Expert Review, Pricing Analysis and Buying Guide

Ford basically offers two different models, the base passenger van is named Ford Transit 150, However, if you want better payload capacity, the Transit 350 is the ideal pick among the two. Moreover, Ford also offers two different engine options to choose from starting with a standard 3.5-liter V6 engine to an optional turbocharged 3.5 liter V6 which is more punchy throughout the rev range. When it comes to rivalry, it faces strong competition from vans like the Chevrolet Express 2500 Passenger Van, GMC Savana 2500 Passenger Van, and Nissan NV Passenger Van.

2021 Ford Transit Passenger Van Features

The Ford Escape is offered in 2 different trim levels XL and XLT. Both these trims come with a high roof version as well. Ford retains all the interior and exterior styling elements. It now gets an electronic parking brake as standard for the 2022 model year. The Transit offers two engine options as well. The base trim starts at $41,695 and goes up to $43,530 for the XLT trim. As standard, it comes with features like a Tire pressure monitoring system, Rearview camera, Lane-keeping alert with driver alert, Rain-sensing wipers, 4-inch audio display, Sliding passenger-side door, and Easy-to-clean vinyl flooring. The other significant features of both the trims are given below.

Which Trim should you buy?

The XLT trim is the one that makes the most sense here and also not very expensive when compared to the base trim. As you can see the base trim offers plenty of modern features. However, the XLT trim is a notch better than the base trim in every way. Additionally, it offers standard features like Foglights, Full-length carpeting, an Upgraded infotainment system with Ford's Sync 3 software, Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert and trailer coverage, and Parking sensors. Ford also provides additional packages include Livery package, Builders Prep package, and Heavy-Duty Trailer Tow package

2021 Ford Transit Passenger Van Engine and Performance

Usually, all the vans in the segment get a massive V6 engine and the Ford Transit Passenger Van gets two engine options. The base engine is a 3.5 liter V6 upfront that generated 275 hp @ 6,500 rpm and a torque of 262 lb-ft @ 3,750 RPM which is quite sufficient for a family van, but if that doesn’t satisfy your needs. You can also opt for a more powerful 3.5 Liter turbocharged V6 engine that churns out a whopping 310 hp and 400 lb-ft of tremendous torque.

Both these engines come mated to a 10-speed transmission and a rear-wheel-drive option as standard. Moreover, it also gets an optional all-wheel-drive option which makes it easier to drive on rugged terrains. Talking about the performance numbers, it is capable of hitting 0-60 mph in 7.7 seconds which is absolutely astonishing, and does a quarter-mile run in 15.9 seconds. However, the top speed has not been revealed officially by the automaker. The optional turbocharged V6 engine clearly delivers better performance figures than the base engine.

The Ford Escape may lose out to the other vans in terms of brake size and fuel capacity, but the Transit proves its mettle in the speed charts. In the 0-60 mph run, the Ford Transit’s 7.7 seconds timeout parallels all the other counterparts. While both GM twins outclass the 2021 Nissan NV Passenger Van in terms of power and performance numbers which has a 0-60 mph time of 8.4 seconds. Nevertheless, the top speed of all these vans is not specified as these vans are focused mainly on practicality and versatility rather than performance.

How well does the 2021 Ford Transit Passenger Van handle?

The Ford Escape incorporates some modern gimmicks such as an Electric Power Assisted Steering which provides better handling comparatively. The suspension used in the front is an Independent MacPherson-strut with Stabilizer Bar that considerably reduces the body roll while driving in tight corners. In the rear, it gets a Heavy-duty Gas Shock Absorbers leaf spring suspension which offers a relatively comfortable ride quality overall.

On top of that, it also comes with some modern techs to offer a decent ride quality despite being able to seat 12 passengers. To start with, it gets a Side Wind Stabilization feature that stabilizes the body roll during heavy winds which is quite an impressive feature. Also, it comes with AdvanceTrac With Roll Stability control and comes with 16-inch alloy wheels with decently wide tires that add to the handling of the van.

2021 Ford Transit Passenger Van Braking Performance

Usually, the automakers don’t test the braking performance of a Passenger Van. However, let's check out the brake specifications. It gets a 12.1 inches rotor on each side. With a curb weight of 5621 lbs, it turns out to be the lightest van in the segment. Hence we believe that the braking performance might be better or on par with the segment. Additionally, it also offers some modern features that enhance braking. It has Automatic emergency braking and ABS as standard.

Since All the automakers haven’t provided the official performance figures, there is no scope for comparing the braking performance. Nevertheless, we have the specs of the brake which gives you an insight into its braking performance. The car with the largest brake here is the Nissan NV Passenger Van which measures 14.2 inches in the front and 14.4 inches in the rear. However, with its heftiness, the braking might not be so good. The GM twins, on the other hand, have similar sized front and rear brakes of 12.8 inches and 13 inches respectively.

