Enjoying thriving sales in the full-size division, the GMC Yukon has been one of the most sought-after V8-powered family SUVs out there, at least in the US. The AT4 version is an off-road-oriented model from the line-up, specifically prepared from the factory to cater to those who like to explore the backcountry. As the updated model year is already on the horizon, speculations on what to expect on the 2022 GMC Yukon AT4 have been running wild. Since the SUV had gone through a major overhaul on tech and design the preceding year, we expect the changes to be evolutionary rather than revolutionary.

The main changes we are looking forward to in the 2022 model year are the inclusion of a 12-inch digital instrument cluster as standard and the availability of GMs most powerful 6.2L engine. Showcased as an off-road-ready vehicle in the Yukon lineup, the 2022 GMC Yukon AT4 will only be available in a single standalone trim, only this time with two powertrain options to choose from. The prices are expected to start from around $67,795 and will compete with the likes of Chevrolet Tahoe Z71, Ford Expedition, and Nissan Armada.

6.5/10

The 2022 GMC Yukon AT4 will arrive as the second updated model year for the fifth generation lineup. As to that, we expect the 2022 Yukon AT4 to stay as an off-road prepped standalone trim as the previous model year. Mechanically, a 5.3L V8 and a 10-speed automatic transmission will continue to drive the vehicle in the standard configuration. GMC is also planning to introduce its most powerful engine, the 6.8L V8 in this model year, but we have to wait till the official announcement to get confirmation on that.

As the 2021 Yukon AT4 was an entirely new product, we wouldn't expect any significant changes in the interior package for this year. The only addition that will probably end up coming in the 2022 Yukon AT4 will be the 12-inch digital instrument cluster, which will be a common update for the entire lineup. Besides that, the 2022 Yukon AT4 will feature a bunch of standout standard options, including a 10.2-inch infotainment system, mechanical limited-slip differential, a Tri-zone climate control system, and magnetic ride control system.

Which Trim should you buy?

The AT4 signifies a trim level of the Yukon lineup for the 2022 model year. Therefore, there is only one choice of trim for you to make. However, for this model year, you get two engine options: the first one being a 5.3L V8 and the other being a newly added 6.2L V8. A 10-speed automatic transmission and AWD configuration will be standard affair on both trims. If we were to recommend one, we would most probably go with the regular V8 as it does offer enough punch on more occasions, and going for the bigger displacement will be a huge compromise on fuel economy for the negligible real-world performance gain.

Release date

Going by the trend, expect the updated 2022 GMC Yukon AT4 to reach the dealerships by this fall. As GMC has updated most of their lineup with the 2022 model year SUVs and trucks, it is just a matter of time before the official press release.

2022 GMC Yukon AT4 SUV Engine and Performance

For 2022, the GMC Yukon AT4 will come in as standard with a 5.3L V8. It puts down around 355 horsepower and 383 lb-ft of torque. This motor along with a ten-speed shiftable automatic transmission and standard all-wheel-drive configuration gives this 5,500 lbs machine some serious punch. This means that the standing 60 mph run happens in just 7.1 seconds, which is quite impressive for an SUV that weighs as the moon.

2022 GMC Yukon AT4 SUV driving view

If this does not satisfy you, GMC is also expected to offer their biggest and baddest 6.2L V8 motor this year. This mighty engine manages to breach the 400hp mark and is capable of shaving some seconds off that 0-60 run. Assuming no changes to the standard powertrain in 2022, the 2022 Yukon AT4 will likely be the same with a towing capacity of 8,200 pounds, which is identical to the towing limit of the bigger 6.2L V8.

The 2022's GMC Yukon AT4 will handle just as well as its outgoing model. Unlike most of the full-size SUVs out there, this one is not too stiff nor too soft, thanks to the magnetic ride control here. The ride feels absolutely poised when driving through the freeways at 75 mph and remains composed even if you start closing in the triple-digit marker. The straight-line stability is easily one of the best we have seen for a full-size SUV.

When compared to the competition, the 2022 Yukon AT4 does fall short when it comes to outright acceleration figures. It only manages to surpass the Tahoe, which by the way, shares the same powertrain and weighs more. The Armada, with its powerful V8, manages to post a very impressive 6.3-second run, while the Expedition blows away the competition with a 6.2-second sprint. The twin-turbo setup falls to Ford’s advantage as it boosts up a lot of torque at the lower revs despite having a massive disadvantage when it comes to displacement.

