The GMC Sierra 2500HD Regular Cab is a highly capable pickup truck from the automaker. This Full-blown pickup truck is one of those compelling offerings amidst a crowded pickup truck market. While retaining its modern styling with bulky and rugged design, the GMC Sierra HD has a strong road presence. It also offers a tremendous towing capacity. However, this pickup truck is powered by a robust diesel engine that puts out colossal power and torque which makes it an even more capable off-roader and workhorse truck. Moreover, this truck is available in 2 different trims, both the trims can be had with either RWD or AWD. Speaking of comfort, you get a minimalistic yet comfortable interior with a roomy cabin which some of its rivals fail to offer. Nevertheless, the materials used in the cabin of the base version look cheap.

Expert Review, Pricing Analysis and Buying Guide

As you go up the trim level, you would get a better cabin. Despite having some drawbacks, there are also a lot of good things to talk about this truck. Starting with a refined 10-speed automatic transmission that generates flawless gear ratios, a mind-boggling towing capacity, and an attractive towing camera system. There are several alternative three-seater Pick up trucks in the segment, but its main competitors include the Ford F-250 SuperDuty SuperCab Diesel, RAM 2500 Regular Cab Diesel, and Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD Regular Cab Diesel. So, how well does the 2022 GMC Sierra 2500 HD Regular Cab Diesel fare in this competition? Let’s find that out.

Features

The 2015 GMC Sierra 2500 HD Regular Cab Diesel is primarily available in two trim levels namely base and SLE. The Base trim is pretty much bare bones. However, you get some creature comforts in the SLE trim. The base trim starts at $45,790 for the RWD and goes up to $48,590. Speaking of SLE trim, it is priced at $50,890 for the RWD version and $53,690 for the AWD. These are the prices of the 2021 model year. The new prices will be revised and are expected to cost an additional $700 across all the trim levels. As standard, the GMC Sierra 2500 HD Regular Cab Diesel comes with features like 4-way adjustable seats, 7” color infotainment screen, Premium synthetic leather seats, Cruise control, Remote keyless entry, and Semi-automatic climate control.

 We Recommend:

Keeping aside the base trim, The SLE trim makes the most sense here. You get many creature comforts only in the SLE trim. Its long list of standard features coupled with a strong and efficient V8 engine makes it worth the money. As standard, it gets some standout features like Leather steering wheel, Wi-Fi Hotspot, Leather seats, Remote start, Tilt-Wheel, manual with wheel locking security feature, Driver Information Center, 4.2" diagonal color display includes driver personalization, available Compass located in the instrument cluster, optional Steering wheel audio controls, deep-tinted glass, 17-inch wheels, Remote Keyless Entry, Bluetooth for phone, connectivity to the vehicle infotainment system and an optional GMC Infotainment System with 8" diagonal color touch-screen with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.  It is speculated to arrive at the showrooms by the third quarter of 2021.

Engine and Performance

7.0/10

What sets it apart from the regular version is the diesel engine it offers. Both trims of the 2021 GMC Sierra 2500HD Regular Cab Diesel are powered by a 6.7L PowerStroke V8 Turbo Diesel engine which churns out 475 horsepower and a colossal torque of 1050 lb-ft. Front-wheel drive is standard across the lineup however the all-wheel-drive system can be had by paying additionally. Power is sent to the wheels via a TorqShift 10-Speed Automatic transmission which gets the job done very well. This V8 engine has a strong character with an insane amount of torque. It delivers a lot of low-end grunts which manages to take the vehicle from 0-60 mph in 6.5 seconds and can finish a quarter-mile in 15.6 seconds which is seriously phenomenal for a diesel-powered truck. They have tuned the engine to the maximum limits and brought the best out of the engine.

The GMC Sierra also performs great on the road and never annoys you with loud noises resulting in an amazing driving experience. The same goes for the 10-speed automatic transmission as it is pretty smooth and seamless. The only problem we could find in it was its handling, which is a bit hefty due to its size, which directly affects the vehicle within the corners. However, when it comes to off-road, it is where it comes into its own. The AWD version has some great off-roading capabilities and with all this performance, the engine seems to be pretty reliable too.

In comparison, Both the GM twins, GMC Sierra 2500HD and Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD get engines with nearly similar horsepower with the GMC edging over the Chevy Silverado. As we said before, the GMC is the most powerful truck in the segment. Next in line is the Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD which puts out 445 hp and 420 lb-ft of torque. The acceleration figures and quarter-mile time of both these cars are also similar.

The RAM 2500 HD Regular Cab Diesel gets the weakest engine which is evident from its performance figures, which makes it slower by more than a second from the rest of the competition. It hits 0-60 mph in 7.2 seconds and does a quarter-mile run in 16.4 seconds which is not adequate. Ford is a serious competitor here. Despite having the least power output, it surprises everyone with its performance figures and it completes 0-60 mph in 7.2 seconds.

