The 2022 GMC Sierra 2500 HD Regular Cab is available only on the lower trims out of the vast line-up of the truck - Pro and SLE; with the Pro being the base trim. The Pro trim comes loaded with some of the highlighting features being 17-inch wheels, LED daytime running lights LED tail lights, two-tier power adjusting manual-folding side view mirrors, vinyl upholstered seats, 4-way manually adjustable driver and passenger seats, 40/20/40 split-bench seats, 7.0-inch touchscreen display with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration, 2-speaker audio system, trailering hitch and locking tailgate.

A few optional packages are also available on both trims. The Gooseneck or 5th Wheel package will include a 5th wheel and a spray-on bed liner. The GMC protection package will add an all-weather floor liner, front, and rear black molded splash guards, etc. the Remote Start package as the name suggests adds a remote start and a rear window defogger.

Which Trim should you buy?

The SLE trim is the better-equipped trim out of the two. It adds some important and necessary features like MultiPro Tailgate, cruise control, etc. making it the more desirable trim. We recommend you to go for the SLE as it would best suit buyers looking for a proper work truck. The drivetrain option of AWD will cost you an extra $2800 but it is worth it as it significantly improves its off-road capabilities.

2022 GMC Sierra 2500HD Engine and Performance

The standard engine under the hood of the 2022 GMC Sierra 2500 HD Regular Cab is a 6.6L V8 which puts out 401 hp at 5,200 RPM and has a peak torque of 464 lb-ft at 4,000 RPM. There’s a more powerful Duramax Diesel engine but unfortunately, it is not available in Regular Cab configuration. This engine is coupled with a 6-speed automatic transmission. The power can be delivered either to the rear wheels or all four wheels.

The Sierra 2500 HD and the Silverado 2500 HD are almost identical as they are both produced by GM motors. The GMC is the fastest among its rivals. It takes 7.5 seconds to reach the 60 mph mark and completes a quarter-mile in 15 seconds flat. RAM 2500 has traded torque for more power and thus it is slow on the shorter runs. All trucks in the competition sport a 6-speed automatic transmission while the RAM 2500 comes equipped with 8-speed automatic transmission. GM twins have the best on paper and on-road performance figures.

2022 GMC Sierra 2500HD Fuel Economy

The EPA doesn’t test vehicles as heavy as the GMC Sierra HD and neither does it test its competitors. However, by real-world testing, we could find out that the diesel version available in the higher trims of the Sierra are slightly more economical than the Gas-powered version. The data unfortunately is not available for the 2021 model year and it is unlikely to be available for the 2022 model year as well.

A noteworthy mention is the fuel tank capacity. The Sierra 2500 HD features a massive, class-leading fuel tank capacity of 36 gallons. Its cousin the Silverado 2500 HD also shares the podium with the same capacity. Both the Ford and RAM have only marginally smaller fuel tanks, which will not cause an indelible bearing on the range they cover.

2022 GMC Sierra 2500HD Interior

8.0/10

For the 2022 iteration, the interior is mostly unchanged. The massive exterior dimensions of the GMC Sierra HD translate into a spacious interior. There’s ample headroom and legroom for all the passengers. The exterior visibility might not be the best in class but the high driving position compensates for it a bit. The dashboard is huge and the center console design is simple and easily reachable. Soft-touch and hard-touch plastic are everywhere around the interior but all of these materials seem durable.

2022 GMC Sierra 2500HD Regular Cab cockpit area

The 2022 Sierra 2500 HD Regular Cab has a passenger capacity of three. The seats are 40/20/40 split-bench seats. The Pro trim features vinyl seat upholstery whereas the SLE is equipped with cloth upholstery. Both the driver and the passenger seats are 4-way manual adjustable. The comfort level of these seats is more than satisfactory. Long-distance traveling should not be a problem. Along with some necessary features, the Sierra 2500 HD also offers a class-leading cargo capacity along with its cousin, the Silverado. Both these trucks provide a space of 83.5 cubic feet.

All trucks in the competition can seat three people as standard. The GMC Sierra and the Chevrolet Silverado share the podium for the most spacious cabin and for the most cargo capacity. However, the quality of the interior in the RAM 2500 surpasses that of the Sierra. The Ford F-250 SuperDuty is also considerably spacious with almost similar legroom to the GMC sisters. However, the Ford and RAM have lower cargo capacities of 78.5 and 74.7 cu.-ft.

That said, the 2022 GMC Sierra 2500HD Regular Cab’s interior does have some highlighting features:

  • 40/20/40 split-bench seats
  • Single-zone air conditioning
  • Vinyl upholstery (Pro)
  • Cloth upholstery (SLE)
  • Leather-wrapped steering wheel
  • 4-way power-adjustable driver and passenger seats

What’s there to keep you entertained?

There’s no change in the infotainment system for the 2022 GMC Sierra 2500 HD Regular Cab and still has the same 7.0-inch touchscreen display. It sits high on the dashboard surrounded by air vents on both sides. Buttons and knobs used for controlling the functions are placed below the screen in a systematic order and simple layout.

