The GMC Yukon XL is a full-size SUV offering comfortable seating for eight people and comes incorporated with high-tech features and modern amenities inside. The 2022 GMC Yukon XL carries over to 2022 without any major changes or upgrades as it was fully redesigned for 2021. However, the offroad-oriented AT4 trim is confirmed to get the stronger 6.2L V8 engine as an option which earlier was exclusive for the top-end Denali trim. The engines are powerful, and the feature set is impressive as it comes coupled with impressive safety tech. So let’s see how the 2022 Yukon XL fares against its rivals.

Expert Review, Pricing Analysis and Buying Guide

The 2022 GMC Yukon XL is available in four trim options three of which are available in both 2WD as well as 4WD configurations while the more rugged AT4 trim is exclusively 4WD. There are two V8 engines on offer, the stronger 6.2-liter one is exclusive to the higher-end trims while all models come equipped with the same 10-speed automatic transmission. Prices start at around $55,395 for the base model and climb up to more than $75,995 for the top-end trim. The 2022 GMC Yukon XL competes with the Ford Expedition MAX, Toyota Sequoia, and the Nissan Armada

2022 GMC Yukon XL SUV Features

The 2022 GMC Yukon XL is available in four trim options which are SLE, SLT, AT4, and Denali. The base SLE and SLT and AT4 trims are powered by a 5.3 L V8 engine mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission. The top-end Denali trim is powered by a stronger 6.2 L V8 engine coupled with the same transmission. This engine is optional for the AT4 trim. The base SLE, mid-level SLT, and the top-end Denali trims are available in both 2WD as well as 4WD drivetrain configurations while the AT4 is 4WD as standard.

The SLE trim doesn’t get any packages other than the Max Trailering Package while there is a lot on offer with the SLT trim. These include the SLT Luxury and Luxury Plus Package both of which provide a plethora of features. The AT4 trim gets the AT4 Premium Plus Package, Technology Package, and the Premium Capability Package with Active Response 4WD. We Recommend

It is best to opt for the mid-level SLT trim of the 2022 GMC Yukon XL. It is more feature-rich compared to the base trim while being much less expensive than the higher-end Denali trim. The SLT Luxury or Luxury Plus Packages would be a nice addition to this trim as they add some extra luxury and functionality features. For people who need better offroad performance, you could go for the AT4 which is much more rugged and also gets the optional 6.2 L V8 engine. It is also the best-looking trim in the Yukon XL lineup.

2022 GMC Yukon XL Release Date

The 2022 GMC Yukon XL is expected to arrive by the end of 2021 or the beginning of 2022.

2022 GMC Yukon XL SUV Engine and Performance

The 2022 GMC Yukon XL comes with two engine options. The base SLE, SLT, and AT4 trims are powered by a 5.3 L V8 engine mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission producing 355 hp and 383 lb-ft of maximum power and torque. Standard in the Denali and optional with the AT4 trim is a stronger 6.2 L V8 engine putting out 420 hp and 460 lb-ft mated to the same transmission. The SLE, SLT, and Denali models are RWD as standard while 4WD is optional whereas the AT4 trim is exclusively 4WD. The Yukon XL can reach a speed of 60 mph in 6.0 seconds and cross the quarter or a mile in 14.5 seconds.

2022 GMC Yukon XL 5.3L V8 Engine

The straight-line figures are impressive, but the handling is as expected from an SUV of its size. It is hard to maneuver in the city environment and tight spaces while around corners, grip and stability are not enough to keep this one planted. The independent rear suspension setup offers an impressive ride quality and the Yukon XL just glides over undulations of the road. The AT4 and Denali trims are offered with an available Four-Corner Air Ride Adaptive Suspension which makes the ride even smoother. The Yukon XL also comes with an impressive 8,400 lbs towing capacity which would come to use if you want to take your trailer along with you on long or short trips.

The Nissan Armada is the most powerful one here while also being the least expensive one making it the most value for money option. The GMC Yukon XL and the Ford Expedition MAX and Nissan Armada are all very advanced and powerful SUVs in the segment. They perform very similarly in straight lines while the Toyota lags behind. However, the Nissan is still the standout performer as it comes with a higher top speed and is a bit faster to 60mph.