2022 GMC Yukon AT4 SUV Fuel Economy

The 2022 Yukon AT4 will be based on the same mechanicals as its predecessor. Therefore, it is very likely that the MPG figures will remain the same. It will return around 16 MPG in cities and 20 on highways. MPG figures are decent here, but they could be a little better. You will get roughly 18 MPG in combined driving conditions, which is decent but less than some rivals. The fuel tank capacity of the Yukon AT4, on the other hand, will be pretty big like its body, which can hold up to 26 gallons at a time.

In terms of MPG figures, the 2021 Ford Expedition will be on top in this comparison, delivering almost 23 MPG max, thanks to the lower displacement engine. This helps it achieve the best highway tank range despite having a 23.2-gallon tank, which is the smallest on this list. The Yukon and the Tahoe stay in the middle, whereas the Armada, with its higher displacement engine, falls to the bottom of the pack despite having the largest fuel tank.

2022 GMC Yukon AT4 SUV Interior

6.0/10

The 2022 GMC Yukon AT4 will be the perfect SUV for families without the cramped feeling commonly associated with most vehicles. The Yukon is sure to be a favorite with passengers due to its extra space and convenient design. It boasts the widest shoulder and headroom on the first and second rows. Inside the cabin, the user experience will be excellent, thanks to the new 10.2” infotainment system that got upgraded last year. This screen is easy to reach and intuitive to use, and there are various options to keep everyone entertained on long drives. All kinds of phone connectivity features come integrated with the package as well.

2022 GMC Yukon AT4 SUV cockpit area

The AT4 trim will have unique brand accents and badging on the inside. 12-way power-adjustable front seats come standard. Both the front and rear outboard seats are heated. It even comes with a leather steering wheel and perforated leather seats. The third row is spacious, and reaching that section again is relatively easy with almost 38.2 inches of legroom to spare. The second row can be electrically folded down with one press of a button. As standard, the cargo space stands at around 25.5 cubic feet, which is pretty big, and it is Yukon’s one of the major unique selling points. If you fold down the third and second-row seating, the space will increase to 122.9 cubic feet, perfect for a family picnic inside.

The 2022 GMC Yukon AT4 will provide maximum space in the front row and second row in this comparison. When it comes to space, there is no match for the big Yukon AT4. Sharing the same chassis, the Tahoe also manages to be similarly capacious. The Armada and the Expedition even out when it comes to usable cabin space, but with the 16.5-inch trunk, the Armada again falls to the back of the pack. Standout interior features include:

  • Heated, power-adjusting, leather-wrapped steering wheel
  • 12-way power-adjustable front seats
  • 10.2inch touch screen infotainment system
  • 12-inch digital instrument cluster ( expected)
  • Ventilated front seats with heating function
  • Tri-Zone Automatic Climate Control
  • Heated Second-Row Outboard Seats
  • Interior lighting

What’s there to keep you entertained?

The 2022 Yukon AT4 will feature the same infotainment system as its predecessor, but the navigation system could be made standard for 2022 MY. Upfront is a big 10.2-inch infotainment screen with good responsiveness and screen resolution. The user interface with big round icons feels very intuitive, and the phone connectivity features add another layer of convenience. Other than that, the new model is expected to come with a 12" Diagonal Digital Driver Information Center. More features include Bose 9-speaker audio system, Wi-Fi Hotspot, Rear-Seat Media System (optional), Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto Compatibility, Wireless Charging, etc. Some standout infotainment features expected are:

  • 10.2” Touch Screen Display
  • Apple CarPlay & Android Auto
  • Wi-Fi Hotspot
  • Wireless Charging
  • Navigation (Optional)
  • Voice command features
  • Bose 9-Speaker premium speakers

2022 GMC Yukon AT4 SUV Exterior

The exterior of the 2022 GMC Yukon AT4 will appear strong and bold. The SUV has a solid and assertive appearance with a wide signature grille with GMC branding on the front. The sleek and sporty headlights look great with the strong grille. The sides of the SUV are smooth and flow into the back. It looks like the taillights are very small and rectangular, barely sticking out the back.

