The Ford Mustang is one of the most iconic cars to be ever built by Ford. The Mustang is presently the longest-produced Ford automobile nameplate, having been produced continuously since 1964. It is currently the fifth best-selling Ford automobile marque and is in its sixth generation. It was created as a range of sporty coupes and convertibles with sophisticated styling that was borrowed from pre-existing model lines. The initial sales after its debut were quadruple than what was expected making it a fan favorite over the years. The 2023 model year is expected to be a carryover model.

Expert Review, Pricing Analysis and Buying Guide

The Ford Mustang GT Fastback is expected to be equipped with a 5-liter VCT V8 engine from the previous generations on the base trim and on the higher trims, it gets a 5L V8 engine on the Mach 1 and a 5.2 liter V8 on the Shelby GT500. The Mustang has been a fan favorite since its launch due to its muscular appearance and driving dynamics which makes it a superior car in the segment. We will be sticking our comparison to the GT fastback and GT premium fastback trim. The base MSRP starts at $38,045 and goes up to $43,065 for the GT Premium trim. The GT premium fastback trims can also be bought as convertibles. Primarily it faces competition against the likes of the Chevrolet Camaro, Dodge Challenger, and the Toyota GR Supra which we have added taking into consideration the similar pricepoint and sports car dynamics.

The 2023 Ford Mustang is expected to be offered in a total of 10 trims at different engine configurations and styles and the GT will be offered in two trims the normal Fastback and the Premium fastback which we will be reviewing today. The base GT trim starts at an MSRP of $38,045 and will go up all the way to $43,065 for the GT Premiun Fastback whereas the Shelby GT500 will cost $79,420. To make our comparison appropriate we will only be taking the base two trims the GT fastback and the GT premium fastback. Both the trims will come equipped with a 5L V8 engine mated with a 6 speed manual gearbox and RWD as standard but an option to upgrade to a 10 speed selectshift automatic transmission also will be available for an additional price. The high performance engine will give the Mustang a boost of 460 horsepower. It also gets three options of rear axle ratio. It gets 18 inch wheels as standard and can be upsized to 19 inches based on the choice of axle ratio and the package choosed. The GT Premium Fastback will be available in a convertible option also.

Engine and Performance

The Ford Mustang GT is equipped with a 5L V8 engine, which can churn out a horsepower of 460 horsepower and a torque of 420 lb-ft. The smaller engine on the Mustang delivers a sub par power of 310 HP. It comes matted with 6-speed manual as standard and this can also be upgraded to a 10-speed automatic. The Mustang is capable to pull from 0-60 in 4.4 seconds and reach the quarter-mile mark in 12.8 seconds. It has a registered top speed of 155 MPH.

In our performance comparison between the Dodge Challenger, Chevrolet Camaro, and the GR Supra. The Mustang gets a smaller capacity engine whereas the Challenger and Camaro gets 5.7L and 6.2L V8's the Supra gets relatively smaller 3L inline 6 engine. The GT engine is capable to churn out the best power and torque figures making the Mustang lead the pack with an output of 460 HP @ 7000 RPM slightly more than the Challenger and the Camaro. The torque figures are the best on the Mustang GT making it accelerate much faster but the heavier curb weight on the Mustang GT slows it down by 5 second to the Camaro in the 0-60 mark and 2 seconds to Challenger. The quarter-mile mark also portays a similar results with the Camaro being the fastest and reaching in at 12.2 seconds followed by Challenger, Mustang and GR Supra.

2023 Ford Mustang Ride and Handling

The ride and handling on the Ford Mustang GT is swift and agile making it better for corners and winding roads. It also feels very much grounded making it also better on straight lines. The independent suspension does a great job at absorbing shocks on bad patches and offers good stability and control during high speed turns. The traction controls also works perfectly in tandem with both the manual and the automatic shifter ensuring good power delivery across the rear wheel, translating to better control in loose gravel and snow. The front bucket seat also provides enough comfort aiding to the confidence of the driver.

2023 Ford Mustang Braking Performance

The Ford Mustang is equipped with a 14-inch rotors with two-piston calipers in the front and a 13-inch rotors with a single piston at the rear. The Mustang has ample stopping power and the rotors perform well in emergency situations. The brake pedals also feel responsive. It also gets an electronic line lock as standard which closes off the brake circuit and locks the wheels at the vehicle's non-drive end. Additionally, it also gets other braking features like ABS, and automatic emergency braking all of which adds to the braking performance of the Mustang.