Fuel Economy

3.0/10

Sadly, we don’t have the official fuel figures of the 2022 GMC Sierra 2500HD which makes it hard for us to evaluate the GMC in terms of fuel efficiency figures. On the downside, the fuel figures of the 2021 model are not available as well. However, the GMC comes with the largest tank of 36 gallons. As both Chevy and GMC share the same underpinnings, it shares the same fuel tank with the Chevy Silverado 2500 HD. However, in comparison with the Sierra 1500’s Fuel efficiency, the Sierra 2500 HD is expected to offer a great driving range in the city as well as the highway.

In comparison, both Chevy and GMC’s 36-gallon fuel tank helps these massive pickup trucks to attain the maximum driving range in the competition. The RAM 2500 again loses here with its smallest tank of 32 gallons. As a result, we are expecting a more or less similar driving range to the Ford F-250 due to its similar-sized tanks. The Ford F250 Supercab, on the other hand, incorporates a fuel tank of 34 gallons. All in all, truck-like these with hefty weight and bulk usually are not so good at fuel efficiency.

Interior

4.0/10

The interior of the base version is pretty much underwhelming. It offers some essential features and you cannot expect a lot of comfort from the cabin of the base trim. As standard, you get a 4-way manually adjustable seat with cloth fabric upholstery, a semi-automatic climate control. You also don’t get soft plastics inside the basic cabin. Everything you touch is pretty much hard plastic. However, things totally change when you opt for SLE, you are greeted with great comfort inside the cabin of SLE trim.

It offers a lot of high comfort features and some premium materials have been curated very well throughout the cabin. Moreover, the interior has been redesigned only last year. So you will get all the latest generation creature comforts in the SLE trim. Moving on to the interior dimensions, the GMC Sierra 2500 HD has the roomiest cabin of the lot alongside the Chevy Silverado. It can seat up to 3 passengers with a generous cabin which has headroom of 43.1 inches, shoulder room of 66.1 inches, and massive legroom of 44.5 inches which makes it the most comfortable cabin in its class. The GMC again continues its winning streak in terms of cargo capacity, it turns out to be the largest cabin in the segment measuring 83.5 cubic feet.

Among the competition, the GMC Sierra 2500HD offers a cabin that comes with adequate volume for the passengers and as compared to its rivals, it easily surpasses Ford F-250 Supercab and RAM 2500 but it comes as a draw when compared to the Chevy. The RAM 2500 on the other hand comes with the smallest cargo space of 74.7 inches which is almost 10 inches smaller than both GMC Sierra 2500 HD and Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD. The Ford F-250, however, takes the sweet spot in terms of cargo space measuring 78.5 inches. Some of the primary and optional interior features are listed below:

  • Power outlet, front auxiliary, 12-volt
  • Leather upholstery
  • Leather steering wheel
  • Power windows
  • steering wheel-mounted controls with cruise control
  • Exterior Temperature Display
  • Tilt- steering Wheel manual with wheel locking security feature
  • Two extra USB ports

How intuitive is the 2022 GMC Sierra 2500HD Regular Cab Diesel’s infotainment unit?

Just like its other qualities, the infotainment of GMC Sierra 2500HD is pretty impressive and intuitive at once. A 7-inch touchscreen is available as a standard that looks good but not the best in class. You can get an 8-inch screen in the SLE trim only. The user interface offers an easy learning curve and fiddling with the infotainment screen gives you a better understanding in a very short time.

The standard 2-speaker sound system with SiriusXM Radio might not be the best in its class yet it sounds clear. Moreover, the audio and call controls are available on the steering wheel so the driver does not have to lean forward toward the center console while driving. Below are some of its salient infotainment features:

  • The 7-inch touchscreen infotainment display
  • Simultaneous Bluetooth pairing for two devices
  • Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration
  • 4.2-inch color driver information display (SLE)
  • Satellite radio
  • Connected services including a Wi-Fi hotspot (SLE)
  • SiriusXM app
  • Bluetooth streaming audio for music and select phones

Exterior

2.0/10

Talking about the exterior, the 2022 GMC Sierra 2500 HD is expected to remain unchanged. It looks bulky and has a large front fascia. The Huge front grille looks imposing as if it wants to attack someone. The headlights look amazing with LED lights on board. It includes a sheet metal design that is squarer and has a straight-edged design cue. In fact, the 2022 GMC Sierra is at its most premium and appealing look in this iteration, with LED fog lights as well. Additionally, the new GMC Sierra sports 17-inch alloy wheels in both trims which look huge which gives the vehicle an upright stance. Moreover, it comes with a wide array of color options such as Black Raven, Red Hot, Ebony Twilight Metallic, Summit White, and so on.

