Expert Review, Pricing Analysis and Buying Guide

The starting price of the 2014 Mustang GT is $31,210 which goes up to $35,310 for the Premium trim. The main competitors of the Mustang GT in the affordable sports coupe segment are the snazzy Chevrolet Camaro and the aggressive Dodge Challenger. Continue with the article to know how the 2014 Mustang GT performs in front of its rivals in the segment.

Features

There are five trims given on the 2014 Ford Mustang. The V6, V6 Premium, and Shelby GT500 are reviewed separately. The base GT trim with a price tag of $31,210 offers cloth upholstery, leather-wrapped steering wheel, single-zone manual air conditioning, 4-speaker sound system, tilt-only steering wheel column, automatic headlights, and LED fog lights.

We Recommend

The biggest reason behind buying a Mustang GT is always going to be its superiority in performance rather than the luxury and comfort inside, thus we would suggest you go with the base GT trim. Not only does it offer the performance expected from the GT trim group, but it also has all the necessary features for your comfort.

Engine and Performance
9.0/10

A 5.0 liter naturally aspirated V8 engine is present under the hood of both 2014 Mustang trims. It is married to a 6-speed manual transmission and churns out 420 hp and 390 lb-ft of torque. The power gets transferred to the rear wheels as default. With this arrangement, the 2014 Mustang GT sprints from 0 to 60 mph in 4.7 seconds, while for a quarter-mile distance, 13.2 seconds are required.

The ride comfort is slightly compromised on the Mustang GT, but in return, it gives a high degree of handling, punchy performance, and great handling. With the 6-speed manual transmission, you can feel the real thrill of driving. For better performance, various packages offer better brakes, suspensions, and differential.

In terms of engine output, the Chevrolet Camaro has the lead, but it is expected to finish the 0-60mph goal 0.3 seconds later as compared to the Mustang GT. Next in line is the Challenger which has the least horsepower in the segment and is the slowest in the competition. It reaches 60 mph from a standstill 0.8 seconds later than the Mustang GT.

Fuel Economy
6.0/10

The 2014 Mustang GT is the most efficient coupe on the highways in the affordable sports car segment. As per EPA estimates, it returns fuel economy of 15 mpg in the city, 26 mpg on the highway, and 19 mpg combined. That said, the Mustang has the smallest fuel tank in the competition, which results in a poor range. On the other hand, the biggest fuel tank with the 19.1 gallons capacity is offered on the Challenger R/T.

The 2014 Challenger has the thirstiest engine in the competition as it returns 15/23/18 mpg in the city/highway/combined, respectively. Meanwhile, the Camaro has the best fuel efficiency in the city as compared to the other cars in the competition. That said, the fuel tank capacity of the Camaro is just 0.1 gallons less than the Dodge Challenger.

Interior
8.0/10

While the 2014 Mustang’s cabin is well organized, the quality of material used is not very high. You can find hard plastic all over the cabin. The inside of the door panels have vinyl trim, and seats are covered in cloth upholstery, which can be upgraded to leather-trimmed upholstery on the GT Premium trim. The steering wheel is wrapped in leather, but no heating option is given. The front row is comfortable to sit in, whereas the rear row lacks a decent amount of space.

A 4-way manual adjustment is given for the driver seat as standard, which can be upgraded to a 6-way power adjustment, while the power lumbar support comes standard on the Premium trim. The front passenger seat has a 2-way manual adjustment, which can be replaced with an optional 6-way power adjustment on the Premium trim. The base trim comes with the single-zone manual air conditioning, tilt steering column, day-night rearview mirror, one-touch power windows, two 12-V power outlets, and power door locks.

The 2014 Mustang GT has the least specious cabin of all. On the other hand, the Challenger offers the airiest cabin in the competition. The Camaro has the smallest trunk, while the Challenger comes with the biggest trunk. That said, the cargo capacity of the Mustang GT is 2.8 cu-ft less as compared to the Challenger. Major interior features include:

  • RECARO Sport cloth seats with manual adjustment (optional)
  • Leather-trimmed upholstery
  • Heated front seats (optional)
  • All-weather floor mats (optional)
  • dual-zone automatic temperature control (optional)
  • Leather-wrapped steering wheel
  • Ambient lighting

How intuitive is the 2014 Ford Mustang GT’s infotainment unit?

