Expert Review, Pricing Analysis and Buying Guide

The Genesis G70 kicks things off the luxury line-up of Genesis. The 2022 G70 will come with a new design and some interior tweaks. The 2022 Genesis G70 starts at a price of $38,570 and can be booked from their website. It is a small sedan but it gets the job done very well. Luxury is plenty and the new look thoroughly defines that. The G70 also has made some changes to make it more competitive and put up an interesting fight amongst its other luxury rivals like Jaguar XE, Lexus IS 300, and BMW 3-Series.

2022 Genesis G70 Features

The 2022 Genesis G70 will be available in six trims. The lineup adds a limited-run Launch Edition for the 2022 model year. The pricing starts at $38,570 for the base Standard 2.0T trim and goes up to $53,545 for the topmost Launch Edition trim. The Launch Edition will be getting a 3.3-liter twin-turbo V6 engine with either RWD or AWD. The 2.0T trims get a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-4 engine while the 3.3T gets the 3.3-liter twin-turbo V6 engine. All the trims are RWD as standard while AWD can be added by paying $2,000 extra.

We Recommend

There is no denying the fact the 3.3-liter equipped V6 trims are the most sought after here. Thus we recommend going for the Standard 3.3T trim at least to get a better engine and more standard features like heated and ventilated front seats, power-adjustable steering column, Lexicon premium surround system, etc.

Price

The 2022 Genesis G70 will be priced $1,500 higher than the price of the current base trim. Including destination charges, the new G70 will start at around $38,570 and will go up to $51,445 for the top trim while the 500 units only limited-run Launch Edition trim will be priced at $53,545.

Release date

Genesis has confirmed that the new G70 will be hitting dealerships in the summer of 2021. You can already reserve and pre-order your Genesis G70 at their official website. You can also pre-order the G70 Launch Edition if you book it right now.

2022 Genesis G70 Engine and Performance

The G70 will come with two engine options, carried over from the 2021 model, as there will be no changes in the upcoming model’s powertrains. The base engine is a 2.0L turbocharged inline-4 capable of spitting out 252 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque. Coupled with an eight-speed automatic, the power is transferred via Rear-Wheel Drive which comes standard. You can also upgrade to All Wheel Drive for some extra cash. The other engine is the 3.3L twin-turbocharged V6, which churns out a massive 365 horses and 376 lb-ft of torque. This also comes as an RWD standard, but you always have the option to upgrade to the AWD. It is also paired with the same eight-speed automatic.

The base engine is sluggish and not very athletic. It does not go with the G70’s style and approach. The acceleration is nothing spectacular with the 2.0-liter powered G70 doing a 0-60 mph in 6.2 seconds. The twin-turbo engine changes all of that. It is pretty powerful and can blast from 0-60 mph in a mere 4.7 seconds, which is a pretty powerful figure for a luxury sedan. The BMW 3-Series is fastest with 0-60 mph coming in just 5.6 seconds followed by Jaguar XE doing 0-60 mph in 6.5 seconds.

The handling and driving dynamics would impress anyone for what it's worth, the G70 has sharp steering and minimal body roll around corners. The ride is also quite smooth and comfortable, thanks to the adaptive dampers performing gracefully. It also has multiple drive modes and the transmission can keep up with your demands. While the RWD is well balanced for all kinds of roads the AWD can be had to improve the driving dynamics on challenging road conditions.

All the luxury sedans are quite evenly matched in terms of power delivery. The Lexus falls a little behind the pack, but only by a slight margin. The BMW 3-Series comes out with the best power delivery, albeit slightly more than the G70. Overall, even in terms of acceleration, the cars are more or less evenly matched; with only the 3-Series being a tad bit quicker than the rest.

2022 Genesis G70 Fuel Economy

The powertrains are not going to change, so the 2022 G70 will also boast a similar fuel economy as the current model year. The G70’s base engine equipped with RWD will offer around 22/30 MPG for city/highway driving and around 25 MPG for combined driving. The AWD results in a slight decrease, as the AWD G70 returns 20/27/23 MPG for city/highway/combined driving respectively.

The twin-turbo engine sips more fuel and returns 17/26/20 MPG for city/highway/combined driving. The AWD version gets similar, but around 17/25/20 MPG for city/highway/combined driving respectively. The G70 gets a 15.8-gallon fuel tank which offers 395 miles of combined range.

As for the rivals, the Lexus IS 300 and the Genesis G70 offer the lowest fuel economy, but the Lexus beats the G70 in terms of range, owing to its bigger fuel tank of 17.4-gallon compared to G70’s 15.8-gallon fuel tank. The BMW 3-Series on the other hand offers the best fuel economy of 26/36/30 mpg in city/highway/combined respectively. Next comes Jaguar XE with 25/34/28 mpg of fuel economy. After Lexus, only Jaguar XE has a bigger 16.6-gallon fuel tank which helps it give 464 miles of combined range.

2022 Genesis G70 Interior

The G70 presents its occupants with a neat and very luxurious interior. The cabin is upscale and fitted with luxurious materials everywhere. Genesis has also done a great job in designing the interior. The dashboard looks modern and satisfies the aristocrat in you. The infotainment screen sticks out from the center of the dashboard and directly below it are the AC vents and the climate control buttons and dials. The passenger’s side of the dash is covered in smooth leather trim customized to your needs. Build quality is excellent. The quilted stitching pattern is done to perfection and enhances the luxury quotient of the car.

