Expert Review, Pricing Analysis and Buying Guide

The GMC Yukon remains one of the most popular large SUVs ever made but has long been criticized for its fuel consumption numbers. The company introduced a turbo-diesel engine to deal with this problem. This diesel model will again target an increase in fuel economy, and a decrease in CO2 emissions while maintaining a substantial overall footprint. It competes against other giants like the Chevrolet Tahoe, Ford Expedition, and Nissan Armada

2022 GMC Yukon diesel SUV Features

Like the previous year’s model, the 2022 GMC Yukon diesel is expected to be offered in three trim levels, which are the SLE, SLT, and the top-line Denali. The off-road-oriented AT4 trim is not available with the diesel engine. Right from its base variant, GM has equipped all trims with a wealth of standard features. These include tri-zone automatic climate control, remote start, a 10.2-inch touch screen, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, six speakers, satellite radio, HD Radio, a Wi-Fi hot spot, six USB ports, and Bluetooth.

A variety of driver assistance features are included, such as Teen Driver, a rearview camera, rear-seat reminder, forward collision warning, and automatic emergency braking. Many models have front and rear parking sensors, as well. In addition, GM offers a Pro Safety Plus Package that features blind-spot monitoring, lane keep assist, lane departure warning, and rear cross-traffic alert.

Despite the base trim's long list of amenities, we recommend the SLT trim if you want the best features. The SLE trim provides additional comfort and convenience features including heated and ventilated front seats and leather upholstery. Furthermore, with the SLT you have access to a variety of technologies not available on the base trim.

2022 GMC Yukon Diesel Release date

We expect the 2022 GMC Yukon Diesel to be released by the end of this year and available for pre-order in early 2022.

2022 GMC Yukon diesel SUV Engine and Performance

It is well known that the last generation of GM's Yukon dominated the road with its Duramax Turbo-Diesel I-6 engine. The power figures are expected to remain the same in the Yukon in 2022. This iconic powertrain of the Yukon delivers 277 horsepower and 460 pound-foot of torque. We expect the Duramax turbo-diesel engine to be paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission as in its predecessor. The ride quality of this GMC SUV is excellent, no matter what surface you travel over. A fairly easy vehicle to drive, the Yukon is relatively easy to maneuver despite its size.

2022 GMC Yukon diesel SUV Front Angle View

With an award-winning performance and efficiency rating, the 3.0L Duramax Turbo-Diesel engine is a no-frills powertrain that maximizes efficiency without sacrificing capability. With this diesel breed in the Yukon line-up, 0-60 mph can be reached in less than 8.5 seconds. In addition, in the Denali trim, you'll get Magnetic Ride Control, an advanced suspension system that adjusts the suspension setup based on how the road is.

With a diesel engine, GMC Yukon stands out among the competition. However, its gasoline-powered rivals do much better and deliver remarkable numbers. Additionally, the GMC Yukon diesel is the slowest of the lot, although it has impressive torque at lower rpm. In terms of speed, the Nissan Armada is the fastest. It alongside the Chevrolet Tahoe is almost 3 seconds quicker than the GMC and records a top speed of 120 MPH, which is also the segment standard.

2022 GMC Yukon diesel SUV Fuel Economy

It should be no surprise that the 2022 Yukon diesel will also perform well, based on the 2021 Yukon diesel's impressive mpg figures. It performs much better than its gas-powered counterparts. A Yukon's fuel consumption during city driving is 21 mpg, its highway mileage is 27 mpg, and its combined mileage is 23 mpg. On top of that, the Yukon is equipped with a 26.0-gallon fuel tank, giving you enough fuel to go 590 miles between fill-ups.

In comparison with the GMC cousins powered by diesel engines, gas-powered machines cannot compete. The fuel economy is significantly better than Ford and Nissan on all roads and during all driving conditions. With a fuel-efficient engine, the Ford Expedition comes in second place among diesel machines and is the most fuel-efficient gas-powered vehicle in the segment. The Nissan Armada, however, is a complete disappointment, even when we consider its heavyweight averaging just 15 MPG and a range close to 400 miles, while the GMC almost breaches the 600-mile mark.

2022 GMC Yukon diesel SUV Interior

With the innovative styling of interior design, the 2022 GMC Yukon provides a luxurious and comfortable ride that you will enjoy for years to come. You will enjoy long-lasting comfort, smoothness, and quietness. With the Yukon diesel, you get heated seats, a rearview camera, 60/40 fold second-row seats, a dual-zone climate control system that cools you from front to back, and a remote engine start that enables you to heat or cool your vehicle in the mornings when the temperature is low.

2022 GMC Yukon diesel SUV Dashboard

It comes with a standard three-row seating arrangement that accommodates eight passengers, or seven with the second-row bucket seats available. There is plenty of headroom and legroom in each row for adults to ride comfortably. As one of the best cargo haulers on the market, the new Yukon lives up to its billing. With its standard third-row seats, the Yukon provides 25.5 cubic feet of cargo space. Those figures increase to 72.6 cubic feet when the third row is folded down, and 122.9 cubic feet when the second and third rows are folded down.

