2017 Ford Mustang Shelby GT350 Coupe Engine

10/10

"Starting with the engine: Ford’s 5.2-liter flat-plane crank V8 is wonderful on the stock car, sounds like a race car from the 1960s, screams at 5,000 and shatters glass at 8,000".-Autoweek

Engine and Transmission

The high-revving and raucous 5.2-liter V8 engine is a sweet amalgamation of natural aspiration and modern ingenuity even though it has no turbos. Featuring direct injection, flat-plane crankshaft, variable valve timing, and other tuning tricks - the V8 engine whips up 526 horsepower at 7500 rpm and 429-pound-feet of torque at 4750 rpm. The exhaust system houses two settings i.e., Normal and Sport. Both these settings are available to all the driving modes i.e., Normal, Weather, Track, Sport and Drag Strip. Switching the exhaust setting to Sport reduces the exhaust noise and increases the rumbling. What adds to the sweet driving experience is its satisfying 6speed manual transmission and a lightweight clutch making the shifting seem effortless.

The 2017 Ford Shelby GT350 Coupe has an overall powerful engine output of 526 horsepower but it falls behind in lesser torque generation of 429-pound-feet up against the 460-pound-feet torque of Chevrolet Corvette Stingray, which does have a lower horsepower of 455. The Jaguar F-Type ends up being the car with the least powerful engine with the lowest outputs of 340 horsepower and 332-pound-feet of torque.

Acceleration

If you think the 2017 Ford Shelby GT350 Coupe is only made for racetracks, you would be proved wrong by its daily driving abilities. The peaky nature of its naturally aspirated engine thrusts massively until it redlines at a shocking 8200 rpm. The fluid feedback of the buoyant clutch makes it easier for you to shift through the gears rapidly even in high-traffic roads. Similarly, the shifter slots accurately into each gear and quickly shuffles through the ratios.

Quite surprisingly, the Jaguar F-Type has the best initial acceleration of 0-60 mph in 3.3 seconds even though it has the least powerful engine. The 2017 Ford Shelby GT350 Coupe and the Chevrolet Corvette share an equal of 3.8 seconds to reach the 60 mph mark.

However, over the quarter mile, the Chevrolet manages to swoop past everyone and covers the distance the fastest in 11.2 seconds, leaving the initially fastest Jaguar behind at 11.6 seconds. On the contrary, the 2017 Ford Shelby GT350 Coupe does it the slowest in 12.2 seconds.

In terms of emissions, the Ford suffers as well while the Chevrolet and the Jaguar share lower and equal emission ratings.

Handling and Steering

The MagneRide adaptive dampers of the 2017 Ford Shelby GT350 Coupe have Normal and Sport settings that provide a compliant cruise on the highway and firm grip on the racetrack. The secret behind its high performance and exceptional cornering abilities is its enhanced aerodynamics, special carbon fiber tires, and custom tuned chassis. The steering wheel is electrically assisted and has good feedback. It features three very accurate settings – Normal, Comfort and Sport.

Braking

The power Brembo brake calipers clamp the giant front rotors and provide fortuitous recovery from great speeds. The response time is tremendous although the pedal may need some getting used to.

2017 Ford Mustang Shelby GT350 Coupe Interior

7.0/10

Seating and comfort

The interior of the 2017 Ford Shelby GT350 Coupe is a clever mix of retro and modern styling with an ample amount of front seat legroom. However, the overuse of hard plastics makes it feel a little low grade compared to the exterior features. The rear seats feel cramped, especially for adults. The Recaro front seats are standard, they provide eminent lateral support to cater to aggressive driving, and they feel comfortable for daily use as well.

2017 Ford Shelby GT350 Coupe vs Chevrolet Corvette Stingray

Counted as one of the best sports cars in the world, the Chevrolet Corvette Stingray stands lives up to the expectations with its beefy performance and classy interiors befitting its stature. The 6.2-liter V8 engine comes with two transmissions i.e., a standard 7speed manual and an optional 8speed automatic. In comparison with the 2017 Ford Shelby GT350 Coupe, the Chevrolet has a slightly less powerful engine and a slightly faster acceleration. The braking is a bit poor but the fuel economy is better.

2017 Ford Shelby GT350 Coupe vs Jaguar F-Type Coupe

The Jaguar F-Type Coupes succeeds in striking your minds as an absolute stunner with its wide rear launches and long hood. It offers sharp handling and a driving experience as good as its styling. Other than its powerful performance, it is also very comfortable to ride in when going on long road trips and the well-appointed interiors make sure you have a pleasant experience. Up against the 2017 Ford Shelby GT350 Coupe, the Jaguar struggles by quite a big margin in its engine outputs but surprises with its exceptionally quick acceleration. It struggles with its brakes but copes up with its impressive fuel economy.

2017 Ford Mustang Shelby GT350 Coupe Final Verdict

The 2017 Ford Shelby GT350 Coupe impresses in many levels and secures its position among the top sports cars around the world with its classy looks and outrageous performance stats. The lack of rear seat area is what bugs us the most. The car has a passenger capacity of four people but it is no good if the rear passengers have to experience a claustrophobic environment. Moreover, the lack of active safety features is a matter of real concern. Being the cheapest among the rivals and providing better performance in several aspects, the 2017 Ford Shelby GT350 Coupe is our instant favorite and we would highly recommend you to go for it if you are looking for a sports car!
