The Ford Mustang Mach-E, as the name suggests, is based on the Mustang: at least in terms of the exterior. But the interior of the car and the safety quotient pack in a very different stories. It’s nothing like the standard Mustang. The one thing that gets this car close to the Mustang is the handling. It handles like the Mustang, and we’re mighty pleased by that.

Expert Review, Pricing Analysis and Buying Guide

The 2022 Ford Mustang Mach-E is a fine combination of Ford’s ICE ‘Lord’ and the upcoming electric future. The 2022 Ford Mustang Mach-E is the only Ford vehicle that has been designed as a completely electric car. However, the Mach-E does not have the most range, nor is it fast and neither comes at an affordable price tag. The 2022 Ford Mustang Mach-E competes against the likes of the 2022 Hyundai Kona Electric, the 2022 Tesla Model Y, and the 2022 Volkswagen ID.4.

2022 Ford Mustang Mach-e SUV Features

The 2022 Ford Mustang Mach-E comes in 4 trim levels: Select, California Route 1, Premium, and GT; with pricing ranging from $43,550 to $60,000. The trims vary in terms of battery and electric motor combinations. Standard features seen on all trim levels include 18-inch wheels, LED headlamps, LED tail lights, rotary gear shift dial, intelligent access with push-button start, rain-sensing wipers, SYNC 4A system, and a 15.5-inch touchscreen.

We Recommend

The 2022 Ford Mustang Mach-E Premium eAWD with the extended range is the trim to go for. The AWD functionality offers much better handling and drivability over the RWD version. It comes with a ton of features that are optional on the lower trims, and also gets a quicker charging time.

Release Date

The 2022 Ford Mustang Mach-E is available for orders. The GT version will hit later in the fall of 2021.

2022 Ford Mustang Mach-e SUV Engine and Performance

The 2022 Ford Mustang Mach-E gets two permanent magnet synchronous AC motors coupled with a single-speed transmission. The electric motor is mounted on the rear or on both axles, depending on the drivetrain configuration chosen (RWD or eAWD). Also, there is an option between the available battery packs, a standard, and an extended one.

The power and torque figures also change depending on the chosen battery configuration. The standard range-motor combination outputs 266 hp and 317 lb-ft torque on the RWD and 428 lb-ft torque on the eAWD version. The extended range-motor combination outputs 290 hp and 317 lb-ft torque on the RWD, and 346 hp and 428 lb-ft torque on the eAWD version. The top GT trim comes in only eAWD and outputs 480 hp and 600 lb-ft of torque. The GT performance edition gets an additional 34 lb-ft of torque.

The car comes with three driving modes: Whisper, Engaged, and Unbridled: similar to Eco, Sport, and a daily driver mode. The 2022 Ford Mustang Mach-E Select has a 0-60 mph time of 5.8 seconds, and a quarter-mile time of 14 seconds. The car has a rated top speed of 130 mph. The 2022 Ford Mustang Mach-E California Route 1 trim with the Extended-range battery and RWD has a 0-60 mph time of 6.1 seconds. The Premium trim times 0-60 mph at 4.8 seconds with the Extended-range battery and eAWD setup. The GT trim takes only 3.8 seconds with eAWD for the same.

The 2022 Ford Mustang Mach-E handling reminds one of the Mustang sedan, with the same agility and speed as expected. The eAWD version is better to drive, feels planted, and more engaging than the RWD version and most other electric SUVs in this segment. The Mustang is a mix-n-match in terms of handling and steering. The suspension has been tuned to the point, and the adaptive dampers can be adjusted according to the required firmness or software. The handling of the car is sharp and precise, but there is body movement around turns, and the car lacks engagement. At the same time, this body movement is composed and calm. In daily driving, the driving experience is smooth and nothing less than comfortable.

The Hyundai Kona is the only car that comes with FWD as standard. All the cars get a single-speed transmission. The Tesla makes the most power at 384 horses, and the most torque at 376 lb-ft and comes with AWD as standard. The least power is produced by the Kona Electric and the Volkswagen ID.4 at 201 horses. The ID.4 makes the least torque at 229 lb-ft. In terms of 0-60 mph time as well as quarter-mile time, the Tesla is the quickest, at 4.8 seconds and 12.7 seconds. It also has the highest top speed of 135 mph. The Mach-E is a second slower than the Tesla, and 1.3 seconds slower in terms of quarter-mile time. The ID.4 is slower than the competition, at 7.6 seconds for 0-60 mph and 16 seconds for the quarter-mile. The ID.4 has the least top speed of 100 mph.

