If you are someone who wants a commercially capable van or a big family hauler, then you are invited to take a look at GMC’s trusted Savana 2500 which has hardly gone through any change since its launch. The van can hold up to 12 passengers without any problem and does offer decent practicality. It is built on a ladder-frame chassis like some other GMC trucks and is sturdy as well.

However, it is dated when it comes to exterior styling, interior design, modern safety features, and electronics, which some of its competitors have on offer. Currently, it competes with a few of the vans available in the US market, and they are the 2022 Ford Transit, 2022 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter, and 2022 Chevrolet Express. Continue with the article to know how it performs in front of other giants in the segment.

2022 GMC Savana 2500 Passenger Van Features

The 2022 Savana 2500 is expected to come in just two trims- LS and LT. The styling will be unchanged too, and just like the current model, the base LS will look and feel basic too. It will come with very limited features like the dual-zone climate control, rearview camera, vinyl seats, manually adjustable driver seat, etc, and will be priced around $38,800. The higher LT trim will pack similar features as the former with a few extras like premium cloth seats, rear heating unit, etc, and will be about $2,000 more expensive than the LS. GMC will offer numerous optional extras to make the experience even better.

Which trim should you buy?

The LT trim is a more favorable option between the two. The LT trim offers a better cabin feel and comes with added safety features as well. It gets many features like remote keyless entry, carpeted floor covering, cloth seats, cruise control, driver convenience package, and many more. So the additional cost is justified with the features on offer. If your needs are purely commercial, then you can opt for the LS trim.

Release Date

The 2022 GMC Savana 2500 is expected to follow the regular GM model year rollover sequence and will be launched in the third quarter of 2021.

2022 GMC Savana 2500 Passenger Van Engine and Performance

8.0/10

As standard, the 2022 Savana will get a 4.3-liter naturally aspirated V6 engine which has been a part of the Savana since its launch in the late 90s. It belts out 276 horsepower and 298 pound-feet of maximum torque. It will be mated to an 8-speed shiftable automatic transmission system and drives through the rear wheels. Apart from the standard V6, there will be a 6.6-liter naturally aspirated V8, which replaces the old 6.0-liter counterpart.

2022 GMC Savana 2500 Passenger Van side view

The 6.6L engine churns out an impressive 401 horsepower and 464 pound-feet of torque. You can also opt for a 2.8L diesel engine as well which is mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission. The Savana 2500 may take up to 8.4 seconds for 60 miles an hour and complete a quarter-mile in 16.8 seconds with the standard V6 engine. With the other powerful engine, the Savana should take off in less time, but the differences are not huge.

* Expected, 2021 data used for reference

It is quite evident that Savana’s body-on-frame platform is best for utility, and cornering with it is not possible anyway. The Savana does have a lot of body roll and offers a very bouncy ride quality over rough roads. The steering feels light and does help in taking sharp turns with ease, but in a straight line, the driver has to be extra cautious about keeping the van in the right direction. We expect better NVH with some modifications for the 2022 model.

The GM twins offer higher torque, and that helps both of them to get to the top in acceleration tests. The Ford comes next-in-line with lower torque than the former and accelerates much slower than the GM twins. The Sprinter stands last with its underpowered engine and does prove sluggish with performance. When comparing the price tag, the sluggish Mercedes is the most expensive option.

2022 GMC Savana 2500 Passenger Van Fuel Economy

8.0/10

Usually, commercial vans used for hauling passengers or cargo do not get economy ratings by the EPA, and the Savana 2500 suffers the same fate. However, as reported by some users of the 2021 model, the 2022 model is expected to deliver 11 mpg in the city, 16 mpg on the highway, and 13 mpg in mixed driving conditions. With a fuel tank capacity of 31 gallons, it can travel up to 341 miles in the city, 496 miles on the highway, and 403 miles in combined driving conditions.

The GM twins offer similar fuel efficiency figures and are equipped with large 31-gallon fuel tanks. The Merc is expected to deliver a slightly better economy because of its smaller turbocharged engine and lower output than the competition. The Merc and Ford pack a smaller gas tank compared to the GM twins, however, the latter offers a better overall tank range due to its bigger engine than the Merc.

2022 GMC Savana 2500 Passenger Van Interior

9.0/10

The interior of the 2022 Savana 2500 passenger van will be similar to other vans in the competition and be filled with hard plastics and unexciting materials to make it more affordable. The cabin will be spacious, which is quite normal for a passenger van and can haul up to 12 people at the same time. The dashboard is all plastic and has a boxy appearance. The center comes occupied with the audio player and climate control knobs, and the left has the truck-styled steering wheel which can be upgraded to an optional leather-covered one.

2022 GMC Savana 2500 Passenger Van seats

The seats will be offered in vinyl as standard and offer acceptable cushioning till the rear row. As you move to the LT trim, you’ll get cloth-trimmed seats. The cabin will be evenly spaced out with ample head, shoulder, and legroom till the fourth row for even taller individuals. The cargo capacity on offer with all the seats down behind the first row will be a whopping 218.5 cubic feet, and you can easily pack all the stuff of all passengers with ease.

