The 2022 GMC Terrain packs the same affordable 2-row 5-seater SUV that has become a valuable choice among car buyers these days. These crossovers are quite versatile and combine the best of almost every segment. With a high driving position, spacious cabin, plentiful cargo space, and effortless driving style, these bestow the buyers with the best value for money rather than massive SUVs that are hard to maneuver in tight traffic or around the corners.

However, the 2022 GMC Terrain is recommended for its rugged pickup front, comfortable cabin, and the Denali trim that turns the interiors and exteriors upside down with premium touches. The 2022 GMC Terrain will be through some changes that we’ll discuss in a while. The all-new GMC Terrain SUV upgrade includes salient updates to its safety feature list, a new front design, a new 1.5L 4 cylinder fuel-efficient engine with updated performance figures, and adds some extra 1000 dollars to its MSRP compared to the previous version.

Expert Review, Pricing Analysis and Buying Guide

Though these updates have been delayed due to the current global pandemic, the same has taught the world that “it’s better late than never”. It doesn’t surmount some leading crossovers in terms of performance or significant creature comfort. Yet it combines a potent engine with relaxed and agile handling and various trims to choose whichever suits your personality and purpose.

2022 GMC Terrain Features

The 2022 GMC Terrain cuts short the trim lineup and will be available in 4 different trims options. The Denali and AT4 trims come as different vehicles and will be reviewed separately. For now, the base SL trim that was available till the previous 2021 MY has been deleted from the configuration table. The SLE is the base trim now and is expected to be priced at $ 31,595.

The GMC Terrain was criticized for lacking a handful of standard features which its key competitors were equipped with, and the 2022 GMC Terrain brings some of those as an update. There’s a new suite of driver-assist features that are acknowledged as “GMC Pro Safety” and it will acquire the Terrain with automatic emergency braking, lane keeps assist with departure warning, forward collision alert, front pedestrian braking, a distance indicator, and GM's IntelliBeam as standard.

We Recommend:

The base trim of the 2022 GMC Terrain called the “SLE” now offers a decent list of the interior, exterior, and infotainment features like 18" alloy wheels, 4.2" driver-information display, auto-dimming rearview mirror, a 7" GMC infotainment system featuring both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. However, now both the 2022 GMC Terrain trims offer valuable features you can check the SLE for its lower price and useful features list.

The pricing of the 2022 GMC Terrain has not been announced, it is expected to inflate by a couple of 1000 dollars compared to the previous model. With that, the estimated price tag should start from the $31,595 price mark for the SLE base trim, after the SL was pulled out.

Release Date

The 2022 GMC Terrain will arrive on the dealer lots in the fall, along with the top-trim Edition 1 Hummer EV.

2022 GMC Terrain Engine and Performance

The 2022 GMC Terrain engine kills off the 2.0L turbo block, which means a 1.5L Turbo Inline-4 will be the sole engine option, that will churn out 170-hp and 203 lb-ft of peak torque. This engine will be finding its match with a 9-speed automatic and front-wheel drive as standard, though the buyers can attain the all-wheel-drive is optional. The smaller engine does lack the punch that the 252-hp 2.0L powerhouse brought along with it. The 2022 GMC Terrain also loses its towing capacity to just 1500-pound to the previous 3500-pound with the 2.0L optional block.

But the 1.5L claims a respectable place in terms of driving and handling, it cruises with smoothness on roads, and propels the crossover with ease, an 0-60mph is expected in 9.3 seconds and that will be lauded by daily drivers. The optional all-wheel drive is a worthy upgrade to handle rare rough patches and confident driving dynamics in general.

The 2022 GMC Terrain loses the 2.0L block and is ranked at the bottom in the rivalry against the more powerful Honda CR-V, Mazda CX-5, and Toyota RAV4. But in terms of torque, it finds itself with better morale against the Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4.

2022 GMC Terrain Fuel Economy

The 2022 GMC Terrain will be equipped with the 1.5L Turbo Inline-4 as standard, this certainly comes with a power drop, but the fuel efficiency might cheer up the gloomy faces. The 2022 Terrain will be able to claim and deliver 26/30/27 MPG in city/highway/combined scenarios. These figures are definitely on the better side of the average. A 14.9-gallon will gulp enough fuel to stretch it to 402 combined miles on average.

Judging from the figures above, it is easy to crown the 2022 Honda CR-V as the most efficient competitor, with the Mazda CX-5 at the last spot. The 2022 GMC Terrain is not far from the leading rival and exceeds in terms of mileage.

2022 GMC Terrain Interior

The 2022 GMC Terrain interior has received no major changes in terms of upholstery or cabin layout. This means the cabin remains unchanged and reflects the bold styling cues from the big brother Sierra, also boasting the most innovative picks like a “trigger shift”- a compact, dash-mounted unit featuring buttons that frees up console storage space.

