The Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 is just a Mustang, turned into multi-folds of crazy power and aggression. It is the pinnacle of how crazy a Mustang can be, and how to turn one into a track monster with all the crazy horsepower numbers and a very scary V8 note that can easily get cops called by your neighbours, every morning. The GT500 goes against the muscle-car ethos with aerodynamic body, lightweight parts, and exceptional cornering ability.

The 2022 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 is said to be carried forward unchanged albeit a price hike. Rumours do suggest improvements made to the engine and the transmission but on the macro scale of things, the changes are minimal. That said, the Shelby GT500 does go up against the Super Saiyan form of fellow muscle cars - the Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 1LE and the Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat Redeye, along with the sophisticated German BMW M4 Competition.

2022 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 Coupe Features

The 2022 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 will be available as a standalone package and will be filled up to the brim as far as features go, with the context of a performance-oriented car. As for the prie, the car is expected to fit the bill at north of $70,000 which is a pretty big number for a Mustang. That said, the features list does include some important ones like power-adjustable seating with heating and ventilation, dual-zone climate control, wi-fi hotspot, leather-trimmed seating areas, and blind-spot monitoring system. Some of the other features on offer are:

Since there are no trims, the Shelby GT500 is the best had as is because there is everything one needs from a muscle car like this, along with other nice features not usually seen in a car like this. The GT500 does bring in some packages as well, of which, we’d recommend the Technology package that adds a better 12-speaker Bang & Olufsen audio system with subwoofer, driver's seat with three-position memory, navigation, and heated outside rearview mirrors with memory and Cobra puddle lights making it a complete package.

2022 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 Coupe Engine and Performance

9.5/10

The 2022 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 is expected to be powered by the same engine that it has now - a supercharged 5.2L V8 that sounds terrific and pushes out a massive760 horsepower and 625 lb-ft of torque and sends it to the rear wheels only, with no AWD on offer whatsoever.

2022 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 Coupe driving view

This mammoth of an engine is mated to a Tremec 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission that is a very slick unit and the best in terms of shifting precision.

Since all the cars speak serious figures, let’s start off by our justification of why we’ve chosen the M4 Competition, an inline-6 amongst the vicious V8s. Short answer is - performance. The smaller engine is twin turbocharged and matches the acceleration times of the American V8s on the run to 60 MPH as well as beats them to the quarter-mile. Amongst the American V8s, the Camaro is the quickest, while the Shelby isn’t too far behind.

How does it handle?

With all the stuff under the hood and inside the powertrain, the 2022 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 is surely a charmer on the twisty roads. The engine isn’t the run-of-the-mill Coyote found in the GTs, nor is it the Voodoo engine found in the GT350R. The Shelby GT500 is a totally different animal that runs “Predator” under its hood. The exhaust is loud and has four stages of symphony. The steering is as extreme as Ford can give, so is the chassis and the overall driving experience.

In the city, the car is stiff and is not recommended for staying sane. The city limits get to the engine, which then starts heating up. The ride is stiff and the insulation in the cabin is minimal to enjoy the engine note. On the highway, the car feels at home partially with its tremendous torque band and slick gearbox, causing no issues in overtaking.

Braking performance

The 2022 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 is loud, powerful, and fast but another thing it does well is coming to a halt, be it on the road or on the track while entering a corner. Shedding speed in the GT500 is done via massive 16.5 Brembo ultra-high-performance rotors at the front with six-piston calipers, while the rear wheels get 14.6 rotors with four-piston calipers. The result? A stop from 70 MPH in just 142 feet!

The brake rotors on the GT500 are the biggest in the bunch, no doubt, and do a pretty impressive job of bringing the 760 hp machine to a stop in just 142 feet from a speed of 70 MPH but, as they say, there’s always a better one. In this case, the “better one” is the ZL1 1LE that stops 5 feet earlier than the Shelby all due to the lower curb weight it carries.

2022 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 Coupe Fuel Economy

4.5/10

The supercharged 5.2L V8 in the Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 isn’t the best bet if one is expecting fuel economy. With EPA-estimated returns of 12 MPG in the city and 18 MPG on the highway, the car can do merely 14 MPG combined from a decently-big 16-gallon fuel tank. The Predator engine isn’t meant for being all green and eco-friendly nor does anyone expect it to be, so, we’d say it delivers on its promise. Also, since there are no expected changes for 2022, expect the estimates to be similar.

None of the cars have a good fuel economy per se but, comparatively, the inline-6 on the M4 Competition takes the lead for providing the highest numbers. These numbers do not translate to excellent range since the tank is small, and here, the Camaro takes the preference with the largest fuel tank on offer. The GT500’s range and fuel efficiency both remain the worst but, who cares as long as the supercharger whine wins the day?

2022 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 Coupe Interior

6.0/10

One big zonk that people see in the Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 is that the interior isn’t fancy as in, say, a BMW M4 Competition. The interior is stripped right out of the other “lesser” Mustangs and has the Shelby logo slapped on instead of the Blue Oval. The story is expected to remain the same with the 2022 model year. That said, the door panels and the dashboard resonate “luxury” with soft-touch material and white contrast stitching for visual treat. The dashboard has a chassis plate number, for exclusivity purposes, and carbon fiber trim because why not?