2022 GMC Yukon AT4 SUV

The ground clearance is great, and it can even be adjusted up to 2 inches according to the needs. It makes sense that an SUV intended for off-roading would have large 20-inch wheels and all-season black-wall tires. However, it is expected that the optional sunroof will become standard on this year's model. Moreover, GMC's hands-free programmable power liftgate is available for added convenience.

In terms of body weight, the heaviest SUV here is the Nissan Armada, weighing almost 5,824 lbs. This does not translate to bigger space as it is the smallest SUV in this comparison when it comes to proportions. The 121-inch wheelbase of the Yukon AT4 falls smack in the middle, but the rest of the dimensions are the biggest in this comparison. The biggest wheelbase of 122.5 has helped the Expedition gain in terms of legroom but falls short when it comes to the shoulder room. Standout exterior features include:

  • LED headlamps with Signature Lighting
  • LED Fog Lamps and tail lamps
  • 20-inch aluminum wheels
  • Hands-Free Programmable Power Liftgate With GMC Logo Projection
  • Heated, Power-Folding Adjustable Mirrors
  • Power Sunroof (optional)

2022 GMC Yukon AT4 SUV Safety

The 2022 GMC Yukon AT4 does share its mechanicals with the current model year, so it is expected to perform similarly on crash tests. The 2021 GMC Yukon series did come out with a 4-star rating by the NHTSA which is a decent score, but not the best. IIHS is yet to test one of these SUVs. In terms of safety features, the Yukon AT4 will be loaded with all the basic and advanced features just like the 2021 MY. We are hoping to see some additional safety features made standard for this year which were earlier kept as optional. Some standout safety features expected are:

  • Automatic Emergency Braking
  • Forward Collision Alert
  • Front Pedestrian Braking
  • Following Distance Indicator
  • Front and Rear Park Assist
  • Rear Pedestrian Alert (Optional)
  • Rear Cross-Traffic Alert
  • Lane Keep Assist With Lane Departure Warning
  • Lane Change Alert With Side Blind Zone Alert
  • HD rear vision camera
  • High Definition Surround Vision (Optional)

2022 GMC Yukon AT4 SUV Competition

2022 GMC Yukon AT4 vs 2021 Nissan Armada

The GMC Yukon AT4 is anticipated to be a little more expensive than the Nissan Armada, which of course favors the latter. Compared to the Yukon, the Armada also has better power and acceleration. Apart from these pointers, the Yukon will beat the Armada in almost all other aspects, be it comfort, space, practicality, and fuel economy. The Yukon AT4's off-road capabilities are far superior to Armada and will stand out in terms of looks as well. If it were our money, the AT4 would definitely be the one we’ll be spending on.

2021 Nissan Armada

2022 GMC Yukon AT4 vs 2021 Chevrolet Tahoe

GMC and Chevy are both under the same umbrella and make nearly identical SUVs. In this case, the Yukon AT4 and Tahoe are almost identical. The looks, spacing, and even performance are ever so slightly better on the GMC than its brother. So it just boils down to what brand you prefer and the way you interpret designs. So we’ll leave that to you.

2021 Chevrolet Tahoe

2022 GMC Yukon AT4 vs 2021 Ford Expedition

The only single place where the Expedition looks superior to that of Yukon AT4 is the fuel economy part. The MPG figures of Expedition are excellent. But, on the other hand, the Yukon AT4 is equipped with a V8 engine and comes with better off-road goodies. Moreover, the GMC also looks more imposing and comes handsomely packed with tech for a similar price. So we don’t see the higher economy figures of the Expedition as a game-changer to choose it over the GMC Yukon AT4.

2021 Ford Expedition

2022 GMC Yukon AT4 SUV Final Verdict

Yes, there are no major flaws that we can see in the upcoming 2022 GMC Yukon AT4 that would deter anyone from buying it. In this price range, you get a great deal of comfort and performance, which is consistent even off-road. Additionally, it has a spacious cabin that can accommodate seven passengers with the biggest cargo in class. You are pretty much looking at the best overall package here, and with the kind of money we expect them to put on it, this should be a blind pick.