With a front rotor measuring 15.35 inches and a rear rotor measuring 14.4 inches, the Chevrolet Camaro has the largest rotors. The Camaro performs better in terms of braking because it is also the lightest. The Challenger has smaller size disc brakes at front and rear. We believe that the Mustang’s braking performance is less effective compared to the competition. All three cars have improved performance braking on higher trim levels. According to us the Toyota GR Supra could have the better braking taking into consideration the Disc size and the curb weight which is the lightest in the segment.

Fuel Economy

In terms of fuel efficiency the GT engine does a great job by returning the MPG figures similar to the competition The Mustang GT has a EPA rated fuel efficiency of 15 MPG in the city, 24 MPG on the highway, and a combined figure of 18 MPG. The fuel efficiency is let down by a smaller tank capacity of 16 gallons. The Mustang has a range of 326 miles in the city, 450 miles on the highways and a combined range of 372 miles.

Fuel Tank Capacity (Gallons)

Range (City/Highway/Combined; Miles)

The fuel efficiency comparison is a bit skewed with addition of the GR Supra which has a comparatively smaller and efficient inline 6 engine which returns the maximum MPG numbers of 22 MPG in the city, 30 MPG on the highway, and a combined figure of 25 MPG. The smaller 13.7 gallons fuel tank is a let down for Supra and overall on an average a range between 300miles to 450 miles can be expected. The MPG figures are almost identical for Mustang GT, Challenger, and Camaro with only exception being the Challenger which gets one mile lesser on the highway. The Camaro has the biggest fuel tank in our comparison extending the overall range of it.

Like the modern models, the Ford Mustang's interior is uncomplicated and has a clean design. Seating for four people is welcome in the wide, spacious cabin. Having said that, the base trim's front seats are only manually adjustable, but a 6-way and 4-way power driver and passenger seat can be added. The inside has a good fit and finish thanks to the use of strong plastic and machine-milled metal trimmings. The interior space on the front row is excellent with plenty of legroom, but the headroom is a bit disappointing. The seat offers enough comfort for prolonged rides. It seems a bit packed in the second row. At 13.5 cubic feet, the cargo capacity is likewise not too awful.

Cargo Capacity (cu-ft.)

The Mustang, the Camaro and the Supra can only accommodate 4 passengers whereas the Dodge Challenger can easily accommodate 5 passengers. The Dodge Challenger also has the best second-row accommodations, with enough headroom, shoulder room, and legroom. With a capacity of 16.2 cubic feet, the cargo compartment is also the largest. The Mustang comes in the second position. With a capacity of approximately 9.1 cubic feet, the Camaro has the smallest cargo room. Overall the Mustang even though not spacious out of the bunch offers good comfort to passengers and the driver. The Supra is the least spacious in our comparison it could particularly has to do with the compact exterior dimensions of it.

Some of the key interior features available with the 2023 Ford Mustang are:

  • Cabin particulate air filter
  • Center console with full armrest
  • Intelligent access with push-button start
  • Leather-Wrapped steering with audio controls
  • Non-Adjustable Pedals
  • Power Accessory Delay
  • Dual Illuminated visor Vanity Mirrors
  • Carbon zag instrument panel applique

How intuitive is the 2023 Ford Mustang’s infotainment system?

The standard 4.2-inch Sync infotainment on the base trim is not up to the mark. Buyers should consider the Sync3 infotainment as it is more intuitive and user-friendly but the 8-inch center console navigation and operating system feel a bit outdated. The Sync 3 8-inch LCD capacitive touchscreen supports Android Auto and Apple Carplay. It also supports smart USB charging with dual USB ports. On the base trim, the 4.2-inch screen is paired with 6 speaker audio setup and this can be upgraded to a 9-speaker setup for an additional cost. Sadly we feel the infotainment system could have been improved upon for the 2023 model year.

Some of the most notable infotainment features available with the 2023 Ford Mustang are

  • App link
  • Android Auto
  • Voice commands
  • 911 assist
  • Steering wheel mounted controls
  • 6 speaker audio system

The 2023 Mustang follows the basic design language of the 2015 model year. The aerodynamic design with blacked-out grille with the chrome pony emblem reminiscence of the older models. The striking DRL and headlamps give the Mustang an aggressive stance. The three-strip rear tail light pays tribute to the 96 Mustang which introduced the three-strip taillights. The elongated hood slightly curving down towards the front gives it a streamlined appearance from the side. Talking about the exterior dimensions of the Mustang has a length of 188.5 lbs. It is wide by 75.4 inches and stands at a height of 54.3 inches. It also gets a decent ground clearance of 5.3 inches.

