Detailed Review

Ford Taurus is has been in production since last two decades. The current, 6th generation is in its eighth year of production. As there are more cars to compete in the premium sedan category, 2018 Ford Taurus is having some hard time.

The standard 3.5L V6 engine delivers an impressive 288 horsepower. If that is less for you, there is a Taurus SHO which is suited for spirited driving with its 3.5L V6 EcoBoost engine. The standard 2.0L engine in the Taurus is capable for daily driving scenarios. Taurus comes with a standard six-speed SelectShift automatic transmission.

Other trims with their pricing and features are listed below.

2017 Ford Taurus Engine

Ford Taurus is powered by a 3.5 Liter Ti-VCT V6 engine that churns out 288 horsepower. This engine won't satisfy your speeding thrills but it is well equipped to take care of your daily driving. All the power is channeled via 6-speed automatic transmission to AWD that powers all the wheels.

The competition seems to be packing some extra power under the hood for that extra price premium. Nissan Maxima produces the segment best- 300 horsepower from its 3.5 Liter engine. And the competition utilizes 8-speed automatic as standard transmission while Ford uses a 6-speed automatic.

Powered by the 3.5L V6, Ford Taurus sedan does a 0-60 mph in 6.5 seconds. The engine is tuned to provide the entirety of its torque output at 4000 rpm. The 6.5 seconds of 0-60 time is something you will find average in this segment.

Owing to its lighter curb weight and more horsepower, the Nissan Maxima S rushes to 60 mph within 5.8 seconds. It is closely followed by Taurus and Cadenza's 6.5 seconds 0-60 mph while the Chrysler 300 is the slowest to reach the 60 mph marker.

Ride and Handling

The ride quality offered by Ford Taurus is comfortable. Taurus is a big luxury sedan and it lives up to its name by offering optimal comfort while riding. Taurus is easily maneuverable at a lower speed while the steering weighs up as the speed increases. Taurus grips very well on the roads and the steering offers good on-center feedback to the driver.

The Ford Taurus comes with the large brake calipers with the size of 13.9 inches at the front and 13.6 inches at rear wheels. The Taurus is expected to perform well in braking.

The competition does manage to pull off good braking performance. Both Kia and Chrysler decelerate from 60 mph to a standstill within 120 feet. The Nissan Maxima S takes 125 feet to achieve a similar feat.

2017 Ford Taurus Fuel Economy

Ford Taurus offers a combined mileage of 21 mpg. These number might upset a few but the naturally aspirated Ti-VCT engine isn't frugal enough to beat the likes of Chrysler 300, Kia Cadenza and Nissan Maxima.

2017 Ford Taurus Interior

The 2017 Ford Taurus' interior features an attractive dual-cowl design that flows seamlessly down into the center stack and console below. The materials quality feels dated compared to that of newer competitors, but the available Sync 3 system offsets that impression by virtue of its large 8-inch central touchscreen and the pair of smaller displays in the instrument cluster. -Edmunds

Seating and Comfort

The Ford Taurus is your standard 5-seater premium sedan with the room for 3 persons at the rear. The comfort for the driver and front passenger is excellent. But things get a little tight on the back. Because if the shorter wheelbase the car doesn't leave much legroom for rear passengers.

Cargo Capacity

The Ford Taurus offers the best in segment rear cargo space of 20.1 cu-ft. The cargo bay can accommodate your bags for long weekend trips without any fuss. Taurus' cargo space is followed by Chrysler's 16.3 cu.-ft., Kia's 16.0 cu.-ft. and Nissan Maxima S' least in segment 14.3 cu.-ft.

2017 Ford Taurus Exterior

The Ford Taurus doesn't attempt to hide its size, but rather make the most of it. With 112 inches between the wheels, it adds more than 80 inches of front and rear overhangs to help it achieve a lower, sleeker profile. That's compounded with sharp exterior lines and defined haunches that aren't unattractive, but they are old now. Compared to other, sleeker full-sizers, the Taurus doesn't cut the same impressive shape it once did. -TheCarConnection

Dimensions and Weight

The Taurus wears a sleek design language. But when we compare Taurus with its competition, we find it is longer, wider and a bit higher than its competition. Taurus is almost 10 inches longer than the Nissan Maxima S. But when it comes to the wheelbase it is 8 inches shorter than the Chrysler. This is one of the major reasons that the rear seats in the Taurus feel too uncomfortable for adult passengers.

2017 Ford Taurus Competition

Ford Taurus Sedan vs Chrysler 300

The Chrysler 300 and Ford Taurus are similar in many aspects. Both of these sedans are similar in size and are powered by a V6 engine. But the Chrysler 300 comes with a 3.6L engine and offers a marginal increase in power.

Ford Taurus Sedan vs Kia Cadenza

Kia's Cadenza is costlier than the Ford but offers similar performance. But the Ford Taurus has been in the production for almost a decade and it has aged significantly. The Cadenza has received a major refresh and comes packed with a lot of standard features. The Cadenza is a better choice if luxury is more important for you.

When things come down to Maxima vs Taurus. The former is lighter, quicker and more powerful. But the Taurus does pack a lot of features on the inside. Taurus get features like Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. It also features Ford's advanced voice-activated SYNC 3 system. And if you decide to go for the SHO trim, then the Taurus packs more horsepower under the hood.

2017 Ford Taurus Final Verdict

Ford's premium sedan, Taurus, for the year 2017 doesn't bring any major changes. It is powered by the previous year's engine. This 3.5 Liter Ti-VCT engine is tuned for 288 hp. The Taurus has been in production for almost a decade and the competition with their newer cars outclass the Taurus.

One thing where the Ford Taurus really shines is its safety. Ford Taurus tops the charts when it comes to safety and that is a major reason for choosing this car. The Taurus has enough cargo space for your shopping trips and those long weekend getaways. The Ford Taurus is a good cruiser. The engine has enough oomph to take care of daily driving requirements.