The GMC Terrain boasts a great room inside the cabin, with soft and comfortable upholstery. The standard seating capacity of 5 in the Terrain comes along with practical yet upmarket interiors. The 2022 GMC Terrain also retains its large luggage storing capacity with 60/40 split-folding rear seats.

The infotainment section does get new updates, the 2022 GMC Terrain gets wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay as standard along with a built-in Amazon Alexa voice assistant right from the base trim. The Terrain still fits a big-screen infotainment screen with clear graphics and an intuitive interface with an onboard Wi-Fi hotspot.

The 2022 GMC Terrain boasts one of the roomiest cabins in the rivalry, however, each of the rivals is splendid in terms of cabin space and comfort and having adequate legroom and headroom. With large doors in both rows, you will find that going in and out of the GMC Terrain is pretty effortless. All the vehicles have got good ground clearance and shorter passengers might find it a hassle to climb. Some important and notable comfort features on the GMC Terrains interior are :

  • Dual-zone automatic climate control system
  • Heated seats
  • Leather upholstery
  • 8" touchscreen infotainment system
  • Android Auto and Apple CarPlay
  • Wi-Fi hotspot
  • 6-speaker audio system
  • Bluetooth connectivity
  • SiriusXM radio with built-in navigation

2022 GMC Terrain Exterior

The 2022 GMC Terrain will seek no major makeover in the exterior aspects. The buyers' can still enjoy the truck-like rugged and tough appeal that the Terrain accompanies with. The 2022 Terrain, though, adds a new taillight design in the rear and AT4 trim that adds trim-specific wheels, a black chrome grille, black wheel arches, and badging. The buyers can still pick the range-topping Denali trim to have the shiny chrome with other subtle yet details that make the crossover look unique.

The 2022 GMC Terrain will, yet again, flaunt a long wheelbase with apt ground clearance. The body arches and the flowing roofline in the last quarter of the wheel make the Terrain look modern. The sharp C-shape DRLs add a dead-serious look to the comfy Terrain. Some notable exterior features on the GMC Terrain are:

  • LED headlights with LED DRLs
  • Heated and powered side mirrors
  • 18" alloy wheels wrapped in P225/60R18 all-season tires
  • Powered liftgate
  • LED taillights
  • Roof rack
  • Active noise cancellation

2022 GMC Terrain Safety

The 2022 GMC Terrain gets more generous adding some significant driver-assistance features to the standard list. With these updates, the Terrain will include automatic emergency braking, lane keeps assist with departure warning, forward collision alert, front pedestrian braking, a distance indicator, and GM's IntelliBeam as standard.

This will be followed by airbags, traction control, and rearview cameras that are already standard in all trims of the 2022 GMC Terrain. The updated 2022 Terrain will carry on the same robust structure, the previous model year was rated with first-class 5-star ratings by NHTSA and impressive overall “Good” safety ratings by the IIHS.

2022 GMC Terrain Competition

2022 GMC Terrain vs 2022 Honda CR-V

The 2022 Honda CR-V rival is more powerful and offers a second engine option too, which the updated 2022 GMC Terrain will feel sorry about. Along with performance, the Honda CR-V delivers more efficient numbers than the Terrain. But for buyers looking for a more rugged appeal, the GMC Terrain should impress them at first sight.

Comparing the interiors, both the rivals are spacious, but buyers will find the Honda more functional and practical(it’s nothing exceptional for a Honda). Also, the Honda CR-V boasts a wider suite of safety and driver assistance features, accessed with better safety ratings in NHTSA and IIHS crash tests.

2022 GMC Terrain vs 2022 Mazda CX-5

The Mazda CX-5 boasts a big displacement and more powerful figures to the 2022 GMC Terrain, and the gap is significant. The on-road manners of the Mazda CX-5 are a tough competition to the Terrain’s underwhelming engine. Though the GMC Terrain wins over the Mazda CX-5 in terms of economy. The cabins in the Mazda are more premium and upmarket, but once the Denali trim is finalized for the Terrain, things are nail-bitingly competitive.

2022 GMC Terrain vs 2022 Toyota RAV4

The 2022 Toyota RAV4 can easily blow the 2022 GMC Terrain out of the water when it comes to performance and economy. Even in terms of interiors, the RAV4 is more practical and functional than being fancy, which doesn’t compromise the level of comfort. The GMC Terrain looks better and more rugged than the RAV4. Also, there’s no comparison to the seriousness of safety when it’s a Toyota badged vehicle. So overall, the Toyota RAV4 is a better pick, it even offers hybrid powertrain options.

2022 GMC Terrain Final Verdict

The 2022 GMC Terrain is definitely the best pick for buyers looking for a crossover SUV with rugged pickup truck alike attire in the front. The updates bring appreciable changes and substantial standard features too. Besides that, the 2022 Terrain carries over the same intense styling, comfortable interiors. The newly added AT4 does add some cosmetic enhancement to the exteriors, but it remains a soft-roader, with a single-engine option only. The Denali trim treatment is worth every dollar, as it raises the premiums and plushness of the 2022 GMC Terrain both inside out.
