolet Camaro. Considering all its rivals, the Mustang has the most powerful engine here but the Camaro sets the benchmark in the segment in terms of acceleration as well as torque figures. The Mercedes and the BMW costs a lot extra and are a bit slower but deliver their kind of unique driving experience. The Mercedes is the most expensive car in the segment while not having a certain novelty to it that the Mustang has. In terms of performance as well as pricing, Ford has actually struck a really good balance.

2022 Ford Mustang GT Convertible Fuel Economy

9.0/10

Being equipped with a 5 L naturally aspirated V-8 engine, one does not expect a lot of fuel efficiency from the Mustang as it is all about old-school charm. And it’s best that owners fax themselves lyrical about old-school sound without mentioning the word fuel efficiency because they are not getting it from the Mustang. Even the city fuel efficiency is decent compared to what it once was but 15 MPG is nothing to brag about. On the highway, things are a little better at 24 MPG. The 16-gallon fuel tank gives it a bad traveling range overall so is not class-leading by any means. However, its competitors do not manage to make things a lot better either.

The BMW manages to better the fuel efficiency ratings of its competitors by a very fair amount. So much so that it’s almost beyond comparison to pitch it against some of its rivals. The Mercedes returns 22 MPG combined which is also a very good figure. Also, one thing that the competitors do extremely well is that, even though the Camaro has pretty much the same fuel efficiency figures as the Mustang, it offers a fuel tank that has 3 gallons more capacity. For this reason, the Mustang’s range figures seem abysmally low when you look at it next to its competitors. Fuel efficiency certainly is not a department of the Mustang.

2022 Ford Mustang GT Convertible Interior

7.0/10

The interior of the 2022 Ford Mustang convertible is a very pleasant and modern interior with several design touches that reminds you of Mustangs right from the 60s. Most of the body panels are covered in genuine leather, and alloy accents. The interior quality has also been great. There is a lot of functionality in the cabin and owners are greeted with a large number of features that make the car very usable and practical. We would say that deserves a lot of praise. Overall, might not be one of the best-looking cabins in the segment but it is certainly impressive.

The back seats are not the best that we have seen around. The front seats are extremely well engineered and provide a lot of support and one can stay comfortable for long journeys as well as for track days. The ergonomics of the cabin are also excellent and make sure that none of the passengers are claustrophobic in a car this small. Cargo capacity is rather excellent for a convertible and definitely deserves praise. At 11.4 ft.³, it cannot carry a lot of luggage, but certainly a sizable amount for a convertible.

The cargo capacity of Ford Mustang sets the category benchmarks with all of its competitors scoring much lesser. However, it is the Mercedes and the BMW that have the most amount of space in the rear seat. We find that the Mustang has the least space in the segment but that is not the parameter we would judge it for. All cars offer seating capacity for only four people. One would find that the visibility of the Mustang is a bit of a challenge but it doesn’t take long to get used to either. Let’s see some of the interior highlights:

  • Proximity key
  • Front cupholders
  • Dual-zone automatic climate control
  • Panoramic sunroof
  • Nappa leather upholstery
  • Tilt & telescopic multi-function steering wheel
  • Leather steering wheel and shift knob
  • Heated and cooled front seats
  • Color-adjustable footwell lights

What’s there to keep you entertained?

The infotainment systems that have come in Fords of late have been very much excellent. The base infotainment system has an 8-inch touch screen and gets Android Auto as well as Apple CarPlay as standard. The system has graphics that are crisp and vibrant but has not yet been updated for the Sync4 infotainment system. The sound system is excellent and provides very crisp audio. The navigation system is very simple to use and the controls are very straightforward. It keeps your life easy and has necessary features like a Wi-Fi hotspot. Some of the standard features of the infotainment system are:

  • 8-inch touchscreen display
  • 9-speaker sound system
  • Android Auto and Apple Carplay
  • SiriusXM satellite radio
  • 3 USB Ports
  • AM/FM Radio
  • Bluetooth Technology

2022 Ford Mustang GT Convertible Exterior

7.0/10

The 2022 Ford Mustang GT convertible is a true masterpiece in terms of design. There are excellent lines and subtle details on the car that give it a sense of aggression and substance. It breaks away from the typical Ford design language and acts as a purposeful and sporty car. We would argue that the coupé looks a little better but the convertible is not far behind. The wheel arches and the roofline are especially beautiful and the incredible buttresses on the car make it stand out as one of the best-looking cars in the segment despite its rivals being equally good-looking and dashing.

