The 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 Double Cab will be available in two trims namely the SLE and Elevation with a diesel engine option. Both the trims will be priced well and come in RWD configuration as standard. An AWD configuration would be available as an optional extra. Both the trims get access to only a single standard-size cargo bed. Both trims will get a decent list of features inside the cabin and with an updated interior design they’ll be even more desirable.

We would recommend the SLE trim as it offers most of the needed features at a lesser price. With the SLE trim, you’ll get many useful features like a dual-zone climate control system, keyless open and start, a 6-speaker audio system, OnStar connected services, a rear vision camera, and many more. However, it comes with a gas engine as standard and you’ll have to opt for the torquey diesel engine. You can also opt for optional packages like Max Trailering Package and Driver Assistance Package to make your truck even more desirable. 

2022 GMC Sierra 1500 Double Cab Diesel Release Date 

Currently, test mules of the 2022 Sierra 1500 Double Cab have been spotted testing and the new model is expected to launch in the third quarter of 2021.

The 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 diesel Double Cab will be powered by a 3.0L Duramax inline-6 engine producing about 277 hp and 460 lb-ft of enormous torque. The diesel engine option is mainly for those who prioritize better towing and payload capacity than outright performance. The diesel engine is also bound to be more fuel-efficient than its gasoline counterpart. As per the current model, the engine will be mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission which is known to be smooth and responsive under different driving conditions. The 2021 model can tow about 9,300 pounds and we expect the 2022 model to tow higher loads. 

As the 2021 model offers good maneuverability and slightly stiff suspension, the 2022 model is expected to offer better handling and better suspension tuning. The suspension tuning isn’t bad on the 2021 model but it can get rough on bad roads. Around the corners, you will definitely feel the bulk of the truck and it's definitely not made for aggressive cornering as there is little body roll. The optional AWD will provide better traction on different road surfaces and improve the off-road compatibility of the truck. The 2021 Sierra 1500 diesel Double Cab does a 0-60 mph sprint in about 7-seconds and a quarter-mile drag is done in about 15.0 seconds.

All the trucks in the competition are powered by a 3.0L diesel engine. The GM twins come with an inline-6 configuration while the Ford and RAM trucks offer a V-6 configuration. The GM twins offer higher power output and better acceleration as well. But the RAM truck offers better torque output which is necessary for better payload capacity. The 2022 GM twins will be made on the GM’s new global platform and are expected to offer class-leading towing capacity just like their 2021 models. 

The 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 diesel Double Cab is expected to follow the 2021 model in terms of fuel efficiency as well. We expect it to offer decent fuel economy with a diesel engine under its hood. It will offer 22 mpg in the city, 26 mpg on the highway, and 24 mpg in combined driving conditions. With a fuel tank capacity of 24-gallons, it might offer up to 528 miles in the city, 624 miles on the highway, and 576 miles in mixed driving conditions.

As all the trucks are powered by a diesel engine, you can expect good fuel efficiency from all of them. However, the Ford and RAM trucks are slightly more fuel-efficient than the GM twins. The Ford F-150 and RAM 1500 are equipped with larger 26-gallon fuel tanks and hence offer a better range. The RAM 1500 Quad Cab offers the maximum range on a full tank of diesel, followed by Ford F-150 SuperCab and GM twins.

The 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 Double cab will get some redesigned styling elements inside the cabin to remain up-to-date and give stiff competition to the rivals. As per some reports, it will get an all-new cockpit design which will include a redesigned dashboard and a center stack that will come with a larger infotainment screen. The center console will be modified too for better storage space. 

The instrument console will now have an option to go fully digital. The traditional shifter knob will be replaced by a selector knob for a better and modern look. Also, there might be a larger sunroof/moonroof on some of the higher trim levels. The seats will be covered in premium cloth upholstery and a dual-zone climate con system will be standard. The driver’s seat will also get 10-way power adjustability along with a heating function.

