2022 Honda HR-V User Complaints and Problems
In its latest iteration, the Honda HR-V has five complaints to its name. While the number might not seem concerning, the issues of the 2022 MY are a carryover from the previous iterations. Since the subcompact SUV is still a part of its first generation, the problems of the initial model years can continue to be prevalent in the successive models. Listed below are the most common complaints of the current generation and their implications on the ownership experience.
Mechanical Complaints
- Malfunctioning braking system: The problems of the braking system of the Honda HR-V are manifold. The first issue is concerned with the failure of the system, where buyers have reported the ceasing of the functionality, which results in a longer halting distance. In other cases, complainants have also recorded the independent employment of the automatic emergency braking system which eventually can lead to a crash.
- Issues with Transmission system: Like the braking unit, the Honda HR-V transmission problems are also dual in nature. The first issue is concerned with the delay in the shifting process, which causes a strain on the vehicle’s performance. In other cases, buyers have also reported the slipping of the transmission. As a result, the vehicle revs at higher RPMs without a gear shift, which increases the pressure on the powertrain.
- Damaged rear shockers: In the 2016 and 2017 iterations, buyers of the Honda HR-V have reported an erratic noise from the rear end of the vehicle. Upon inspection, it has been noted that a leaking shocker is the cause of concern.
- Unintended Acceleration: In a handful of cases, buyers of the Honda HR-V have also recorded the vehicle to pick up speed without any input from the driver. With the brake pedal depressed, complainants have reported the SUV to accelerate. While most of these issues occur when entering a parking spot, a couple of accidents have been reported due to the recurrence of the problem.
- Vehicle loses power: The final mechanical complaint of the Honda HR-V relates to the SUV losing all its motive power. As a result, the vehicle stalls inadvertently, which can increase the risk of a crash.
Electric System Complaints
- Display screen malfunction: A rampant issue in the 2019 Honda HR-V is concerned with the improper functioning of the instrument cluster panel. Complainants have reported the display screen to go blank and not display any information. As a result, the drivers remain devoid of essential information like fuel efficiency, range, and tire pressure, which can be detrimental for the users.
- Failure of the start/stop button: Across 2016 MY, several buyers of the Honda HR-V have also reported a failure of the start/stop button. Despite pressing the button, the SUV refuses to start up, leaving the passengers stranded. While there has been no recurrence of the issue, the possibility of a relapse of the problem cannot be eliminated.
Exterior Complaints
- Chipping exterior paint: In a relatively lower number of cases in all model years, buyers of the Honda HR-V have also reported the chipping of the exterior paint. While it is most evident on the hood of the SUV, the problem has affected several panels of the vehicle’s body.
Structural Complaints
- Explosion of the sunroof: In a handful of cases, complainants have reported the sunroof to explode without any incidence or impact. The glass panel of the sunroof shatters completely and makes a loud explosion sound. While no injuries have been reported so far, the glass fragments can enter the cabin hurting the passengers inside.
Safety Complaints
- Improper functioning of the airbags: Yet another issue with the Honda HR-V is concerned with the substandard performance of its airbag system. Buyers have reported the non-deployment of the airbags, which has led to injuries to the occupants in a couple of cases. While the recurrence of the issue has been on a downward trajectory, it is important for Honda to deal with the situation effectively.
The 2022 Honda HR-V problems are largely carried forward from the past iterations. Yet, amidst all of its issues and underwhelming user experiences, the HR-V continues to be a top-notch performer. Compared to the rivals from Hyundai and Kia, the HR-V has a lower or similar number of complaints. But it is the Subaru Crosstrek that remains unscathed in its latest iteration, making it one of the better options in the market.

2022 Honda HR-V Recalls
The Honda HR-V has had a lengthy list of complaints. However, its recall section is quite the opposite. In its six years in the market, the Japanese subcompact SUV has been called back only seven times, which is relatively lesser than all of its competitors. Yet, Honda has been efficient in dealing with all the recurrent issues. Its proactive nature has helped combat the most common issues timely, and consequently, both the number of complaints and recalls have become rather non-existent in the past couple of years. Listed below are all the recalls started by the brand on the HR-V SUV.

The common problems with Honda HR-V are rather easily dealt with by the brand through recalls. In the past three years, including 2022 MY, Honda’s SUV has not been recalled once. However, in all other years where a recall has happened, the Japanese brand has arranged for a free inspection and replacement/repair of the affected components. Unlike its competitors, the HR-V has not been called back excessively. But with the latest iterations, even the 2022 Hyundai Kona, the 2022 Kia Soul, and the 2022 Subaru Crosstrekhave no recalls as of the date we write this article.

Which Honda HR-V model year should you avoid?
The 2023 Honda HR-V might mark the entry of an all-new generation of the SUV. So, the 2022 iteration might as well be the last year of production for the current generation. While the Honda HR-V has enjoyed a fair share of success since 2016, not all models are equally likable. We recommend buyers stay wary of the 2016 Honda HR-V, which has whopping 140 complaints and 2 recalls to its name. Though the 2017 iteration is also not the best, the 2020 and successive model years make for pristine choices.
Should you buy a used Honda HR-V?
With a shift to the SUV segment, subcompact options have become wildly popular and, in the market, the Honda HR-V has become an instant superstar by nailing the brief of comfort, practicality, and everyday drivability. It looks enticing and is affordably priced. While its complaints might seem overbearing, Honda’s reliability quotient remains undeterred. So, if you plan on buying a new or used HR-V, you would not regret your decision.