The Ford Mustang is the heaviest car in the segment. By dimensions, it is the widest, tallest and longest vehicle in the group today and yet it offers the least wheelbase. This explains why the rear seats of the Mustang are cramped but there is adequate cargo space. The Mercedes is a lot smaller in terms of sheer size but has no compromise in terms of the number of people that can fit in it. The Mustang also has decent ground clearance, making it much more useful than its competitors. It is surprising to note that the Camaro is on the lighter side of the category whereas it traditionally has not been a brand that has ever done so. Some of the exterior highlights include:

  • LED headlamps
  • LED DRLs
  • LED taillights
  • Power mirrors
  • Quad chrome exhaust tips
  • Black grille
  • Rear decklid spoiler
  • 18/19-inch painted alloy wheels

2022 Ford Mustang GT Convertible Safety

8.0/10

The 2022 Ford Mustang GT convertible has a solid safety quotient. It has been tested by the NHTSA and scored a total of five stars in the overall crash safety; it has been tested by the IIHS as well but has not had the same success in these tests. Since the 2022 car is based on the generation that has been running for a long while now, we can assume that Ford has only given it incremental changes other than big updates Ford. Audi has left no stone unturned in providing safety features to the car. Some standard safety features include:

  • AdvanceTrac with Electronic Stability Control
  • SOS Post-Crash Alert System
  • Blind Spot Monitoring
  • Lane Keeping Assist
  • Lane Departure Warning
  • Adaptive Cruise Control
  • Rear Cross-Traffic Alert
  • Rear Parking Sensors
  • Forward Collision Alert
  • Individual Tire Pressure Monitoring System
  • SecuriLock Passive Anti-Theft System

2022 Ford Mustang GT Convertible Competition

8.0/10

2022 Ford Mustang GT Convertible vs 2022 Chevrolet Camaro 1SS Convertible

The Chevrolet Camaro is a much smaller and nimble car. It also sets the benchmark in terms of acceleration in this category and is also a bit more fuel-efficient than the Mustang. However, it also has compromised in terms of the interior as well as cargo space. Overall, it is not as good a car as the Mustang if you want to look for a well-rounded car. However, if you want to have the most fun out of it while driving, the Camaro is the car to go for and it is also a little cheaper.

2022 Ford Mustang GT Convertible vs 2022 Mercedes-Benz C-Class Convertible

The Mercedes-Benz C Class convertible has always been the gold standard in this class when it comes to fit and finish and still continues to be so. But the fact is that the Mercedes is much more expensive than its competition. The Mercedes offers much better fuel efficiency and luxury in its interiors but does not remain as desirable a car like the Ford Mustang in terms of most other aspects. It is also a slower car and with Mustangs now handling as good as they look, it is not a car we would consider.

2022 Ford Mustang GT Convertible vs 2022 BMW 4 Series Convertible

The BMW 4 Series Convertible is one of the strongest rivals to the Audi. However, the Mustang is a better performing as well as better value for money car. It is also fun to drive which while the BMW also is, is not an equal comparison. In terms of fuel efficiency, the BMW scores very excellent results and also has excellent interiors and infotainment features. However, with the current redesign, it no longer looks like the desirable car it once was and we would pick the Mustang over it.

2022 Ford Mustang GT Convertible Final Verdict

The new Ford Mustang GT Convertible is one of the most desirable cars for the average American and continues to do so with each generation. It is offered at a cheaper price than rivals that are equal to it in terms of features and performance. It provides excellent performance and also a great driving experience with its 5 L V8 and all-around performance. It is also one of the most well-built cars that one can find in the market today. One of its only disadvantages is that it has a backseat that is cramped but that is not something to judge sports cars by. We would definitely bite into this car if given the chance.
