The GMC Sierra, one of the oldest standing pickup trucks, is definitely also one of the grandest and most powerful pickups amongst its competition. A lot of adjectives of the superlative degree will be used when we talk about the Sierra as it definitely is the ultimate beast of the GMC lineup, and GMC with its renowned pedigree in the SUV and pick up truck sector has worked really hard on the Sierra over the years. The 2022 GMC Sierra sees no major changes from the 2021 model.

Expert Review, Pricing Analysis and Buying Guide

It still sits on the design framework of the 4th generation GMC Sierra which came out in 2019. As such a major overhaul is expected for next year. Apart from the Sierra 3500 HD the Sierra also has two other models, the 2500 HD and the 1500HD, which are trimmed down-less-powerful versions The Sierra 3500 HD Diesel starts at $51,210 and goes head to head with the Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD, RAM 3500 HD, and the Ford F-350 SuperDuty. This review covers the diesel regular cab trims only. The HD in the name stands for heavy-duty and is indicative of the industry-leading towing capacity of the Sierra.

2022 GMC Sierra 3500HD diesel Regular Cab Features

The 2022 GMC Sierra 3500 HD is available in the Pro, SLE, AT4, and Denali trims. All of these trims come with a diesel motor but you can opt for a regular cab in only the Pro and SLE trims. Under the Pro and SLE trims you again get to choose from two drivetrain options of rear-wheel drive or four-wheel drive. Within these two drivetrain options, one can choose for a single rear wheel setup or a dual-rear-wheel setup. Opting for a dual-rear-wheel setup means you get two rear wheels on each side i.e. a total of four wheels at the back. Dual rear wheel trucks offer a higher gross vehicle weight (GVWR), which contributes to a higher towing capacity.

The 2022 GMC Sierra 3500 HD Diesel also gets a diesel engine variant with an integrated Power Take-Off for each of the trims and wheel setups mentioned above. This variant is $1,000 pricier than the MSRP of the corresponding trim you opt for. The Power Take-Off (PTO) is a mechanical device that attaches to the transmission of the truck and transfers its power to other external devices to run them, this can be useful for job sites.

While buying a GMC Sierra, you can also choose from a variety of optional extra packages. There is the 1SA Driver Alert Package I, including front and rear park assist, lane change alert with side blind zone alert, rear cross-traffic alert, etc. The 1SA Safety Confidence Package includes forward collision alert, automatic emergency braking, cruise control, etc. There is the Convenience Package, Fleet Convenience Package, GMC Protection Package, Hitch Package, Trailering Package, etc.

Which Trim should you buy?

For a premium of over $4,000, you get some additional features that are necessary mostly if you will be towing a trailer behind your Sierra most of the time. We recommend you should go for the top-end SLE trim as it adds some nice features as compared to the rather utilitarian base trim. However, if the price difference seems too high, the Base Pro trim won't be disappointing by any means.

2022 GMC Sierra 3500 HD Regular Cab Diesel Release Date

GMC hasn’t unveiled the launch details of the 2022 GMC Sierra 3500HD yet, but with the changes being minimal and as per the year on year trends of GMC, we expect the 2022 Sierra 3500HD to be launched by the end of the third quarter, and deliveries should begin in the last quarter.

2022 GMC Sierra 3500HD diesel Regular Cab Engine and Performance

The 2022 GMC Sierra 3500HD Regular Cab diesel comes equipped with a 6.6L Duramax Turbo-Diesel V8 engine. This chunky block of diesel motor produces a whopping 445 horsepower and a ground-breaking 910 lbs of torque. With Torque numbers like these, it is no surprise that the GMC Sierra is capable of a towing capacity of almost 36,000 lbs. The diesel motor is mated to an Allison 10-speed automatic transmission. This amazing transmission boasts of being electronically controlled with overdrive for smooth-shifting performance and a Tow/Haul mode that reduces shift cycling for better control and improved cooling when towing or hauling heavy loads

The super-intuitive Allison transmission also integrates well with the Braking setup with an Auto Grade Braking that automatically downshifts when needed to enable engine braking, helping to slow the vehicle on downhill grades and reduce brake wear. The 2022 GMC Sierra 3500 HD gets power brakes with a 4 wheel ABS system. The brake rotors are 14 inches in diameter and 1.6 inches and 1.3 inches wide in thickness on the front and back respectively. Honestly, the size might seem sufficient but the braking performance on the Sierra really is not that impressive, as the braking power just doesn’t sync up with the astonishingly high power figures.

