In 1965, Ford introduced its Transit van to the American market as the only van in its lineup. It is still one of the most popular cargo vans in America to this day, and it generates a good deal of sales for the automaker. There's no doubt that the 2022 Ford Transit Cargo Van will be the same as its predecessor and will come out later this year. Only one change is in store for this year is the addition of a new electric version with a greater range.

The Ford Transit Cargo Van is available in multiple configurations, and its performance remains unmatched in its segment. In addition, it has a comfortable yet practical cabin. The Transit only has one small problem, which is its lower fuel economy. However, Ford E-Transit will likely be able to address this issue well. With a starting price of $35,270, it will compete with other vans in the market such as the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter, the GMC Savana, and the Nissan NV 200.

The Cargo Van itself is a trim of the Transit lineup which can further be configured in many ways. Firstly, you can choose either an RWD or AWD variant. Next, you can choose the configuration based on your roofline length and payload requirements. In terms of the additional features, we’d recommend opting for the Heavy-Duty Trailer Tow package if you need to tow regularly. Also, the blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert and trailer coverage is a very helpful add-on to the pack as well.

Release Date

As of now, there is no confirmation as to when the cargo van will launch but seeing the past trends, expect the 2022 Ford Transit Cargo Van to hit the dealerships in late 2021 along with the E-Transit, the all-electric van.

2022 Ford Transit Engine and Performance

9.0/10

The 2022 Ford Transit Cargo Van is America's favorite, and one of the reasons is its superior performance. The car has a naturally aspirated 3.5L V6 engine that produces around 275 horsepower and 262 lb-ft of torque. This heavy cargo van can reach 60 MPH in only 7.5 seconds with this amount of power. Ford's engine, on the other hand, is paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission, which is smooth and efficient though you can sometimes hear some noises. Additionally, this cargo van is available with front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive, which is optional.

The towing capacity of the 2022 Ford Transit Cargo Van is rated at 8670 pounds and can reach almost 11,000 pounds depending on the configuration. Again, its payload capacity ranges from 2730 to 5100 pounds, which is quite good. On the whole, the Transit Cargo Van provides enough efficiency to serve your needs. Moreover, it comes with a variety of configurations, so you can easily select the variant that best suits your needs.

2022 Ford Transit Fuel Economy

5.0/10

The 2022 Ford Transit Cargo Van is likely to disappoint you in terms of fuel economy. Across cities, it gives you an MPG rating of 15 miles, while on the highways it drives for 19 miles per gallon. The combined mileage stands at 17 MPG, which isn't the best compared to some rivals. By the way, the cargo van has a large fuel tank size, which will save you the trouble of having to go to the gas station often. All these MPG ratings pertain to the standard V6 engine. There is also an Ecoboost 3.5L V6 engine option that will increase the MPG figures to a certain extent.

The Mercedes-Benz Sprinter, with a combined mileage of around 22 MPG, is the van that performs exceptionally well in this segment. The Transit and GMC Savana have the largest fuel tanks, measuring 31 gallons each.

2022 Ford Transit Interior

8.0/10

The 2022 Ford Transit Cargo Van's cabin can comfortably accommodate two people, including the driver. Just like all of its competitors, the front space is adequate. The Transit Cargo Van cabins are designed to make your journey more comfortable. The vehicle's interior offers many features that are not generally found on such a vehicle, but Ford was able to meet expectations in this section. Its rival Mercedes-Benz Sprinter, on the other hand, is more luxurious and premium.

Floors of this Cargo Van are made from heavy-duty material and are protected by scuff plates. There is yet another layer of protective material on the rear walls of this vehicle. It features power-sliding rear doors, manual air conditioning, ergonomic design, cupholders, and four-way adjustable front seats.

In comparison to other vehicles in its segment, the Ford Transit isn't very large and is very narrow and short. Its wheelbase is also the shortest in its segment. The Nissan NV and Mercedes-Benz Sprinter are both quite large in size, and their wheelbases are very long as well, which is surely beneficial for the segment.

2022 Ford Transit Competition

2022 Ford Transit Cargo Van vs 2021 GMC Savana Cargo Van

The Ford Transit and the GMC Savana are almost identical in terms of specifications. The Transit, however, has better acceleration than the Savana without a doubt. Having optional features is another advantage of the Ford Transit, which makes it a good choice overall. The GMC Savana, on the other hand, is good but due to fewer updates, it looks a bit dated compared to the Ford Transit.

2022 Ford Transit Cargo Van vs 2021 Nissan NV Cargo Van

The Nissan NV Cargo Van is a little different from the Ford Transit. On the NV Cargo van, the front fascia looks more like that of an SUV, which is cool. Additionally, Nissan offers more reliability and slightly higher mileage, which are positive factors. Meanwhile, the Ford Transit is more powerful and features a lot more options. The Transit is also way ahead when it comes to towing and payload capacity, which are major factors to consider when looking at cargo vans.

2022 Ford Transit Cargo Van vs 2021 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Cargo Van

The Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Cargo Van is really a tough competitor to the Ford Transit. In its segment, the Sprinter has one of the best fuel economy scores, it is nearly 5 MPG higher than the Transit. The Merc Sprinter is also luxurious and very close in performance to the Ford. Sprinter's cargo capacity is again significantly greater than Transit's in its base configuration. The Merc Sprinter easily defeats the Transit Cargo Van in this case.

2022 Ford Transit Final Verdict

You should consider the 2022 Ford Transit Cargo Van for carrying out your business work with ease. The van is built with lots of practicality, as one would expect from a cargo van. It also appears to provide adequate power for its segment as well as excellent comfort on the inside. In addition, the Transit will come in multiple configurations, allowing you to choose the roof length, towing capacity, payload capacity, and the wheelbase you require. It's only drawback is its sub-par fuel economy, which can be mitigated to some extent by choosing the Ecoboost engine. If Ford's MPG ratings don't meet your expectations, you can still consider the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter, which offers better fuel economy and cargo space.
