The GMC Sierra 3500HD is a full-size pickup truck and is marketed as a slightly premium truck compared to the others in the market. The GMC Sierra 3500HD is offered in five guises- the base Pro, the above standing SLE and SLT, the adventure and high-performance spec AT4, and the luxurious Denali. This review revolves around the Crew Cab body style, and for 2022, it comes mostly unchanged with some minor changes. The base variant of the Sierra 3500HD, which had no specific trim name now is called Pro, and there are some new optional features added to the list.

Overall Rating

The 2022 GMC Sierra 3500HD Crew Cab is priced at over $43,495 and is offered in five trim levels. It gets a 6.6 liter V8 gas engine as standard, while there is an optional 6.6 liter turbo-diesel unit on offer as an option. The biggest plus of the Sierra 3500HD is that it is way more comfortable, spacious, and practical than all the other trucks in the market. And despite all the GM’s premium placement and marketing, it still is a no-frills and a no-nonsense hard-core pickup truck. In this review, we explore it inside out.

Which Trim should you buy?

If you’re looking for a basic truck for professional use or work purposes, then the base spec Pro trim should just be the right option. However, the SLT trim would be the best value for money option as it offers the best combination of price and features. For those who want a more rugged truck, you can get the AT4 trim, while the Denali offers the most luxurious travel experience and feature set.

2022 GMC Sierra 3500HD Crew Cab Engine and Performance

8.0/10

The 2022 GMC Sierra 3500HD Crew Cab gets two engine options, but as standard, you get a gas-powered 6.6 liter Naturally Aspirated V8 unit. This engine is coupled to a 6-speed automatic gearbox, and power as standard is sent to the rear wheels only, while you can avail a four-wheel-drive configuration by paying extra. However, the AT4 and Denali trims are exclusively 4WD. The gas engine makes a healthy 401 horses and 464 lb-ft of torque, which is pretty decent by heavy-duty truck standards.

2022 GMC Sierra 3500HD Crew Cab driving view

Acceleration times aren’t the deciding factor when it comes to pickup trucks, but we’ve still got the numbers. With the standard gas engine, the GMC Sierra 3500HD does 0-60 mph in about 7.5 seconds and cuts the quarter-mile distance in 15.6 seconds. These numbers are quite good by heavy-duty pickup truck standards. The 2022 Sierra 3500HD Crew Cab is perhaps one of the nicest driving trucks around. The power delivery is smooth and linear, and the engine and gearbox just react to your inputs well. It isn’t all that nimble, credit to its large dimensions, but it feels pretty stable and planted while driving.

The suspensions are tweaked on the stiffer side, and sharp bumps and potholes do travel up your spine. The steering, on the other hand, could’ve had a little more weight to it, and it feels a bit light for such a massive vehicle. Nonetheless, the feedback from it is decent, and you don’t feel disconnected from the road. All-in-all, the driving experience is pretty engaging, again by truck standards. And if you’re looking for something more exciting and adventurous, you may then perhaps opt for the AT4 version of the truck.

The RAM 3500 has the best power figures in the competition, while the GM trucks have the highest torque figures. The RAM is also the quickest truck of the lot and is followed by the Chevy and GMC trucks. The Ford, on the other hand, has the lowest power figures and ends up as the slowest vehicle in the competition. However, the RAM and the Ford both offer 3 engine options, while the GM trucks just get two.

2022 GMC Sierra 3500HD Crew Cab Fuel Economy

9.0/10

Heavy-duty pickup trucks are exempted by the EPA for fuel economy ratings. Thus, there is no official data about the 2022 GMC Sierra 3500HD’s fuel economy available. The only plus about the GMC is that it gets the largest fuel tank in the competition at 36 gallons, and so you won’t have to make frequent pit stops. Even though we don’t have the exact fuel efficiency numbers, we expect the numbers to be below 15 mpg and the combined range to be more than 450 miles.

There is not much to discuss here since official ratings are not available, except that the fuel economy to be below 15 mpg in all trucks. The Chevy and GMC, however, come with a larger 36-gallon fuel capacity, which would result in them providing more range than the others. The RAM has the smallest fuel capacity which although not a drastic difference will significantly affect range.

2022 GMC Sierra 3500HD Crew Cab Interior

6.0/10

The interior of the 2022 GMC Sierra 3500HD Crew Cab is quite well appointed. Even in the base spec trim level, the quality of materials and the fit and finish are surprisingly good. The base spec Pro trim does get some hard plastic bits here and there, but you do get a soft touch and premium materials around the cabin as you climb higher up the trim level. The cabin design, on the whole, is pretty fresh, and the grey and black color contrast looks good.

2022 GMC Sierra 3500HD Crew Cab cockpit area

If you’re looking to carry 6 people around in the truck, it is going to be a bit of a squeeze. The seats on both rows are quite supportive, and there is tonnes of room for you to slump in. In barebones Pro trim, the seats are covered in vinyl, but you do get cloth and leather upholstery with the higher trim levels. Moreover, with the SLT trim level, GMC also offers heated and 10-way power-adjustable front seats. So, if you need all sorts of creature comfort features, you ought to opt for the top trim level.

*2021 data used for reference

The Sierra 3500HD Crew Cab is the most comfortable and spacious truck in the competition. The overall interior design and the quality of materials are far better than other trucks. The Sierra 3500HD also does well in terms of practicality and creature comforts. The truck offers 69.5 cubic feet of cargo volume with the standard bed length, and if that isn’t enough, you always opt for the long bed configuration which offers about 83.5 cubic feet of cargo space. Moreover, the Denali trim is super-luxurious, and nothing in the segment is that premium and offers that level of luxury. The bare-bones Pro trim doesn’t get many features though. Standout interior features include:

  • 60/40 split-folding rear seats
  • Rear air-con vents
  • 10-way power-adjustable front seats
  • Leather upholstery
  • Dual-zone automatic climate control
  • Heated steering wheel

What’s there to keep you entertained?

