An all-electric SUV isn’t usually what we would associate with the Mustang name but the Ford Mustang Mach-e is an example of that, it is a four-door electric midsize SUV rather than the two-door sports cars we associate the Mustang name with. The Mach-e has insane acceleration, a stylish design, and a respectable range, making it one of the most coveted EVs in the market right now with the legendary Mustang name behind it. Coupled with quality exteriors and exceptional handling, the Ford Mustang Mach-e is a serious contender among the electric SUVs and the plush and comfortable interior gives it an edge over the rest in terms of daily driving and convenience. The various packages that are offered across its trims give it further customizability and uniqueness.

Expert Review, Pricing Analysis and Buying Guide

For 2023, the Ford Mustang Mach-e SUV comes with mild changes to its range and efficiency all across the trims but we expect no major changes to roll over just yet. The two new paint schemes are a welcome addition as they are attractive and eye-catching. The 2021 launch saw it come across as a luxury-oriented SUV with the coveted GT Line and it is one of the best in that regard. With relatively mild tweaks consistently appearing across the Mustang Mach-e’s lineup, the 2023 Ford Mustang Mach-E SUV will be competing against the Audi e-Tron, the Volkswagen ID.4, and the Tesla Model Y.

Buying Advice

The sweet spot for the 2023 Mustang Mach-E SUV would be the Premium trim because it offers both RWD and AWD powertrain configurations along with standard range and extended range battery pack options. All-inclusive, it offers you a healthy mix of performance, range, and premium features like a hands-free liftgate, heated front seats, multicolor ambient interior lights, a 10-speaker B&O sound system, and much more.

The 2023 Ford Mustang Mach-e comes in the standard three-trim layout that has been seen throughout its history excluding the GT line which will be reviewed separately. The models are named Select, Premium, and California Route 1. The base Select trim will set you back $46,895 and for that price the select offers various features like Keyless entry and start, Simulated leather upholstery, Dual zone climate control, and much more. The higher trims have more convenient features like a Panoramic fixed-glass roof, an Automated parking system, Heated front seats, Multi-color ambient lighting, and much more. It also has an RWD variant, unlike the higher California Route 1 trim. Overall, the trim layout features a balanced progression within itself with each trim building off of the lower one which is a great addition, and the inclusion of various packages to sweeten the deal is a welcome addition.

California Route 1

18” Carbonized Gray-Painted Wheel

19” Wheel Black Painted Pockets

18” Wheel Black-Painted with Aero Cover

15.5” Touch Screen

Panoramic Fixed-Glass Roof

Black Painted Door Cladding & Wheel

Ford BlueCruise

B&O 10-Speaker Sound System

Unique California Route 1 Badging

360 Degree Camera

Heated Front Row Seats

Driver's seat memory settings

Wireless smartphone charging pad

Heated Steering Wheel

Surround-view camera system

Six-speaker audio system

Navigation system

Power-folding and heated exterior mirrors

Adaptive cruise control

Multi-color ambient lighting

Overall, the trims all have their benefits as long as a price difference for said benefits. The base trim has all the necessities and standard tech features we would expect from a high-end SUV and the higher premium trim is a more luxury-oriented trim with heated steering and front-row seats and an integrated navigation system. The California Route 1 is a more avant-garde trim with a slightly bolder layout and a more balanced approach to both comfort and practicality. We did notice that the base trim had to pay extra to access the fully active BlueCruise system which let us down slightly. Some of the packages on offer for the 2023 Ford Mustang Mach-E SUV include-

Ford Mobile Power Cord

  •  Portable Mobile
  • Works with 120V outlet or 240V NEMA 14-50 outlet
  • Charge at 32 amps if using 240 volts

Interior Protection Package

  • Cargo Floor Liner
  • 1st and 2nd Row Floor Liners

We Recommend

We would recommend the Premium trim as it provides a healthy mix between comfort and convenience while not attracting the steep price increase. The standard battery is more than enough for city driving but if charging ports are rare in your area you could opt for the extended battery range option. Personally, we really enjoyed the Standard battery range option with the AWD variant along with the Cyber metallic orange paint scheme along with the Perforated ActiveX Seating Material Light Space Gray interior for a more contrasting and beautiful exterior and interior. We would also recommend picking up the Ford Mobile Power Cord for a better charging experience and fewer constraints and calculations while driving.

Engine and Performance

One of the most exciting features of the 2023 Ford Mustang Mach-E SUV is its performance and the interesting choice of a permanent magnet synchronous AC motor in the rear axle for the RWD variant and an extra motor upfront for the AWD variant pleased us very much. The single-speed direct-drive transmission is also a boon as it shifts smoothly and produces predictable and manageable power. Using all of this, the Ford Mustang Mach-e accelerates from 0 to 60 in a brisk 6.0 seconds in the base RWD variant which is adequate and fun for an SUV its size. This can be boosted by the Premium trim's Extended Range Battery and eAWD setup to a quick 4.8 seconds which is incredibly quick.

