The Honda Civic Hatchback is a great choice if you want a fun-to-drive hatchback. The Civic Hatchback offers more powerful engine options if you exclude the Type-R variant of the Honda Civic. The performance does not come with any compromise on reliability as Honda Civic is one of the most reliable cars globally. The fuel economy figures are also exceptional considering the kind of performance on offer. The 2019 Honda Civic Hatchback competes against the likes of the Toyota Corolla Hatchback, Chevrolet Cruze Hatchback, and the Mazda 3 Sport Hatchback.

We recommend

The Honda Civic Hatchback gets a standard engine and the only difference in the powertrain option includes the transmission. We recommend going for the Sport trim level in the manual transmission option as it comes pretty well equipped for the price. The manual transmission gives you better control and feels more fun to drive. You can look for the higher trim levels if you want the upgraded features but for most users, the Sport trim is the best trim level in the lineup.

2019 Honda Civic Hatchback Engine and Performance

8.8/10

The 2019 Honda Civic Hatchback comes with a standard 1.5-liter turbocharged Inline-4 engine. The engine is more potent compared to the 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine on the sedan or coupe body styles. The performance from the 1.5L turbo engine is considerably better than the 2.0L engine in the real-world scenario too and you feel the punch in your daily drives. The 1.5L turbo engine produces 180 horsepower and a peak torque of 174 lb-ft. The engine comes mated to either a 6-speed manual transmission or a continuously variable transmission (CVT). The car comes only in an FWD drivetrain option.

The Honda Civic Hatchback will not disappoint you in terms of performance at all. The instant power delivery will always keep you entertained behind the wheels of the car. The manual transmission offers great feedback and should be your first preference if you want driving fun. However, the CVT transmission will not disappoint the enthusiasts at all as Honda makes some of the best CVT transmissions in the industry. It does not feel sluggish at all and you can go with it if you are not comfortable driving a manual car. The Civic Hatchback takes 8.2 seconds to reach from 0 to 60 mph while the quarter-mile run takes 14.9 seconds. The acceleration figures with the CVT transmission are quite impressive for the segment.

The Honda Civic Hatchback has the most powerful engine in the competition churning out an impressive 180 horsepower. The Chevrolet Cruze Hatchback has the least powerful engine in the segment. But on the contrary, it also happens to be the fastest car in the segment in the 0 to 60 mph sprint. The Honda Civic Hatchback on the other hand is the slowest of the lot. However, the difference is not that much and it is one of the better cars to drive in terms of the overall performance of the car.

How well does the 2019 Honda Civic Hatchback handle?

The handling of the 2019 Honda Civic Hatchback is one of the primary reasons why one would consider buying this car. It can not qualify as a hot-hatch if it fails in the handling department. Honda being an experienced automaker has taken care of that aspect very well. The handling of the Honda Civic Hatchback will not disappoint you in any means. Instead, it will give a smile on your face whenever you take the car out for a spin.

The Honda Civic Hatchback is a compact car and the compact dimensions help the handling of the car for sure. The car feels easy to turn around the corners and maneuver inside the city. The steering wheel is responsive and precise. It gives good feedback to the driver. The suspension is also well-tuned and it feels stable even at higher speeds. The best thing about the Honda Civic Hatchback is that all these capabilities come without making any sacrifice to the ride quality. The ride feels smooth and comfortable and it handles the road imperfections pretty well.

How good is the braking performance of the 2019 Honda Civic Hatchback?

The braking performance is one of the key aspects when it comes to a fun-to-drive car. The Honda Civic Hatchback has not missed the braking aspect of their car. Honda has provided 11.1-inch brake rotors at the front and 10.2-inch brake rotors at the back. The Civic Hatchback is one of the lighter cars in the segment which helps the braking of the car. The Toyota Corolla Hatchback signs against its rivals when it comes to the braking performance of the car. Although it is among the heaviest cars in its segment and the size of the brake rotors are also not as big as other rivals, the Civic Hatchback manages to stop the car in just 110 feet from 60 miles per hour to a complete stop. The Mazda 3 Sport Hatchback on the other hand takes the longest distance to stop from the same speed.

