Expert Review

CARHP Editorial October 3, 2019

“Pickups used to be a family’s second vehicle, but now you can carry your family every day, tow a trailer or haul a load when you need to, drive to work or through the brush to your favorite campsite.”-Detroit Free Press

GMC has been producing trucks for a long time and the Sierra 2500HD Regular cab is the smallest of its 2500 series. Powered by a 6L V8 Flex fuel engine producing 360 horses and 380 lb-ft of torque and with an impressively good ride setup it locks horns with the likes of Ford F250 XL, RAM 2500 Tradesman and it’s twin the Chevy Silverado 2500HD. A host of safety and comfort oriented features make it an interesting bundle.

2019 GMC Sierra 2500HD Regular Cab Features

GMC Sierra 2500HD is available in only one variant of Regular Cab Configuration. But it comes loaded with all the latest safety and driving aids to haul the colossus of this truck with ease.

2019 GMC Sierra 2500HD Regular Cab Engine

It is powered by the 6L V8 Flex fuel engine which pumps out 360 horses and 380 lb-ft torque enough to tow a volume of 14500 lbs. without a hiccup.

Engine and Transmission

Powering the GM is a potent 6L V8 which chunks out 360 horses and 380 lb-ft of torque , which is moderate given its competition. Chevrolet Silverado and Sierra will have the exact same specifications because it's basically the same vehicle with different badging.

The GMC has a very linear and less dodgy power delivery because of the 6-speed Automatic transmission which helps in the goliath’s movement.

RAM 2500 is the clear winner in terms of power figures followed closely by the Ford F250. The GM and Chevy have identical figures at the end of the spectrum.

Acceleration

Acceleration is linear as it is the optimal setup for haulers. It helps keep the load on the transmission at minimum translating to the longevity of the same.

The Sierra is quickest of the lot with a 0-60 time of 7.5 seconds which is courtesy of its least kerb weight. It also has similar characteristics at full towing capacity which makes it the underdog.

The emission figures are not officially noted as trucks are not optimized for efficiency rather for sheer torque and power. So they don't even bother to do so.

Ride and Handling

The Sierra is not a very pretty handler and trucks are not designed to be so. It has a light steering to ease the weight off it. A higher seat position in favor of better visibility is a boon.

The RAM is the smoothest handling truck off the lot as it has coil spring rear suspension. The others are old school with leaf suspension which makes the ride bumpy.

The Sierra still manages to not bounce about a lot due to its rigid construction. This helps in a fairly better driving dynamics.

Braking

Braking is not the most impressive in the Sierra as it has the longest stopping distance of the lot.

Ford F250 stops the quickest followed by the RAM.

2019 GMC Sierra 2500HD Regular Cab Fuel Economy

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) doesn’t provide fuel-economy estimates for this size of vehicle.-kbb.com

Trucks are never praised for their fuel economy but for its brutal power and torque figures. Official values are not recorded due to its sheer size and weight. Moreover, few consumer forums have reported that they get an overall MPG of 17 which given the pretty impressive in this category. The Sierra actually manages to return the best range of the lot .

2019 GMC Sierra 2500HD Regular Cab Interior

Front bucket seats have flat cushions with low, but firm, bolsters comfortable for long journeys. Headroom has grown, compared to the previous generation. The center console can hold a laptop, and most Sierras offer readily-accessible charge points.-autoblog.com

Seating and comfort

The seating on the Sierra is better than its competitors' ample legroom and headroom. The leather upholstery on the seats and trims makes people forget that its a truck!

As seen from the comparison, Sierra has the most interior space which makes it a comfortable place to be in. The dimensions have increased a bit when compared to the 2018 model. Three people can comfortably occupy the cabin with the addition of a bench seat.

2019 GMC Sierra 2500HD Regular Cab Exterior

“The 2019 GMC Sierra HD is business casual: a denim shirt under a tailored suit.”-thecarconnection.com

The exterior design of GMC has been proportional with its function. But GMC has not gone over the top with it. It is actually the most sanely designed of the lot which has fewer creases and claddings. Geometric wheel arches with square headlamps and a huge grill flaunting the GMC logo clearing clarifies its road presence.

They might have slightly overdone the chrome treatment because the truck blinds you in daylight!

Design and dimension

The design has been carried over from the previous year with a few minor aesthetic changes. The dimensions remain the same, which are huge.

At 224.4 inches it is the longest but utilizes space efficiently to give a more constructed and compact looking truck.

It has the highest ground clearance of the lot thus adding to its capabilities. The width makes it very hard to be maneuvered in cities as is the case with any truck ! In Spite of its huge dimensions , it looks and feels more compact of the lot. This is possible because of its clever designing which doesn't look the part.

2019 GMC Sierra compact exterior

The Sierra is the lightest which gives it a good power to weight ratio. This helps in keeping up with its more powerful competition. Needless to say , the lower curb weight doesn't make it any less of a competent hauler.

2019 GMC Sierra 2500HD Regular Cab Safety

Safety has not taken a back seat in the GMC as it comes with all the gizmos to help navigate it in the most challenging situations.

A dedicated host of cameras take care of surroundings when hauling objects which makes it a lot easier to be maneuvered.

Safety Features

  • Side curtain airbags
  • StabiliTrak electronic Traction and stability control system
  • Tyre Pressure Monitor
  • Backup camera

Other than these mandatory features, a host of optional ones ike forward collision alert system , lane departure warning system and parking sensors are also available.

2019 GMC Sierra 2500HD Regular Cab Competition

Ford F250 XL

With the least sticker price and the maximum payload capacity it quickly overthrows the Sierra in terms of productivity. But it fares very poorly in handling and cabin quality.

If handling and interior features are not on your bucket list then Ford is the way to go.

RAM 2500 Tradesman

The RAM is the clear triumphant of the lot. It has the largest engine producing the maximum power and torque figures of the lot. With the maximum towing capacity it has very little against itself. The GMC is outclassed by the RAM in all aspects.

Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD

The Silverado and Sierra are basically twins with different clothing. So,there is no better of both and this solely boils down to Manufacturer preference based on service availability and personal choice.

2019 GMC Sierra 2500HD Regular Cab Final Verdict

GMC struggles to stay in the fight with its highly dominant competitors . It has the most boring engine of the lot along with the least power output. It doesn’t fair well in towing or payload capacities also.

The only bargain it puts on the table is a more comfortable and feature rich interior along with a more plush ride. If you fancy these attributes over functionality then the Sierra has a strong chance otherwise , The Ford F250 XL triumphs them all with a well balanced performance to productivity ratio.
