The bigger the platform the better the showstopper for performance is something that has become analogous to the GMC and its nameplate. It has been among those brands who have been in dominance in the utility segment for quite a long time with either their pickup trucks or purpose-specific SUVs. The facets are not going to change any time soon as it is coming with its 2022 GMC Yukon XL Denali to meet the expectations it has been aspiring for.

The GMC Yukon XL Denali is the extension of the model which was first introduced in 2021 as it was completely redesigned for that year. So, there are no major changes that can be expected as of now in the SUV and it will offer similar specs as before most probably. In the segment, it competes with rivals like Ford Expedition, Toyota Land Cruiser, and Chevrolet Suburban and the close call among them is pretty interesting to watch out for the final favorite.

2022 GMC Yukon XL Denali SUV Features

The 2022 GMC Yukon XL Denali will be, assumingly, priced at $71,100 for a rear-wheel-drive system and $74,100 for the all-wheel-drive-equipped one. In 2021 MY, the Yukon XL received various updates in the exterior and interior realms of its cabin and silhouette. There is no dearth of features in the SUV as the brand has significantly loaded it with all the modern bells and whistles about which we have already speculated that it has the perspective to retain almost all those assists and bondages. While the Denali gets a Bose 14-speaker premium sound system, a 15.0-inch head-up display, HD surround vision camera, integrated Navigation system, and power-release second-row bucket seatas standard the buyers can also opt for four optional packages available with it. The 10.2" diagonal GMC Premium Infotainment System is so stark in its view that one would first notice it at the first glance as soon as he/she enters the cabin.

Be it contrast or convenience, the Yukon XL Denali has the caliber to keep you satiated with your urge and desires. Power heating and ventilating functions for the seats along with Tri-zone automatic climate control are the surefire tests of the above-stated claim. The clan does entice you with its optional safety assists which include the mentions of the Adaptive Cruise Control, Trailer Side Blind Zone Alert, and Inclination sensor. It could have been more impressive if they can be availed of as a standard feature rather than an extra buck expense. On the whole, if we have to sum up this section it will end on a positive note for the upcoming model.

Which Trim Should You Buy?

The buyers of the GMC Yukon XL Denali can only choose from one trim option on offer with a choice between AWD and RWD. Both the variants host a similar engine and transmission but the EPA figures of the AWD system dip by one digit. The additional packages on offer are pretty decent which entail the names of the Denali Premium Package, Advanced Technology Package, Max Trailering Package, and Cargo Convenience package. These packages add up to the luxury of the vehicle by offering features like panoramic power sunroof as well as power-retractable assist steps with perimeter lighting, Enhanced Automatic Emergency Braking, Advanced Security Package, and much more. While the pricing of the Yukon XL Denali may be towards the higher side, it does come with a lot of features offering a comfortable and luxurious hauling along with a powerful ride with its 6.2L V8 engine. So it is advisable to own it in AWD layout.

2022 GMC Yukon XL Denali Release Date

The 2022 GMC Yukon XL Denali is expected to be at dealerships in the summer of 2021 but there has been no official announcement yet so it would be reasonable to wait for a while.

2022 GMC Yukon XL Denali SUV Engine and Performance

7.0/10

Powering the 2022 GMC Yukon XL Denali is a 6.2L Gas V8 engine. The maximum power and torque outputs by this engine stand at 420 hp and 460 lb-ft respectively. As standard, the car is available with a rear-wheel-drive option but one’s inclination for better traction and grip can be quenched as well with an all-wheel-drive setup with a little more investment. This SUV is connected to a 10-speed automatic gearbox which is electronically controlled with overdrive. There are a few understandings that might be enlightening for us to discover its true potential.

2022 GMC Yukon XL Denali SUV

The mid-rev band of 4100 rpm to 5600 rpm for the power-torque graph allows it to sustain the middle ground with its subtle variation across performance, towing, and long drive practicality at consistent high-speed maneuvering. On top of that, the sheer loudness of such a powerful V8 will be a cherishing one to experience.

The much anticipated 6.2L Gas V8 enginepowering the Yukon XL Denali helps the car pick up pace effortlessly. The rivals on the other hand are also parallel and share the same reputation. Most of the rivals are priced significantly higher for what’s on offer, at least on paper, except for the Suburban High Country which is a mirror image of the former. Talking about acceleration the XL Denali is left behind by the Suburban as it marks the 0-60 MPH in 5.1 seconds whereas the XL Denali did it in 6.5 seconds. Though the Land Cruiser Heritage Edition gets a smaller engine, it still covered the quarter-mile in a much shorter time than its rivals which is worth mentioning. The Ford Expedition is the only V6 engine available in the segment and manages to compete head-on with its rivals.