2022 GMC Yukon XL SUV Fuel Economy

The 2022 GMC Yukon XL is as expected a gas guzzler, but being an updated redesigned SUV, the Yukon XL is comparatively more fuel-efficient compared to the competition. It puts out an efficiency of 15 mpg in the city, 19 on the highway, and a combined efficiency of 17 mpg. The Denali trim with the 6.2 L trim drops the fuel economy to 14, 19, and 16 mpg respectively. Combined with a 28.0-gallon fuel capacity, the Yukon XL outputs a maximum range of 420 miles in the city, 532 on the highway, and a range of around 476 miles in the combined road and driving conditions.

The Ford Expedition MAX with the smaller yet powerful V6 engine is the most efficient one here followed by the Yukon XL. It is the same order in terms of the range also, as the Ford has a large 25.0-gallon fuel capacity. The Ford also has the largest fuel capacity and delivers the most combined range above 500 miles. The Nissan performs very similarly to the Toyota in terms of fuel economy but is slightly better. Overall the GMC is a comparatively efficient machine with a huge range.

2022 GMC Yukon XL SUV Interior

The GMC Yukon XL has a spacious interior that is plenty luxurious, extremely spacious, and comes with a lot of features inside. The base SLE trim comes standard with tri-zone automatic climate control as standard along with cloth upholstery. The SLT trim gets upgraded perforated leather seating surfaces for the first and second rows along with heated and ventilated seats for the driver and front passenger. The AT4 trim features a Jet Black interior with AT4-exclusive Brandy accents. The top-end Denali trim further gets a leather-wrapped, heated steering wheel and heated second-row seats along with Denali-exclusive interior color themes along with a Denali-exclusive instrument panel.

2022 GMC Yukon XL Dashboard

A panoramic sunroof is not a standard feature even in the Denali trim while it is an available feature in the SLT trim and upwards. There is ample space in the front and second rows while the third row could also seat adults. The seats are comfortable and supportive, but the driver seat lacks adjustability which is a drawback. The base SLE trim lacks a power-tilt and telescoping steering column which is an issue, but then it is rectified in the higher trims. The cargo capacity in the GMC Yukon XL is class-leading and you can carry all of your necessary luggage along during long trips. Overall the GMC Yukon XL has a luxurious and premium quality interior made up of quality materials.

The 2022 GMC Yukon XL has the overall most spacious interior while also offers the most cargo area. The Nissan is, however, the least spacious option here as it comes with a cramped third row and the lowest cargo capacity. The interior is of good quality inside all of these machines while the Toyota looks old and outdated. The GMC’s Denali trim looks the most luxurious and the Nissan’s interior looks the freshest and updated. The following are some of the most important interior features of the 2022 GMC Yukon XL-

  • Tri-Zone Automatic Climate Controls
  • First- and Second-Row Perforated Leather Seating Surfaces
  • Heated and Ventilated Driver and Front-Passenger Seats
  • Third-Row 60/40 Split Power-Folding Bench Seat
  • Heated, Leather-Wrapped Steering Wheel
  • Power-Tilt and -Telescoping Steering Column
  • Power-Sliding Center Console

How intuitive is the car’s infotainment unit?

The 2021 GMC Yukon XL is equipped with a 10.2-inch touchscreen infotainment unit as standard in all trims and it is added with navigation in the top-end Denali trim. The infotainment unit doesn’t have the best graphics but it is intuitive, responsive, and easy to use. The audio unit is a 6-speaker system that is upgraded to a 9-speaker Bose unit in the SLT trim while the top-end Denali trim gets an even more premium 14-Speaker Centerpoint surround sound system.

2022 GMC Yukon XL Infotainment System

To keep the rear passengers occupied and entertained, there is an available rear-seat entertainment system consisting of dual 12.6-inch touchscreens of full HD (1080p) resolution. The higher-end trims could also be equipped with a 15-inch HUD which adds some extra functionality. The following are the prominent infotainment features in the Yukon XL-

  • 10.2" Diagonal Premium GMC Infotainment System
  • 8" Diagonal Digital Driver Information Center
  • Multicolor 15" Diagonal Head-Up Display
  • Android Auto and Apple CarPlay
  • 4G LTE Wi-Fi Hotspot
  • Bose 9-Speaker Audio System
  • SiriusXM With 360L - All Access Package with a 3-Month trial subscription

2022 GMC Yukon XL SUV Exterior

The GMC Yukon XL which was redesigned in 2021, now looks much better. The AT4 is definitely the best-looking one with the AT4-specific front design featuring a skid plate. This not only looks better but also increases the approach angle to nearly 32 degrees. That along with the 20-inch Goodyear all-terrain tires, and a distinct exterior design with black chrome accents make the AT4 look impressive. The SLE and SLT trim looks pretty much the same from the outside while the Denali is more flashy and covered in chrome. The Denali trim could also be equipped with power-retractable assist steps with perimeter lighting, making the Yukon XL more ergonomic and better accessible.