As we can see, there is not much difference really as the Ford F-350 really steals all the limelight with its impressive stats. Although the RAM 3500 HD tows more, it is a pricier affair with a premium of almost $6,000 over the Ford. Surprisingly, the RAM is equipped with a 6-speed automatic as opposed to the 10-speed automatics of the others. Still, don’t come to a conclusion as this AISIN HD Transmission is buttery smooth and offers brutal acceleration which makes the RAM 3500HD blisteringly quick!

2022 GMC Sierra 3500HD diesel Regular Cab Fuel Economy

As we already know, the EPA does not rate mileage figures for full-size pickup trucks. So, there is no concrete figure which states the exact mileage. However, diesel engines will definitely deliver a higher economy than gasoline engines. If you are curious, the massive engine will not be very friendly and will offer a figure somewhere in the earlier teens. The gas tank size is a massive 36 gallons, but since we do not have the fuel economy figures, we cannot calculate the range, expect it to be pretty high though, on a full tank.

In comparison to the GMC truck, the fuel tank of the Ford is relatively very small and it wouldn’t be very fuel-efficient either as it is the most powerful of the lot. We have no figures on the economy of the RAM 3500HD but assuming the fact that it employs a 6-speed automatic transmission, the RAM too wouldn’t be very fuel-efficient.

2022 GMC Sierra 3500HD diesel Regular Cab Interior

The 2022 GMC Sierra 3500HD Regular Cab has a pretty much functional interior which resonates with its rugged but upstate character. Although we have no solid news on the updates, there might be minor tweaks made to the interior. However, we believe the interior to remain mostly the same. The design clearly states the intention that it is meant to be a work truck and GMC likes to describe the interior styling as “Athletic” to do justice to the workhorse that the Sierra is.

With large boxy interior styling with curved off edges, the truck looks pretty modern. A large center console area can double up as a small table to keep stuff on. The center console is extremely neat with ample space as all controls are on the dashboard and around the infotainment unit. The Gear lever sits on the side of the steering wheel. The materials used are good and of decent quality. For the upholstery, you get to choose from cloth or Vinyl and you get a leather-wrapped steering wheel.

There is seating for three people inside the cabin. The driver’s seat is 4-way manually adjustable and the passenger’s seat is also 4-way manually adjustable. The seats are in a 40/20/40 split-bench configuration. Three people can be seated as the cabin is pretty wide. Headroom and legroom are massive and well over enough for anyone. Inside the cabin, there is a large center armrest, under-seat storage, and other storage spaces.

The GMC Sierra 35000HD offers the best interior space with class-leading headroom and legroom. The cargo bed capacity is also the best on the Sierra and Silverado as compared to the RAM and F-350. Ford offers a much more spacious cabin than the RAM, which is the most cramped. The bed is also larger than the RAM in the Ford F-350. Some of the key interior features include:

  • Cloth seat trim
  • 4-way manually adjustable front seats
  • Rubberized-vinyl floor mats
  • Remote keyless entry
  • Single-zone air conditioning
  • Assist handles
  • Soft-touch plastics

How intuitive is the infotainment system of the 2022 GMC Sierra 3500HD

The base model comes with a 7” infotainment touchscreen integrated into the dashboard. You also get a 3.5” monochrome driver information screen. Upgrade to the SLE, and you come across an 8” touchscreen and a 4.2” color driver information display. The Driver Information Display refers to the screens that sit in the middle of the analog speedometer and tachometers. The system is good, intuitive, and also quite responsive.

The base Sierra comes with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth, etc. The SLE trim adds AM/FM radio, SiriusXM radio, etc. The sound is blasted via a 6-speaker sound system which is ample considering this is a regular cab. Not a whole lot to brag about, but the feature set is still quite rich for a heavy-duty pickup truck. The SLE trim also gets a portable WIFI hotspot feature which is activated on a subscription basis. By splurging some extra bucks, you also get an inbuilt trailer app to monitor information of your attached trailer but this feature is exclusive to the SLE trim. Highlights of the infotainment system include:

  • 8” infotainment system
  • Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
  • SiriusXM Radio
  • AM/FM radio
  • 4.2” driver information display
  • Bluetooth
  • 6-speaker sound system
  • 12-volt auxiliary front power outlet

2022 GMC Sierra 3500HD diesel Regular Cab Exterior

Once again, no concrete information is available, as of yet, to determine whether there will be significant changes made to the exterior or not.GMC does a good job of providing a premium appeal to the Pickup truck which none of the competitors can match up to. It’s like if the President wanted a pickup for himself, a GMC Sierra would be the best option. The front grille with its chrome boundaries and neat lines really gives a distinct appearance to the SIerra.

