Honda Civic came to be 50 years ago, and in its five-decade career, it went on to become one of the most popular name plates across the globe. For 2022 MY, Civic has finally stepped into its 50th year of production and Honda has finally launched the 11th generation of the legendary nameplate.

It has been redesigned from the ground up, and the interior feels more premium. The mechanicals have improved as well. Handling has significantly improved due to the revised steering column and larger wheelbase. With a starting price tag of $22,550, the new 2022 Civic is available in four trims. It competes with the likes of Hyundai Elantra, Toyota Corolla, and Volkswagen Jetta.

2022 Honda Civic Engine

While the 11th generation Civic is redesigned from the ground up, the powertrain remains the same as the previous model year. Similar to the previous MY, the 2022 Civic features a duo of engine options. Both of them are mated to a CVT gearbox, and power is sent to the front wheels as standard. However, Honda claims that they have made some changes to the engine to make it more fuel-efficient and punchy. As standard, it comes equipped with a 2L naturally aspirated inline-4 engine capable of churning out 158 horsepower and 138 lb-ft of torque. The more expensive EX and Touring models get a 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine. It now produces 6 hp and 15 lb-ft more than the previous MY taking the tally to 180 horsepower at 6000 rpm and 177 lb-ft of maximum torque at only 1700 rpm.

Honda says they have mated the engine with a new turbocharger, which not only provides more power but promises a better fuel economy. The turbo pipes have been redesigned and pressure drop has been reduced with a new exhaust port. While we expected the sedan variant to feature a manual gearbox as standard, the CVT is the only available transmission unit. Power delivery is linear and CVT actually improves fuel economy.

Honda Civic is the most expensive in the lot and it comes with a long list of features to justify its price tag. However, it has a bad price-to-power ratio. If we had to pick one car with great features and a great price-to-power ratio, the new Volkswagen Jetta is a great fit. It is the second cheapest in the lot and offers decent power. It comes with a turbo mill as standard at a much lower price than the rest. However, cars like the Corolla and the Civic offer better reliability in the long run.

2022 Honda Civic Acceleration

With the 2L naturally aspirated engine under the hood, the 2022 Civic can hit 0-60 MPH in 8.8 seconds and can cover a quarter-mile in 16.9 seconds. The EX and Touring variants with the turbo kit can hit 0-60 mph in 7.2 seconds and cross the quarter-mile in 15.6 seconds. Top speed is limited to 130MPH.

Volkswagen Jetta has the most powerful base engine and comes with manual gearbox as standard. And it is the fastest in the lot without doubt. Hyundai Elantra is the lightest in the segment and, with decent power, it comes second in the acceleration test. The Civic and the Corolla take their own sweet time in the acceleration tests.

2022 Honda Civic Brake Performance

2022 Honda Civic comes equipped with 11.1-inch front ventilated disc brakes and 10.2-inch solid rear disc brakes as standard. The brakes have decent thermal tolerance and are long-lasting. We didn’t notice any brake fade even after prolonged usage. Also, the brakes have a good bite and the pedal feels firm. In the braking tests, the Civic Touring model came to a stop from 60 mph at 122 feet.

Hyundai Elantra is equipped with a good set of brakes and it is the lightest in the lot. Civic is only slightly heavier than the former and has larger front disc brakes, but it fails to defeat the Elantra in terms of brake performance. Corolla and the Jetta take their own time to come to a stop when the brakes are slammed at 60MPH.

2022 Honda Civic Handling

Honda has put more emphasis on the way the 2022 Civic drives and handles. And this year, it has made important changes to make the Civic the best in the segment when it comes to handling characteristics. 2022 Honda Civic comes with a new chassis and suspension unit. Body roll is minimal and the vehicle stays planted on the road. However, the ride quality is firm but not too harsh. The steering column has been retuned as well. It feels light, smooth and communicates better with the driver.

Moreover, the wheelbase has increased by 1.4 inches. The bigger wheelbase provides better stability and better ride comfort. The new Civic has a steering radius of 36.1 feet, making it easier to operate in traffic and inside the city.

2022 Honda Civic MPG Figures

Honda has tweaked the base engine unit on the 2022 Civic to get more mileage. It now returns 31 MPG in the city and 40 MPG on the highway; 1-2 MPG more than its previous MY. Opting for the turbo variant slightly improves the fuel economy as well. As standard, you get a 12.4-gallon fuel tank, which puts the Civic’s highway driving range between 471-496 miles.

Jetta is undoubtedly the most powerful in the segment but not the most efficient in the lot. Hyundai Elantra again emerges as the most practical in the segment with better mileage and thanks to a large 14-gallon fuel tank, it has the best driving range in the competition. Civic, on the other hand, provides decent mileage but its small fuel tank affects its driving range by a significant margin.

Verdict

2022 Civic certainly isn’t the fastest or the most fuel-efficient in the segment. However, Honda has put more effort into making the Civic upscale and stylish. The redesign has made it look sleek and stylish. However, it provides decent power and mileage as well. But the area where Honda shines is reliability. While its rivals are cheaper, the Civic has the best reliability and offers excellent after-sales support.