The Tesla Model Y has the quickest acceleration and the highest top speed along with a more capable engine which gives it first place among the SUVs. The Audi E-Tron comes in second with quick acceleration and a high top speed. The 2-speed direct drive transmission is unusual but not a detriment to the SUV. The Ford Mustang Mach-E comes in third place behind the two SUVs with respectable acceleration and decent engine power. The Volkswagen ID.4 Pro has the lowest engine power output and will have a slower acceleration which puts it at the bottom when it comes to performance.

2023 Ford Mustang Mach-E SUV Ride and handling

The Ford Mustang Mach-E has a similar ride and handling as last year because there have been no changes to speak of in the interiors. Although it is a wagon-like SUV, it still has brisk acceleration and a competent top speed along with excellent handling. The SUV remains composed through bends and turns due to its short ground clearance and stable suspension. It handles more like a rear-wheel drive sports sedan than an SUV with its composed turning and stable driving dynamics. The regenerative braking feels suitable and works well as a means to decelerate rather than using the brake pedal. The car definitely has the Mustang feel all across its handling and the ride is no different as it is comfortable and less jittery than the competitors. Cabin noise is minimal and the SUV does not struggle at higher speeds.

2023 Ford Mustang Mach-E SUV Braking performance

With a low curb weight of 4394 lbs, the Mustang Mach-e stops as quickly as it accelerates. It has 14.2-inch brake rotors in the front and 12.4-inch brake rotors in the rear which provide further assistance when braking. The Ventilated front discs and solid rear disc brakes have a competent braking action and balance the acceleration well. As discussed previously, regenerative braking is a pleasure to have and the car decelerates at a steady pace as soon as you lift your leg off of the pedal. The braking action feels solid but the brake pedal itself feels less refined and requires a while to get used to. It feels uncommitted and grabby at times which can get frustrating when not accustomed to it.

The Ford Mustang Mach-E has the quickest braking action along with the lowest curb weight that further helps its braking speed. The Tesla Model Y is not so far behind with a respectably quick braking action and the second-lowest curb weight. We do not have data associated with the Volkswagen ID.4 Pro’s stopping distance but the low curb weight coupled with decent albeit short brake rotors give it a decent stopping power. Despite having the biggest brake rotors, the Audi E-Tron has the slowest braking action and struggles slightly to brake when compared to its rivals, primarily due to its high curb weight.

Fuel Economy

The 2023 Ford Mustang Mach-E range has the stamina to travel 247 miles in its Select configuration with 70kWh battery pack which increases to 270 miles for the Mustang Mach-E GT AWD. This goes even farther to 303 miles and 314 miles for the Mustang Mach E Premium RWD and Mustang Mach E California Route 1 RWD respectively.

Going by the numbers, the Mustang Mach E offers 83 miles range less than the Tesla Model Y. While the VW ID.4 Pro will have 27 miles extra against the Mach E but manages to beat the Audi e-Tron by 25 miles despite having 15 kWh smaller battery pack.

As we go higher among the trims, the Mustang Mach-e starts to get more comfort-oriented features like heated steering and front seats, Driver seat Memory Function, multi-color ambient lighting, and much more but the base trim misses out on these amenities. However, even at the base trim, the Mustang Mach-e is comfortable with its Black Onyx ActiveX Seats which gives it a premium finish. The interior looks premium with the sleek interior accents and the ambient lighting makes it look futuristic. The dashboard is much the same with a futuristic theme coming to it as well. It has a digital driver display that ditches the traditional circular stance for a more modern rectangular build and the rest looks minimalistic but sufficient.

The Ford Mustang Mach-E has the best front row space but it compromises on the rear row space and the cargo capacity which can be a turn off for some. The Audi E-Tron provides a more balanced approach when it comes to interior space and has a decent cargo capacity, albeit, on the smaller side. The Tesla Model Y provides the best cargo capacity among the competition but has a slightly smaller interior to make up for it. The Volkswagen ID.4 Pro also has a wide front row space but compromises on the rear row space to do so but not on the cargo capacity. Some of the standout interior features of the 2023 Ford Mustang Mach-E are:-

  • Simulated leather upholstery
  • Dual-zone automatic climate control
  • Heated front seats (premium)
  • Power-adjustable front passenger seat (premium)
  • Multi-color ambient lighting (premium)
  • Heated steering wheel(California Route 1)

2023 Ford Mustang Mach-E SUV Infotainment System

The infotainment system on the 2023 Mustang Mach-e is a 15.5-inch vertically mounted touchscreen which looks incredibly sleek and high tech. It runs Ford's next-generation Sync that uses machine learning to customize itself to suit the driver. In our experience we found the UI to be hassle-free if not a little time-consuming to fully set up and make it unique. The system is paired with a six-speaker audio system in the base trim and an upgraded 10-speaker Bang & Olufsen audio system in the premium trim. Standard features include wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration, built-in navigation, remote monitoring and control via the smartphone app, and a wireless smartphone charging pad. Some of the standout features of the infotainment system include:-

  • 15.5-inch vertically mounted touchscreen
  • Machine learning to customize UI
  • Six-speaker audio system
  • Built-in navigation
  • Wireless smartphone charging pad
  • Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto

The exterior of the Ford Mach-e features a modern take on the traditional Mustang design and form. The front fascia looks sleek and smart with a dripping front hood with grille shutters flanked by two sleek LED headlights. The sides are much tamer with sleek exterior accents and a sloping roofline that gives the side profile an unassuming but powerful look. The back features the coveted Mustang logo along with a Tri-LED taillight setup on both sides, jutting out of the body to attract attention. The base trim has beautiful 18-inch Carbonized Gray-Painted wheels while the premium trim has 19-inch Wheel Black Painted Pockets. The paint schemes are soft and easy on the eyes, the brighter ones don’t feel tacky even though some are more outgoing than others.