The LED headlamps have a classic “C”-shape. On the rear, the SLE trim gets a six-function MultiPro tailgate, allowing the tailgate to open up in six different configurations. The massive size also allows for good visibility outwards. The base trim rides on 17-inch steel wheels, while the SLE trim rides on 18-inch machined aluminum wheels, both of which are rather small for the truck's massive exterior. The tailgate also includes the EZ Lift feature with power lock and release. You also get a hitch area light.

Dimension-wise, the GMC trucks are the longest, widest, and tallest in this comparison. They also have the highest ground clearance on offer, with the Sierra 3500HD offering the highest ride height. The RAM 3500, on the other hand, is the most compact and also rides the lowest to the ground. The Ford F-350 is the heaviest whereas the GMC 3500 HD is the lightest amongst the lot. Some of the key exterior features are:

  • 18” machined aluminum wheels
  • CornerStep rear bumper
  • Bed Step
  • LED headlamps
  • LED signature DRLs
  • GMC MultiPro Tailgate
  • Heated outside mirrors

2022 GMC Sierra 3500HD diesel Regular Cab Safety

The 2022 GMC Sierra 3500HD Regular Cab is a heavy-duty truck and is not required to be tested by either NHTSA or IIHS. However, the 3500HD’s younger brother, the Sierra 1500 performs very well in the crashworthiness tests conducted by IIHS. Even though the 3500HD might not get the “Top Safety Pick” if it were to be tested, rest assured that the occupants inside have nothing to worry about. You are also greeted with the option to include driver assistance features if you add some packages. The standard and optional features include:

  • StabiliTrak and Proactive Roll Avoidance
  • OnStar and GMC Connected Services
  • Rear Vision Camera
  • Hitch guidance
  • Teen Driver mode
  • Front and rear park assist (optional)
  • Lane change alert with side blind zone alert (optional)

2022 GMC Sierra 3500HD diesel Regular Cab Competition

2022 GMC Sierra 3500HD Regular Cab vs 2021 Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD Regular Cab

There is not much to compare here as both are identical to each other. From interior dimensions to exterior dimensions, from the engine to the transmission, from fuel economy to range, everything is exactly the same. The only difference is in how they look. The GMC Sierra definitely emotes more royalty, but some people might still prefer the fact that the Chevrolet Silverado’s more driver-friendly.

2022 GMC Sierra 3500HD Regular Cab vs 2021 RAM 3500 Regular Cab

The RAM is a pretty tough competitor to the Sierra. Both brands lock horns as both are very well-known for the trucks they produce. The RAM 3500 performs slightly better but if one chooses a pickup truck for its styling, the Sierra is surely going to grab the attention. The RAM has started to look more like a crossover between a pickup and a muscle car and has been slowly losing its charm. Although the interiors of the RAM are way more modern and interesting to look at, the price point really is questionable.

2022 GMC Sierra 3500HD vs 2021 Ford F-350 SuperDuty Regular Cab

The Ford F-350 is definitely the most value for its money and you get the best in terms of power, space, and utility. However, Ford largely misses out on on-road presence. The F-350 looks like a pickup truck built in the 90s and everything right from the paint to the interiors and even the wheels look very old and dull. The Ford’s design will definitely bore you on your long trips and you will be fed up sooner or later.

2022 GMC Sierra 3500HD diesel Regular Cab Final Verdict

The GMC Sierra 3500HD is meant for the heaviest of duties, and it does its job quite brilliantly. With an impressive towing and payload capacity, the Sierra will be fit for those who want to carry more. The MultiPro tailgate is another selling point. So, yes, you can definitely consider and buy the 2022 GMC Sierra 3500HD Regular Cab or wait for the 2023 MY when it is expected to undergo a major overhaul.
