Expert Review, Pricing Analysis and Buying Guide

Overall Rating

Though the Hyundai Sonata hybrid doesn’t get many updates this year, it gets new features added to its interior list thus offering more comfort with this midsize sedan. It begins at an MSRP of $27,750 and comes pretty much loaded right from the base trim onwards. In this segment 2022, Sonata hybrid competes only with its age-old rivals that include the Honda Accord Hybrid, and Toyota Camry Hybrid

Which Trim should you buy?

Among the three the SEL hybrid is the one we would recommend. The SEL trim is priced at $29,900 and offers features like an 8-way power driver seat with power lumbar and a Bose premium audio system for $2000 extra. The Limited trim offers is an impressive deal too but seeing a steep rise in prices for a few features offered doesn’t convince us.

2022 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid Release Date

The Hyundai Sonata is all set to be unveiled in the coming weeks by the end of the third quarter and expect the deliveries to begin in the fourth quarter.

2022 Hyundai Sonata hybrid Sedan Engine and Performance

The 2022 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid is powered by a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine supported by a 39 kW electric motor producing a total output of 192 horsepower and 139 lb-feet of net torque. The electric motor is connected to a six-speed torque converter Shiftronic automatic gearbox along with a forward-wheel-drive system and gets its power from a 270-V Lithium-ion polymer battery setup.

The optional CVT it gets is praised for its smooth shifts and along with this the powertrain gracefully switches between the gas power and electric motors. It offers a swift and composed ride in city traffic. However, the engine can feel a bit underperforming while accelerating at highway speeds. The Sonata hybrid takes almost 7.6 seconds to cover the 0-60 mph run and a lethargic 16.2 seconds on the quarter-mile drag strip.

The custom drive modes mode in this sedan allows the user to mix and match and save favorite individual settings along with available Eco, Smart, and Sport modes. The electric motor and battery weight resides low in the chassis and is already optimized for a reduced center of gravity. This allows the Sonata Hybrid to give out an athletic feel while on corners. The steering might feel a bit heavy but gives a satisfactory response.

The engine offered in all the rivals is somewhat similar but the Sonata hybrid receives an underpowered electric motor and still manages to be the best the segment has to offer. Among the rivals, the Accord provides the maximum power output along with the Camry hybrid. The Honda Accord and Camry hybrid are the only two standing hybrid rivals in the segment and they both sport a standard CVT transmission.

2022 Hyundai Sonata hybrid Sedan Fuel Economy

The 2022 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid returns up to 50 MPGe in the city, 54 MPGe on the highway, and 47 MPGe combined as per the EPA. It is a self-charging hybrid car that gets charged by the energy captured during braking or slowing down of the vehicle and then stores the energy in a battery. It features a 13.2-gallon fuel tank, which ranks just average among its rivals in terms of capacity but the driving range is phenomenal for the segment.

In this segment, the Toyota Camry Hybrid offers the best EPA-rated fuel economy figures in the city and even though it gets a smaller tank it still manages to cover 673 miles in the city. The driving range offered by the Accord is the lowest as it has the highest fuel consumption amongst the cars in this comparison, while the Sonata Hybrid is the clear segment leader in terms of driving range.

2022 Hyundai Sonata hybrid Sedan Interior

The 2022 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid offers to seat a total of 5 passengers comfortably. The spacious front seat proves to be decent for long drives. At the rear row, it offers plenty of headroom for any tall passenger boarding the vehicle. The brand hasn’t left any stone unturned to provide an impressive cabin. Even in the base trim, the interior offered is of top-notch automatic quality and the Limited trim features an interior that makes it look like some high-end luxury vehicle.

The 2022 Sonata hybrid is covered in soft plastic and leather and is offered in either gray or black interior layout. Although the dark colors don't make the cabin feel particularly spacious, there is plenty of space for the front row occupant, but the rear seat passengers will have to make a compromise. The vehicle has its batteries under the rear seats, unlike other hybrid vehicles which store their batteries in the trunk thus allowing a total cargo space of 16 cubic feet.

As to the rivals, the Toyota Camry gets the most spacious cabin, while the Honda Accord hybrid has the most balanced front rear-seat space. Talking about cargo capacity, the Honda Accord hybrid offers the most spacious cargo with Camry offering a marginally smaller boot. Standout interior features in the 2022 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid include:

The 2022 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid boasts an aggressive and appealing design on the exterior; however, it looks the same as the non-hybrid ones. In the front, it sports a more of a futuristic design with that stunning hexagonal grille and the chrome strips on the headlights giving it an aggressive character and a bold road presence all along. The 17-inch machined aluminum-alloy wheels complement the sleek body lines, while at the rear, it gets finned LED taillights along with a shark fin antenna and the spoiler integrated into the boot lid.

2022 Hyundai Sonata hybrid Sedan Competition

2022 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid vs 2021 Honda Accord Hybrid

The Honda Accord Hybrid has a luxurious and quiet cabin experience to offer. Priced significantly lower, it offers similar power output to the Sonata. In terms of interior, the Accord doesn’t offer a spacious cabin experience as the Sonata but gets a larger cargo capacity in comparison. Considering power output and its acceleration the Accord might be a better pick but if a buyer prefers a safe and luxurious cabin then the Sonata is good to go.

2022 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid vs 2022 Toyota Camry Hybrid

The Toyota Camry Hybrid is heavy compared to the Sonata thus drags one or two feet extra before coming to a stop. It falls short in terms of power output than the Sonata but offers far better economy specs. Even though it gets a smaller fuel tank it still tops in terms of the overall range. In terms of external dimensions it’s somewhat similar to Sonata but still offers a less spacious cabin.

2022 Toyota Camry Hybrid

2022 Hyundai Sonata hybrid Sedan Final Verdict

The new Hyundai Sonata Hybrid is an impressive sedan with best in class performance specs and a luxurious cabin experience. It offers a long list of standard safety features along with additional packages making it a preferred vehicle. Most of the rivals of Sonata Hybrid lacks in terms of power output, in-cabin space.
