2022 Genesis GV80 User Complaints and Problems
Hyundai has evolved into one of the favorite brands of the general public in the United States. They were once a manufacturer of economy cars and made their profits on the cheapest automobiles that you can find in the market. However, they learned a lot in this attempt and branched out to provide better value for money in nearly every category it competed in.
From then on, the journey of this brand in the United States is quite an inspiring story. They established a stronghold in the market by emphasizing excellent warranty terms and proving that their cars are not just value for money but also extremely dependable. Hence, expectations were similar when Genesis started back in 2015. The truth is that these cars didn’t score very high in terms of dependability. The brand has made attempts to improve on that and the results are evident.
Luxury cars have always required a huge commitment from the owner to maintain and consequently, target a segmented audience. Hence, reliability is one of the biggest questions we should address when reviewing cars like this. Arguably, there are many ways to gauge how reliable a car is but one of the most sure-shot ways is to identify what customers have been saying about it. This gives us data from the real world, in an unbiased manner.
To understand this, our dependence is on the NHTSA, an organization that records customer complaints and organizes recall campaigns. We take into account the problems encountered in this particular generation by customers and make our assumptions based on that since comparing a car with its previous generation is not a good measure of reliability. For the GV80, the current one is the first generation and hence, this is not a problem. Take a look at Genesis GV80 issues below.
Mechanical problems:
- One owner has stated that although the car is brand-new, it has had its check engine light come on for the third time. It was taken to the dealership all three times but there has been no fix yet.
- Many other owners have experienced problems with the check engine lights and other warning signs associated with the engine. In all cases, the dealership is not able to identify the cause of the failure or fix the issue completely. What is worrying is that some cars have turned up with this problem even within a month after purchase.
- One owner has stated that the vehicle becomes unstable and unpredictable when it has to deal with obstacles or bumps in the middle of the road. The owner has also complained that the suspension rattles on the left side upon restarting during idle.
Safety problems:
- One owner reported that the forward-collision warning system failed to activate. Although the cars are sold with the option, it is not shown on settings and is not usable.

The 2022 Genesis GV80 has not reported any complaints yet. However, this is only a matter of time because the car will surely have complaints as the owners report these only after a while of using the car. Other than this, the only other model year we have is the 2021 model and hence, all the complaints are from that model. The number is low but we see that there is a common issue of the check engine light coming on early. Let us take a look at the recalls and find out if Hyundai has tried to fix them.
2022 Genesis GV80 Recalls
No car has a spotless reputation when it comes to customer complaints and a machine that is built with as many moving parts as a car will have several problem areas. Hence, our expectation is not that the car should be free of any problems but that it should be fixable. And that the manufacturer has understood that they have responsibility for their latest creations.
Being part of a platform that is shared between several brands, the expectation is higher on a car such as the GV80. This car is the flagship of the Genesis brand and is supposed to build the reputation of the entire manufacturer. As such, the number of complaints is low but we have identified a common problem area that comes under GV80 engine problems. This needs to be addressed by the manufacturer to retain its good reputation.
This issue is forgivable because 2021 was the debut model year of the car. Every model has to fix one thing or the other before it gets introduced properly into a market and this is characteristic of every car. Let us take a look at the recalls the history of the said car below. This will give us a picture of how keen the brand is to give customers a trouble-free ownership experience.

Genesis has issued a few recalls over the years but some of the graver problems that users have encountered have been addressed. The problem with the check engine light coming on was linked to a fuel leak issue in many cases according to owners and the manufacturer has responded with a recall in that area. We feel that the manufacturer has taken all the right steps to address the Genesis GV80 engine problems.
Which model year of the Genesis GV80 should you avoid?
The current generation of the Genesis GV80 is one of the latest cars to enter our market. Ever since its introduction as the 2021 Genesis GV80, this car has had good sales numbers as well. To be honest, it is too early to comment on the long-term reliability of this car since owners will only encounter problems as they go. The earliest examples being less than two years old does not give us anything worthwhile to comment on.
Hence, we are not going to advise you to avoid any particular year. In fact, for most cars, the most troublesome model year will be the debut. And even in 2021, we’re happy to report that the Genesis GV80 has been quite reliable and had very few customer complaints. We can see that the brand treats this car like a true flagship should be treated and does all the right things to get it running without trouble.
Should you buy the 2022 Genesis GV80?
The Genesis GV80 is quite an irresistible package in terms of what it offers to budget-conscious luxury car buyers. However, coming from the Korean brand, the SUV has a lot to prove in terms of its quality to establish itself as a worthy option for families. It also has to make a case for itself in terms of reliability. We’re very glad to report that this car has lived up to that reputation and come out of the reliability test with flying colors. All of the reasons combined, it is a car we would recommend that you buy in 2022.