Ford GT lacks lucrative infotainment features. The standard features given on the base GT trim include a 4-speaker sound system, CD player, Message center, Radio Data System, and audio input jack. On the GT Premium trim, you get a Shaker 6-speaker sound system, MP3 player, SiriusXM, and a 4.2-inch LCD instrument cluster. With the Electronics Package, you can add an HD radio and a voice-activated Navigation System. Major infotainment features include:

  • 4-speaker sound system
  • Shaker 7-speaker sound system with subwoofer (optional)
  • SiriusXM
  • Radio data system
  • MP3 player
Exterior
8.0/10

The exterior styling of the Mustang is really something to drool over. At the front, the bold black grille has a dark-chrome pony badge. Hood-vented heat extractors make Mustang look more sporty and muscular. High-intensity discharge headlights and LED fog lights are given at the front. On the side, power mirrors integrated with a blind-spot feature are present.

At the back, the rear spoiler gives Mustang an athletic appeal. Rear sequential LED rear turn lights are given on the backside. An optional glass roof is given on the Premium trim. The 2014 Mustang GT runs on the standard 18-inch sparkle silver-painted aluminum wheels, which can be replaced with the optional 18" polished aluminum wheel or 19-inch machined aluminum wheels on the Premium trim.

If we compare the curb weight, the Challenger is the heaviest of all, which directly and indirectly affects its performance. Meanwhile, the Mustang is the lightest in the bunch. In terms of exterior dimensions, Challenger is the biggest coupe, while the smallest is the Mustang. The 2014 Camaro is squeezed between the two and has a wheelbase of 112.3 inches. Major exterior features include:

  • 18-inch Sparkle Silver-painted aluminum wheels
  • LED fog lamps
  • Automatic headlamps
  • Rear spoiler
  • Dual exhaust tips
  • Rear-window defroster
  • 19-inch black-painted machined aluminum wheels (optional)
  • Spoiler delete (optional)
  • Glass roof (optional)
Safety
7.0/10

NHTSA has given a 4-star overall safety rating to the 2014 Mustang. Meanwhile, the IIHS has assigned a mixture of ‘Good’ and ‘Acceptable’ ratings in the crashworthiness tests. That said, the 2014 Mustang GT is not equipped with very advanced safety features, but it has all the basic stuff you would expect. These safety features include cruise control, front safety belt reminder, Mykey, passive anti-theft system, and illuminated entry system. Optional features such as the reverse sensing system, active anti-theft system, and wheel locks are also given. Major safety features include:

  • AdvanceTrac electronic stability control
  • Cruise control
  • SOS Post-Crash Alert System
  • Mykey
  • Safety belt reminder
  • Tire pressure monitoring system
  • Rearview camera (optional)
Final Verdict

There is no doubt that the 2014 Ford Mustang GT offers an action-packed performance and an exceptional driving experience. However, when it comes to interior space and features, the Dodge Challenger is a much better performer, though you will have to compromise on the fast acceleration. That said, the Chevrolet Camaro is an all-rounder but gets a blow because of the low cargo capacity. Therefore, you can either go with the Camaro or go for the 2015 Mustang GT, which has received a full redesign.

Cumbersome handling.

Pros - Looks, Strong engine.

Cons - Handling, Door latch issue, No telescopic steering wheel.

Lacks telescopic steering wheel. The Ford Mustang GT doesn't impress me much in most ways. Yeah, it does look good and has enough punch from the V8 engine. However, it doesn't handle so well around the corners. The car understeers a lot and feels all over the place. The passenger side door latch can't be opened from inside due to some issue. Moreover, it doesn't have the telescopic steering wheel...

Parts quality.

Pros - Spacious, nothing else.

Cons - Handling, Tail Lights, Clunky transmission.

Transmission is intrusive. I recently picked up a Ford Mustang GT with 85k miles on the odo but there are some problems with the car. The transmission causes jerk and makes clunk sounds while shifting from 2nd to 3rd. Hence, it is a bit difficult to drive in traffic. The tail brake lights don't work due to wiring problems. Moreover, the steering feels heavy around the corners. Therefore, the car ...

Pros - Decent fuel economy, reliable, Powerful, fun to drive.

Cons - Yet to find any issues.

The Muscle. I bought my 2014 Mustang GT with 41k miles on it 3 years ago and now it's close to 60 miles. I simply love driving this car, it isn't fuel efficient in normal standards but for a V8, it's darn fuel efficient with its 26 mpg highway economy. It performs really well and I don't think there's any problems with this car either. So basically I'm saying that this is a superb , reliable, pow...