2022 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 Coupe front seats

The seats are standard Mustang affair as well, with upgraded bolsters and Alcantara for the premium it demands. The support is good and the support on offer is excellent. This can further be aggravated by opting for the optional Recaro sports seats that do miss-out on the driver’s side memory settings but provide a lot of support instead. Functionality-wise, the seats get power-adjustability as well as heating and ventilation. The standard seats also get driver-side memory settings as a part of the Technology package - as seen on the other Mustangs as well. There are rear seats, yes, but are of no use apart from carrying some luggage or a baby seat.

All the cars have negligible rear seats, except the Bimmer, but in the front all of them can seat people rather comfortably. The GT500 has good headroom with impressive shoulder room and the best legroom. In terms of cargo capacity, it might not be much but is nearly 48% better than that of the Camaro. The interior is as comfortable as other Mustangs, with some highlighting features being:

  • Dual-zone climate control
  • Six-way power-adjustable driver's and passenger seats with heating and ventilation
  • Leather and faux suede-wrapped steering wheel
  • Wi-Fi hotspot
  • Push-button hood pins
  • Leather-trimmed seating surfaces
  • Optional driver's seat with three-position memory
  • Optional Recaro sports seat

What’s there to keep you entertained?

The 2022 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 is expected to carry on with the same infotainment system as seen on the 2021 model year, albeit with some improvements aimed at smoother functioning. The 2021 GT500 comes equipped with an 8-inch infotainment screen which has all the modern loadings and equipment one expects from a car of this era. The system supports AM/FM/SiriusXM along with Bluetooth and smartphone mirroring via Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

The standard music system comes as a 9-speaker audio system which is rather underwhelming in terms of volume, considering the racket of an engine up front but upgrading to the 16-speaker Burmester system does make matters a bit audible. Some of the highlights of this system are:

  • 8-inch touchscreen display
  • Android Auto
  • Apple CarPlay
  • Bluetooth
  • 9-speaker audio system
  • Optional 16-speaker Burmester Premium Audio system
  • Optional navigation system

The upgrades on the Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 are prominently displayed, and are expected to remain the same in 2022 as well. The car looks nothing like a normal Coyote-powered Mustang apart from the tail lights and headlights. The front looks menacing with all the vents and aerodynamically-assisted parts along with a big hood that now has scoops to cool the supercharger down. All the aggression is then cemented by a Shelby badge at the centre of the grille.

2022 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 Coupe

To the side, the 20-inch alloy wheels are prominent and the lines have been tweaked for ultimate grip on the track. The body has been widened to accommodate the wider tires and the overall look still looks like a Mustang-on-steroids. The rear has a familiar look but now made more prominent by big exhaust tips and a, rather bold, rear spoiler.

The GT500 looks bold, aggressive, and menacing with all the design elements it carries which also have some or the other function relating to the car not oversteering into anything. The rear spoiler helps keep the rear planted, while the low centre of gravity ensures stability. Proportion-wise, the GT500 is the most compact of all with the smallest wheelbase and shorter length, which aids in handling and also add to the styling which is further highlighted by:

  • 20-inch wheels
  • Adaptive suspension
  • Brembo ultra-high-performance brakes
  • Dual exhaust with quad 4.5-inch exhaust tips
  • Push-button hood pins
  • Rear spoiler
  • Optional heated outside rearview mirrors

2022 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 Coupe Safety

Making the most powerful Mustang doesn;t mean a compromise on safety but rather, it means re-enforcing what’s present to make the driver safer at higher speeds. Following this, the 2022 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 is expected to be as safe as the current model year with an increase in the available driver assistance features, which are rather scarce. Some of the available ones are:

  • Blind-spot monitoring
  • Magnesium engine brace
  • (Optional) Rear cross-traffic alert

2022 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 Vs. 2022 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 1LE

The rivalry between these two cars is the fiercest of all, with none of the cars accepting a lower rank in any of the parameters. Both the cars have tremendous power figures, and know how to put them to the ground properly, but the Chevrolet takes the slightest of edge from the Shelby in acceleration, while also providing better fuel efficiency and a better braking distance. The Shelby gets a bigger cabin, a more engaging supercharger, and bigger trunk space to boast of.

2022 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 1LE

2022 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 Vs. 2022 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat Redeye

The Dodge is a fierce rival as well but mostly in terms of the cabin space. Yes, it has all the power needed to be rushing down the dragstrip but the RWD setup isn’t as efficient as the Shelby’s. Also, the corner-carving capability of the Dodge is nowhere as good as the Shelby due to the heavy weight and lack of aerodynamic aid.

2022 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat Redeye

2022 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 Vs. 2022 BMW M4 Competition

The Bimmer is surely the underdog with a smaller inline-6 under the hood but the performance numbers are as good as, if not better than, the Shelby GT500. The acceleration is similar, so is the braking. The Bimmer takes a sure-shot lead in the fuel-efficiency gains as well, along with a bigger trunk and a similarly roomy cabin. The GT500 has excellent driving figures and instead of being sensible as the German, it prefers to cause drama and noise - just like a muscle car should.

2022 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 Coupe Final Verdict

The 2022 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 will be a potent track vehicle with no second thoughts. It carries the perfect recipe to carve corners and demolish lap times, along with a brawny exhaust note and a lot of supercharger whine. The interiors are expected to be carried on from Mustangs, and the infotainment is anticipated to be similar as well. The fuel economy will not be going up anytime soon, but the ride is expected to be a bit more road-friendly in the city. That said, with all the drama inside-out, the GT500 is perfectly suited for that extrovert who likes to flex his muscles in front of the crowd, and be equally potent to demolish the competition as well.