Coming to the side profile, here you can clearly see how tall and clean the lines are designed. The design elements are very minimalistic here also, where you would not find any strange shapes and creases on the doors. The bonnet is large and comes with a vent that sends more air into the engine bay. You also get the foot rails at the bottom for convenience while stepping in.

The windows are large and are deep-tinted. On top of that, the roof lights further enhance their looks, and they are not here for aesthetics but also for the Safety of the car during bad weather. Moving on to the dimensions, it is the longest car in the segment measuring 235.5 inches, a width of 81.8 inches, and 79.9 inches tall which is also the widest as well as tallest pick truck in the segment. However, the ground clearance is slightly lesser than some rivals in its competition. On the downside, it happens to be the heaviest pickup truck in the segment weighing about 6237 pounds.

In comparison, the GMC Sierra 2500HD Regular Cab Diesel is the bulkiest weighing 6237 lbs in the competition while the Ford F-250 SuperCab is of least weight at 6112 pounds, which might be an important aspect in the performance of the car. The Ford F-250 SuperCab, on the other hand, is not too long but still manages to have decent cargo space.

The Chevy Silverado 2500HD also has a massive structure like the GMC, they both offer exactly the same exterior proportions and dimensions and the same ground clearance too, which measures 10.2 inches above the ground which provides you extra confidence while off-roading. Whereas the ground clearance of the Ford is the smallest here measuring 8.2 inches. The RAM 2500 Regular Cab on the other hand sports the highest ground clearance of 8.5 inches. Furthermore, Some of the standout exterior features of the new GMC Sierra include:

  • LED reflector with incandescent turn signals and LED signature Daytime Running Lamps
  • CornerStep, rear bumper
  • 17-inch alloy wheels
  • The LED tail and incandescent stop, turn and reverse light
  • Manually adjustable trailering mirrors
  • body-color door handles
  • GMC MultiPro Tailgate with six functional load/access features
  • Tailgate and bed rail protection caps

Safety

6.0/10

When it comes to the safety of the vehicle and its occupants, once again GMC Sierra 2500 HD comes up strong by having a better list of features than the other vehicles in its class and better structural integrity. The 2022 GMC Sierra 2500HD obviously has not been rated by the NHTSA and IIHS yet.

Also, 2021 has got no ratings from these organizations. The baby version of the Sierra 1500HD scores an overall Good rating in all the crashworthiness tests except for the small overlap front passenger side where it scores Marginal. Hence, we expect a better build quality for the 2022 model year. Moreover, it comes with some advanced active and passive safety features such as:

  • Parking assist
  • Rear Vision Camera
  • Four-Wheel Automated Braking System
  • Hitch Guidance
  • Post-Collision Safety Systems
  • Stability Control
  • Emergency Braking Assist
  • Forward Collision Warning
  • Trailer Monitor
  • Power trailering mirrors
  • Head-up display

Competition

2.0/10

2022 GMC Sierra 2500HD Regular Cab Diesel vs 2022 Ford F-250 SuperCab Diesel:

The 2022 Ford F-250 SuperCab Diesel always offers promising pickup trucks and the new Ford F-250 SuperCab Diesel, being the most affordable pickup truck of the bunch. But unlike some pickup trucks, it is very competitive and sporty, with its unrelenting performance from the least powerful engine, it manages to keep pace with the GMC Sierra 2500HD in terms of performance. However, Sierra offers a more spacious cabin and a large fuel tank than the Ford F-250 SuperCab Diesel. On the whole, Ford happens to be more valuable from money than all the pickup trucks in the competition.

2022 GMC Sierra 2500HD Regular Cab Diesel vs 2022 RAM 2500 Regular Cab Diesel:

The 2022 RAM 2500 Regular Cab Diesel has always been a tough competitor to the GMC Sierra. However, it is heavier than the GMC Sierra 2500 HD which makes it less enjoyable and affects the handling. Performance is a letdown in the RAM 2500 Regular Cab Diesel. Moreover, the RAM 2500 Regular Cab Diesel has a smaller cabin than the GMC with limited legroom space on offer. Considering all the facts, the GMC Sierra 2500 HD seems to be a better option.

2022 GMC Sierra 2500HD Regular Cab Diesel vs 2022 Chevy Silverado 2500HD Regular Cab Diesel

As you can see, both these cars are pretty much the same in many aspects except for the engine, the Sierra comes with a better and a more torquey engine. Apart from that, both these cars are neck and neck in all the other aspects. Moreover, the Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD comes with a reasonable price tag. Altogether, the Chevy Silverado is a better pick in the competition.

Final Verdict

The 2022 GMC Sierra 2500HD Regular Cab Diesel seems to be definitely in the higher price range, Moreover, the GMC is one of the handsome looking pickup trucks in the segment and also the most powerful of the lot. Also, it comes with the most generous cabin and also provides some best-in-class creature comforts and a well-equipped infotainment system. In a nutshell, it is one of the best picks in this segment if price is not a concern.
