2018 Honda Clarity Fuel Cell Sedan Complete In-depth Review & Buying Guide

Demonstrating the first ever Hydrogen-powered sedan back in 2008, the Honda Clarity Fuel Cell has deemed it reality now that it storms the streets, emitting absolutely zero emissions in conjunction with a roomy and plentiful plush materials. Debuted in 2017, the Clarity Fuel Cell drives with convenience where you don 't need to charge with a physical output; rather all you need is to replace the cells, and you 're good to go. Supremely efficient, it rides comfortably and smoothly, but let us tell you, its aesthetic design is something that one gets used to, over a along period of time of course.

Expert Review

CARHP Editorial June 1, 2019

The sedan is offered on-lease at $369 and comes in a single trim. Powering the front wheels of the sedan is an electric motor that is charged via hydrogen fuel cells and produces 174 horsepower and 221 pound-feet of torque. Amongst its competition, the 2018 Honda Clarity FCV goes against the Toyota Mirai, a similarly designed sedan with Fuel Cell. These two sedans are also two of the only hydrogen-powered sedans currently road-produced. Now on to the review, let’s find out where the Honda Clarity places itself.

The sedan also houses seating for 5 passengers, an uncommon practice amongst hybrid cars.

We recommend

The Honda Clarity comes in a single trim with optional features limited only to accessories. While the sedan offers plenty of standard features, we recommend purchasing the Rear Parking Sensor.

2018 Honda Clarity Fuel Cell Sedan Engine

The Clarity isn't an exciting car to drive, but it is accessible and easy to deal with in everyday driving. Acceleration and handling are adequate but nothing more -edmunds

The Honda Clarity Fuel Cell comes with a hydrogen-run powertrain that charges the electric motors, which in turn drives the motor, and is mated to a single speed automatic transmission that churns out a respectable 174 horses and 221 pound-feet of torque.

This front wheel driven sedan when rolling, emits a noisy engine. For all it's worth, do not expect any greatness out of this powertrain; there is sufficient power for normal and everyday driving abstaining propulsion of athleticism or anything even remotely close to enthusiasm. The Clarity is just the right sedan to take you to the nearest grocery while maintaining the idea of keeping the Earth Green, with absolutely no emission.

Its competitors come in a mixed variants; the Prius is a hybrid that produces 121 horses and 105 pulling forces while the Toyota mirai is an electric sedan with almost similar output as the Clarity.

Thrusting the hybrid sedan is the electric motor that generates enough power to time 0-60 mph in 8.1s and the quarter mile in 16.7s. These timings are anything but over-the-top, however it is decently quick. Along its rivals, the Mirai is the only one to compete close enough, notwithstanding its 0-60 timing that is a few tenths slower than the Clarity. It also gets both the tests done within the time frame of the Honda, whereas the Toyota Prius is the slowest but that is also thanks to its lowest powered powertrain in the list.

Handling and Braking

The fuel cell sedan, Honda Clarity rides with calm and composure with a quite insulated sound, despite its engine resounding a constant but undisturbing tune. Its unenthusiastic control is further elaborated in its handling and steering feedback; there is a resemblance of driving dynamics that is parallel to even some of the luxurious sedans \u2013 a compliment of this higher caliber is something that is in fact seen in the Clarity.

Swerving around corners and chicanes is decently maneuvered, nonetheless the sedan is anything but a machine you'd take over the canyons. As for its braking, the pedals feel disconnected and unnatural; it takes a mediocre 129 feet to stop from 60-0 mph.

2018 Honda Clarity Fuel Cell Sedan Fuel Economy

For what the sedan serves its purpose is efficiency and its powertrain bests exactly this aspect. With 69 mpg in the city, 67 mpg on the highway, and a combined output of 68 mpg, the Honda Clarity truly yields incredible fuel economy. Its closest rival, the Toyota Mirari, takes similar output but is an overall second to the Honda. The hybrid Prius One is the lowest but in itself, is actually a great performer.

2018 Honda Clarity Fuel Cell Sedan Interior

The 2018 Honda Clarity lineup is spacious, comfortable, and quiet, though the low-volume Electric and Fuel Cell versions are strictly four-seaters. -thecarconnection

Inside the Honda Clarity is a handsome cabin with plush materials around the interior. There is seating capacity for 5, however 4 can seat with extreme plush and comfort. Leather stitched upholstery and wrapped steering wheel feel premium along with adjustable driver and passenger seat in the front. The Clarity trades unappealing exterior with a roomy and lavish interior, that is clearly evidenced upon first entry. Its cabin does not resonate any sound from the outside world, giving testament to the noise insulation. Due to the tapering roofline however, the rear seats hinder absolute comfort in terms of headroom for especially taller passengers of 6-feet.