2022 GMC Yukon XL Three Quarter View

The base SLE trim gets 18-inch 6-spoke machined aluminum wheels with dark gray metallic accents while the SLT trim gets larger 20-inch 6-spoke polished wheels whereas the AT4 trim comes with 20-inch 6-Spoke machined aluminum wheels with carbon gray metallic accents. The Denali trim gets 6-spoke multidimensional polished wheels as standard while there are also huge 22-inch bright machined wheels with premium paint available to equip. The Yukon XL is available in ten different shades of various textures including metallic, tri-coat, and tint coat. Overall, the Yukon XL is still one of the best-looking ones in the segment.

The GMC Yukon XL looks the best in my personal opinion while the Ford Expedition is also a sleek executive SUV. The Toyota looks old and outdated while the Nissan looks fresh and futuristic, just like their interiors. The Toyota and the Nissan are also heavier than the other duo. The GMC being both the most spacious one and maintaining a lower weight is an impressive feat and the same is the case with the Ford which is the lightest one here. The following are the prominent exterior features of the 2022 GMC Yukon XL-

  • LED Signature Lighting (Headlamps/Taillamps)
  • LED Fog Lamps
  • Heated, Power-Folding Adjustable Mirrors
  • Rainsense Windshield Wipers
  • Assist Steps, Black With Gloss-Black Inserts
  • 20" 6-Spoke Polished Aluminum Wheels

2022 GMC Yukon XL SUV Safety

The 2022 GMC Yukon XL is a very safe vehicle and it has been safety tested by NHTSA. NHTSA has awarded the 2022 Yukon XL with an overall safety rating of 4-stars. It further gets all 5-star ratings for side safety while the lowest score it received is 3-stars for rollover protection which is expected from a huge SUV of its size. However, the Yukon XL is surely a very safe vehicle and the driver assistance tech and safety features incorporated into it also concretes that fact. The following are the most important safety features inside the 2022 GMC Yukon XL-

  • Forward Collision Alert
  • Front Pedestrian Braking
  • Following Distance Indicator
  • Front and Rear Park Assist
  • Lane Change Alert With Side Blind Zone Alert
  • Lane Keep Assist With Lane Departure Warning
  • Rear Cross-Traffic Alert
  • Rear Pedestrian Alert
  • Enhanced Automatic Emergency Braking

2022 GMC Yukon XL SUV Competition

2022 GMC Yukon XL vs 2021 Ford Expedition MAX

The 2021 Ford Expedition MAX is a superb vehicle offered at an amazing price. But compared to the mid-level SLT trim of the Yukon XL, to get similar features you will have to pay much more if you opt for the Expedition. The Expedition offers a powerful engine which the Yukon XL also delivers, but the Ford has a more efficient powertrain. The GMC is overall more spacious and also offers more cargo area. Among these machines, you could choose any and you would be satisfied with either.

2021 Ford Expedition MAX Three Quarter View

2022 GMC Yukon XL vs 2022 Toyota Sequoia

The 2022 Toyota Sequoia is a disappointing machine compared to the Yukon XL. The Yukon XL is more powerful, faster, better looking, and more spacious. It also offers better fuel economy figures compared to the Toyota. The interior of the Sequoia looks outdated and doesn’t have the charm that is present inside the GMC. The GMC Yukon XL also has a much better infotainment unit along with much more luxury features available. All of this means that the GMC Yukon XL is a much better choice compared to the Toyota Sequoia.

2022 Toyota Sequoia Three Quarter View

2022 GMC Yukon XL vs 2022 Nissan Armada

The 2022 Nissan Armada is a great vehicle offered an impressive price. It comes with a refreshed interior and exterior that looks updated and futuristic. The Armada is also the most powerful among these machines while the performance difference is marginal. The GMC is much more spacious on the inside especially in the third row while the third row of the Armada is cramped. These positives make the Yukon XL a better choice compared to the Nissan Armada.

2022 Nissan Armada Three Quarter View

2022 GMC Yukon XL SUV Final Verdict

The 2022 GMC Yukon XL is a superb vehicle with an impressive feature set and a good-looking exterior. The powertrains offered are both capable and strong while there are also great trim options on offer at various price ranges. The interior is luxurious and extremely spacious and it provides a class-leading luggage space. The fuel economy is also impressive considering the size of the vehicle and its engine. These are all enough reasons to choose the GMC Yukon XL in this segment.
