Expert Review

carhp editor October 8, 2018

When you need to carry a large number of people around or when you need to transport goods and luggage, a full-size van is the best option. The GMC Savana Passenger from General Motors is one of the few vehicles in the market that can carry a good number of people around and at the same time can accommodate their luggage. The GMC Savana Passenger is a van that is only built for this purpose and is a very basic vehicle.

The GMC Savana comes with an inline 6 cylinder engine that churns out 276 horsepower. The engine is mated to an 8-speed automatic gearbox. Priced at $34,710, the Savana is the most affordable van in the segment.

The Savana is a very frugal vehicle and yet is one of the best selling vehicles in the segment. The GMC Savana Passenger and the Chevrolet Express that are based on the same platform, currently hold 44.8% of full-size van market in the United States. It is the rugged nature, practicality and the frugality of the car that help the car sell like hot cakes.

Features

The Savana is offered in 4 trim levels. The base trim level LS 2500 starts at $34,710 and comes with some basic features like air conditioning and WiFi hotspot. The next trim level, the LS 3500 is priced at $37,005 and along with the features offered with the LS 2500 it comes loaded with 4 channel ABS and power convenience package. The other variants, the LT 2500 and the LT 3500 too are priced at $34,710 and $37,005 respectively.

We recommend:

The LS 2500 is the most sensible variant that you can buy. At $34710, it comes with great practicality and enough equipment. This variant of this van just satisfies the purpose that it is built for.

Engine

"Even the standard-wheelbase Savana is a large vehicle, and it drives like one. Tidy handling and accurate steering are not among the big GMC's marching orders."-Edmunds

Engine and Transmission

The Savana is equipped with a 4.3 liter inline 6 cylinder engine. The power plant makes 276 HP and delivers 298 lb-ft of torque. The engine comes mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission.

Comparing the Savana with its rivals, the Savana has the best power and torque figures. The Chevy Express gets the same engine from the GMC and hence its figures are exactly the same. The Ford Transit is only one horse deficient than the GMC while the Nissan NV makes 261 HP.

Ride and Handling

The GMC Savana is a full-size van. It is a large vehicle and you'll certainly have a tough time wading it through the traffic. Also, the steering wheel feels light and lacks feedback. Take around the corner at high speeds and there is a good amount of body roll and thus you do not feel confident while taking it around the corners.

Ride quality isn't the best. You will be thrown around when the van hits a speed bump or a pothole. Suspensions are very stiff.

Braking

The GMC Savana gets 12.8 inches diameter discs up front and 13.0 inches diameter discs at the rear. The large brakes are sufficient to get this 6000 lbs. van to a halt.

Only the Nissan NV gets a bigger set of brakes. The Nissan NV gets 14.2 inches diameter discs on the front wheels and 14.4 inches diameter discs at the rear.

Interior

"Unlike many in this segment, the GMC Savana offers seating for up to 15 passengers. (Most others max out at 12.) Unfortunately, a high roof is not on the options list."-Edmunds

The GMC doesn't have a very fancy interior. Again it is pretty basic and boring. There are some old buttons and switches to control the air conditioner and the audio system. Also the quality of the plastic used is cheap. All this highlights the frugality of the van.

Seating and Comfort

The Savana can accommodate 12 people. Now space in vans have always been and compromise and so is the case in Savana. In spite of having the largest exterior dimensions, the Savana doesn't have the largest interiors. Passengers will certainly have a hard time getting in and out of this car.

The Ford Transit can only accommodate 8 passengers but it does offer better space than the GMC. On the other hand, the Nissan NV offers better space than the GMC and also accommodates 12 people.

Cargo Volume

The GMC Savana offers a good amount of cargo volume so that you can cramp all your luggage inside it. With the second row of seats folded, you open up to 216.2 cubic feet of volume.

Towing Capacity

GMC's Savana passenger offers best-in-class towing capacity and even with a house full inside this van it can still tow a small trailer-home. Savana's cousin express offers the same amount of towing capacity and that confuse even the smartest of buyers.

The GMC Savana is the largest car in this segment. The Ford Transit and the Nissan NV both are smaller than the GMC Savana.

Safety

Safety and Reliability.

This is not the most advanced car when it comes to tech and gizmo and hence comes only with a few safety equipment.

  • Standard driver and front passenger frontal air-bags
  • Head-curtain air-bags for the first three rows
  • Enhanced Technology Glass
  • Seat-mounted side-impact air-bags
  • Tire Pressure MonitoringSystem
  • Available Side Blind Zone Alert

Competition

GMC Savana 2500  vs Chevrolet Express 2500 LS

The Chevy Express is a Savana under the skin and the Savana is a Chevy Express under the skin. Except for the badging and the branding, most of the things are similar between the Express and the Savana and so there isn't any really much that you can differentiate between the two vans.

GMC Savana 2500 vs Ford Transit Wagon T-150 XL

The Ford Transit is $500 costlier than the GMC Savana. Also, it can only accommodate 8 people while the GMC can carry 12. But on the flipside, the Ford is a fresher van and has much more tech and gizmos on offer. So if you can shell out some extra bucks and can sacrifice on 4 passenger seats then definitely the Ford Transit is the better option.

GMC Savana 2500 vs Nissan NV Passenger 3500 S

The Nissan NV is costlier than the GMC. Moreover, it is 15 horses deficient to the Savana. It is also heavier than the Savana. But the Nissan beats the GMC when it comes to features and creature comfort that\u2019s there on offer. The Nissan van is younger than the GMC and thus has lots of features on board only for a few bucks extra. So the Nissan will on any day be a better buy than the GMC.

Final Verdict

The GMC Savana Passenger is a very basic and dull van. It is only built to satisfy its purpose and offers nothing extra that can really catch the buyer's eye. There is nothing really exciting about this van and it is a boring vehicle.

The GMC Savana is uncompetitive and it does nothing to sell itself. If your only purpose is to carry people and their luggage from one place to another and if you are in the transportation business, then the GMC Savana is probably the car that you should consider buying. Else if you're looking for a van to carry your large family around then the GMC Savana is not really advisable.