2022 GMC Yukon XL Denali SUV Fuel Economy

9.0/10

The Yukon XL Denali gets claimed fuel economy figures of 16 MPG and 20 MPG for city and highway usage respectively. The combined fuel economy figure meanwhile stands at 18 MPG. On the all-wheel-drive system, the EPA figures drop by one mile per gallon thus returning 15MPG in the city,19MPG on the highway, and17 MPG on combined usage. The car gets a large 28-gallon fuel tank thus giving it a decent overall range of more than 640 miles in ideal conditions. The figures are that of the 2021 model and we suspect them to be the same even for the 2022 model, considering that there are no changes to the powertrain with the latest iteration.

The fuel economy offered by the Yukon XL Denali is decent but rivals like the Ford Expedition MAX Platinum get a better return as well as a better range in a single refueling status. Among its rivals, the Toyota Land Cruiser Heritage Edition performs the worst in the fuel efficiency segment returning up to 13/17/14 mpg at the max, and when coupled with its considerably smaller tank it gets even more underwhelming with the least range on offer with figures at 320/418/344 miles. Therefore, for this specific domain, we highly praise the Ford Expedition MAX Platinum which is closely followed by the GMC Yukon XL Denali.

2022 GMC Yukon XL Denali SUV Interior

9.0/10

The 2022 GMC Yukon XL Denali is expected to offer the same comfortable seating for 8 people inside it as that of its previous management. The interior of Denali has seen an all-new interior design along with an instrument panel which in conjunction give a luxury and comfort-oriented cabin to its buyers, as per its 2021 model, which is going to maintain their relevance with high probability in the newer format. It engenders the fact that the Denali model will continue the exclusive interior themes with a choice of four exemplary colors as well. All the themes feature premium leather seating along with the Denali exclusive fractal stitching and wooden styling. Adding to this narration, the power-adjustable seats in the front are also pretty comfortable and have high cushioning making one snuggle easily.

The interior has been well crafted and feels pretty refined with all kinds of accents it comes equipped with. Optional features like Heated and Ventilated Front Seats, Heated Steering Wheel, and Heated Second-Row Bucket Seats along with standard features like Tri-zone Automatic Climate Controls, Acoustic-Laminated Windshield, and Front-Door Windows upgrade the driving experience of the XL Denali and that is why we don’t see them disappearing in the 2022 model. Apart from the expectations, there are a few assets that are definite facts as the SUV offers a big 41.5cubic feet cargo space which is among the most spacious in the lineup. After three seats are folded down capacity can be further increased to 144.7 cubic feet.

The in-cabin experience offered by the GMC Yukon XL Denali is impressive and the space is one of the best in the segment. It is worth noting that this offers the most balanced and comfortable rear seat experience along with a roomy third row. Among the rivals, Chevrolet Suburban High Country offers similar specs as that of the XL Denali while Toyota Land Cruiser Heritage Edition is the one with the least interior space on offer. Talking about the cargo, Toyota clinches the top spot but XL Denali and Suburban High Country are right there standing beside it, with diminutive differences in the holding capacity.

Some of the interior features are mentioned below:

  • Power-Tilt and Telescopic Steering Column
  • High Definition surround vision camera
  • Heated and leather-wrapped steering wheel
  • Front bucket seats with lumbar support
  • Rear heated & power-adjustable seats
  • Three-zone automatic climate control
  • Second-Row Power-Release Bench
  • Panoramic Sunroof

What’s there to keep you entertained?

As mentioned earlier, there will be hardly any changes in the newer model so we can expect most of the features in the same stream of flow. A 10.2-inch floating premium GMC infotainment screen is going to be offered with the GMC Yukon XL Denali. This diagonal premium GMC infotainment system will be available with standard advanced features like WiFi hotspot, advanced navigation, and downloadable in-vehicle apps in the XL Denali along with other features like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Bluetooth connectivity, and digital radio.

Moreover, the rear of the vehicle will feature dual 12.6-inch diagonal high-definition touch-screens with assists like screen sharing and that can be tilted too. The audio output from the 14-speaker setup from Bose with Centerpoint surround sound will be as impressive as ever, being one of the best in the segment.