Compared to the competition the Mustang sits between the Camaro and the Challenger in terms of the length and height. Mustang gets the better ground clearance at 5.3 inches and is also the heaviest in the segment with a curb weight of 4089 lbs which helps in stability at high speed. The wheelbase of the Supra is the shortest which makes it better maneuverable compared to the competition. The Supra's aerodynamic and compact design makes it the smaller sports car in our comparison.

Some standout exterior features include:

  • LED headlamps with LED signature lighting
  • Blindspot information system with cross-traffic alert
  • Dual Bright exhaust with rolled polished tips
  • Easy fuel capless fuel filler
  • Hood vents
  • LED sequential taillights
  • Shark fin antenna
  • Rear diffuser
  • Rear window defroster

NHTSA’s overall crash test rating for the Ford Mustang is an impressive 5 stars. It also gets 5 stars in all individual test parameters making it one of the safest car in our comparison. This is can be attributed primarily to the Mustang’s design and the use of high-strength steel and the introduction of crumple zones in the construction of its structure. The Mustang also is equipped with 9 airbags ensuring the best safety for drivers and passengers alike. The Mustang also gets additional safety features like forward collision warning, lane keep assist, crash imminent braking, and dynamic brake support adding to the existing safety features.

Other standout safety features include:

  • 3-point safety restraint for all seating positions
  • AdvanceTrac with electronic stability control
  • SOS post-crash alert system
  • Auto high-beam headlamps
  • SecuriLock passive anti-theft system
  • Personal Safety system for driver and front passenger
  • Safety canopy side-curtain airbags
  • Perimeter Alarm

2023 Ford Mustang GT vs 2023 Dodge Challenger

The Ford Mustang GT slightly edges out the Challenger in our comparison. It boasts a strong V8 engine that better power and rapid acceleration. It has some of the best riding and handling on the market. The fuel efficiency is almost comparable. The Challenger's interior is less high-end and sophisticated than the Mustang's. But we believe the Challenger would be the best option for individuals searching for a 5-seater muscle car with ample cabin and cargo room.

2023 Ford Mustang vs 2022 Chevrolet Camaro

The Chevy Camaro is substantially more agile than the Mustang GT considering the shorter wheelbase. The Camaro performed better than the Mustang GT in our fuel efficiency comparison and also delivers slightly better power, torque figures along with the fastest 0-60 and quarter mile time. Mustang GT handles more precisely and feels much more grounded at high speeds. Thanks to its larger cabin, a bigger trunk than the Mustang GT scores well interms of interior space. Additional standard safety features improve the safety on offer for the Mustang GT. On paper we could call it a tie between these two. However, we choose to side with the Mustang GT considering it is slightly affordable than the Camaro 1SS.

2023 Ford Mustang vs 2022 Toyota GR Supra

The Toyota GR Supra cannot be considered as a direct competition to the muscle car segment, but we have included it considering the similar price point and the sports car characteristics of the Supra. The GR Supra is the smallest car in our comparison, this compact exterior dimensions and the styling adds greatly to aerodynamics of the car which inturns let's the Supra accelerate much faster. The fuel efficiency is better than the other three Muscle cars owing to the smaller more efficient engine. The compact design can accommodate only two people which could be a setback. The GR Supra trim which we have included is $1,000 costlier than the Mustang GT.

Final Verdict

The Ford Mustang has been racing past all competitors for close to 60 years now. Many models have come and gone over these years and the Pony has been living in the hearts of Americans for more than half a century. The Mustang has been inscribed in our hearts as the best American muscle car ever built.

The 2023 Mustang GT as an overall package tops our comparison but GT falls behind the rivals in few criteria, and a definitive recommendation could be difficult. 2023 will be the last year the GT will lock horns with the Challenger with the latter being discontinued after 2023 model same has been officially confirmed by Dodge. Until and unless another challenger is not born the Mustang GT will be holding on to its chair for the coming future. A word of caution to our readers from our side, the 2024 Mustang has been doing rounds for a while and people have got spy shots of the car. We are optimistic that some major changes and improvements might be introduced in the 2024 model year so we would advise our readers to hold on to your money, sit tight and wait for the 2024 release and make a decision. For those who are eagerly looking to own a pony and can’t wait you should definitely go and buy one but we strictly advice against it.