As the interior dimensions of the 2022 Sierra 1500 Double Cab are not yet available and might change slightly, we’ll be considering the 2021 model data for comparison with rivals. The GM twins will be sharing the same platform and will be very identical with respect to the interior space. The GM twins also offer better cargo capacity than the Ford F-150 Super Cab and RAM 1500 Quad Cab. Some of the standout interior features are:

The 2022 Sierra 1500 Double Cab will come with some updated infotainment features and is expected to make the user experience even better. It is expected to come with a larger touchscreen display as standard and will be placed over the center stack. However, it will be powered by the same GMC user interface and come with features like AM/FM stereo, Bluetooth active streaming for two devices simultaneously as standard. 

You’ll also get access to SiriusXM satellite radio and for smartphone connectivity, there will be wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support for compatible phones. For a pleasant musical experience, it will also get a 6-speaker sound system. Also, the presence of OnStar and GMC-connected services will ensure better convenience. It will also support Google Automotive services to enable live traffic, mapping, and location search features. Some of the standout infotainment features are:

As per the 2021 model, the headlights will be full LEDs and will be accompanied by daytime running lights. The tail lamps will also be LEDs and add a modern touch to the entire design. 

The side profile of the double cab will remain unchanged and it will retain its boxy profile along with a cargo bed. However, the cargo bed size will be limited to single size for the Double Cab. The 2022 Sierra 1500 Double Cab is expected to offer decent ground clearance and it will be available with 17-inch or 20-inch wheel sizes. Overall, we expect the styling changes to be modern and upmarket.

We expect that the exterior dimensions of the 2022 Sierra 1500 Double Cab will be similar to the ongoing model and so we’ll be considering the 2021 Sierra 1500 Double Cab data for comparison. The GM twins will be sharing the new global platform and hence will offer very similar dimensions. The F-150 and RAM 1500 offer better ground clearance than the GM twins. Both of them also share a longer wheelbase as compared to the competition, leading to a better cargo capacity as well. Some of the standout infotainment features are:

However, it scores poorly in the headlights department and receives a “Marginal” rating for passenger’s side overlap crash test. However, the GMC 2022 will be well-built and will be capable of resisting high impact collisions. Most of the driver assistance features will be offered as optional just like the 2021 model. 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 diesel Double Cab V/S 2022 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 diesel Double Cab 

Both the trucks belong to the same parent company and will be sharing the same platform for the 2022 model as well. So we expect both the GMC Sierra and Chevrolet Silverado share many components including powertrain and drivetrain as well. Aesthetically they might be different but under the skin both the trucks would be very same. We are excited about the GM’s new Super Cruise functionality which will added to the 2022 models which will add some autonomous technology in both the trucks

2022 GMC Sierra 1500 diesel Double Cab V/S 2022 Ford F-150 diesel Super Cab 

The Ford F-150 SuperCab is known for its cost-effectiveness and value for money proposition. However, with the updates for the 2022 model, the F-150 won’t be a match for the new Sierra 1500 that would offer better aesthetics and interior tech as well. Currently, the Sierra 1500 provides better cargo capacity than the F-150 and we expect that to continue or even improve with the new model. The F-150 might be slightly fuel-efficient than the GMC Sierra 1500 but can’t really match its interior space and ergonomics. 

2022 GMC Sierra 1500 diesel Double Cab V/S 2022 RAM 1500 diesel Quad Cab 

The RAM 1500 Quad Cab is one of the compelling options in the light-duty truck segment and for many good reasons. It provides good value for money and is awarded by the IIHS for being high on the safety quotient. It also offers a class-leading range owing to a larger fuel tank. However, it can’t beat the GMC Sierra 1500 in terms of fuel efficiency, cargo capacity, and practicality. With the new 2022 model, it will be even more difficult for the RAM 1500 to offer a challenge to the newer and better GMC Sierra 1500 Double Cab,

The new model has been spotted testing several times and will be based on GM’s new global platform. So with all the exterior and interior updates, we believe that the new GMC Sierra 1500 diesel Double Cab will be a compelling option to buy in the light-duty truck segment. However, it falls back in terms of fuel efficiency and a number of safety features offered as standard, where some of its rivals excel. But it will make up for it by offering class-leading cargo capacity. Overall, it's a good choice in the light-duty truck segment and one must wait for its updated avatar to launch next year and experience it in full flesh before making a decision.