The 2022 Sierra 3500HD gets a GMC infotainment system. The system consists of a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system that is quite easy to use. There is also an optional 15-inch diagonal heads-up display that could be equipped. The interface is simple to navigate through and is pretty intuitive. The quality of the touchscreen, on the other hand, feels a bit poor, and it isn’t all that responsive. You sometimes have to press the screen hard, and that’s something we would want GMC to improve upon.

2022 GMC Sierra 3500HD Crew Cab infotainment screen

The truck also gets a good number of infotainment features even with the base spec trim. For your music needs, you get a standard 6-speaker audio system. Standout infotainment features include:

  • 6-speaker audio system
  • Android Auto and Apple CarPlay
  • AM/FM radio
  • Bluetooth smartphone integration
  • SiriusXM radio
  • Navigation
  • Rear-seat entertainment system

2022 GMC Sierra 3500HD Crew Cab Exterior

9.0/10

Well, yes, the 2022 Sierra 3500 HD Crew Cab is a pretty handsome truck and can have the buyer sold just for the looks. It has a large horizontally slated grille surrounded by a chrome belt at the front that gives it a very angry and aggressive face. There’s also the chrome bumper that looks cool. The Pro trims get a blacked-out grille and a blacked-out skid plate, but the SLE and the SLT trims get shiny chrome treatment, and that looks even better.

2022 GMC Sierra 3500HD Crew Cab

The truck has a tall stance and boasts a ground clearance of over 11 inches, and you can just take it all over without having to worry about hurting the underbody. On the side, you get blacked-out mirrors and handles with the base trim, but with the higher trims, you would get the chrome treatment here as well. Nothing interesting at the back though, just a large GMC logo slapped on the tailgate and LED tail lights and chrome rear bumper. Overall, it is butch and a tough-looking truck and has lots of attitude on its face.

The 2022 GMC Sierra 3500HD Crew Cab is the largest truck in the competition. All the other trucks are just a little smaller than the Sierra 3500HD, and that’s the reason why it looks a little grander and stronger than the other. The Sierra, along with the Chevy, also has the highest ground clearance, and that means this truck can handle bad terrains better than all the others. Standout exterior features include:

  • 18-inch, 8-spoke silver-painted wheels
  • Chrome front and rear bumpers
  • LED headlights with daytime running lights
  • Manual tailgate
  • Solar absorbing tinted glass

2022 GMC Sierra 3500HD Crew Cab Safety

8.0/10

The brakes of the 2022 GMC Sierra 3500HD Crew Cab are pretty solid and have been optimized really well. The pedal has a nice gradual feel and doesn’t feel spongy. The truck hasn’t yet been tested for 60-0 mph stopping distance, but we can assert that this truck has one of the better brakes in the competition. The 2022 GMC Sierra 3500HD hasn’t been tested and rated by both the NHTSA and the IIHS. The Pro trim doesn’t get many advanced safety features as such, but even the higher trims do not get all that many safety features. Standout safety features include:

  • Electronic trailer-sway control
  • Tire pressure monitoring system
  • HD Surround Vision
  • Lane departure warning
  • Front and rear park assist
  • Lane change alert with side blind zone alert
  • Forward collision warning with automatic emergency braking
  • Teen driving mode

2022 GMC Sierra 3500 HD Crew Cab Pro vs. 2022 Ford F-350 SuperDuty Crew Cab XL

The 2022 GMC Sierra 3500HD beats the 2022 Ford F-350 SuperDuty Crew Cab in almost all areas. The Sierra has more power, is quicker off the straight line, and drives better as well. The Sierra’s interior is also more upscale than the Ford and spacious as well. In terms of practicality too, the Sierra offers better storage capacity than the F-350. The GMC has so much more to offer for a couple of thousand dollars more. The only downside of the GMC is that it just has one gas and one diesel engine on offer while the Ford truck has three engine options.

2022 Ford F-350 SuperDuty Crew Cab XL

2022 GMC Sierra 3500 HD Crew Cab Pro vs. 2022 Chevrolet Silverado 3500 HD Crew Cab Work Truck

Well, both the trucks under the skin are the same. You pay the premium for the GMC over the Chevy for better looks, comfier interiors, and that little bit of extra snob that the GMC has. Moreover, the GMC gets a better list of standard features than the Chevy and so the premium is justified. All in all, if you don't want to spend extra on the luxury provided by the GMC, you will still be getting the same mechanical machine with the Chevy Silverado 3500HD.

2022 GMC Sierra 3500 HD Crew Cab Pro vs. 2021 RAM 3500 Tradesman Crew Cab*

The 2022 RAM 3500 is yet to be launched, but we expect no major changes for 2022, and hence we’ve pitched the 2021 model against the 2022 Sierra 3500HD for reference. The RAM 3500 in its standard guise does not get many features and equipment. The only plus of the RAM over the GMC is that it gets a gas engine as standard along with 2 diesel engine options, so you just get to choose the right powertrain as per your needs. Otherwise, if the engines of the GMC suffice your purpose, opt for the GMC only.

2022 GMC Sierra 3500HD Crew Cab Final Verdict

The 2022 GMC Sierra 3500HD Crew Cab is an amazing proposition. It has power, performance, drivability, features, and at the same time, manages to stay upscale and premium than its rivals. The Sierra 3500HD might be a little pricier than its rivals, but then it justifies premium by delivering better stuff than its rivals. If you’re in the market for a heavy-duty truck, then the 2022 Sierra 3500HD Crew Cab should certainly be on top of your list.
