The Sierra 3500HD shares its platform with its Chevy sibling, the Silverado 3500HD. Alongside its Chevy sibling, the Sierra 3500HD also faces tough competition from the likes of the popular Ford F-350 SuperDuty and the high-tech RAM 3500. The Double Cab configuration slots right between the work-focused Regular Cab and the family-oriented Crew Cab. With a conventional towing capacity of 20,000 pounds and a payload of over 6,000 lbs, the 2022 GMC Sierra 3500HD Double Cab is an ideal fit for any heavy work-focused environment like construction or mining sites. But the question is, does it offer more value for the buck than its rivals?

2022 GMC Sierra 3500HD Double Cab Features

The GMC Sierra 3500HD lineup comes in 5 distinct trims- the base Pro trim, SLE, SLT, AT4, and Denali. Of these, the SLT, AT4, and Denali unfortunately aren’t available for the Double Cab configuration. Thus, buyers only have the option of the Pro and SLE trims while opting for the Double Cab setting. Both these trims run in an RWD configuration as standard and offer a 4WD drivetrain as an option. An overview of the features offered inside the trims is as follows-

Which trim should you buy?

Since there are only 2 trims on offer with the Double Cab configuration, you should opt for the SLE trim as it unlocks the GMC-exclusive features like the MultiPro tailgate and the ProGrade Trailering System. These features make life easier in the work environment. This variant also gets decent interior features like cloth seats and a leather-wrapped steering wheel, which is a touch above the tacky vinyl seats on the base trim. Advanced safety features like lane change alert, a bed view camera, front and rear parking sensors can also be equipped at an extra cost. Equip the 4x4 drivetrain as well, and you should have a solid heavy-duty pickup on your hands within a budget of $50,000.

2022 GMC Sierra 3500HD Double Cab Engine and Performance

4.0/10

The 2022 GMC Sierra 3500HD Double Cab draws its energy from the same trusty 6.6-liter naturally aspirated V-8 engine, which is standard on all 3500HD models and is capable of chugging out 401 hp anD 464 lb-ft of torque. GMC pairs this devilish engine to a 6-speed automatic transmission engineered to make heavy loads feel like a feather’s weight. Like a classical heavy-duty pickup, the GMC Sierra 3500HD supports the rear-wheel drivetrain as standard and also offers a stellar 4x4 drivetrain as an option. For extra traction, customers can also equip the pickup with a dual-rear-wheel setup in place of the standard single-rear-wheel setup.

2022 GMC Sierra 3500HD Double Cab

The gargantuan 2022 GMC Sierra 3500HD Double Cab is limited by its own colossal weight while driving. Still, GMC has put in a lot of effort to make the pickup’s everyday drivability and maneuverability feel better in urban environments. The steering feels hesitant while scaling tight corners. However, the steering lag issues can be fixed by selecting the optional digital variable steering assist. This intuitive feature reduces steering lag at low speeds and helps the driver to adapt to uneven road surfaces, especially while trailering or when carrying a heavy load.

The Sierra is also the first truck in its segment that offers a 2-speed transfer case. It can help you to effectively switch between two- and four-wheel drive based on road conditions. GMC also offers an excellent Traction Select system that allows you to switch between different traction settings like Off-Road mode and Tow/Haul mode. Courtesy of a gooseneck hitch, the towing capacity goes up to 23,100 pounds from the standard 20,000 lbs. The engine’s punch and enthusiasm are duly felt while accelerating on a highway on full load.

Both the GM siblings, Chevy and GMC, take the lead in the power charts with their base powertrains, sporting greater horsepower and torque than theFord andRAM heavy-duty pickup trucks. TheChevy Silverado 3500HD in particular dominates the speed charts with its impressive 0-60 mph and quarter-mile times and a thrilling top speed as well. The GMC Sierra lags behind in the 0-60 mph run, owing to its colossal curb weight.

2022 GMC Sierra 3500HD Double Cab Fuel Economy

4.0/10

Generally, manufacturers of heavy-duty pickup trucks aren’t obligated to report any of their fuel estimates to EPA. Vehicles with over 7,500 pounds of gross weight are free from any fuel MPG restrictions. Hence, there are no official estimates for the 2022 GMC Sierra 3500HD as well. However, based on various consumer reports, the Sierra 3500HD gave an average MPG of 14 in combined city and highway driving. Thus, the GMC Sierra 3500HD can be expected to shell out an estimated mileage of approximately 504 miles. The Duramax-powered 3500HD can be expected to fare a little better in the fuel economy sector.

