A full-size passenger van still exists in the form of GMC Savana, and it carries the old truck-based van genes. With the rugged vibes, it does offer a great towing ability. We already have 3-row SUVs and high-end 3-row minivans, so what is keeping these barebones vehicles alive? These vans are empty canvases for the people in the modification business, and you will have your minds blown once you see the kind of ultra-luxury people movers these become.

Forget about the performance & handling factor for a minute, the 2022 Savana 3500 Passenger Van can give the best of luxury SUVs a run for their money once upgraded & can house more people than any SUV or Minivan can only dream of. The current 2021 Savana model comes in three different engine options: 6.6-L V8 gas, 4.3-L V6 gas, and 2.8-L diesel engines, and the 2022 models would feature the same powertrain options. The 2022 GMC Savana 3500 rivals the likes of the 2021 Chevrolet Express 3500, 2021 Ford Transit XLT-350, and 2021 Nissan NV 3500.

2022 GMC Savana 3500 Passenger Van Features

The 2022 GMC Savana 3500 Passenger Van would also come in two trims, namely LS and LT. The features will be the same basic ones as the current model, well basic is an understatement. We can’t blame GMC for this as these vans are supposed to haul more cargo than what normal people carry in their normal vehicles, but they saw an opportunity and introduced the passenger variants too. The base trim comes with vinyl upholstery, power windows and locks, and a very basic 2 speaker sound system which won’t be enough even for 2 passenger rows. We are glad that we still have cruise control for those effortless highway drives.

Chrome bumpers

Tilt only steering wheel

Remote locking & unlocking

Forward collision warning

Rearview camera

Lane departure warning

The LT trim adds better interior features like the cloth upholstery and floor carpets. It is mind-boggling to see lane departure warning and forward Collision warning as standard on such a basic van since many of the modern vehicles lack these features. There are some optional packages, but those really don’t add much to the roster. If you have some serious power needs, then you can get the 6.6L V-8 engine for an added extra.

Which Trim should you buy?

Buying this van only makes sense if you have a business that requires moving a large number of passengers for shorter distances or simply as a cargo van. Now, if you still decide to buy this vehicle, get the base trim itself and get the safety package along with the keyless entry and start package. We shouldn’t really say this, but hand over the van for a serious modification, and this way you will have a super comfortable vehicle for more than 8 passengers with all the amenities you can imagine.

Release Date

GMC generally rolls out its vehicle in the third quarter of the year, the 2021 model is already in the market and best for the customers who want a blank canvas to paint. So, GMC would announce its next year 3500 model around September end and would probably launch the vehicle at year’s end.

2022 GMC Savana 3500 Passenger Van Engine and Performance

3.0/10

GMC Savana will have the same three engine options for 2022. The first one is a 4.3L naturally aspirated V-6 engine which comes as standard in the current year’s model. The engine comes mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission. This mill produces 276 hp & 298 lb-ft of torque which seems respectable, but once the van is filled with people or cargo, the engine struggles a little. So better to skip this one and get the 6.6-L V8 which produces 401 hp and 464 lb-ft of torque, which is ample for any utility work or even just for moving people around without stressing the engine.

2022 GMC Savana 3500 Passenger Van side view

The 4.3-Liter V6 engine has a better payload capacity of 4,280 pounds, but the towing capacity is limited to 7,500 pounds. The 6.6-L V8 engine gets a better towing capacity of 10,000 pounds, but the payload gets slashed at 4,010 pounds. There’s one 2.8-L diesel engine available but with just 181 hp & 369 lb-ft of torque, but it doesn’t make any sense in getting one. The van in its standard configuration takes 8.4 seconds to reach the 60 mph mark and completes a quarter-mile in 16.5 seconds.

All the vans come equipped with a V6 engine as the base choice, and the power output is very similar to one another. Chevy and GMC Savana share the same performance figures and try to accomplish the 0 to 60 mph acceleration record within 8.4 seconds. Ford Transit, on the other hand, beats all the rivals with its slightly higher performance. Overall, the GMC Savana is the champion in the segment as far as utility is concerned, thanks to its best-in-class towing abilities.

2022 GMC Savana 3500 Passenger Van Fuel Economy

6.0/10

Vans are exempted from the fuel economy testings by the federal agencies, so we would have to rely on the user reviews. People are getting 12 MPG in the city and 16 MPG on the highway, which isn’t bad at all. The 31-gallon fuel tank will get you 434 miles of combined range. The turbodiesel engine will definitely provide better fuel economy, but sadly, we don’t have any actual numbers to support this fact.

From the information we have gathered around, all these vans claim more or less similar mileage. Looking at the performance figures of the GMC Savana and the Chevrolet Express, one can estimate that they will offer similar efficiency figures, whereas the Ford Transit is the one with the best performance in the segment, and the price for that performance would be the slightly lower efficiency. Besides that, Chevy and GMC not only share the corresponding performance figures but also the same 31 gallons of fuel tank capacity and that is what matters for a van.

2022 GMC Savana 3500 Passenger Van Interior

3.0/10

The interior of the GMC Savana 3500 Passenger Van is all about space and practicality. The time passed by, but the interior has still remained in the past. The dashboard is very simple with conventional dials and switches covering most of the center console. Let’s not go into materials and quality as those aren’t the priority here, although the GMC comes in two different wheelbase sizes. It hasn’t been confirmed yet, but the 2022 version of GMC Savana 3500 should get a cosmetic change inside the cabin.

2022 GMC Savana 3500 Passenger Van cockpit area

The passenger van gets accommodation for 12 passengers in a 2-3-3-4 setup. The seats get vinyl or cloth upholstery depending on your choice and are fairly comfortable. Except for the front row, you won’t get any headrests for rear passengers, this makes it a strict cargo hauler or a short-distance shuttle. Overall, the interior of the Savana 3500 Passenger Van is basically an empty shell letting you customize depending on your needs.