The Audi E-Tron has the longest body, the tallest build, and the highest ground clearance among its peers. It is followed by the Tesla Model Y, which has the second longest build and a much more simple design than the E-Tron. The Ford Mustang Mach-E comes right behind the Model Y in terms of dimensions but has the longest wheelbase among the competition. The Volkswagen ID.4 Pro is the smallest SUV in this segment with the smallest stance to go along with it.

Some of the standout exterior features of the 2023 Ford Mustang Mach-e are:-

  • LED headlamps and taillights
  • 18-inch alloy wheels
  • Adjustable and heated side mirrors with LED turn signals
  • Panoramic Sunroof
  • Sloping roofline
  • Windshield wiper with De-icer

As an EV, the Mustang Mach-e has all the cutting edge technology available and that extends to its safety features and driver assistance aids as well. It has BlueCruise, Ford’s answer to Tesla’s Autosteer. Other than that it also has the Co-Pilot360 which grants access to numerous driving aids like Adaptive cruise control, Frontal collision mitigation, Blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert, Lane centering, and Rear parking sensors with automatic braking. The higher trims also get Co-Pilot360 assist 2.0 which builds upon the previously mentioned features with evasive steering assist, speed sign recognition, and intersectional assist. The 2021 Mustang Mach-e was the Top safety pick of IIHS and the SUV has not been rated by the NHTSA as of yet. Some of the standout safety features of the 2023 Ford Mustang Mach-E are:-

  • BlueCruise
  • Pre-Collision Assist with Automatic Emergency Braking
  • Blindspot Information System with Cross-Traffic Alert
  • Lane-Keeping Assist
  • Post-Collision Braking Assist
  • Speed Sign Recognition

2023 Ford Mustang Mach-E SUV VS 2023 Audi E-Tron

The Audi E-Tron has been a well-established performer in the EV scene as a higher end luxury EV with decent acceleration and a spacious cabin but the Ford Mustang Mach-e completely decimates the E-Tron even though it is priced at a much lower range. It has a quicker braking actin, a lighter body, a better and more efficient drivetrain, better MPGe estimates, and a bigger driving range despite a smaller Batter pack, a more spacious interior, greater cargo capacity, and a longer wheelbase. The E-Tron does have quicker acceleration, lower ground clearance, and a higher horsepower output but ultimately cannot beat the multitude of stats where it loses against the Mustang Mach-e.

2023 Ford Mustang Mach-E SUV VS 2023 Tesla Model Y

Tesla is an innovator and a specifically EV-centric company so beating them at their own game is rather difficult but the Ford Mustang Mach-e comes really close in some instances and even outperforms the Model Y with its GT line. The Mustang Mach-e has a quicker braking action, a lighter body, a more spacious interior, a greater cargo capacity, and a longer wheelbase. Whereas, the Model Y has quicker acceleration, a higher top speed, a more powerful engine, and a more efficient drivetrain giving it better MPGe estimates, a bigger battery pack and driving range, and a higher ground clearance.

2023 Ford Mustang Mach-E SUV VS 2023 Volkswagen ID.4 Pro

Volkswagen isn’t the first name we would associate with EVs but they have had a go on their own and have created an EV that may not be as powerful but a similar form factor at a much lower cost when compared to the Mustang Mach-e. It has a better MPGe estimate, a bigger battery pack, a larger driving range, a more spacious interior, and a greater cargo capacity. Whereas, the Mustang Mach-e has quicker acceleration, a higher top speed, a lighter build, and a longer wheelbase. We must also keep in mind that the Volkswagen ID.4 Pro is much cheaper than the Ford Mustang Mach-e.

Final Verdict

We would highly recommend the Ford Mustang Mach-e, in fact right after the Tesla lineup we would recommend this EV. It has decent acceleration, a large driving range, greater customizability with drivetrains and battery packs, bright and intuitive paint schemes, a minimalistic but classy-looking interior that is filled with high-end tech features, and a fun-to-drive nature that impressed us immensely. Although we were skeptical at first as to whether or not it will live up to the Mustang name, it rather creates its own distinct brand rather than leach off of the Mustang name. We were also impressed by the trims and their availability as even the base trim is a good choice but we were slightly bummed out at the fact that a wider variety of packages was not present. We further noticed the tendency of the SUV to always behave like an RWD variant even with the AWD drivetrain which can be a letdown for some but if all that doesn’t bother you, the 2023 Ford Mustang Mach-e would be a worthy addition as a daily driver for almost anybody and will seldom disappoint.