2022 Ford Mustang Mach-e SUV Interior

The interior of the 2022 Ford Mustang Mach-E is spacious, and technologically advanced. The interiors are well laid out, with ergonomically placed buttons and controls that are easier for the driver to access. The dash is flat and nothing in the interior is too cluttered. The center console houses the 15.5-inch touchscreen, and the instrument console is a 10.2-inch screen. There are not many buttons or knobs in the cabin, and these are well finished and have a premium appeal to them. The cabin is well-insulated from outside noises and bumps.

The 2022 Ford Mustang Mach-E is a 5-seater car. The seats offer decent cushioning and support, but lack some expected adjustment features. Also, the lateral support from the seats is limited. The front offers enough headroom and legroom, with decent adjustability for a suitable seating position. In the rear, tall adults will find themselves comfortable with decent headroom. Frankly, extra legroom and headroom would be preferred. The visibility from the cabin offers a great view of what’s outside. The front center console houses some storage space, and also has two cup holders with a wireless charging feature. The side pockets have good depth, but less height. The ingress and egress functionality on the Mach-E will take some getting used to.

The interior space on the rivals is much better comparatively. However, the front space in all four cars is very similar. At the rear, the Tesla offers the most legroom and headroom which is 2 inches and 1 inch more than the Mach-E respectively, whereas the Volkswagen offers the most shoulder room, which is 0.1 inches more than the Mach-E.

In terms of cargo capacity, the Kona Electric offers the least cargo capacity at 19.2 cu-ft. This is under par by segment standards. The Tesla offers the most standard space, at 66 cu-ft. The Mach-E and the ID.4 come close, with cargo capacities of 29.7 cu-ft and 30.3 cu-ft respectively. The Mach-E offers the main trunk in the rear, but also has a smaller storage space at the front, which is equipped with a drain hole. Some of the interior features on the 2022 Ford Mustang Mach-E are:

  • Simulated leather upholstery
  • Keyless start and entry
  • 60/40 split-folding rear seats
  • Dual-zone climate control
  • Tilt-and-Telescopic steering wheel
  • Auto-dimming rearview mirrors

How intuitive is the car’s infotainment unit?

The 2022 Ford Mustang Mach-E’s infotainment unit is among the best in the market today. The unit is well-designed, utterly clean, easy to use, and easy to understand. The SYNC 4A system uses machine learning to customize every driver’s experience. On top of this, the system will get OTA updates, thus constantly improving the system over time. The navigation is seamless, and works smoothly. The system supports Android Auto and Apple CaPlay, with smartphone integration and wireless both. Other standard features include voice controls, SiriusXM, FordPass Connect, MP3 support, AM/FM radio, 6-speakers. The higher trim levels add a premium music system. Important features include:

  • SYNC 4A
  • Voice Control
  • Navigation
  • FordPass Connect
  • AM/FM Stereo
  • B&O Sound System with 9 speakers and a subwoofer

2022 Ford Mustang Mach-e SUV Exterior

The 2022 Ford Mustang Mach-E’s exterior is attractive and takes inspiration from the iconic Ford Mustang. The long-wheelbase with wheels pushed towards the ends, a long nose, the sequential tail lights, and the hood that dips into the flat front end are all from the Mustang. At the front, the signature galloping horse sits in the center at the front. The thin LED headlamps house sequential turn indicators and are similar to the ones on the standard Mustang. The front bumper includes the active grille shutters and the sensors for various features. A black trim runs across the lower lip of the front bumper and around the front central section as well. The Mach-E takes design inspiration from most crossover SUVs, and that explains the sloping roofline with a well-integrated roof spoiler. Along the side, the car features deep wheel arches which house beautiful twin 5-spoke wheels. The fenders get a slight protrusion as well, like a flare. The charging port sits just above the front left wheel. A thick shoulder line runs across the side and takes final shape at the rear tail lights. The side also features a “Mach-E'' badging. The door handles are located at the window-line and can be opened by a remote key function or by entering a lock code. The doors incorporate a push-button feature that opens the doors wide enough to pull them open. At the rear, the integrated roof spoiler features a LED brake light. The sequential rear LED taillights look excellent and add a sporty nature to the car.