Seating space is the most demanding factor when it comes to full-size SUVs. And as such, all the aforementioned SUVs come with an abundance of space except the Nissan Armada. The GMC Yukon and Chevy Tahoe are the most spacious offerings and they boast near-identical dimensions too, offering space for eight adults. Ford Expedition has slightly cramped rear rows when compared to the GM cousins. However, both contemporaries of the GMC twins come with a smaller trunk. Some of the noteworthy interior features of the 2022 GMC Yukon Diesel include:

  • Power-Tilt and Telescoping Steering Column
  • Power-Sliding Center Console
  • Tri-Zone Automatic Climate Controls
  • First- and Second-Row Perforated Leather Seating Surfaces
  • Heated and Ventilated Driver and Front-Passenger Seats
  • Third-Row 60/40 Split Power-Folding Bench Seat
  • Heated, Leather-Wrapped Steering Wheel

2022 GMC Yukon features a 10.2-inch touchscreen infotainment system, and top-end trims offer navigation. With its large, easy-to-see touch screen, the driver can see and use it from the front seat with little trouble. Likewise, the interface is intuitive, so there isn't much of a learning curve. It features a six-speaker audio system that can be upgraded to a 14-speaker Centerpoint surround sound system. Additionally, there is an available rear-seat entertainment system with dual 10.6-inch 1080p touchscreens. The 2022 GMC Yukon Diesel infotainment includes the following features:

  • 10.2" Diagonal Premium GMC Infotainment System
  • 8" Diagonal Digital Driver Information Center

2022 GMC Yukon diesel SUV Exterior

The 2022 Yukon will embody the sleek, precise, and technologically advanced style of GMC. Intentionally crafted for the Modern Explorer, refined for every journey. While it underwent some substantial design changes for the 2021MY, we expect it to boast the same silhouette for 2022 MY too. The Yukon Diesel has been designed with a lower beltline, sleek profile, and sculpted rear fender flares. In the back, dual aluminum-accented skid plates surround the fuel tank and exhaust help create a rugged look that's backed up by a durable steel frame.

2022 GMC Yukon diesel SUV Front Angle View

The 2022 GMC Yukon Diesel will have a bolder grille, a new hood with large air vents, and full LED headlamps. The wheel arches are rounded out more, making the wheel well openings stand out more prominently at the corners. The front of the car also takes on a more streamlined appearance by drawing some of the lines of the side mirrors further towards the back of the vehicle, some lines being completely new while others being restyled. The Yukon's bold styling is at home wherever it goes. It comes standard with aerodynamic front and rear fascias, signature LED daytime running lights, chrome mirror caps, painted door handles, body-color bumpers, and more.

While the GMC Yukon Diesel looks ruggedest here, the Chevy is sleekest. While the Ford Expedition is a bit crude-looking, it still outperforms the old-style Armada in terms of overall appearance. In terms of practicality and off-road capability, the Armada, however, offers the best value. Highlights of 2022 GMC Yukon Diesel’s exterior include:

  • LED Signature Lighting (Headlamps/Taillamps)
  • LED Fog Lamps
  • Heated, Power-Folding Adjustable Mirrors
  • Rainsense Windshield Wipers
  • Assist Steps, Black With Gloss-Black Inserts
  • 20" 6-Spoke Polished Aluminum Wheels

2022 GMC Yukon diesel SUV Safety

Considering the 2022 GMC Yukon Diesel has not yet been launched, we will consider the safety aspects with regards to its predecessor. No crash tests have been conducted by NHTSA or IIHS for the 2021 Yukon Diesel. However, the NHTSA rated the gasoline-powered 2021 GMC Yukon four out of five stars in the crash test. A four-star rating is recorded overall for Yukon 2021.

According to reports, the 2022 GMC Yukon will be a lot safer than its predecessor, since it will have a multitude of safety features, plus the GMC Pro Safety Plus suite will be standard on all models, at no extra cost. The 2022 GMC Yukon Diesel is expected to come with the same features since the diesel remains largely the same except for the powertrain. With upscale features like a forward collision alert with automatic braking and a surround camera system with a dynamic perspective, it is easy to stay focused on the road. Among the notable features are:

  • High-Definition surround vision camera
  • Standard Forward Collision Alert
  • Lane Change Alert with Side Blind Zone Alert
  • Rear Cross-Traffic Alert
  • Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning
  • High-strength side-door guard beams

2022 GMC Yukon diesel SUV Competition

2022 GMC Yukon Diesel vs 2021 Chevrolet Tahoe

Yukon and Tahoe are two of the finest SUVs of the new generation! They are both solid choices, however. Chevy Tahoe's for 2021 is also completely redesigned, just like the Yukon. The two large SUVs are similar in many ways.

2021 Chevrolet Tahoe

The two vehicles have similar cargo capacities, similar passenger accommodations, comparable features, and comparable powertrains. In general, the Yukon comes with a spacious and upscale interior, especially in the Denali trim, while the Tahoe is more reliable.

2022 GMC Yukon Diesel vs the 2021 Ford Expedition

Truth to be told, the Ford Expedition consistently ranks as the top large SUV in the class, and it is ahead of the GMC Yukon. Both have similar safety features, including an active park assist system and adaptive cruise control.

2021 Ford Expedition

In comparison to the Yukon, the Ford Expedition in 2021 is a much better choice due to its powerful and responsive engine. Although the Yukon is significantly more fuel-efficient, it also has substantially more interior space. Neither machine differs much in how it handles or drives. In the end, it boils down to a choice between diesel and gas engines.

2022 GMC Yukon Diesel vs the 2021 Nissan Armada

Yukon and Armada have long been competitors for the top spot among family utility vehicles. It is nevertheless a very simple comparison. In addition to looking old on the outside, the Nissan Armada feels and drives old on the inside as well.

2021 Nissan Armada

Yukons with diesel engines are more fuel-efficient, spacious, and luxurious. Last year, the Yukon diesel was also redesigned and updated and comes with a lot more features and luxury, as well as a better-looking dash layout.

2022 GMC Yukon diesel SUV Final Verdict

The GMC Yukon Diesel is impressive on the outside, and even better on the inside. It provides maximum towing capability, best-in-class fuel economy, room for up to nine passengers, and innovative third-row seating. In light of all the similar underpinnings expected for the 2022 model, we think the SUV will serve as a good family commuting vehicle.