2022 GMC Yukon XL Denali SUV Exterior

8.0/10

Yukon XL Denali boasts a neat design and showcases its egoism for a bold road presence all along. The neat lines and plain surfaces give it a nice and elegant curvature thus appealing to a lot of buyers. The front fascia LED headlamps and taillamps with signature C-Shape lightning are in the vocabulary of all sorts of poetic rhythm. On the side profile, it gets a standard 18-inch 6-Spoke Machined wheel and is also available with 22-inch Bright-Machined Aluminum with Premium.

2022 GMC Yukon XL Denali SUV

The satin chrome grille, bodyside molding, and door handles give it a classy and radiant look when viewed isometrically. Along with all this, it is also available with four-corner air ride adaptive suspensions offering a decent and comfortable ride. Since it is a short note description of the 2021 model, keep yourself at peace as we would certainly witness the same in the upcoming model with no change at all.

As far as the external dimensions are concerned the Toyota Land Cruiser is the lightest and the smallest SUV in this lineup which translates to the science of low body leaning around the corners and relatively more constrained forward dive during hard braking. Among its rivals, the XL Denali is the longest and widest car in the segment with the Chevrolet Suburban getting somewhat similar numbers here as well, meaning they will parallel in terms of their handling and dynamics pursuits to a large extent. Some of the exterior highlights include the following:

  • 20.0-inch aluminum wheels
  • LED Signature lightings
  • LED fog lamps
  • Heated power folding adjustable mirrors
  • Power liftgate
  • Adaptive suspension

2022 GMC Yukon XL Denali SUV Safety

6.0/10

The GMC Yukon XL Denali has received a four-star overall ratingwith 3 starsin rollover resistance from NHTSA for its 2021 model. Unfortunately, it hasn’t been tested byIIHS yet. Thus based on the above rating we can see that the 2022 model will at least have the same resilience if not better. Apart from structural strength, the tech assists like the GMC Pro Safety Plus will likely be downstream only with which alertness will be at the peak. This SUV also gets various safety features like automatic emergency braking, forward collision mitigation that warns the driver of an impending collision and also applies the brakes if needed, a lane-keeping system that makes few steering corrections assisting the driver in keeping the car in the lane. Along with these features, Adaptive cruise control is also available that maintains driver set distance to the car in front while cruising and much more. Some of the standout safety features are:

  • Automatic emergency braking
  • Forward collision alert
  • Front pedestrian braking
  • Following distance indicator
  • Front and rear park assist
  • IntelliBeam-auto high beams
  • Lane change alert with side blind-zone alert
  • Lane-keeping assist with lane departure warning
  • Rear cross-traffic alert

2022 GMC Yukon XL Denali VS 2021 Ford Expedition MAX Platinum

Priced higher than the XL Denali, at $75,335, the Ford Expedition is an impressive SUV in the segment. The Ford Expedition gets a Twin-Turbo V6 engine which offers quite inferior performance specs when compared to the XL Denali but in terms of fuel efficiency, it is the better pick than the former by a mile. So performance-oriented consumers may sway towards the Yukon while the economy-orientation will favor the Expedition.

2021 Ford Expedition MAX Platinum

2022 GMC Yukon XL Denali VS 2021 Toyota Land Cruiser Heritage Edition

The Toyota Land Cruiser is priced ridiculously higher than the Yukon at $85,655and features a5.7L V8engine. The engine offered is much smaller in capacity thus less powerful when compared with the Yukon. On top of that, the mileage return of the Yukon is also one of a class that boosts its practicality without compromising its performance curve. Space management also widens the gap between the two making the Yukon a clear favorite without any confusion.

2021 Toyota Land Cruiser Heritage Edition

2022 GMC Yukon XL Denali VS 2021 Chevrolet Suburban High Country

The Chevy Suburban is priced somewhere near the Yukon XL Denali and features a 6.2L V8engine under its hood. In terms of performance, it has similar engine output specs along with better acceleration than the former. The Chevrolet Suburban has similar EPA figures and fuel tank capacity thus the same overall range as that of the GMC Yukon. But in terms of appearance, the XL Denali is better looking with a bolder appeal. So, one would give a slight preference to the Yukon over the Suburban.

2022 GMC Yukon XL Denali SUV Final Verdict

With the 2021 model upgrade, the XL Denalireceives various new features in its interior and exterior design which looks very appealing like the introduction of Denali-exclusive interior impresses the buyers. It offers several standard safety techs like GMC Pro Safety Plusas standardand much on the optional lists, thus scoring high in the safety department. It offers pretty decent drive quality and an excellent cabin experience. The XL Denaliis among the best performance articles in the segment with pretty decent EPA figures. Therefore it surely makes it to our cart and first preference.