Remember that the above-mentioned figures are only customer estimates and not official EPA estimates. Nevertheless, customers regard the RAM 3500 as one of the least fuel-efficient heavy-duty pickups. Although the GM siblings are fuel guzzlers in their own sense, they still lend a slightly better fuel economy and mileage than their rivals from Ford and RAM.

2022 GMC Sierra 3500HD Double Cab Interior

6.0/10

The Double Cab configuration doubles up the space offered by the Regular Cab, allowing a maximum passenger capacity of 5 or 6. This is ideal to fit in additional passengers while you are hauling cargo. However, if you want a pickup that is better oriented towards your family lifestyle, you may be better off with the Crew Cab variant. Inside, the 2022 GMC Sierra 3500HD sports a highly functional and rugged interior. The huge proportions of the dashboard look compelling from every angle. Optional features like a heated steering wheel, heated and cooled front seats, and perforated leather seats add a touch of opulence.

2022 GMC Sierra 3500HD Double Cab dashboard

Still, the GMC Sierra 3500HD’s interior feels generic compared to more upscale rivals. GMC offers an elevated driver’s seat with comfortable cushions to give you a commanding view of the road ahead. In the rear, the passengers get enough headroom and shoulder room. However, they may have to adjust themselves repeatedly on long trips due to the limited legroom. Nevertheless, the Heavy Duty Sierra truck offers plenty of versatile small-storage options like a spacious center console, rear seatback storage, door pockets, and many more.

The GMC Sierra 3500HD has the largest bed size in its segment alongside the Chevy Silverado 3500HD, offering a stellar cargo capacity of 83.5 cubes. The GMC’s interior dimensions are also cut above the rest. The only drawback of the GMC’s cabin is the limited legroom, but the GMC twins offer a great cabin with enough room in the front row. Nevertheless, the standout interior features offered with the Sierra 3500HD Double Cab are:

  • 60/40 split-folding rear bench seat
  • 4-way manual driver seat and passenger seat
  • 40/20/40 split-bench front seat with covered armrest storage
  • Power windows with driver express-up/down and power door locks
  • Single-zone automatic climate control
  • Vinyl seat trim

What’s there to keep you entertained?

The GMC Sierra 3500HD outclasses many of its opponents at the technology front. For starters, you get a 7-inch touchscreen powered by the latest GMC infotainment interface. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay smartphone integration are also equipped as standard. The 6-speaker music system is decent enough for a daily joyride, although you can upgrade to a Bose audio system to relish that extra bass. Navigation and Amazon Alexa voice integration can be availed by shelling out extra bucks.

2022 GMC Sierra 3500HD Double Cab infotainment screen

The Sierra 3500HD also gets a 15-inch diagonal heads-up display as an option, which is the first of its kind in the heavy-duty segment. A class-leading 15 different camera views can be accessed to monitor your truck and trailer, by opting for the HD Surround Vision camera, Rear Camera Mirror, and Bed View camera. GMC also offers you the MultiPro tailgate audio system by Kicker as an accessory that will help you turn your camping adventures into a fun-and-frolic party atmosphere. In a nutshell, the tech features offered within the suite are:

  • 7-inch diagonal touchscreen
  • Android Auto and Apple CarPlay smartphone integration
  • GMC infotainment
  • Bluetooth audio streaming
  • 6-speaker audio system
  • Available MultiPro tailgate audio system by Kicker
  • Available heads-up display

2022 GMC Sierra 3500HD Double Cab Exterior

7.0/10

The 2022 GMC Sierra 3500HD Double Cab is an epitome of a brawny pickup truck. Its boxy design is spearheaded by a massive grille in the front. LED headlights and LED DRLs are now standard on every trim level. The C-shaped taillights also add to the macho look of the pickup. GMC also offers special trailering mirrors for every Heavy Duty Sierra that can power-fold or manually retract as per your convenience.

2022 GMC Sierra 3500HD Double Cab

The star of the show is definitely the 6-function MultiPro tailgate. This advanced tailgate grants the driver access to 6 different functions that assist him in loading, unloading, and accessing the cargo box more efficiently. Overall, the GMC Sierra 3500HD Double Cab is a brawny and masculine pickup truck that makes up for an unnerving presence on the streets. However, we wish that GMC didn't go too overboard with the chrome elements, as most of them look out of place and overstyled.