With all the cars placed side by side, the Kona is the tiniest. The Tesla and the Mach-E are close in length. The Mach-E also sits closer to the ground. The Volkswagen ID.4 is the tallest, but hard to make that out directly. The Hyundai Kona benefits with its least weight among the 4 cars, at 3770 lbs. The Volkswagen weighs the most at 4559 lbs. The Tesla has the most length, width, and ground clearance among these four cars, at 187 inches, 75.6 inches, and 6.6 inches. The most height is seen on the Volkswagen, at 64.4 inches. In terms of wheelbase, the Mustang offers the most at 117 inches. The Kona Electric offers the least at 102.4 inches. Some exterior features on the 2022 Ford Mustang Mach-E are:

  • Adjustable and heated side mirrors with LED turn signals

  • Manual/ Hands-free liftgate
  • Windshield wiper with De-icer

2022 Ford Mustang Mach-e SUV Safety

The 2022 Ford Mustang Mach-E has not been rated by the IIHS or the NHTSA. The 2021 model, however, received IIHS’s Top Safety Pick award. The 2022 Ford Mustang Mach-E comes standard with airbags, traction control, stability control, front and rear deformation zones, and other active features as well. All the trims get Ford CoPilot360 2.0 and Ford CoPilot360 Assist 2.0 as standard. These include active safety features such as pre-collision system, lane-keeping system, post-collision braking, adaptive cruise control, etc. The 2022 Ford Mustang Mach-E is based on Ford’s GE1 platform, developed for only electric vehicles. The car’s chassis is made of lightweight, high-strength steel; and aluminum is used for the front and rear suspension components. Some of the safety features on the 2022 Ford Mustang Mach-E are:

2022 Ford Mustang Mach-e SUV Competition

2022 Ford Mustang Mach-E vs 2022 Hyundai Kona Electric

The 2022 Hyundai Kona Electric car is smaller, and slower. For 2022, the car gets a lot of styling updates and the inclusion of a 10-inch digital gauge display. The Kona is better equipped in terms of features over the Mach-E and offers more range as well. The initial acceleration on the Kona is snappy as well.

Like the Mach-E, the infotainment unit on the Kona is straightforward. It has a ton of safety features as well. Where the Kona suffers is at the price point: it is very well affordable than the Mach-E, but what the Kona offers on the highest trim, is all offered on the Mach-E’s base trim for a slight premium.

2022 Ford Mustang Mach-E vs 2022 Tesla Model Y

The 2022 Tesla Model Y features a very similar concept as seen on the 2022 Ford Mustang Mach-E, and is a fierce competitor. The Model Y however, offers slightly more range, more performance and comes with AWD as standard as well. The Model Y also has a charging infrastructure advantage, thanks to the Tesla superchargers across the country.

The Model Y also offers a slightly more roomy interior with better cargo capacity. However, the Mach-E’s handling and driving dynamics are better, and the ride quality is more composed and smooth. It also has better technical functionality over the Tesla Model Y. In terms of pricing, the Mach-E costs lower than the Tesla as well.

2022 Ford Mustang Mach-E vs 2022 Volkswagen ID.4

The 2022 Volkswagen ID.4 is probably the most direct rival to the 2022 Ford Mustang Mach-E. It has less power output and is a lot slower than the Mach-E, but offers more range and has a bigger battery pack as well. The Volkswagen ID.4 packs in a more spacious interior and the base trims of both the cars are very similar as well.

The 2022 Volkswagen ID.4 gets an AWD model, which gets a range of about 300 miles and gets a power output of 300 horses. This model comes very close to the Mach-E in terms of performance and does this while still being budget-friendly. However, the Mach-E is the preferred one in terms of driving dynamics.

2022 Ford Mustang Mach-e SUV Final Verdict

The Mach-E is the first of the 40 EV’s to enter Ford’s line-up, and we’re mighty pleased with what has come out of the factory. This car already rides on the legacy and fame of the ICE Mustang, and the electrification of this pony signifies a major change: While the Mach-E marks an important transition in the electrification of the Ford brand, the SUV retains the essence of compactness, power, and affordability the combustion Mustang has always strived to offer. The 2022 Ford Mustang Mach-E is a complete package: It features a balance in terms of range, performance, design, features, and comfort. There is no understating of the Mach-E’s offer: It's a Mustang, it's electric, and it's an SUV: worth it all.
