The entry-level sedan space is inarguably one of the most competitive segments in the market. Almost every automaker has an offering in this segment. However, the one car that has been ruling the segment for years together is the Honda Civic. The Civic is one of the most popular and sought-after cars in the segment credit to its performance, reliability, and practicality. Other Automakers have been trying hard to dethrone the Civic from the top spot but haven’t been able to do so and the Civic continues to be a popular choice for buyers in the segment.

Performance, driving dynamics, reliability, and quality are often talked about as the reason behind the Civic’s success. However, the interior of the sedan never gets the credit that it rightfully deserves. The Civic has always been a comfortable car and it does the job of carrying its passengers around comfortably. In this review, we talk about the interior of the 2014 Honda Civic and explore all that it has got on offer.

2014 Honda Civic Interior Design, Dimensions, and Comfort

The 2014 Honda Civic’s interior feels quite upscale for a car in its segment. The cabin features nice grained plastics and soft-touch materials all around and that just makes the interior feel and look plusher. However, the cabin design isn’t the most appealing. There are buttons, knobs, and switches all over the place and some people may find it a tad bit cluttered.

2014 Honda Civic Front Seats

What impressed us most was the space that the Civic has got on offer. There’s a good amount of head, shoulder, and legroom on both the rows and most adults will comfortably fit in. 3 adults at the back won’t be all that comfortable and the rear seat is best suited for 3 kids/teenagers and 2 adults. The seats are also quite comfortable and offer good support. The Civic might be an entry-level sedan but the practicality and comfort on offer are on par with mid-level offerings.

The Toyota Corolla is the most spacious sedan in the competition and offers better space than all the others. The Corolla does offer more room at the back but that compromises the front row space. In terms of quality of materials and fit and finish, we found the Civic to be better than the rest. The Civic’s cabin design is the only element that didn’t impress us and we think Hyundai has done a better job in this area with the Elantra.

2014 Honda Civic Infotainment

The 2014 Civic comes equipped with a 160-watt, 4-speaker audio system as standard. The Civic’s sound system is one of the best in the segment and delivers great audio quality. The base trim gets a basic infotainment system that is a bit tedious to use.

However, with higher trims, Honda offers a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment display which is quite slick and easy to use. Higher trims also get an enhanced 6-speaker audio system.

Key infotainment features

  • 160-watt, 4-speaker audio system
  • Bluetooth smartphone integration
  • AM/FM radio
  • CD player
  • Speed-sensitive audio control
  • Steering-wheel-mounted audio controls
  • 7-inch touchscreen infotainment display (With select trims only)

2014 Honda Civic Cargo Capacity

The 2014 Honda Civic offers up to about 12.5 cubic feet of cargo volume. The trunk has a wide opening along with a low loading lip that makes loading and unloading easier.

The rear seats are fixed for the lower trims but you do get 60/40 split-folding rear seats with higher trims.

The Hyundai Elantra offers the highest amount of luggage space in the segment. At 14.8 cubic feet, the Elantra can hold a little more luggage than the other sedans in the competition. The Mazda 3 on the other hand has the lowest cargo space in the competition at 12.4 cubic feet.

Additional Interior Storage Spaces

There are a few storage spaces on the inside. At the front, there’s a large glovebox, the center console has two cupholders, and the front center armrest has a deep storage cubby below it. At the back, the center seat folds down as an armrest that has two cupholders for the rear passengers. All four doors have fairly large pockets that can hold water bottles, umbrellas, magazines, and a few other items.

2014 Honda Civic Creature Comforts

The Civic’s base trim doesn’t get all that many creature features. You are offered manually adjustable front seats, fabric upholstery, and manual air-conditioning. The higher trims of the Civic come equipped with features like heated front seats, 8-way power-adjustable driver’s seat, leather seats and steering wheel, and automatic climate control.

Verdict

The 2014 Honda Civic has a pretty decent interior. It feels plush, offers good space, comes with several features, and pretty much ticks all the boxes for what you would expect from an entry-level sedan. Yes, there are a few downsides like the cluttered interior design and low cargo space but we liked the overall appeal of the Civic’s cabin as it feels more upscale than its rivals. We also liked the Civic’s infotainment and audio system. So, if cargo space and design don’t matter to you all that much, then you should go for the Civic. However, if you need that extra bit of passenger and luggage space, then perhaps you should opt for the likes of the Hyundai Elantra or the Toyota Corolla.