As standard, you get full leather seats with gorgeous trims and a sporty appeal to them. The base version features a 12-way power adjustable driver seat with 4-way power lumbar support. The passenger’s seat is also 8-way power-adjustable. The higher trim comes with heated and ventilated front seats with a 16-way power-adjustable driver seat with 4-way power lumbar support, power side bolsters, and cushion extension. It also comes with a 12-way power passenger seat w/ 4-way lumbar support. A leather-wrapped steering wheel with manual tilt and telescoping makes finding the perfect driving position an easy task. Space is also not an issue in the front row, but in the rear row, legroom can be a bit tight.

The front row is quite spacious for all of the sedans, but when it comes to the rear row, all of them are cramped except for Jaguar XE and BMW 3-Series. Out of the other two, the Lexus IS300 has the smallest room at the back, while the other offers some sort of relief to its occupants. Coming to the cargo area the G70 has the smallest 10.5 cubic feet of cargo space. The BMW 3-Series sports the biggest cargo of 13 cubic feet followed by Jaguar XE with 12.5-cubic feet of cargo space.

The infotainment system also offers a 10.3” standard screen across models, with a host of useful standard features. Some of them include Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, SiriusXM radio, HD radio, HD Traffic, Genesis Connected Services Internet Access, USB ports, 15 high-efficiency speakers with Quantum Logic surround sound, Clari-Fi music restoration, etc. The system is easy to use and mostly intuitive. Highlights of the infotainment system include:

  • 10.3-inch touchscreen
  • Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
  • AM/FM/SiriusXM/HD Radio
  • Bluetooth hands-free phone system
  • Wireless charging pad
  • USB ports and AUX input jack

2022 Genesis G70 Exterior

The biggest change coming to the 2022 Genesis G70 is the way it will look. Genesis has designed a new, modern, and more opulent design at the front. The grille is now of a different shape than the outgoing model. The outlines meet at a sharp angle at the lower end of the grille and below it is another grille. The sides also have big vents at the bottom. Also, the headlights have been changed and now it is split into two parts. The two parts are symmetrical to each other and look very unique. Both the headlights are sleek and mirror each other perfectly.

Also, the hood has strong creases. The sides of the Genesis capture its essence, with a strong muscular line flowing through the doors. The rear end has also been changed to fit the style and the taillights also received a little upgrade. The car looks sleek and long from the sides, and the lower ground clearance gives it a distinctly sporty feel.

The dimensions of all the sedans are more or less in the same ballpark. Speaking of which the Genesis G70 is 184.4-inches long, 72.8-inches wide, 55.1-inches in height, and has a 111.6-inches wheelbase. The Jaguar XE is the widest with 5.4-inches wider than the G70. While the BMW 3-Series is the longest with 1.3-inches more length compared to the G70. The BMW 3-Series has the longest wheelbase that is 0.6-inches more than the G70’s wheelbase. Some exterior features of the Genesis G70 are:

2022 Genesis G70 Safety

The Genesis G70 will be redesigned. But that doesn’t mean it will use a completely different chassis. The scores from 2021 G70 will be reflected in the 2022 model year, albeit there might be some differences. The 2021 model got a Top Safety Pick+ from IIHS and performed excellently in all tests and got a maximum rating of ‘Good’. Though there might be some minor differences, we expect the scores to be mostly similar and the new G70 to be an excellently safe car. Some standard safety features are:

  • Electronic Stability Control (ESC)
  • Genesis Connected Services Emergency SOS
  • Blind Spot Detection
  • Forward Collision Mitigation and Rear Cross Traffic Alert
  • Lane Keeping Assist
  • Lane Departure Warning
  • Parking Distance warning front and rear parking sensors
  • Restricted driving mode
  • Dual-stage airbags

2022 Genesis G70 Competition

2022 Genesis G70 vs 2021 Jaguar XE

The Jaguar XE is quite a compelling luxurious sedan, but the Genesis G70 just has that extra edge when it comes to luxury. The interior is more well-refined, making Genesis stand out. The performance is the same on both the cars, but the G70 is just a tad bit faster. The Jaguar gets the upper hand when it comes to fuel economy and range, as it easily beats the G70. The Jaguar also has better in-cabin storage. Overall, both are very good cars in their own rights but Jaguar’s reliability harms its reputation and the Genesis is a better choice overall.

2022 Genesis G70 vs 2021Lexus IS 300

The Lexus IS 300 is a car that looks quite stunning, but the new Genesis G70 gives it a tough competition. Beauty is subjective and we will leave it up to you to decide. But the Genesis G70 has the edge when it comes to performance, albeit not by much. The Lexus IS 300 has the upper hand when it comes to fuel economy, but suffers from less interior space. Once again, Genesis G70 seems to have a slight advantage but Lexus IS 300 has that “Lexus” reliability to make it a compelling choice.

2022 Genesis G70 vs 2021 BMW 3-series

Right off the bat, the BMW 3-series has a better engine and has quicker acceleration. It also handles quite well and has an excellent fuel economy. The interior quality also offers tough competition to the Genesis G70 and the BMW 3-Series has more interior space overall. All in all, the BMW 3-series is the toughest competitor to the Genesis G70 and seems to have that edge over it. After all, the BMW 3-Series is still the king in the segment.

2022 Genesis G70 Final Verdict

The 2022 Genesis G70 will have a new design upgrade that most people will find attractive. The interior tweaks and the standard infotainment screen will only add to its charm. The G70 is luxurious, upscale, and has everything to offer for someone looking into the segment. It is quick, fun to drive, it has decent fuel economy, practicality, and is luxurious at the same time. Overall, a great choice for you if you are in the market for a luxury sedan.