All the vans are aimed towards practicality, and for the most part, the interior isn’t any good, but the Ford Transit and Nissan NV both get an immensely advanced dashboard compared to the GMC. Ford Transit and Nissan NV 3500 seem more spacious in the seats of the first, second, and third rows, while the fourth row somehow lacks space. The GMC and Chevrolet are identical from the inside as well and have slightly less space than the other two. The 2022 version will follow the same interior trend. Standout interior features include:

  • Vinyl upholstery
  • Cloth front bucket seats
  • Console, deluxe with swing-out storage bin
  • Manual tilt steering column
  • Floor Carpets
  • Power windows

What’s there to keep you entertained?

GMC thought why would anyone like to listen to music on their short journeys, and so in the recent 2021 variant, we have a 2-speaker stereo system with a small digital display to see the information. What bugs us is that we can’t even have a better sound system as optional, while the Ford offers a basic yet nice touch screen setup as standard. The best we can additionally add is the Bluetooth and USB ports for $150. We hope that GMC will take care of the customer’s entertainment and at least try to provide some entertainment-related features in the future. Standout infotainment features include:

  • 2 speaker sound system
  • 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot capable
  • AM/FM stereo with seek-scan and digital clock
  • OnStar & GMC Connected Services capable
  • Bluetooth and USB ports (Optional)

2022 GMC Savana 3500 Passenger Van Exterior

5.0/10

Commercial vans aren’t designed masterpieces yet, but if decided, the brands can make them look a little better. The GMC Savana 3500 looks exactly like what the word Van describes. A long metal box that has a huge space inside. To make things a little upscale, we have options to get chrome for the bumpers and white painted wheels. The 2022 GMC Savana 3500 Passenger Van will come in 136’’ and 156’’ wheelbase variants for complete freedom of customization.

2022 GMC Savana 3500 Passenger Van

The current 2021 model would let you know what you can expect from the upcoming model. The 2021 model features 16-inch steel wheels with front and rear all-season Blackwall tires, front black grille, black manual-folding outside mirrors, door beams, steel-side, daytime running lamps, front dual halogen composite lamps, rearview camera, solar-ray deep-tinted glass, and front intermittent wipers.

Compared to the rivals, the GMC Savana 3500 Passenger Van offers what’s the norm in the segment in terms of wheelbase and interior space. The Ford Transit is the widest and has the biggest wheelbase of 148 inches in the competition, while Nissan NV 3500 is the longest and has 146.1 inches of wheelbase, which is better than the Chevy and GMC. Chevy and GMC have the same exterior dimensions and automakers might not change it in the near future. Standout exterior features are mentioned below:

  • 16-inch steel wheels
  • Chrome bumpers
  • White-painted wheels
  • Halogen headlights
  • Solar-Ray light-tinted glass
  • Swing-out passenger-side door
  • Aluminized stainless-steel muffler and tailpipe

2022 GMC Savana 3500 Passenger Van Safety

7.0/10

Well, we don’t have any crash ratings as expected, but one surprising thing is the active safety features that it comes with. The 2022 GMC Savana 3500 Passenger Van will have a blind-spot monitoring system and forward-collision warning as standard features, many modern vehicles miss these things sometimes. It comes as a surprise, especially for a vehicle this simple. Well, it's not a safety feature per see, but the whole body of the van is reinforced with steel beams for added structural strength. Let's see the active safety features it comes with.

  • Reinforced cabin with metal beams
  • Forward Collision Alert
  • GMC Connected Access capable
  • Hill Start Assist
  • Lane Departure Warning
  • Rear Park Assist

2022 GMC Savana 3500 Passenger Van vs 2021 Chevrolet Express 3500 Passenger Van

Both the vehicles are exactly identical from the inside out. The mechanical stuff is similar, towing capacity is similar, and the fuel economy is also the same. So how to decide which one is better, well, see what badge looks better on the front, Chevrolet or GMC, and get that one. Another thing to think about is which automaker is providing better product service and thinks about the customer’s future and then make the decision yourself.

2021 Chevrolet Express 3500 Passenger Van

2022 GMC Savana 3500 Passenger Van vs 2021 Ford Transit T-350 Passenger Van

The Ford transit has one major advantage over the GMC, and that is the overall cabin look and infotainment system. Ford comes equipped with a proper touch screen infotainment system, and the dashboard looks a fair bit modern. The Ford van even drives better than the GMC and also offers better interior space as standard. The Transit van also has better, modern looks, but it lacks the towing capacity of the GMC variant.

2021 Ford Transit T-350 Passenger Van

2022 GMC Savana 3500 Passenger Van vs 2021 Nissan NV 3500 Passenger Van

The Nissan NV looks outdated than the classic GMC van, but on the inside, it is much better than the Savana. The dashboard is very modern with a much better infotainment system, but when it comes to brute performance, then GMC takes the top place without a doubt. If you still want a better utility van, then the Nissan NV 3500 is a great choice over the GMC Savana 3500.

2022 GMC Savana 3500 Passenger Van Final Verdict

If GMC wants to stay relevant, it’s about time they upgrade their products because the rivals are offering too many better features. We understand that the GMC has kept these vans so basic because they know that the end-user will have it customized according to needs, but we can’t customize the dashboard, can we? And it’s the only space of dirt on GMC’s collar. For the rest, the GMC Savana 3500 Passenger Van is a truly utilitarian van that has all the engine options you will need plus the interior space. Moreover, some of the advanced safety features it will come with make it more attractive than the other options.