2021 Ford Transit Passenger Van Fuel Economy

Speaking of fuel economy, the EPA will not give ratings to vans of this size as they fall under a different category because of their size. However, we have the size of the fuel tank which measures 25 gallons. Sadly, it happens to be the least voluminous tank in its segment. Considering its weight, it tends to offer more fuel economy than the other vans in the segment. Due to the absence of fuel figures, we couldn’t figure out its driving range.

Next in line is the Nissan NV Passenger Van which has a 28-gallon fuel tank. The Ford comes at the last with the smallest tank of 25 gallons which would most likely affect its driving range. However, we don’t have the official mileage figures of any of these vans.

2021 Ford Transit Passenger Van Interior

Unlike the other Vans in the segment, Ford takes a different approach in terms of interior. It is easily the best-looking interior in this class. They have brought some modern elements that they use in cars into this Van. It looks premium and top-notch. The fit and finish levels are way better and ahead of its rivals. The dashboard has a clean yet stylish design. The AC vents are large which means you get an airy cabin. The steering wheel looks very modern and fresh, more like a steering wheel of a modern Ford hatchback.

The Gear Knob is placed right under the center console which makes it easy to reach for the driver. Moreover, it comes with two cup holders in the front. The center console is well laid out with some nicely finished buttons. Moving on to the interior dimensions, it has a very spacious cabin that can fit 12 passengers with utmost comfort and first-class ergonomics. It also has a generous cargo capacity of 39.1 cubic feet.

However, all these Vans offer similarly sized cabins with very minute differences. Both GM twins boast the highest shoulder room of 68.9 inches. The Nissan Passenger loses out to the Ford Transit in terms of cargo space which measures 28.9 cubic feet. Some of the standout and optional interior features include:

  • Vinyl flooring
  • Manual tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel
  • Power windows, locks, and mirrors
  • Full-length carpeting
  • Steering wheel controls

What’s there to keep you entertained?

Ford has curated the infotainment system very well for a Van. The base XL model itself offers essential infotainment features such as a 4-inch audio display, Bluetooth phone, and audio connectivity, Four-speaker stereo, and Two USB ports. When you go for the XLT trim, you will get an Upgraded infotainment system with Ford's Sync 3 software and an available 8-inch infotainment touchscreen. Some of the standout infotainment features include:

  • 8 Speakers
  • AM/FM Stereo
  • Front and Rear Split-View Camera
  • USB Ports – 5 Amps
  • Two Auxiliary 12V PowerPoints
  • FordPass Connect

2021 Ford Transit Passenger Van Exterior

Like every other aspect, Ford has gone modern with the exterior design cues. The front profile gets a huge front grille surrounded by chrome. You can also have a black front grille which looks even better. The XLT trim comes with Bi-Xenon headlights and the front bumper gets foglights as well. Altogether, the front fascia looks like it's grinning. The side mirror also gets indicators. The taillights are long and sleek and blend in with the rear edges of the Van.

On the upside, it is the lightest Van in its segment which weighs only 5621 lbs. On the dimensions front, it measures a length of 235.5 inches and turns out to be the widest van which measures 81.3 inches. It also sports a wheelbase of 129.9 inches which happens to be the shortest wheelbase which delivers better performance and handling owing to its lighter power to weight ratio comparatively. Sadly, the ground clearance is unspecified.

The medium roof version gets a 3 star rating and the high roof version with an extended wheel base also gets a 3-star rating. 2021 Ford Transit Passenger Van Competition

2021 Ford Transit Passenger Van Vs 2021 Chevrolet Express 2500 Passenger Van:

The Chevrolet Express has a very long history in the full-size van segment and it still retains the same design and interior elements for a decade now. While the Ford Transit’s new generation is their first take on bringing modern elements to a family van. Having said that, the Fords seems to perform better in every way and we highly recommend it.

2021 Ford Transit Passenger Van Vs 2021 GMC Savana 2500 Passenger Van:

The GMC Savana 2500 Passenger Van is the twin sibling of the Chevrolet Express Van which means it has become old school for today’s standards. The Ford offers a better interior with better comfort, better performance, and a stylish-looking exterior. However, the place where the GMC Savana shines is the Fuel tank capacity which is considerably larger than the Ford. Ford again stands as a better van here as well.

2021 Ford Transit Passenger Van Vs 2021 Nissan NV Passenger Van:

The Nissan NV is one among the very few Japanese vans in this segment to offer decent comfort and a considerably bigger cabin. However, it clearly gets smoked by the Ford Transit in terms of performance and driving dynamics. On the upside, it is quite cheaper than the Ford. In a nutshell, Ford Transit is worth putting extra money on. If you want a very affordable van with essential features, then the Nissan would satisfy your needs.

2021 Ford Transit Passenger Van Final Verdict

As you can see, Ford Transit clearly outshines and dominates all its competitors in every aspect which makes it sustaining in the market for decades now. It looks appealing and competitive to the more expensive German Vans. The sections where it falls short are fuel tank capacity and safety which might definitely improve with the next generation models. In conclusion, the RAM delivers everything a little more than what its rivals offer and takes the full-size van market by storm.