The GMC Sierra 3500HD is the biggest mammoth in terms of exterior dimensions among its competitors. Its gigantic size contributes to its heavy curb weight, which pulls it back in the speed charts. Still, despite its massive size, theGMC is more adept in the handling sector than any of its rivals. It also offers one of the best ground clearance in the segment. The distinctive exterior elements of the Sierra 3500HD are:

  • CornerStep rear bumper
  • 18-inch steel painted Silver wheels
  • Chrome front and rear bumper
  • LED Headlamps and Taillamps with Signature C-Shape Design
  • LED DRLs
  • Available MultiPro tailgate

2022 GMC Sierra 3500HD Double Cab Safety

2.0/10

The GMC Sierra 3500HD’s safety quotient is currently in the dark as both the safety agencies, i.e., NHTSA and IIHS, haven’t yet crash-tested the big truck. Besides, GMC doesn't offer much standard tech onboard either, which is a worrisome trend when it comes to massive heavy-duty pickup trucks. The near 7,000-pound GMC Sierra 3500HD is equipped with thick front and rear brake rotors of 14 inches on all four corners. These brake rotors are crucial to stop the heavy pickup in the nick of time and prevent any severe accident.

The only highlight of the standard safety suite is GM’s very own Teen Driver system and a class-leading 15 camera views with the ProGrade Trailering System. The ProGrade Trailering system is a blessing in disguise as it offers a bunch of intelligent technologies to monitor your trailering experience. However, opting for all these safety features can end up burning a hole in your pocket. Meanwhile, drivers can purchase advanced driver assistance techs separately, which includes the likes of:

  • Lane departure warning
  • Front and rear park assist
  • Safety alert seat
  • IntelliBeam headlights
  • Forward collision alert
  • Lane change alert
  • Rear cross-traffic alert

2022 GMC Sierra 3500HD Double Cab Competition

7.0/10

2022 GMC Sierra 3500HD Double Cab VS 2022 Ford F-350 Super Duty SuperCab

Just like the GMC Sierra 3500HD, theFord F-350 SuperDuty offers a ton of options and configurations for every working-class individual. The Ford F-350 SuperDuty is easily the most popular pickup among the masses due to this very virtue. Ford has a lineup of 3 refined engines at your selection, which also includes a very capable diesel engine with immense towing and hauling prowess. In terms of capability, Ford just edges out its GM rival. The Sierra redeems itself with its more refined handling dynamics than the sloppy Ford. However, the honors are again even when you consider the infotainment suites of both the trucks.

2022 Ford F-350 Super Duty SuperCab

2022 GMC Sierra 3500HD Double Cab VS 2021 RAM 3500 Crew Cab

The RAM 3500 has absolutely redeemed itself as one of the aces in the heavy-duty pickup industry. RAM’s diesel engine is rated at a very high towing capacity. The RAM’s long list of off-roading equipment and technology certainly puts it at an edge compared to the GMC Sierra 3500HD. On top of that, the RAM’s interiors are the finest in its segment, boasting remarkable comfort and quality. Although the towing specs of both the pickups are identical, the RAM 3500 justifies itself as the better value-for-money option.

2021 RAM 3500 Crew Cab

2022 GMC Sierra 3500HD Double Cab VS 2022 Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD

In the battle between two of GM’s biggest sister pickups, the differences are almost marginal. The GMC Sierra 3500HD shares its platform with the Chevy Silverado 3500HD, hence their interior and exterior dimensions are identical. Although both trucks share the same capability, the GMC is generally regarded as the more upmarket option than the Chevy. If you only want to haul heavy cargo on a budget, the Chevy Silverado is the better choice. For a more luxurious appeal, the GMC Sierra 3500HD is the way to go.

2022 Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD

2022 GMC Sierra 3500HD Double Cab Final Verdict

The 2022 GMC Sierra 3500HD Double Cab is an underdog in the heavy-duty pickup industry, which probably deserves more attention for its robustness and exceptional towing and hauling capabilities. The GMC Sierra 3500HD can tow heavy loads without breaking a sweat while keeping your work colleagues comfortable and engaged inside with its tech-savvy entertainment features. The Sierra 3500HD also offers you exclusive features like the MultiPro tailgate, ProGrade Trailering system, a heads-up display, a tailgate audio system by Kicker, and 15 camera views, which no other competitor offers. This powerful and tech-filled buffoon definitely deserves to be at the top of your bucket list if you are into heavy and brawny pickup trucks.
