Detailed Review

With the rising popularity of Big SUV’s in the market, Hyundai thought of doing something that would suit this growing demand of the customers. Hence in 2019, Hyundai has launched the All New Santa Fe XL. The XL seems to address the demand of the customers in the sense that it offers a lot more space on the inside than the Standard Santa FE and also houses, a more powerful 3.3L V6 under its hood.

Expert Review

CARHP Editorial April 10, 2019

Like the Santa Fe, the Santa Fe XL also offers a lot of features as Standard on both of its trims namely the SE and the SE Limited. Both are available in FWD and AWD configurations while the prices range from $30,850 to over $41,000, depending on the trim and options chosen. The XL can also accommodate 7 Passengers in it and a bit more equipment for a small bump in pricing over the standard Santa Fe. Rivals for the XL, comes in the form of the Volkswagen Atlas, Honda Pilot, Mazda CX-9, Subaru Ascent, Ford Explorer and Toyota Highlander.

2019 Hyundai Santa Fe XL SUV Engine

The 3.3-liter V6 provides decent acceleration without fuss -edmunds.com

The 2019 Santa FE XL, comes powered by a 3.3L V6 Motor that generates 290Hp and 252 lbs-ft. of Torque. This is coupled to Hyundai’s Gasoline Direct Injection Technology that squeezes out the max performance out of the fuel supplied without compromising on the efficiency.

This Engine is one of the best in class in terms of carrying plenty of people on board or towing. The Engine feels relaxed and un-strained even when fully loaded and doesn’t run out of breathe, when performing an overtaking manoeuver.

The 3.3L V6 has been paired to a 6 Speed Automatic Transmission which also has Shiftronic Function. While this may not be the best in class, the Unit performs decently fine while providing downshifts at the right times and smooth gear changes overall.

Acceleration

The Powerful V6 Motor of the Santa Fe XL, does give it an advantage and respectable timings in a dash from 0-60. With just 7.2seconds to do the 60MPH mark, the 2019 Hyundai Santa Fe XL, despite its XL proportions is one of the fastest cars in the segment. The Quarter Mile figures are also stupendous at 15.8 seconds.

In terms of the competition, the Big Ford Explorer is the slowest in this comparison in both the 0-60MPH dash and the quarter mile dash while the others are nearly equally matched in the timings.

Towing Capacity

SUV’s like the Santa Fe XL, haven’t been exactly designed, keeping towing in mind. However, in terms of the Towing Capacity, the Hyundai Santa Fe XL ranks amongst the Best in Class because of its massive 5,000lbs Max Towing Capacity. While this may not be a Mind Numbing number as compared to the Big SUV’s, the 5,000lbs capacity will be rather sufficient enough to tow small hatchbacks or even Caravans with ease.

All of the Cars in this comparison except the Subaru, come with FWD as Standard while the 4WD/AWD variants costs around $2,500 more. The Subaru Ascent offers standard AWD and this helps it offer great towing capacities, as compared to other SUV’s in the segment.

Ride and Handling

The Hyundai Santa Fe is a big SUV from all angles and one would expect the ride and handling to be Wobbly and uncomfortable. But in reality, it isn’t exactly like that. Yes there is a little body roll when taking the winding road hard or tackling the corner. But it never gets unnerving or makes you lose your confidence. Overtaking won’t be complex as the body is able to negotiate the sudden change in directions in fast moving traffic or on the Motorways.

In terms of the Ride, we think it’s one of the biggest positives of the Santa Fe XL. The Ride Quality is sublime irrespective of the terrain it travels. Potholes and Speed Humps are gobbled up by the Santa Fe’s suspension and going over undulations on the roads will be an easy affair to deal with.

Braking

With big brake Rotors in the Front and the Rear and a low kerb weight, the Hyundai Santa Fe XL, excels in the braking department as well. The Big SUV takes just 116ft to come to a dead stop from 60MPH and which is a commendable feat for an SUV of this size.

2019 Hyundai Santa Fe XL SUV Fuel Economy

The 2019 Hyundai Santa Fe XL offers superb performance but slightly compromises on the MPG Figures on the whole. The MPG figures of the Santa Fe XL ranks among the lowest in the segment but for the kind of performance it offers, the trade-off is significantly lower as compared to the other SUV’s in the segment.

Seating and Comfort

The 3-row seating Hyundai Santa Fe XL seats a maximum of 7 passengers on board with great comfort and space. Quality materials with soft feel furnish the cabin and comfortable seats with good bolstering allows long distance drives. The dash feels great and high-quality in places but some hard plastics have been used in certain places in lieu of cost cutting. Sit in the back or the front, you’d always find space for your head, legs or shoulders. Visibility is fine around and noise is easily cancelled out from the outside world.

2019 Hyundai Santa Fe XL SUV Exterior

The new Santa Fe has more presence on the road thanks to a bigger, more aggressive grille, and its interior is starting to pair Hyundai’s practical interiors with a newfound sense of style –TheCarConnection.com

Design and Dimensions

The 2019 Santa Fe XL's outside is modest, yet snazzy. The Signature Grill and the aggressive design is about as radical as this SUV can be. From the Sides, one can easily mistake the Santa Fe for a Certain German SUV because of its oversized Tail Pipes and 3 Quarter portion.

In terms of the dimensions, the XL is not a lot longer, wider and taller than the other SUV’s in the segment. This yields it advantage in terms moving through tight spaces or parking in cramped areas.

2019 Hyundai Santa Fe XL SUV Competition

Hyundai Santa Fe vs Honda Pilot

The Honda CR-V is a laudable performer while delivering great fuel efficiency. It also comes with a host of safety features next to an abundant list of features and technology. Practicality is at its highest here. On the other hand, the Hyundai Santa Fe closely matches the Pilot but still falls short of its driving dynamics. We’d pick the Honda for its reliability and performance.

Hyundai Santa Fe vs Mazda CX-9

Similar in character, the Mazda CX-9 is the class leader but the Hyundai Santa Fe does come up with magic up its sleeve. Both these SUV’s boast commendable interior equipment, plethora of features and safety tech and are similarly reasonably priced. However the CX-5 is the segment leader for a reason; it has great driving dynamics with great sporty experience and performance. We’d pick the CX-9 albeit it loses a few space in the trunk while gaining a bit in its miles per gallon.

2019 Hyundai Santa Fe XL SUV Final Verdict

The Hyundai Santa Fe XL, ushers a new air of freshness in the big SUV Space. With a decently powerful V6 with good MPG figures, the Santa Fe is one of the most powerful in its class. What supports the Hyundai’s cause is its feature laden interiors that is among the best in class. So if you don’t want to spend a fortune on buying a big SUV for yourself while getting a Powerful Motor, Spacious and Feature loaded Interiors and good looks, the 2019 Hyundai Santa Fe XL fits the bill well.