2019 Honda Civic Hatchback Fuel Economy

9.9/10

The experience of Honda in the automotive industry is again evident in achieving a perfect combination between performance and fuel economy. The 1.5L turbocharged four-cylinder engine that powers the Honda Civic Hatchback is not only one of the better cars for performance but is also one of the most fuel-efficient cars in the segment. The Civic Hatchback returns an impressive fuel economy of 31 mpg in the city, 42 mpg on the highway, and 36 mpg of combined fuel economy. The figures are quite impressive for a car that performs so well. The Honda Civic Hatchback can go a maximum of 517 miles on a full tank which is an excellent range for the segment.

The Honda Civic Hatchback offers the best fuel economy in the competition. It beats all its rivals in the fuel economy department and becomes one of the most economical options if you want a hatchback that offers such excellent performance. The Toyota Corolla Hatchback offers a slightly better highway range with the help of a marginally bigger fuel tank. Still, it is hard to beat the Honda Civic Hatchback in the fuel economy department.

2019 Honda Civic Hatchback Interior

8.4/10

The interior of the Honda Civic Hatchback will impress most buyers considering the segment it falls in. The Civic Hatchback offers a practical cabin and the quality is also on par with the rivals. The quality of the cabin is not the best in the class but it does not feel cheap at all. The space inside the cabin is on premium and it is not of the comfortable cars for carrying four passengers inside the cabin.

The dashboard and the doors get soft-touch materials and feel good to touch. The dashboard and the other inserts in the front row make the overall look of the cabin sportier which compliments the performance of the car. The driving position is also on the sportier side and the steering wheels feel nice to hold. The controls for the cabin are easy to use. The space in the rear row is also among the best in the class.

2019 Honda Civic Hatchback Exterior

8.6/10

The exterior styling of the 2019 Honda Civic Hatchback has received a mixed response from the public. The Civic Hatchback gets one of the most aggressive stylings at the exterior compared to any of the other body styles of the car. The front of the car looks sporty and attractive. The LED headlights with daytime running lights and turn signals will impress the buyers. As you move down, the vents at the bottom near the foglights house the horns inside them. There is a lip spoiler below that goes well with the overall design language.

The hood at the front gets sharp body lines at both sides of the bonnet. The alloy wheels at the side are also designed pretty well. The Honda Civic also features a sunroof on the higher trim levels. The rear end gets a low rear spoiler that looks good. The signature tail lights at the rear make it easy to recognize it as a Civic from the rear. 2019 Honda Civic Hatchback Competition

7.0/10

Honda Civic Hatchback vs. Toyota Corolla Hatchback

The Toyota Corolla Hatchback offers an excellent package for the segment. It is one of the closest rivals to the Civic Hatchback but the performance of the Corolla Hatchback is not as aggressive as the Civic Hatchback. The driving dynamics of the Honda Civic are also better. The Civic Hatchback returns better fuel economy figures and also offers better ride quality and space inside the cabin. The Honda Civic Hatchback is a better choice between the two for most people.

Honda Civic Hatchback vs. Chevrolet Cruze Hatchback

The Chevy Cruze Hatchback gets the least powerful engine in the segment but the performance is not an issue at all. The outright acceleration is impressive from the small turbocharged engine. The Cruze also comes at a more affordable price point. But the Civic Hatchback is a better overall car in terms of driving pleasure and practicality.

Honda Civic Hatchback vs. Mazda 3 Sport Hatchback

The performance of the Mazda 3 Sport Hatchback is somewhat similar to the Honda Civic Hatchback. The Mazda 3 gets a bigger engine with slightly less power output. The driving dynamics of the Mazda 3 Sport Hatchback is also on par with the Civic Hatchback. However, the Civic Hatchback makes more sense as it offers better space in the cabin, a more fuel-efficient powertrain, and better practicality.