This system is paired with a very basic 2-speaker audio system. It also includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. Opting for the SLE will unlock Wi-Fi Hotspot compatibility as well. The Pro trim also features a 3.5-inch diagonal monochromatic driver information display while the SLE is fitted with a 4.2-inch color display. Some standout infotainment features include:

  • 7.0-inch touchscreen display
  • AM/FM Stereo
  • Bluetooth connectivity
  • Satellite radio (SLE)
  • Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration
  • Wi-Fi Hotspot compatibility (SLE)
  • 2-speaker audio system

2022 GMC Sierra 2500HD Exterior

The 2022 GMC Sierra 2500 HD Regular Cab is a carry-forward design with next to nothing exterior styling changes. The Sierra has a commanding road presence and is one of the most recognizable pick-up trucks in the American market. The front fascia has a tall and upright stance and a menacing look. It gets this look from its oversized grille and large LED daytime running lights and LED headlamps. The hood features a dual inlet hood scoop which adds more personality. The front bumper can be chromed up which sits right above the tow hooks.

2022 GMC Sierra 2500HD Regular Cab

Coming to the side of the truck, you notice its tall profile thanks to its 10.2-inch ground clearance. The Pro trim is fitted with 17-inch steel wheels whereas the SLE gets 17-inch alloy wheels. The rear end of the Sierra 2500 HD features LED taillights and incandescent stop, turn and reverse signals. Like most pick-up trucks, the Sierra features a multi-function tailgate. It is a GMC MultiPro Tailgate with six functions. The trailer assist technology is one of the best in the business.

A variety of ground clearances are seen in this segment. The Sierra and the Silverado share the same 10.2-inch ground clearance. The RAM 2500 is the heaviest truck among its rivals, weighing over 6300 pounds, while the Sierra 2500HD also weighs over the 6,000 lbs mark. Its wheelbase of 141.6 inches is only 0.4 inches shorter than the class-leading Ford. When observed statistically, each truck has almost similar dimensions and proportions. In terms of design, each truck has a rugged and brawny appearance, typical of the truck segment.

That said, the Sierra does have a lot of going on for its design, which is highlighted by:

  • LED daytime running lights
  • LED headlamps
  • The two-tier, heated upper glass
  • Convex lower glass
  • Power adjusting, manual-folding side-view mirrors
  • GMC MultiPro multifunction Tailgate
  • Hood scoop
  • Tow hooks
  • Corner step
  • Side steps

2022 GMC Sierra 2500HD Safety

The 2022 GMC Sierra HD trucks haven’t been crash-tested yet. They aren’t likely to be crash-tested in the future either since these are commercial vehicles. However, with its extensive list of specifications, it will be extremely safe and dependable. Standard safety equipment on the 2021 Sierra 2500 HD is most likely to be carried forward for the 2022 version. Some of the standout safety features:

  • Park assist
  • Tire pressure monitoring system
  • Stability control
  • Emergency braking assist
  • Trailer monitor
  • Hitch guidance
  • Hill Start assist
  • Electronic trailer-sway control

2022 GMC Sierra 2500HD Competition

2022 GMC Sierra 2500 HD Regular Cab vs 2022 Ford F-250 SuperDuty Regular Cab

Both the trucks are good in some way but the Sierra has better performance, brakes, cabin space, and bed space than the F-250. The F-250 has the upper hand in terms of towing capacity. If you’re looking for some serious hauling and can excuse its lackluster features, then the Ford F-250 SuperDuty is a good choice. Otherwise, the Sierra proves to be a better all-around performer.

2022 Ford F-250 SuperDuty Regular Cab

2022 GMC Sierra 2500 HD Regular Cab vs 2022 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 HD Regular Cab

Both these trucks are based on the same platform and are almost identical in terms of numbers. The Silverado 2500 HD is a more rugged and work-focused truck while the Sierra is more composed. That is probably the only difference between the two. Both make excellent choices for heavy-duty pick-up trucks and choosing one is completely dependent on the buyer’s preference.

2022 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 HD Regular Cab

2022 GMC Sierra 2500 HD Regular Cab vs 2021 RAM 2500 Regular Cab

The RAM 2500 HD is slightly less torquey than the Sierra 2500 HD but it has better-stopping power. The RAM 2500 HD has a class-leading towing capacity and has more payload capacity than the Sierra. Not just that, the RAM’s interior is one of the best in the segment. For the price of $35,425, it stands cheaper than the Sierra. We feel that the RAM brings more value to the buyer than the Sierra making it our preferred choice.

2021 RAM 2500 Regular Cab

2022 GMC Sierra 2500HD Final Verdict

The 2022 GMC Sierra 2500 HD Regular Cab is an easy recommendation to those who are looking for heavy-duty pick-up trucks. For the price point, it offers a good all-around package. However, when compared to its rivals, it falls short on interior amenities and towing capacity but the performance that it delivers is adequate. Overall, this truck is highly reliable despite its lackluster features and would definitely prove to be a good purchase.