All four vans offer very similar cabin space, with the Ford offering a slightly better headroom. The Merc has no details regarding the interior dimensions. However, both the GMC and Chevy offer a balanced cabin with adequate headroom and legroom till the fourth row. In terms of standard cargo capacity, the GM twins blow the competition away. Some of the standout interior features worth mentioning are :

  • Leather-covered steering wheel (Optional)
  • 6-way power-adjustable front seats (Optional)
  • Dual illuminated passenger vanity mirrors
  • Front cupholders
  • Cruise control
  • Rearview camera
  • Tilt-adjustable steering wheel (LT)

What’s there to keep you entertained?

The infotainment system on the 2022 Savana will be equipped with no infotainment screen as standard and comes with features like an AM/FM stereo with MP3 player, 2-speaker audio system, auxiliary audio input, and HD radio. If you want an infotainment system with additional features, then you’ll have to consider the communication package that will include satellite radio, Bluetooth connectivity, OnStar system, steering mounted controls, etc. Some of the standout infotainment features are:

  • 2-speaker audio system
  • Auxiliary audio input
  • AM/FM stereo with MP3 player
  • Satellite radio (Optional)
  • OnStar (Optional)
  • Bluetooth and USB connectivity (Optional)
  • Steering mounted controls

2022 GMC Savana 2500 Passenger Van Exterior

8.0/10

It is hard to believe that other body-on-frame chassis holding trucks from GMC are getting better with more muscular looks, but the Savana remains the same just like it was in the late 90s. Even for the 2022 model, the exterior styling will be the same. The front has dual halogen composite headlamps with bulb indicators which offer poor night visibility according to today’s standards. The sides are rather left minimalistic with no design changes. The rear has a door for rear entry and exits, and the taillights are placed vertically quite up. The LT trim gets some visual treatment in the form of a Chrome Appearance package

2022 GMC Savana 2500 Passenger Van

The van comes with 16-inch steel wheels as standard. The dimensions of the van are quite compact if compared with the competition, but it has a hefty curb weight, 5,991 pounds to be exact. Apart from that, the van is 224 inches long, 79.3 inches wide, 84.5 inches tall, and has a wheelbase of 135.2 inches long. It also has an 8.6 inches of high ground clearance for tackling bad patches on the road while traveling.

In terms of overall looks, the Merc steals the show with its more up-to-date design and a higher premium appeal. Apart from that, the GMC and Chevy are the same in their dimensions and are quite compact compared to the Ford Transit and Mercedes-Benz Sprinter. The latter options have a longer wheelbase, better height, and length. Some of the standout exterior features are:

  • 16-inch painted steel wheels.
  • Electric rear window defogger. (Optional)
  • Passenger side sliding door. (Optional)
  • Dual halogen composite headlamps
  • Enhanced technology glass
  • Solar ray deep-tinted glass

2022 GMC Savana 2500 Passenger Van Safety

8.0/10

Similar to some other minivans in the competition, the Savana passenger van did not get tested thoroughly by the safety agencies, but as years have passed, the build quality has been pretty good to withstand collision and does offer a few safety features like stability control, 4-wheel ABS, a post-collision safety system, and front, and side-mounted airbags as standard. With the LT trim, features like lane departure warning, forward collision alert, and anti-theft alarm system get added to the standard list of features. Some of the standout safety features are as follows:

  • Lane departure warning accident avoidance system.
  • Post-collision safety system.
  • Stability control.
  • 4-wheel ABS with traction control.
  • Passenger airbag deactivation switch.
  • Tire pressure monitoring.
  • Remote anti-theft alarm system.
  • Forward collision alert

2022 GMC Savana 2500 Passenger Van Competition

9.0/10

2022 GMC Savana 2500 Passenger Van vs 2022 Ford Transit Passenger Van.

The Ford Transit is a better-looking passenger van for sure. It also comes with a better-designed interior and many different configurations like different roof heights, extended wheelbase, and longer body options. The GMC Savana is an old-school passenger van that does its duty well, but you should not expect any modern features in its cabin. However, it offers class-leading cargo capacity in comparison to the Ford Transit. We would opt for the Ford Transit passenger van owing to better interior and exterior features.

2022 Ford Transit Passenger Van.

2022 GMC Savana 2500 Passenger Van vs 2022 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Passenger Van.

The Mercedes-Benz Sprinter is a better van if you are looking for a feature-rich and premium passenger van. It also offers a better design language with a future-proof cabin and has loads of safety features on offer. The comfort offered by the Sprinter is way higher than that found on the Savana. However, it is more expensive than the Savana. On the other hand, the GMC Savana 2500 offers better performance and a better tank range than its German counterpart. It also comes way cheaper, making it more accessible to the masses.

2022 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Passenger Van.

2022 GMC Savana 2500 Passenger Van vs 2022 Chevrolet Express 2500 Passenger Van.

Belonging to the same parent company, both the GMC Savana and Chevy Express share the same chassis, engine cabin dimensions, and a lot of other things. But the Chevrolet Express 2500 is cheaper than the GMC Savana 2500. Between the two, the Chevy would be the one to go for if you don’t want to shell out extra cash.

2022 GMC Savana 2500 Passenger Van Final Verdict

For the price range, the 2022 Savana 2500 passenger van ticks most of the right boxes but does look old and unrefined compared to the ones from Ford and Mercedes-Benz. However, the Savana 2500 has the power to be your reliable workhorse and fulfill your hauling or towing needs. It offers good interior space and class-leading cargo capacity as well. If you are planning to buy one, then the Chevy Express 2500 would be a wiser choice as the feature lists and other mechanics are just the same but costs lower. You can also have a look at some other options in the market.