Interior Features

The Clarity comes with some of the following interior features -

  • Leather upholstery and steering wheel
  • Auto dimming rearview mirror
  • 4-way power adjustable front passenger seat
  • Driver's seat with 8-way power adjust and 2-position memory
  • Push Button Start
  • Tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel adjust

Infotainment System

The infotainment system houses an 8 touchscreen that controls media and entertainment in the Clarity's interior. Its system's layout and interface does not feel as smooth and refined as its competitors although it does come with a horde of features. Some of the system's features are -

  • Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
  • 2 USB ports
  • HD Radio
  • 8 touchscreen system
  • Eight-speaker sound system

Cargo volume

Housing the large hydrogen cells in the trunk, the Clarity comes with a paltry 11.8 cubic feet of space that is bettered by the similarly powered Toyota Mirai at 12.8 cubic feet. However, under the Prius One's boot, the Hybrid machine offers more storage at 24.6 cubic feet but that is also due to the space it does not hold for its batteries or any sort of system.

2018 Honda Clarity Fuel Cell Sedan Exterior

The 2018 Honda Clarity sedan has awkward proportions, especially at the rear, due to its specialized powertrains, but the interior is handsome. -thecarconnection

The above quote basically sums up the exterior of the Honda Clarity; it embodies an awkward framework together with shortened C-Pillar clamped with the back. Standing at a height of 58.2 with a width measuring 73.9, and around 192.7 in length, the Clarity is a tall and long sedan with a wide design. The bulk is evidently apparent at first sight, adding to the size an uninteresting \tslant. Its roofline slopes with a tapering flow that aids in aerodynamics, jutting outward the rear bonnet. Protruding slightly from the trunklid is a spoiler which also houses the horizontally-placed brake light.

Honda Clarity's contemporary and modern design just does not quite possess breathtaking or futuristic, to say the least. In the front fascia is incorporated the chrome-accented wing-design line atop which rests a large Honda insignia. Slitted between these wings on either sides are LED headlights. L-shaped lights run below the headlights all the way to the front bumper.

From the side profile, Honda has extended the fender-cover that is shaped more or less resembling sharp edges, and this decision does not necessarily translate well to likability whereas its rear seems simple with LED taillights that more stylish than the entire exterior aesthetic.

Exterior Features

Some of the exterior features include -

  • LED Taillights
  • Body Colored Deck lid Spoiler
  • Smart Entry with Walk Away Auto Lock
  • Body Colored Power Side Mirrors
  • Fin Type Roof Mounted Antenna
  • LED Turn Indicator

2018 Honda Clarity Fuel Cell Sedan Safety

The 2018 Honda Clarity’s low-emitting sedan is yet to be rated by the NHTSA and the IIHS. However, the sedan offers a horde of safety features that prevents crashes or collisions. Some of them are -

  • Acoustic Vehicle Alerting System (AVAS)
  • Vehicle Stability Assist™ (VSA) with Traction Control
  • Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS)
  • Multi-Angle Rearview Camera with Dynamic Guidelines
  • Electronic Brake Distribution (EBD)
  • Forward Collision Warning (FCW)*(Honda Sensing® feature)
  • Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS)
  • Collision Mitigation Braking System™ (CMBS™)* (Honda Sensing® feature)
  • Lane Departure Warning (LDW)* (Honda Sensing® feature)
  • SmartVent® Front Side Airbags
  • Side Curtain Airbags with Rollover Sensor

2018 Honda Clarity Fuel Cell Sedan Competition

Honda Clarity Fuel Cell vs Toyota Mirai

Incredibly Green, the two hydrogen-run Honda Clarity and Toyota Mirai come with plenty of similarities as well as performance. While exterior design differs, it all depends on taste and subjectivity. There is refinement of powertrain, lush materials and seating arrangement, and a frugal performance.

Such is the opinion about both these sedans that we believe it comes down to how good you think either look and accordingly decide your purchase.

2018 Honda Clarity Fuel Cell Sedan Final Verdict

So, the 2018 Honda Clarity Fuel Cell sedan brings forth plenty of reasons why it is a great buy; beginning with the emission, it discharges nothing from its tail pipe, and comes with a decent performance with numerous interior features and a plush cabin. In between the Toyota Mirai and the Clarity, the choice is quite hard however having said that, you can't go wrong with the 2018 Honda Clarity FCV.
